  " Accouplement   à   plateaux lisses. "

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Smooth plate coupling."
The present invention relates to a smooth plate coupling for motor vehicles and has the dual purpose: 1) to allow a progressive start, that is to say without jerk, of the vehicle, without it being necessary, such as it was the case until now, to take special precautions when engaging the coupling by means of the pedal! 2) to facilitate the assembly of the coupling in vehicles of different construction, so that, in the event that the engine with the flywheel and the coupling are manufactured by different factories,

   these two organs are to a large extent made independent of each other. The smooth attack of the two elements of the coupling is obtained, according to the present invention, by the special arrangement of weaker springs acting in the opposite direction to the main coupling spring, in the direction of damping, when engaging,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of the coupling. The ease of assembly of the coupling results from the fact that all the parts of the coupling form a continuous whole and can be mounted as such on the flywheel belonging to the motor, so that their manufacture is not influenced. except the threaded holes for fixing.

   The accompanying drawing represents several embodiments of the object of the invention. Fig. 1 shows a front view of the coupling with the cover removed in the upper half. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in the vertical plane of symmetry of the coupling. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show, in section, various embodiments of the back pressure spring.

   The flywheel disc 1 of the engine constitutes at the same time, in the known manner, the casing of the coupling and has, as such, a surface worked to serve as a bearing surface for the coupling ring, as well as 'a certain number of tapped holes, on the edge, for fixing the casing cover 2. In the manufacture of the flywheel 1, therefore, according to the present invention, only these two points, this which does not cause difficulties.

   The construction of the coupling comprises, in the known manner, a main coupling spring 3 which bears, on the one hand, against the sliding sleeve 4 which can be moved on the shaft by means of the pedal and, on the other hand, against the casing cover 2 screwed onto the flywheel 1.

   The ends of the long arms of a number of radially directed two-arm levers 5 engage in recesses of the sliding sleeve, which are mounted on the inner face of the casing cover and press by their pe - small arms, when the coupling is engaged, on the jaws of an intermediate ring 6 engaging, by tongues 7 directed radially inwards, in the grooves of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 rim of a base ring 8.

   These grooves are wider: that @ the tongues which enter them and, for this reason, when the coupling is disengaged, springs 9 fixed to the intermediate ring 6 and pressing on the edges of the base ring 8 hold the 'intermediate ring remote from the latter. Stops 10 located on the edges on either side of the springs 9 prevent rotation of the intermediate ring 6 with respect to the base ring 8.

   Springs 9
 EMI3.1
 act screw "st" screw of the main spring dJ, aoeôoupidmen% 3, t 4 '. according to the present invention, such as counter-pressure springs, so that when the coupling is suddenly engaged by the quick release of the pedal, there is no jerky application of the pressure. base ring 8 on the coupling ring 11, but, as the tension of the springs 9 increases, a gradual increase in the pressure exerted on the coupling ring 11.

   Also in order to lift from the coupling ring 11, when the coupling is disengaged, the base ring 8, transversely directed leaf springs 12 are clamped above the springs 9, which support leaf springs, by their free ends, on the drive studs 13 protruding into the en, .. 'veloppe 1 and guiding, the base ring 8. @
The placement of an intermediate ring 6 can, in order to simplify the construction and make the manufacture less expensive, be omitted (fig. 3) if the springs 9 are fixed on the base ring 8 and if the pressure levers 5 press, by their small arms, directly on the ends of the springs 9.

   It is also possible, if one does not wish to place the pressure levers 5 on the springs 9, to choose, instead, one of the constructions according to Figures 4 and 5, in which the spring acts, under the shape of a coil spring 14 or a leaf spring 15, on a solid or hollow pin 16 which is guided in a channel of the base ring 8 and on

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 which presses lever 5,
The back-pressure springs 9 can also, without their general action being modified, be arranged at the places where the levers 5 are fitted, so that they replace the pivot point of the latter and make it elastic.

   The levers 5 act, in this case, not only as two-arm levers, but also as one-arm levers, the pivot point being at the place of application of the small arm.

  Fig. 6 illustrates an embodiment of this arrangement of the spring 9, in which the axis hole of the lever 5 is established as an oval hole 17 behind which the spring 9 presses on the lever 5. Instead, the place of mounting the lever 5 can naturally also take the shape of an oval hole and the spring 9 can press on the axis.

   CLAIMS. l, Smooth plate coupling for motor vehicles, comprising a coupling plate fixed to the controlled shaft and a pressure ring which can be pressed against this plate, characterized in that the pressure levers (5) controlled by the main coupling spring (2) subject directly or indirectly to springs (9) weaker than said main spring (2), while their pressure increases on the base ring (8) during the engagement of mating, increasing tension.
