Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   On agence de manière telle, ledit tracteur, qu'il comporte, d'une part', un train de roues seulement motrices et, d'autre part, un second train, à la fois moteur et di- recteur tel qu'il permette, si déqiré, de faire effectuer au véhicule des virages autour d'axes rencontrant la projec-   tion horizontale du tracteur ; cepourquoi, par exemple,   on établit de manière   telle,.ledit   tracteur, qu'il comporte: un   châ@@@ a   propre à supporter de manière appropriée un moteur ainsi que ses organes annexes de fonctionnement et de commande ; un train de deux roues coaxialesb;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   Concernant le châssis a du tracteur, on le consti- tue par un assemblage comprenant, entre les deux roues   coaxiales b   un bâti supportant le moteur, ses organes annexes de fonctionnement et de com- mande, les axes des roues ainsi que les organes de liaison desdits axes au moteur, lesdits organes comprenant, bien en- tendu, une botte de vitesses, et un bras d fixé latéralement au susdit bâti et pro- pre à supporter à son extrémitéle pivot désaxé de la roue c;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 un second pignon de chaine k, propre à être relié avec le ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

     12), et on inverse le sens de la. liai.son du moteur à la roue avant au moyen du changement, de marche y relatif.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

  "Improvements made to motor vehicles, in particular agricultural tractors".

   The cut invention relating to motor vehicles; and it relates more particularly, because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among said vehicles, agricultural tractors with two sets of wheels.

   Its aim is, above all, to make the evolutions of the aforesaid vehicles more flexible than they were until now.

   It consists, mainly, in arranging in such a way, the vehicles of the type in question, that one of their wheelsets is at the same time motor and orientable in such a way that it allows, if desired, to describe to the vehicle of turns around axes meeting the horizontal projection of the vehicle.

   It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which can be used

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 preferably at the same time and which it will be. Spoken more explicitly below, in particular in a second arrangement, which relates exclusively to vehicles comprising at least one drive wheel that can be oriented around an axis meeting the ground outside the contact surface of the vehicle. wheel with the aol, consisting, said arrangement, in arranging the steering organs in such a way that, when desired, these organs can be rendered inoperative, the orientation of the wheel being made free and then being able to be done under the influence of its tendency to rotate by engine power.

   It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certsinsmodes de réallsation, said provisions; and it also relates more particularly, and this as new industrial products, to vehicles of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, as well as the special elements specific to their establishment.

   And it can, in any case, be clearly understood with the aid of the following description oomplement, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given as an indication.

   Figs. 1 and 2 of these drawings show, respectively in plan and in elevation, a three-wheeled, all-drive tractor constructed in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.

   Fig. 3 shows, on a larger scale, the drive and orientation mechanism of the. steering wheel of the aforesaid tractor.

   Figs. 4 and 5 show, similarly to FIGS.

  1 and 2, a tractor also with three wheels, all drive, established in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.

   Figs. 6 and 7 show, ± larger scale, respectively in elevation and in axial section. the mechanic

 me of training. and orientation of the steering wheel of the aforesaid tractor.

   Fig. 8 shows a detail of the aforesaid mechanism.

   Figs. 9 to 12, finally, schematically show the tractor represented by FIGS. 4 and 5 in four different phases of a U-turn maneuver.

   According to the invention, and more particularly according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, assuming that one wishes To establish, for example, a full-grip agricultural tractor, the procedure is as follows, or the like.

   Said tractor is arranged in such a way that it comprises, on the one hand, a train of only driving wheels and, on the other hand, a second train, both motor and steering such as to allow , if required, to make the vehicle make turns around axes meeting the horizontal projection of the tractor; This is why, for example, it is established in such a way, .said tractor, that it comprises: a châ @@@ a suitable for adequately supporting an engine as well as its ancillary operating and control members; a train of two coaxial wheelsb;

   at least one steered wheel c, one wheel e either axially (fig. @@@) and with an off-axis pivot, or off-axis (fig. @@@) and then, advantageously with axial pivot, orientable by pivoting about d 'a vertical pivot and capable of being moved by appropriate steering organs, on either side of its position corresponding to walking in a straight line, this with an amplitude - at least as regards of its movements in one direction - allowing, depending on the intended use of the tractor, or to bring the center of turn of the tractor

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in the vertical plane of the axis of the wheels b in positions for which the said center is between the two aforesaid wheels b,

   or else to have the wheel describe at least a full half-turn ± around its pivot, more particularly if the. the front wheel is off-axis with respect to the tractor, and, finally, the means. making it possible to connect in such a way, with the desired gear ratio the engine to the aforesaid wheels b and c, this} either simultaneously to the two sets of wheels, or, if desired, to the steering gear only, that the direction of reues rotation can be set at will independently for the two trains.

