 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  "Sulphonic acids of higher aliphatic compounds and their applications".

   In its main patent no. 341,219, the Applicant has described a process for the production of sulfonic derivatives from non-aromatic hydrocarbons, containing more than 8 carbon atoms in their molecule, consisting in treating such hydrocarbons and their derivatives.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 under vigorous operating conditions with sulfonating agents. As sulfonating agent, there may be mentioned, inter alia, sulfur trioxide.

   The present patent for improvement relates to a particular embodiment of this process which consists in treating such hydrocarbons and their derivatives,) by stirring carefully and cooling, with sulfuric anhydride gas, preferably. in the presence of an organic solvent. The method, which is easily susceptible to industrial application, enables the quantity of sulfur trioxide to be activated to be measured with such accuracy as to obtain the desired degree of sulfonation. As raw materials, particular mention may be made of fatty acids or unsaturated oxy fatty acids.

   Suitable organic diluents are, for example: benzene, carbon tetrachloride, perchloroethane, hexachloroethane and in particular trichlorethylene. The introduction of anhydride: sulfuric acid.

  Preferably, gaseous can be carried out by passing through the solution a stream of inert dry gas, such as air or nitrogen, charged with anhydride vapor.

   The absorption of this vapor by the oxyic fatty acid solution continues with such intensity that it suffices to pass the vapor over the surface of the stirred solution to obtain sufficient absorption. fast and comprehensive. It is thus possible to stop the sulfonation to any desired degree, corresponding to the amount of sulfur trioxide used.

   Sulfonation by sulfur trioxide has the advantage of requiring only the quantity of anhydride necessary for the sulfonation, while if lion

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 uses concentrated sulfuric acid, an excess of this acid is required. When using fuming sulfuric acid one even has to introduce a carrier or vehicle for H2SO4 into the reaction mass to react the desired amount of SO3.

   Another advantage of the process consists in the fact that the sulfuric acid being present in a relatively small amount, only a small amount of caustic soda lye is needed for subsequent operations to neutralize this acid and that it is not necessary for subsequent operations. It is no longer necessary to remove by prior washing a very large quantity of sulfuric acid as had to be done in the processes used hitherto.

     the products, obtained according to the process of are, this, improvement patent If one uses fatty acids or unsaturated oxyic fatty acids as raw materials, identical to the products obtained according to the French patents N 645.221 of December 6, 1927 and No. 660,023 of September 6, 1928 in the name of the Applicant Company, products which are distinguished by excellent qualities, in particular by extraordinary resistance to acids and lime. However, if the proportion of fatty acids is oxyic, an amount of sulfuric anhydride vapor is required in excess of that required for esterification of the hydroxyl group.

   In some cases, it is preferable to start from dibasic oxy-fatty acids, the hydroxyl group of which has been esterified beforehand with the means of sulfuric acid or chlorosulfonic acid monohydrate.

   The new process is applicable not only for the introduction of sulfonic groups in non-aromatic hydrocarbons, but also for processes.

   After the solution has cooled to -100%, it is passed over the surface of the. liquid at -10o to -3 always stirring well, 46 kgs of sulfuric anhydride vapor, as and when this anhydride is absorbed within the temperature limits indicated. When the sulonation is complete, the viscous mass is poured with stirring into a small quantity of ice, and it is neutralized at 0-3 ° C. with a lye or caustic soda to the desired degree. After separation of the salt solution, the carbon tetrachloride is removed by distillation in the voids. The brownish oil thus obtained corresponds in its qualities to the product, which can be obtained according to the procedure of Example 2 of French patent No. 660.023 cited above.
