Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   3 .- Le local doit être éclaire d'une manière uniforme en tous endroits sans contrastes brusques;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   La figure 1 représente   schématiquement   en plan, une table, indiquant la répartition de lumière qu'on obtient par l'utilisation du dispositif réflecteur et diffuseur qui fait l'objet de la présente invention;

   La   figure j  représente la répartition de la lumière;
La figure 4 représente un dispositifréflecteur et dif- fuseur organisé pour l'éclairage indirect dont la figure 5 re- présente la courbe de répartition d'intensités lumineuses;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  Lighting device and method of lighting by means of said devices.

   The present invention relates to a lighting device intended to satisfy all the requirements relating to obtaining an economical light which rests the eye and does not tire it.

   For good lighting, it is especially important to avoid the eye being struck by light rays of great intensity, mainly when the direction of these rays corresponds appreciably to that of rays coming from the observed point,
These drawbacks are largely eliminated by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the application of indirect lighting, but this mode of lighting is very dull owing to the absence of shadow and, on the other hand, the useful effect of the light source is poor.

   Although it is necessary to avoid too great contrasts, it is appropriate that at the point where the observed object is found there a greater illumination than at the other places of the illuminated room if one wants that the useful effect on the eye be enough- $,%, tall lover.

   On the other hand, ordinary prisms and total reflection prisms have already been used, but in this case there is always an annoying flicker caused by these prisms and, on the other hand, the distribution of light by these prisms. prisms does not yet meet all the requirements. In addition, the prisms still have the drawback of getting dirty quickly, which is detrimental to their action.

   By the application of reflectors which surround the light source, a useful effect which is satisfactory for the eye has in some cases been achieved, but this results in the disadvantage that there are violent contrasts and that the effect usefulness of these reflectors is usually too low. In addition, as a result of defects in the manufacture of these reflectors, dark areas and light areas occur on the surface to be illuminated and, on the other hand, there are sometimes annoying shimmers on surfaces. reflective objects.

   The object of the present invention, which aims to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, is based on the following considerations:
1 .- The useful effect of the reflector must be high:
2.-We must obtain a high useful effect for the eye, that is to say that the parts of the room which must be seen

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 with the most sharpness, must be lit the most strongly while completely avoiding glare.

   3 .- The room must be lit in a uniform manner in all places without abrupt contrasts;
4 .- When we proceed by indirect lighting, we must produce a certain shadow effect.

   We have tried to avoid abrupt contrasts of light intensives by placing a plate of opaline glass or frosted glass under the reflector, but this has the disadvantage of causing unwanted absorption of light and, in addition, in this case , it is difficult or impossible to adjust the direction of the light rays.

   The device which is the object of the present invention is characterized above all by the special shape of the reflectors which surround the light source, this shape being chosen so that the light rays emitted by the light source pass through the openings of said reflector when 'they come directly from the light source, or else they pass through these openings and (or) through the space which exists between the light source and the reflectors after having been reflected only once by one of the reflectors .

   The shape of the reflectors can be calculated by mathematical methods, or by graphical methods, and this problem presents no difficulty to those skilled in the art.

  It is thus possible to also adapt the shape of the reflectors to the shape of the room which it is possible to illuminate and it is not necessary, in this case, only the reflectors having the shape solids of revolution.

   In this way, a reflector device is obtained which, even when it is applied to a light source weaker than that which was originally envisaged, gives illumination

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 intensive and pleasant at the same time which makes it possible to fully utilize the great useful effect of modern incandescent lamps, since no light is seen, so to speak, by return of rays to the light source, or by absorption at as a result of repeated thinking or other causes.

   The invention is further characterized by the way of avoiding sharp contrasts between regions which must be more or less strongly illuminated. For this purpose, the surface of the reflectors is covered with roughness of a very small curvature and, preferably, these roughness are finely distributed. In this way, an effect is achieved which in the following is referred to as "directed scattering" and which consists in the fact that a thin beam of light, or a ray which strikes these surfaces, is reflected under. shape of a cone with a very small vertex angle.

   This is markedly different from the known ways of achieving diffusion, for example by means of a frosted reflecting surface in the usual way; in this case, the light rays which strike the mirror are reflected in all directions with loss of the special effect which results from the shape and dimensions of the reflectors because part of the reflected rays fall back on the light source. , or on the mirror. Directed diffusion therefore gives a novel technical effect while leaving the effect obtained by the main feature of the present invention to remain.

