     L'invention est représentée et décrite ici, comme incor- porée à un fourneau servant à recuire les produits de glacerie

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Dans les dessins annexés, la figure 1 est une vue   géné-   rale d'un dispositif de fourneau en vue en élévation de côté;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   On a prévu des moyens pour isoler thermiquement l'enve- loppe 5 de l'enveloppe 9, ainsi que pour permettre aux sections de l'enveloppe intérieure de se dilater librement à l'endroit de jonction de sections   voisines.   Les extrémités   ab outis santes   des sections des carneaux 35 sont pourvues de collets télesco -piques 40 comme représenté par la   ig...   Aux extrémités des sections, entre les enveloppes, on a prévu des parois 41 can- nelées en matière calorifuge, telle que plaques de transite (mélange d'asbeste et de ciment) fixées aux faces intérieures de l'enveloppe extérieure, sur ses bords opposés . et à des   bandes 42 au sommet ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  "Improvements to annealing furnaces".

   The present invention relates to annealing furnaces; its objective is an improved annealing furnace construction in which a radiant heat emitting element is disposed in the furnace, on the furnace floor, near its inlet end and under the heat carrier. the merchandise
The heat emitting element may include a combustion chamber, a flue and a distributor in which the flue opens. The walls of the furnace are arranged to carry heat insulating material distributed variously over different parts of the furnace to provide varying degrees of heat radiation along the furnace.

   An improved arrangement of drapes is also provided to prevent or counteract the intrusion of air into the interior casing or path on which the merchandise which is to be annealed is moved.

     The invention is shown and described herein as incorporated into a furnace for annealing ice cream products.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of a furnace device in side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, median and vertical section of the furnace at its inlet end. Figures 3
4 and 5 are cross sections, vertical, on a slightly larger scale, made along lines III-III, IV-IV and V-V, of figure 2.

   Figures- 6 and 7 show similar views along lines VI-VI and VII-VII respectively of fig.l.

   Figure 8 is an interrupted longitudinal section of the roof of the part of the furnace, shown in fig.6. 9 is a view corresponding to that of FIG. 2 of the oven at its discharge end.

   Figures 10, 11 and 12 show details: fig.

   12 corresponds to a section along the line XII-XII of fig.3.

   The furnace consists essentially of a tunnel formed of sections 1, 2, 3, 4, as shown in fig. 1, assembled and suitably supported so that by suitably choosing the number of double sections, it is possible to have each special case of an annealing furnace satisfying the desiderata which will be placed on it.

   The tunnel is double-walled; the inner bottom casing 5 bears on the ridges of its side faces in view, longitudinal angles 7 fixed by bolts on chairs 8, which, in turn, are carried on the outer casing 9 In the inlet part 1 of the furnace, all the space between the envelopes is filled with heat-insulating material 10, such as kieselguhr (fig. 3, 4 and 5). In the parts of the furnace following on from part 1, the outer casing sections have a slightly smaller diameter, which leaves somewhat narrower intermediate spaces.

   In parts 2 and 3, use is made of the heat-insulating lining at the bottom and on the sides of the tunnel, but there is no

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 has no garni.ture on / The roof of the interior envelope; the outer casing is provided with a roof of refractory plates with parts 11 assembled by hinges and acting as registers which can, as shown in Figures 6 and 8, be opened at will. As shown in, fig.

  7, the spaces between the side walls are uncoated in the discharge part 4 and cooling air streams can be sent therein as will be described below.

   A horizontal partition 12 which allows the heat to pass is located at a suitable distance above the planoher of the tunnel and extends over the entire length of the latter; it carries the heat-permeable product conveyor 13, which may be constituted by an endless belt of metallic fabric. The partition 12 can be formed by sheets. the perforated metal, carried on angles 14 which, in turn, are carried by transverse beams 15. Cross members 16 have been shown opposite each other, carried by overhanging brackets, fixed at distance to distance on the angles 14.

   Further than the discharge end of the furnace, there is a cooling table formed by a series of idle rollers 18 which carry the product conveyor 13, the horizontal flight of which arrives on the top of the control drum 19. and passes over it. this.

   The result of this is that the tensile force of the drum is exerted directly on the strand of the conveyor which supports the product and that the progression of the latter is regular, gentle, free from the forces and bending caused by structural irregularities. The drum 9 is mounted ctans bearings which can be adjusted separately in the horizontal direction; it is actuated by the motor 20, as shown in fig.9.

   From drum 19, the endless conveyor has. belt 13 goes over two horizontally adjustable pulleys 21 and 22 and the fixed pulley 23, from where it passes, under the barrel, on the pulley 24 established under the inlet end; !! then goes up, passes over pulley 20 and forms its volley

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 horizontal through the tunnel. Transverse barriers 26. are disposed close to pulley 24 to enclose the latter as much as possible and prevent air from freely rising into the entrance end of the tunnel.

   Elements for heating the furnace are arranged under the partition 12 in sections 1 of the inlet end.

