<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

binoculars 3 in shape of 8.
Each link 2 comprises three elastic longitudinal branches 2 forming an equilateral triangle circumscribing the sleeve of the cartridge; these branches are made of robust steel wire and joined by end discs 2b (Fig. 4) at their ends bent b inward; in the end discs 2b are rotatably mounted the junction pins 2c serving as supports for the binoculars 3 and the head 2d of each junction pin 2c immobilizes the latter in the end disc 2. The cartridge P is located in the longitudinal branches between the two end discs 2b so that it cannot move in any direction.
Each of the two end discs of each link has internally on the head 2d a reinforcement serving to prevent any unwanted ignition, in the event of an impact on the chain, by a foreign hard body engaged between the bottom of the chain. cartridge and end disk.
The junction points of the different links have such dimensions and shape that the chain can not only turn and move freely in everything but that the different links can be juxtaposed side by side in a zigzag way, so that the ammunition housed in a container with such a chain on which the cartridges are juxtaposed by touching takes much less space than ammunition mounted on one on which the cartridges are, so to speak, divided into individual layers in the unwound state.
In the guide tube 1 is mounted a concentric guide tube which extends approximately the entire length of the guide tube and over the sides.

On the other side of the guide tube 1, opposite the pawl 6, is hinged a retaining pawl 8 bent at right angles downwards, engaging through a slot 1d inside the tube and on which s' supports the outer front face of the front end disc 2c of the link. At its rear end, the pawl 3 widens into a cam turtle 8a, the point of which passes through a slot 1 of the guide tube and rests on the cartridge which is in the link, that is to say on the projectile, and maintains the pawl lowered in antagonism to the action of a compression spring 9.
In the central part of the guide tube 1, to the right of the retaining pawl 8, is articulated a stop pawl 10 bent at right angles downwards, engaging through a slot 1f of the guide tube inside the latter and hooking behind the front face of the rear end disc 2b of the link, which has the effect of locking the link in its position. A spring 11 hooking onto an appendage 10a of hook 10 and resting on guide tube 1 maintains the pawl in the locked position.
Approximately at the height of the pawls 8 and 10, but perpendiculaffement to these in the sound of the perimeter, are mounted on supports 12 fixed to the guide tube 1 in the same longitudinal plane, two hammers 13 curved at an angle straight towards the axis of the tube and able to engage via slots 1g of the guide tube 1 inside the tube 1, the forked ends 13a of the strikers 13 embracing the branch

greater than the distance between the two strikers, one of the two arms would pass twice over a cam 15I and II, which is avoided by the fact that the arms and their ca @ es are offset transversely between them.
The operation of the device described is as follows. As soon as the cylinder head socket of the bar cammes
15 connected to this socket, socket and bar which are in the position shown in FIG. 5, have arrived at their extreme posterior position, the firing pins 13 meet the cartridge P1 with such force, as a result of the rapid movement of the breech sleeve and the cam bar, that the cartridge is driven out of the link. that was holding her back and she fell in thunder.
The cylinder head sleeve then moves forward again under the action of the advancement spring, not shown, the advancing pawl 6 (shown in dotted lines as at the bottom of FIG. 4), which pawl is come to be placed behind the front end disc 2, causing this link which pushes the empty link in front of it by making it come out of the guide tube. This empty link was previously released, under the action of the spring 9, from the stop pawl 8, which no longer rested by the tip 8a forming a cam on the output cartridge p1.
During advancement, the front end disc of link 2 first lifts stop pawl 10 and passes underneath; following the projectile engages under the tip 8a forming the cam of the retaining pawl 8, which it rotates so that it engages again on the path of the link and retains the mail on, which has come get into the correct position,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
end disc now abutting on the stop pawl, while in the meantime the stop pawl 10 has also slipped over the end disc, behind the link carrying the cartridge p2, locking it, so that this link can no longer perform a reverse movement and that it is immobilized between the retaining pawl 8 and the stop pawl 10.
At the same time the cartridge p1 introduced previously in the thunder is fired, the breech case and the bar to. cams 15 slide backwards as a result of the reaction of the blow and the same play begins again with the muzzle P2. The guide tube 4 always produces the correct introduction of the following links, so that these are always in the correct position. On leaving the guide tube, the empty links are collected in a container. However, devices could also be used such that each link automatically disengages and falls after ejection of the cartridge.
Such a device is shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the first of which shows the ends of two links 2 hooked to each other. The rear end disc 2b of the right link normally comprises the pivoting junction pin 2c, the head 2d of which has on its inner face the hollow mentioned above. The anterior end disc 20 of the following link is slightly thicker than the posterior disc and it comprises in the center of the perforation a shoulder 21 on which a compression spring 22 is supported surrounding the ankle 23 and being held compressed by the head 23a of this ankle, this head
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
leaning on the tip of the projectile. At the outer end, the ankle has a cone 23b.
The end disc 20 comprises in its low-cut outer part 20a a groove 20b in which the two lateral appendages 24a of a spring loop 24 engage, the loop being kept apart by the cone 23b. The two links are kept assembled, so as to be able to move in all directions, by a ring 25 passing through the loop 24 and the pivot 2c.
As soon as the cartridge P is pushed out of the m & illon, the head 23 becomes its fulcrum, the spring 22 pushes the pin 23 and the cone 23b backwards, the ends of the spring loop 24 approach one another. the other, so that the appendages 24a come out of the groove 20b and the loop 24 falls with the ring 25 which is hooked there @@@@@@@@ and the link 2. This is repeated for each link when the cartridge is driven from the next link.
. Fig. 10 is a schematic cross section of the assembly. of a single guide tube F with the R tube of the machine gun, while the. fig. 1 shows the assembly of two guide tubes F1 and F2 with the tube R. This assembly allows the simultaneous use of different ammunition without long intermediate handling; it is therefore possible, for example, when firing on airplanes, to bring through one of the guide tubes F1 a chain loaded with explosive projectiles and by the other guide tube F2 a chain loaded with luminous trail projectiles. The feed pawls 6 of the two intake devices are so constructed. to be able to be transposed by hand.