   When the shape of the reflector is determined analytically or graphically, in accordance with the main feature of the present inventions, there is still the liberty to give the parts of the reflectors which illuminate a surface intended for indirect illumination. a shape such that a large part of the light which fell on said surface is concentrated

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 trée on a small part of the said surface.

   In this way, however, a shadow effect is obtained in the part of the room which is indirectly lit, which reveals a certain relief and which produces a sensation pleasing to the eye.

   These characteristics, as well as some other characteristics, will be better understood by reference to the following description which is illustrated by the accompanying drawing.

  In this drawing which shows, by way of example, several embodiments of the present invention.

   FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic plan of a table indicating the distribution of light obtained by using the reflector and diffuser device which is the subject of the present invention;
FIG. 2 shows the path of all the pro- pages through the device which forms the subject of the present invention.

   Figure j shows the distribution of light;
FIG. 4 represents a reflector and diffuser device organized for indirect lighting, of which FIG. 5 represents the distribution curve of light intensities;
Figures 6 and 7 relate to a phenomenon which plays a certain role in the application of the present invention.
In the illumination of the table surface shown in FIG. 1, the light is distributed in such a way that the middle of the table is less illuminated than an annular area which surrounds said middle of the table.

   The reflector and diffuser device suspended above the table has been designated by a; 2 is the central part of the table less strongly illuminated than the annular surface 3, which has the greatest illumination and which extends to the beyond the table.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

  It is necessary to obtain a lower general illumination outside the main illumination zone 3. FIG. 2 shows how the distribution of the light is obtained, the reflector and diffuser device 1 being shown in section. The parts of said device which are attached to each other have been designated by 9 and 10, while 8 represents a light source, and the table is designated by 11. The central part of the table 11 is illuminated exclusively by rays coming directly from the light source 8, this part of the rays being limited by a conical surface 12-12.

   Inside this surface fall the rays coming directly from the. light source as well as reflected rays and therefore also the strongest light intensity in this part.

   One of the reflected rays is designated in the drawing by 14. Externally to the area delimited by the conical surface 12 follows an annular surface formed exclusively of light rays such as 15 reflected by the part 9 of the reflector and diffuser device and which n is not illuminated by direct rays.

   When the directed scattering is applied, a light beam is emitted by each of the points of the reflector and diffuser device, as shown in the drawing by the rays 14, 15, 16 and 17 and by the beams 14 - 14, 15 -15 16 -16 and 17'-17 '.

   It emerges from FIG. 2 that the rays reflected by the reflector and diffuser device no longer strike the light source, which would give rise to absorption, and that said rays are reflected only once.

  The shape of the reflector and diffuser device is such that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the amount of light reflected downward is larger than that reflected upward because part 9 is larger than part 10. As a result, the part of the light which is reflected down mainly strikes the lighter ring 3 which is on the table and around the table (fig.l) while the rays reflected upwards mainly strike a small surface of the ceiling which lies perpendicularly above to the reflector and diffuser device (see sections 16 and 17).

   The figure shows the light distribution curves measured in a chamber 5 m long by 3.35 m wide and 3.30 m high. To establish these curves, a 75 watt lamp was used. In said figure 3, there is represented by 1 the device-refiec- tower and diffuser, by 11 the table, by 18 the illuminated surface of the ceiling above said device and by 19 an object which is fixed on the 'one of the walls and which projects a 20 shade cone.

   On the central part of the table 11 it has been observed that the illumination is 160 lux, while the illumination in the more strongly illuminated ring 3 of FIG. 1 is approximately 200 lux. A photometer placed horizontally on one of the walls indicates about 14 lux. The height of the device- reflector and diffuser is 26 cm and the height of its lower edge above the high table itself of 75 cm, is 80 cm.

   A particularly high useful effect of the light source is obtained due to the fact that no loss of light occurs except on the reflecting surfaces and that these surfaces make it possible to achieve a useful effect of 80%.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 the other light losses being due only to small imperfections in the construction, for example, in the connection of the two curved surfaces or even in the edges of the device.

   In this case, the device does not reflect more than half of the light and since the other half comes directly from said device, an effect can be achieved, using the light source, of almost 90%.

   Very quiet and not very tiring lighting is obtained in the room.

   Figure 2 or 3 also shows that a person who is in normal places of the room either standing or seated at the table, can never be struck by a direct ray, nor by a ray reflected by the re-device. fiector and diffuser. In this case, it is found that an illumination of 14 lux on the walls is also sufficient. Moreover, tn can modify these light intensities by changing the dimensions of the device.