   In the drawings there is shown the furnace mounted for heating by fuel and also by electric heat. In Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the combustion chamber 27 is shown at the entry end of the tunnel and disposed transversely to the latter. It is a hollow metal casing, preferably of a steel alloy with high thermal conductivity and capable of withstanding high temperatures without burning, the opposing ends of which are constituted by refractory blocks 28 which are pierced with. holes to admit the ends of the burners 29.

  , A suspension member 30 is fixed by rivets on each end of the casing and is carried on a bar 31. A wedge
32 is driven into the space included under the bar 31 and between the suspension member and the inner wall of the tunnel to keep the parts firmly in place. From the chamber 27 leave flues 33 in heat-conducting metal to move towards the rear to the distribution box 3 which is connected to the chimney 35. The combustion chamber, the flues and the distribution box form a heater. for the product on the conveyor 13, above the outlet, and they bring the latter to the desired annealing temperature.

   It is not necessary to provide devices to increase the natural rise of the heated air stream in the tunnel and it is preferred to have a grid-like partition 36 directly above the flues, with register plates 37 to -before sliding above and members such as those shown at 38, fig.4, to move the plates and thus adjust the heated air currents. These register plates slide

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 transversely and are arranged side by side successively in the direction of the length of part 1 of the furnace.

   In fig. 2 of the drawings, there is shown the register plates 37 provided with supports 39 for electric heating coils of known shape which can be used to replace the combustion or else in addition to the latter, if desired. .

   Means are provided to thermally insulate the casing 5 from the casing 9, as well as to allow the sections of the inner casing to expand freely at the junction of neighboring sections. The ab outis santes ends of the sections of the flues 35 are provided with telescopic collars 40 as shown by ig ... At the ends of the sections, between the envelopes, fluted walls 41 of heat-insulating material, such as transit plates (mixture of asbestos and cement) fixed to the inner faces of the outer casing, on its opposite edges. and bands 42 at the top;

   the opposite flanges 43-, the grooves bear on the outer flanges of the inner casing, but are not fixed above; in this way, the sections of the inner shell being slightly spaced from one another along their abutting edges, as shown in fig. 2, have sufficient longitudinal play.

  On the lower edges of the inner casing, the longitudinal corners 7 are permanently fixed by bolts in the center of the chairs 8a, sum represented by fig. 10, while their connections with the chairs 8 by the ends. opposing tees are grooved, as shown in fig.ll, 'so as to allow expansion in opposite directions. Heat-insulating transit plates 44 are incorporated into the chains.

   As already explained, in parts 8 and 3 of the furnace where a gradual drop in temperature must occur, the lining 10 of the wall is a little thinner and is missing at the top, while the lining 10 'outer envelope

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 higher 9 is provided with a refractory roof with hinged register parts 11, which provides space for circulation. controlled cooling air above the roof of the inner casing 5.

   In the exhaust part 4 of the furnace, the space between the side walls of the casings 5 and 9 can remain without packing and hollow and the air can be sent there by the pipe 45, the fans 46 and the nozzles 47, as shown in fig.7. The air thus introduced removes heat from the walls of the inner casing 5 and is therefore an effective adjuzait for effecting the cooling of the product.

   It will be noted, in relation to all these arrangements for gradually cooling the product (namely: reduction of the intermediate stuffing in heat-insulating material, the presence of the roof registers and the arrival of the cooling air) that all can be adjusted and modified both in operation and in relative situation and importance, to adapt the furnace to the special service conditions required and the special operating conditions.

   The brief clearly shows that a tunnel kiln has been produced in which there is no necessary and essential air flow to the annealing chamber and to the outlet thereof. The mass of air in the annealing chamber is heated at one end and, being heated, transmits its heat to the product which it floods; at the other end, the heat flow is in the opposite direction, from the product to the flooding air; the air, in turn, transfers heat through the walls of the furnace and to the outside air. At the intake end, a door 48 opens to let in the product and then closes. It is not possible to construct and operate such a device in such a way as to completely prevent the intrusion of air.

   The occasional opening of the. gate 48, located at the hot end of the tunnel causes a condition in which a current tends to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 enter, from the discharge end, into the tunnel and exit through the open door 48. To counteract this tendency, blades 49 have been placed on either side of the material's path and thus blocked the space . which, otherwise, would be free on the part of the. path of progress; in addition, drapes 50 have been provided which render from the roof of the tunnel, swinging freely and having the length required for the product advancing / below to be swept away by their free edges.

   These blades and these .tentures can be used in ad libitum number and at any point along the entire length of the tunnel. Together, they are able to stop sudden gusts or drafts coming from outside, and prevent them from entering the interior of the tunnel, which a simple blade or curtain could not do. "-
The cooling and wringer table formed by the rollers 18, beyond the exhaust end of the furnace, can be provided with members for cooling the product such as the air supply pipe 51 and the nozzles 52, to cool the product on the conveyor which progresses on these rollers.

   The advancement of the conveyor may be continuous and loads of glass may be introduced in a substantially continuous motion, or alternatively from time to time through door 48 and be placed on the conveyor in the furnace.
