Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

     @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 scorie variable.

   On se sert de préférence d'un four(qui poitrine ouverte- peut être un four poitrine ouverte à réverbère ou   "à   air") dans lequel une flamme non   réductrice   est dirigée sur la charge avec laquelle aucun combustible n'est mélangé;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

On peut également faire usage d'un four à puits sans relier directement celui-ci au four à sole;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  "Improvements to processes for preparing molten slag, especially usable for forging or the production of wrought iron"
The present invention relates to a. improved process for obtaining and remelting synthetic slag and, more especially. slag which can be used, in the ASTON process, for the production of wrought or wrought iron, as, for example, it is said in Belgian patents @ n 90.235 of August 14, 1920 and n 312.096 of @ September 8, 1923.

     @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

In the application of the ASTON process, it is important that the slag have an even and uniform composition and properties corresponding to the most desirable type of puddling slag obtained by the hand puddling process.

   When keeping such a uniform quality slag, ASTON wrought iron is of a uniform quality superior to that of hand-wrought iron by a process where slag control is not possible.

   To melt and remelt the slag by the ASTON process, a cupola heated with a solid fuel such as coke was first used; but the slag did not have uniform composition and properties.

  The Applicant Company has found that the coke reduced some of the iron oxides contained in the slag forming material loaded into the apparatus, which caused the formation of a metallic iron deposit in the. crucible or in the bottom of the cupola. This reduction of iron oxide increases the proportion of silica contained in the slag and may render the latter unsuitable for use in the ASTON process. Due to variations in the melting temperatures (in the upper areas of the cupola column of material), in the quantity and pressure of forced air, in the humidity of the atmosphere and in 'other uncontrollable variable factors, the proportion of reduced iron oxide varied, which resulted in the formation of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 variable slag.

   The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of the synthetic slag and for the remelting of the slag, said process making it possible to obtain a substantially uniform product corresponding to the best slag obtained by hand puddling. the reduction of iron oxides is substantially prevented and the desirable proportion of silicates is thus retained in the slag.

   In the application of the present procedure: the slag or the materials which give rise to the latter are melted or remelted, in the presence of a non-reducing atmosphere.

   Preferably, an oven (which open chest - may be a reverberant or "air" open chest oven) is used in which a non-reducing flame is directed over the load with which no fuel is mixed;
The fuel used can be gas, 'gasoline or powdered coal, the combustion taking place outside the slag charge and not inside that charge like this'. occurs in ordinary use of a cupola heated with coke or other fuel. solid wheat.

   The carbon contained in the fuel must be gasified, by complete combustion, in the presence of excess air, so that the quantity of carbon absorbed by the bath is almost zero and the bath is the seat of '' a substantially insignificant reduction of oxides,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

In the interests of economy, it is preferable to first heat or melt partially or completely the solid charge, before collecting the liquid slag bath on the hearth, preferably by means of a well furnace. vertical containing the slag forming materials or the slag to be remelted, without employing, in said shaft furnace, coke or other solid fuel.

  The well should preferably be heated by the combustion products passing through it, coming from the hearth furnace and can be superimposed on the furnace in question. In this way, the hearth furnace does not need to be regenerator type, because the column of material contained in the well furnace absorbs a large part of the heat from the gases before they pass through the chimney,
It is also possible to make use of a well furnace without directly connecting the latter to the hearth furnace;

   but in this case, we direct the strongly heated combustion gases (which come from a flame, for example, of gasoline, gas or powdered coal) in the hearth or in the blast furnace crucible of the furnace which can be a cupola or forced blast furnace,
When using a well furnace, the feedstock giving rise to the slag, the feed or / of the slag to be remelted, must be made up of pieces large enough to allow the ascending gases to pass. This is preferably achieved by charging a sufficient proportion of solids formed from large particles.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 cakes, such as heating furnace slag, coarse gravel. lump ore or sintered ore.

   This coarse material leaves sufficient voids to allow the gases to rise, thus replacing the solid coke usually used in crucible furnaces, one of the functions of which is to provide passageways in the charge.
It is conceivable that the present process can be applied to the formation of a synthetic slag and to the remelting of a slag such as pressing which is driven out by iron burls which is welded and / recovered in the pockets. from casting or from other sources.

   In a large number of cane the charge will be constituted both by fresh materials, such as iron ore, scale, puddling slag and by other iron oxides, such as heating slag, with silicates or silica such as gravel, quartzite or sand accompanied by a certain proportion of cold slag to be remelted,
The advantages of the present invention lie in the uniformity and the high quality of the slag obtained, which plays a very appreciable role in maintaining the high quality of the obtained xx / wrought iron / by the ASTON process,

The present invention can be applied by means of very different apparatuses from each other and the method can be modified without the economy of the invention being affected by the modifications in question.