   We. advantageously realizes the aforesaid arrangements in one of the following two ways, among others.

   According to the first embodiment, the steering wheel c is arranged axially and the tractor is formed as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, that is, as follows.

   Concerning the chassis a of the tractor, it is constituted by an assembly comprising, between the two coaxial wheels b, a frame supporting the engine, its ancillary operating and control members, the wheel axles as well as the connecting members. said axles to the motor, said members comprising, of course, a gearbox, and an arm d fixed laterally to the aforesaid frame and suitable for supporting at its end the offset pivot of the wheel c;

   said arm being advantageously disposed horizontally and horizontally, as shown, to allow a slight steering of the wheel in the direction where it meets the arm d,
Concerning the assembly of the wheel c, this is done by an assembly similar to those of the spindles of the di- wheels.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 rectrices of automobiles, a worm 2. barely with toothed a sector f integral with the spindle g, ensuring the orientation of the wheel, said worm being appropriately connected to a steering wheel.

   As regards, finally, the proper means for connecting the wheels to the engine, they are constituted, for example, by arranging, immediately following the engine, with the interposition of a clutch, a gear boot and by connecting the gearbox. output shaft h of said gear boot, respectively to wheels b and c, as follows.

   As regards the means for the connection of said output shaft with the wheels b, it is arranged in such a way that this connection can be removed or established at will, this for example by having recourse, for this connection to a train d 'gears at least one of which can slide on its axis along splines so as to be able to be brought into or out of engagement with the neighboring pinion.

   And, as regards the means for the connection of said output shaft h with the steering wheel, they are arranged so as to have a positive connection; this is why, for example, a chain sprocket is placed on the output shaft of the gearbox; it is placed opposite said sprocket, and on a shaft j, appropriately carried by the end, free of the arm of a second IL chain sprocket suitable for connection. at the first by an appropriate chain I, and, finally-, we connect said shaft j, by two angle transmissions using a vertical shaft m serving at the same time as a pivot of the rocket L the steering wheel, to a solid shaft n - Daire of said steering wheel 2 and supported by the.

   rocket g
According to the second embodiment, the steering wheel is offset and the tractor is formed, as shown in FIGS. 4 to 8, that is, as follows.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   Regarding the chassis a of the tractor, it is constituted as it has just been said above except that the arm d is arranged in such a way that it is arranged axially and has a form of butt raised up.

   Said arm is subjected to a hollow vertical axis ±, suitable for maintaining, journaled in its interior, a hollow shaft. p.

   It is arranged in such a way, the aforementioned arms, axis o and shaft p, that, a throwing rocket supposedly fixed to the lower part of the shaft p, said rocket can support the. wheel. 2. so @@@@@@ (when said wheel ±. is parallel to the wheels 1a), and the wheel 2. thus mounted can be oriented in all directions, without meeting the arm d, by pivoting the shaft 12 .. in the hollow axis o.

   A helical wheel f suitable for engaging with a screw e suitably connected to a steering wheel is secured to the shaft p at a suitable location.

   Concerning the means for connecting the output shaft h of the gearbox with the wheels b, they are advantageously arranged as has just been said above in relation to FIGS. 1 to 3.

   Concerning, finally, the means for the connection of the output shaft h with the steering wheel c, they are arranged so that said means in no way interfere with the orientation of the wheel c, give a positive connection and allow to obtain at will, for the wheel the two directions of / rotation; this is why, for example: a chain sprocket is placed on the output shaft of the gearbox; one has, opposite said pinion and on a shaft j¯ carried. appropriately by the free end of the arm d,

 a second chain sprocket k, suitable for being connected with the;

   first by a suitable chain, said shaft is connected ..1, By two angle transmissions using a vertical hollow shaft m coaxial with the hollow shaft and passing through the interior of the latter, to an integral shaft n of the wheel .2 and supported by the rocket g; and, finally, means are provided for reversing the driving direction of the wheel c, which means are formed, for example, by mounting with long keys, on the shaft m, a sliding gear q comprising two pinions facing angle which can be, at will, one or the other brought into engagement with the angle pinion r wedged on the shaft n, the movements of said slide being, for example, controlled by a return kinematics s actuated by the driver and comprising a rod t passing through the interior of the shaft m.

   As a result, a tractor is obtained which allows, as will be explained below, a type of special maneuver, in particular during U-turns; said tractor being able, according to. way it will have. been established, move normally with his. steering wheel at the front or rear. In the latter case, if one wishes to use the tractor at the. traction of so-called "automatic lifting" plows, the frame of the plow will advantageously be fixed to the arm d.

