<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

'HAND MACHINE FOR TORCH CUTTING -!,' Invention relates to a hand machine for cutting. torch with mechanical control of the advance, machine in which is used, in accordance with the invention, as a motor agent, the strongly compressed oxygen which is used for cutting. The motor unit is constituted by a turbine wheel, mounted in a housing. For the oxygen used to operate the turbine, a special valve is available which allows the number of turns of this turbine to be adjusted according to the thickness of the metal to be cut.
If this jet of oxygen is not sufficient to cut very thick pieces, additional oxygen is supplied by the ordinary valve serving to admit the oxygen intended for the cut. The rota. tion of the turbine wheel, to a number of. determined revolutions, is transmitted with reducing action, in the manner of the Sochor system, to a sleeve whose rotation is itself transmitted by means of toothed wheels to one of the driving or advancing ge.lets and to the by means of other toothed wheels to the other advancement roller. Such a system is described in the

German patent. No. 446.140.
In this system, the axes of the two drive pulleys coincide, in the known manner, with the center line of the cutting burner.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, a chine or hand cutter, the advance of which is done mechanically; but which is guided by hand.
In this drawing:
The. fig. 1 shows the machine in side view with partial cut.
Fig. 2 shows in elevation the arrangement of the valve.
Fig. 3 is a front view of china cut away.
The cylindrical head 1 of the ordinary burner 24 for cutting by hand is carried by the casing 5 of the turbine, The impeller 4 of the latter acts, from the point of view of the number of revolutions which it executes, in the manner of the Sochor gear, by exerting a reducing or moderating action on the sleeve 5.
Its movement is transmitted by the angle wheels 6, 7 and the straight toothed wheels 8, 9 to the drive roller 14 and, on the other hand, by means of the shaft 10 and the straight toothed wheels 11, 12 to the drive roller 13. The control is therefore performed uniformly on the two drive rollers 13, 14. The head 1 of the burner is connected to the valve body 2 by the oxygen inlet pipe 15 as well as by the pipe oxygen 16 and acetylene pipe 17.
The valve body 2 is further supported by a pivoting roller 19 mounted in the fork 18.
Before proceeding with the cutting, the part to be cut must first be sufficiently heated, which is achieved by moderately opening the acetylene valve 20 and the hot oxygen valve 21. the part in question is sufficiently heated so that, under the effect of the oxygen jet, the worked part can be cliassed or pushed back, the oxygen valve 22 of the turbine is opened, so that the high voltage oxygen is conducted via the inlet pipe 15 to the blades of the turbine wheel 4. In this way, said turbine wheel and with it the control or transmitted are set in motion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
At the same time the oxygen under high tension arrives through the bypass 23 and the pipe 16 in the head 1 of the burner and finally passes from the nozzle 24 over the worked material which it discharges in a narrow groove, If the oxygen of the turbine is not completely suf- ficient to expel or push back the metal, the adjustment can be made with the ordinary oxygen shut-off valve, by passing additional oxygen through the pipe 10, As described , it is possible to obtain an adjustment of the number of turns of the turbine wheel ± blades 4, which is of no importance when it comes to cutting different thicknesses of metal.
The fact that high voltage oxygen, cutting off, can be used at the same time, without loss, to drive the machine, still offers this advantage that all three of the operation can be kept within moderate limits.