   The device which is the object of the invention can be constructed of a material such that a directed diffusion is obtained. This result is achieved, for example, by silvering this device externally when it is made of glass and by it. coating on the outside with an opaque layer of lacquer, the inside of this device being finely ground and then treated again with hydrofluoric acid. As a result of this treatment, there is a weak scattering during the reflection and it follows that the action of the reflection on the direction of the rays is a little less accentuated without the light scattering being such that it is impossible. no longer adjust the direction to be printed on the spokes.

   The arrangement of the whole can also be changed, provided that the conditions set are met. In general, the device-reflector and diffuser can be made from a translucent substance which, on the outside, reflects light, while the material is finely frosted on one or both sides of the device and worked in a qua all points on the surface also scatter a high percentage of light rays, between predetermined limits.

   In Figure 4 there is shown a reflector and diffuser device executed in accordance with. the present invention and which outputs 4 the indirect lighting of a room.

   In the section of the side wall, three parts 18, 19 and 20 must be distinguished which are connected to one another.

  Part 20 closes the device down. The light source 8 projects, in the first place, a direct cone which is limited by the lines 21 and which illuminates the middle of the ceiling 22. The part 19 of the wall to the device reflects rays of which a beam is designated by 23. , while the part 20 of the wall reflects rays which are designated by 24 and which illuminate an annular part of the ceiling 22, said annular part also being partially struck by rays coming from the part 19 of the wall.

   The upper part 18 of the reflector and diffuser device has a somewhat brisk stroke than the underlying part 19 and it reflects the beam 25.

   It follows that the luminous intensity is greatest in the middle of the ceiling and that it decreases towards the edges to arrive substantially at zero without abrupt contrast.

   In figure -5 the light distribution curve is shown, @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

The central part 26 of the ceiling is the most illuminated and it gave the objects which occupy the room a certain shade, while the device itself causes the formation of a cone of penumbra indicated by the lines 27.

   To attenuate the shadow in this cone, one does not concentrate the light on a very small surface such as for example a surface of the size of the device itself, but one distributes it on a surface larger than this device like the indicates the dotted line of the light distribution curve, if one wishes, under these conditions, to avoid the disadvantage which results from the formation of less distinct shadows, one can also eliminate this action by making the part transparent. 20 of the device, which gives rise to the formation of a direct cone 28-28 which roughly coincides with the penumbra cone 27-27.

   In this case, the shape of the device is slightly altered and as a result the parts 19-18 have a somewhat more flattened profile and concentrate the light more directly above the lamp. This results in a light distribution curve which is indicated in solid lines in said figure.

   Finally, it may be indicated that, according to the invention, it is also possible to obtain in another way the effect by virtue of which light rays coming from a determined point of the mirror are all located inside a cone whose l 'angle at the top is small and whose axis corresponds to. the normal direction in which the reflection occurs.

   As indicated above, the directed scattering results from the fact that the surface of the reflectors is provided with roughness of a very low curvature, these roughness being @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 preferably distributed in a finely divided state.

   This is indicated more exactly on figure 6 on which we have designated by 8 the light point and by 29 any point of the mirror struck by a thin light beam, beam which is then reflected in the form of a tapered eone whose axis is designated by 29-30.

   On the other hand, FIG. 7 shows a light source 8 of larger dimensions. This source can be constituted, for example, by a polished incandescent lamp or by an opaline glass bulb lamp so that the projected rays already form a cone whose axis is designated by 8-29; 8 representing the center of the light source.

     When the mirror surface is entirely smooth at location 29 the light rays shown are all reflected as a cone having the same small angle at the top. One could call this phenomenon a "primary" directed diffusion since it is obtained by an adequate choice of the dimensions of the light source itself, compared to those of the reflector, unlike what is done in the first base. lution, which could be called secondary directed scattering because scattering is achieved using the properties of the mirror surface.

   Attention is drawn particularly to the fact that by the choice of the type of frosting of the globe of the lamp, we are able to adjust the angle at which the illuminating body is observed from a certain point. A roughly frosted globe, like an opaline glass globe, will result in the entire globe acting as a light source. If we then soften the roughening more and more, for example

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 by treating it with hydrofluoric acid, the brightly illuminated part will shrink, with a simultaneous increase in the clarity of the surface, and approach the dimensions of the incandescent wire proper, which is observed with entirely clear glass.
