En effet, on a notaUl!1lent: 1 ) CO +- 2nO . Zn -r CU2 2 C02 + C =- 2 CO 3 200 + 2ZnO - 2ZN + 2002 etc.
4 Zn0 + C - Zn + CO 5 Fe + C02 : Fe0 + 00 etc.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
de la précipitation électro-statique;

"PROCESS FOR THERMAL OR ELECTRO-THERMAL REDUCTION OF OXIDES TO OBTAIN VOLATED METALS SUCH AS ZINC"
In the main patent? 355.018, of October 17, 1928, a process has been described and claimed which makes it possible to practically carry out the reduction of certain metal oxides, in particular of the zinc oxide obtained by the treatment of blends, under new conditions, comprising in particular:
1) the use of the gaseous reducing agent at a pressure above atmospheric pressure, so as to increase the speed of the reduction.
2) the use of capacities with metal walls and consequently sealed thanks to the lowering of the working temperature to around 1000.
3) The almost quantitative use of fuel:

The experiments carried out since then have made it possible to specify more closely the reaction conditions in a

The method can be carried out using i:, hp, ', "'" '110Ue or electro-thermal heating.
EMI2.4
These experiences give rise to a number of new possibilities.
First, the pressure can be by the reactions themselves in the reducing apparatus, without any use of motive force. It suffices in fact to introduce at the beginning a certain quantity of carbon monoxide gas, carbonic acid or even oxygen so that the pressure rises by itself as soon as the temperature is sufficient, if it exists in
EMI2.5
the apparatus an auxiliary reducer, carbon, iron, etc .. capable of reducing the e C0 to the level of CO.
Indeed, it was noted! 1 slow: 1) CO + - 2nO. Zn -r CU2 2 C02 + C = - 2 CO 3 200 + 2ZnO - 2ZN + 2002 etc.
4 Zn0 + C - Zn + CO 5 Fe + C02: Fe0 + 00 etc.
In the experiments, it was possible to follow the increase in pressure with a manometer, which is all the more rapid and higher the higher the temperature.
From this again results the important possibility of starting the reaction at a suitable temperature. On the contrary
EMI2.6
1'13 J 'in the Belgian or Silesian methods, for long hours, notable quantities of rich carbonic acid and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
harmful to the production of the metal, are generated in the crucibles.
What is more, what about the reaction? 2, the formation of carbon and carbonic acid is favored by pressure and thwarted by temperature.
Since, on the one hand, the formation of CO 2 is very detrimental to obtaining the metal and as it is the same for the eventual release of the divided carbon which could cause obstructions, it is important to avoid cooling. slow gas and preferably use moderate pressure.
However, it may be advantageous to relieve the pressure only in certain initial phases of operations; in any case, it will be necessary to withdraw, by means of a regulator, a certain volume of carbon monoxide which can therefore be taken to a gasometer or else recompress or even burn or use in any way.
Experiments have shown that while adjusting the pressure to the most favorable value at each moment. operations, it was necessary to circulate the reducing gas incessantly:
1) through the load of minerals,
2) through a layer of glowing carbon to regenerate carbon monoxide.
30) through a condenser, to then return to the ore charge, possibly with prior passage over glowing coal.
The process cycle can therefore be followed on the installation device shown schematically in FIG. 1 and considering the schematic section of the furnace shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing in which designates the furnace with a heated solid reductive capacitor, c. a condenser, a dust collector, ē a fan, f a heater, g a heated solid reductive capacitor, r denoting a resistor for electric heating
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
inner rod (Fig.
2) -
The advantage of such a device, besides avoiding losses of gaseous fuel and metallic vapors, is also lead to the same result as if a very large quantity of rich carbon monoxide were employed. In this way the zinc vapors from hot regions can be carried away as they are produced, and on the other hand the C02 content of the circulating gas is thus reduced at all points of the apparatus to a value as low as possible , favorable condition as much in the reduction zone as in the condenser.
The volume and consequently in the closed apparatus the pressure of the gaseous reducing agent, increase incessantly because of the reduction reactions mentioned under figures I and 5 on page 2.
Per tonne of zinc produced, 350 m3 of carbon monoxide (brought back to ordinary temperature and pressure) will theoretically be generated in these reactions. As a result, by introducing at the beginning a volume of reducing gas equal to the capacity of the apparatus and under the chosen starting pressure, during the reduction, either continuously or intermittently, a volume of carbon monoxide of about 350 m3.
This almost entirely pure carbon monoxide can be used for any suitable purpose.
As for the volume of gas which will pass through the condenser, it will therefore be above all determined by the speed of circulation of the gas in the cycle and this speed will be above all limited by the speed of the reduction of carbonic acid by the auxiliary reducing agents. The latter itself depends both on the temperature and on the nature of these auxiliaries.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As regards the said volume of reducing gas, it is very advantageous that this volume is small for the good operation of the condenser, because the smaller this volume, the easier it is, during the condensation, to avoid the condenser. metal vapor losses.
Likewise, the price of the electrostatic separation of dust, when this mode of separation is employed, is above all conditioned by the volume of the gases to be treated.
However, a volume of 350 m3 per tonne of zinc is extremely favorable. In some cases 1000 m3 can be electro-statically dusted with less than 0.2 KW.H.
The economically advantage thus obtained by the incessant circulation of the reducing gas very far compensates for the low expenditure of motive force necessary to cause this circulation.
In the case where it is possible to achieve the interior electric heating by a resistor r (Fig. 2), the cycle is staged in such a way that the excess heat supplied by the resistor serves to heat the carbon layer which regenerates the CO. , the outer metal wall being able to be kept at a moderate temperature.
In this way, a very rational device is produced which limits as much as possible the external heat losses of the furnace.
In the event that outdoor heating is used, it will be necessary, on the contrary, to imitate the pressure and destruction of the walls by all appropriate means.
The execution of the cycle is therefore independent of the value of the pressure adopted and it can be done either by using known heating means, or by using electric heating by internal resistors made of iron or iron alloys or possibly by resistors in carbon or other suitable material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In this case, it is possible to considerably improve the electro-thermal efficiency and at the same time the chemical efficiency by arranging the apparatus as shown in FIG. 2.
The resistor transmits its heat directly to the blende charge mixed or not with carbon in zone a, where it is essential to maintain a very high carbon oxide content. To this end and with the aim of recovering a portion of the heat emitted by the resistor, two zones b and d of regeneration for the reaction are established, as shown in the figure.
002 + C # 200 the first 12. where the gas'00 passes out of the restriction zone a; the second from which the gas passes before its re-entry into a after having been reheated in the heat, recuperated.
By adjusting the speed of the circulating gas, it will be possible at any time to bring very rich carbon monoxide into the reduction zone a and also into the condenser c. Such a device favors the efficiency of the operation in many ways.
It is interesting to note that a roughly analogous process can be accomplished by substituting hydrogen for carbon monoxide and divided iron for carbon in the area
In this case only, the condensation of the zinc may be accompanied by the condensation of water vapors and the zinc will necessarily be collected in the powder state.
Among the advantages thus realized, that of regulating the condensation conditions of the zinc can be regarded as important. It is in fact such as to possibly allow almost total recovery of the metal in vapor or dust by the possible application.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
electro-static precipitation;
the volume of gas to be treated per tonne of metal (as indicated above) being very low and the quantity of vapors supplied to the condenser not exhibiting the irregularity of ordinary operation, the separation of dust and vapors can be done economically even electrostatically, because the cost thereof depends above all on the volume to be treated.