   It should be noted that, in the same last case, the main load of the tractor being supported by the front wheels, the tendency of the tractor to tumble is reduced, by lifting of its front, during traction, or even , where appropriate, under the influence of the cantilever consisting of a plow in the raised position.

   The mode of use of a tractor thus established could be as follows, among others, assuming, first of all, that the direction of travel "forward" of the tractor is that for which the steering wheel is the front wheel.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   For. walking in a straight line or comprising bends of large radius (route on the road, sinuosities to be followed during traction) and, in general, starting where the tractor can behave like an ordinary vehicle , we will use ... the gear or gear changes as we usually do on motor vehicles.

   On the other hand, as soon as it is desired, taking advantage of the possibility afforded by the invention, to have the tractor describe very tight turns for which the turn will be. located between the driving wheels b, this for example pour'faire make the tractor the U-turn that it must perform at the end of the race in a field, the following maneuvers will be carried out.

   Having, if necessary, made the tractor move forward until its front wheel is against the very limit of the field, we drive the wheels b (fig. 9) crazy, steer the wheel .2 (fig. 10) ) so as to bring the center of rotation to a point such that, after a half-turn, the tractor is in the position it must occupy to distribute in the opposite direction, the front wheel is set in motion by the engine which, starting the assembly, makes it perform the desired U-turn (fig. II), and, either the front wheel is straightened if its steering amplitude is not at least 180, or else, if the tractor has been set up accordingly as indicated above, the front wheel is steered further until it is, after approximately 180 rotation, parallel to the rear wheels (fig.

     12), and we reverse the direction of. Connection of the engine to the front wheel by means of the change of gear relating thereto.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   After which the tractor is ready to resume its operation. walking in the opposite direction having turned on itself.

   The second case which has just been considered allows, so that it is easily understood, the driver to do a very regular job even with a tractor with a de-axed front wheel, simply by ensuring that his wheel remains.

   If, contrary to what has been assumed, above, the meaning. forward gear of the tractor is that for which the steering wheel is the rear wheel, it is obvious that the mode of use and the advantages remain the same.

   And, either we are content to proceed as it has been said, or else, and better, we have recourse to provisions such as the following and which can, if necessary, be used in isolation.

   According to said arrangements, the aforesaid steering bodies are arranged in such a way that, when desired, these bodies can be rendered inoperative, the orientation of the wheel being made free and then being able to take place under the influence of its tendency to rotation when driven by the motor.

   , This why-, for example and as represented freezes 6 and 7, one arranges in such a way the worm of directione, which, can be released from with the. wheel

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 the frame is provided in a direction normal to that of the axis o, and means are provided for moving the aforesaid screw and ensuring that it is held in place in its two extreme positions.

   For example, for each journal, said means are constituted by two levers u bracing themselves in alignment under the action of a spring v to keep the screw e in engagement with the wheel! and can be caused, for example, by a cam w, to fold up in the manner of a compass, thus causing the screw e to come out of engagement with the wheel f.

   For the control of the two cams w, there is provided a rod x which can be operated by the driver.

   It will be understood that, once the steering has been disengaged, and if the power of the motor is transmitted to the wheel c, said wheel will orient itself by itself since it will be. free to do so.
 EMI10.1

  A vBntagQUS9ment is added to the device just described an automatic system for stopping the steering of the wheel c, this system possibly being constituted by a plate y, integral with the shaft p, the plate carrying projections specific to abut. , when. the robbery will be. that determined by the very position of said protrusions- ,, against an erasable stop! .. which can be mounted on the same axis x as the cams w and be brought into its stop position by an appropriate rotation of said axis x.

   The devices just described greatly facilitate the maneuvering of the tractor and, to accomplish a half-turn, this maneuver is as follows.

   Having driven the wheels b mad, the steering is driven mad and the stop is placed in its stop position.

   You engage the clutch and, under the influence of the motive power, the wheel ± turns until the mist intervenes, which, if placed in the desired place, as it will be. easy to do, immobilizes the plane of the c dana sa wheel.

 position for which the center of rotation is at the desired location (fig. 10).

   The engine force then causes the tractor to make a U-turn around said center of rotation (fig. 11) and, when the U-turn has been completed, the stop is erased and the steering continues by itself, the wheel returns to position. parallel to. wheels b (fig. 12) on the side opposite to the one it occupied previously.

   At this moment, the clutch is disengaged, the direction of coupling of the wheel c is changed, the rear wheels are re-coupled with the shaft h and the tractor is ready to start again.

   As goes without saying, and as is moreover already apparent from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various more particularly considered parts; it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants, in particular those where the chassis of the tractor, or the devices for connecting the engine to the wheels, or the devices for the steering, its release and its stops, would be established in any way other than those described, the conditions of use of the tractor remaining the same.
