 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Compound glass nesting process.

Compound glass, that is to say glass manufactured by the application or insertion of flexible transparent sheets so as not to divide into shards when it breaks, has hitherto been used. subject to various manufacturing tests. It has been proposed, in the first place, to use reinforcing agents consisting of thin layers of gelatin or celluloid or viscose, acetyl cellulose, casein or several of these substances, but all these methods have big drawbacks.

Gelatin, for example, is not insensitive to atmospheric actions, nor to the attack of microbes.

Celluloid and the like do not adhere to glass and require a special adhesive layer, which is obtained by either softening the celluloid by means of a distillation fluid.

solvent, either by coating it with gelatin or other material sticking to the glass.

All the known methods have the disadvantage that in order to make the surfaces adhere to each other, they must be treated with any liquids which are then obliged to be removed by evaporation. It is especially this last operation which is difficult and painful.

In addition, all of these processes require considerable long-acting pressure produced hydraulically or by vacuum. Finally, all the substances mentioned have the disadvantage that they tend to lose more or less their clarity with use and to become colored.

The new process for manufacturing compound glass, a process which forms the subject of the present invention, makes it possible to avoid all these drawbacks.

For the reinforcing layer or assembly layer, the polymerization products of the ethyl ester of acrylic acid are used, which products adhere to the glass without requiring binding agents, which are perfectly clear and transparent. like glass itself, while possessing an exceptional elasticity reminiscent of rubber and being completely insensitive to atmospheric actions.

The ethyl ester of acrylic acid, which is produced in a known manner, is a liquid which tends, especially under the action of accelerating catalysts, to polymerize and to solidify giving rise when it is applied in a thin layer, to sheets or films having the transparency of glass.

The advantage of the new process is that you can pour the ester in question in a liquid state onto a glass plate, place a second glass plate on it and allow polymerization to occur between the two plates. of glass; The compound glass is thus obtained without other operations.

While current processes require completely flat glass surfaces, these surfaces are naturally not required when using the new process.

It is also possible to take the finished films produced by means of the polymerization products of the ethyl ester of acrylic acid, lay them between two glass plates and assemble them with the glass by moderate pressure and simultaneously by moderate heating. The surface of the film softens, becomes tacky without the addition of softening agents and regains its strength on cooling.

The great elasticity of the material also makes it possible to use ordinary glass in this case, even if its surface is not flat.

It may be sufficient, for certain uses, instead of producing a film between two glass plates, to only coat the glass with such a film on one side. This is also possible in the manner described, just as it is possible to coat a glass plate on its two faces with such films and also assemble more than two glass plates. The polymerization products of the ethyl ester of acrylic acid can also be replaced wholly or partially by those of the methyl ester of the acid. acrylic, 'whose properties are quite similar.
