<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PerfectioJ.1.Call1ents to internal combustion engines, note, rtn.ent to injection engines at a, uto-a, llurn, a.
The invention relates to an internal combustion engine whose compression chamber is formed by the cylinder proper and an annex chamber communicating with it, the bottom and side walls of which are formed by a bell whose bottom edge alone is embedded in a casting closing the internal space of the cylinder. In this case, it remains between the. side wall of the bell and the casting wall adjacent to the piston body that a sometimes very narrow space, so that the part of the casting core which is intended to fill this space is relatively small and cannot be @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
removed only with great difficulty after casting.
As a result, particularly in engines where the bell is embedded in the piston, the sand particles remaining after the complete core break off while the engine is running and fall into the lubricating oil contained therein. in the crankcase, soiling this oil.
According to the present invention, these drawbacks can be overcome by using a casing, preferably in pressed sheet metal and also embedded in the cast iron, which surrounds the bell and is in contact with the embedded bora thereof, but leaves a space elsewhere free between it and the side wall of the bell. The casing therefore serves as a sort of casting core in the narrow space between the bell and the adjacent casting wall.
The drawing represents two examples of execution of the invention,
The two figures each show a form of construction in longitudinal section through the cylinder and the piston; the annex chamber is here arranged in the piston. Fig.l shows in its right half a section made perpendicular to that of its left half.
In fig.1, a designates a cylinder,] 2 the cylinder head and c an injection nozzle attached to this cylinder head., The cast piston which works in the cylinder is designated by d and the internal chamber of the cylinder the capacity of which varies during the piston stroke is indicated in e. This chamber is connected by a funnel 1: and a throttling orifice g to an annex chamber ¯4 arranged in the piston. The interior .2 of the cylinder constitutes with the funnel 1: and the annexed chamber h the compression chamber. compression chamber.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The bottom and the side walls of the annex chamber h are formed by a metal bell 1, the edge of which is only embedded in the piston. The cover of the bell and the walls of the funnel consist of an insert m pressed into the bell by press. The bell itself is encased in a casing n, of pressed sheet metal, which surrounds it and is in contact with it only at the right of its flooded edge. Elsewhere, this envelope leaves between it and the side wall of the bell a narrow annular space.
The core introduced into the casting mold to form the inner chamber of the postay must at most reach the dotted line p in the example shown.
The second embodiment (Fig.2) differs from the first mainly by the fact that the casing is provided with a bottom..9 arranged at a certain distance from the bottom of the bell. In this way a closed insulating air space is created around the part of the bell which is not flooded. In addition, the bottom..9 prevents that the oil can be projected centered the heated bottom of the bell during the running of the engine and to vaporize there forming a carbonaceous deposit.
In the middle of the bottom q of the casing is pierced a small opening e through which the pressure fluctuations which occur under the action of temperature differences during casting and running can be balanced.
In addition, the: tond.9. is provided with a recess s which serves as a support for the core used for casting.
The invention is of course not limited only to engines in which the annex chamber 11 is fitted in the piston or in which this chamber is connected by a non-gasket.

glement and a funnel with the inside of the cylinder itself. The annexed chamber can also be formed by a bell disposed in the cylinder head of the cylinder or in the cylinder itself.
