   a) une "Valve autorégulartrice" -V-, qui réalise sur chaque wagon la proportionnalité des efforts aux charges variables et à l'adhérence, avec sup- pression automatique du patinage des roues et des réactions dangereuses, ainsi que des irrégularités d'action dues à l'usure des sabots , d'où les arrêts amé- liorés figurés schématiquement par la courbe E de la Fig.15. b) Un distributeur-accélérateur -D- assurant sur les longues pentes la modérabilité au desserrage et la   réaliment&tion   sans danger des réservoirs auxi- liaires ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

C'est à partir de ce moment seulement que l'air est brusquement évacué par le déplacement du tiroir;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

The object of the present invention is to improve the continuous brakes of railways by fulfilling all the conditions which were imposed in 1908 - 1909 on any continuous brake for freight traffic of the European Networks by the Final Protocol of the Convention. Berne International of 11 liai 1909 with regard to the following characteristics:

1) - Accelerator distributor, which firstly ensures a first rapid and simultaneous application of the shoes on all the elements of the convoy, effects which are standardized by a moderate action then by a complementary action, moderate to the degree desired by the mechanic, both when tightening and releasing, but without exhausting the air in the auxiliary reservoirs in the event of repeated braking at short intervals'
2) The automatic proportionality of the braking forces to the variable load of the axles of each wagon, in order to avoid dangerous reactions and slipping.
3) - The "wheel slip to avoid on slippery rails"
4) - Checking the brake test ", carried out by the mechanic alone *
5) - The ease of progressive adaptation of said devices to all continuous brake equipment in service,

   with the use of the same fittings, couplings, pipes, air pressure, engineer's valves, auxiliary devices, wheelhouses, and this, either separately or in any mixture with the brake equipment already admitted in international traffic '

HALLOT (H) the other in ordinary brakes (X)
The HALLOT continuous brake for freight and passenger wagons mainly uses (Fig. 14).

   1) - all wheelhouse and compressed air components of the types known per se, which are in current use on locomotives and passenger or freight wagons already fitted with continuous brakes of the so-called "distributor" type, c 'that is to say: - the main reservoir (not shown) - the mechanic's maneuvering valve (not shown) - the auxiliary reservoir -R- - the single-chamber brake cylinder -H- - the linkage and its accessories
2) special equipment which is essential in particular for braking long freight trains on long spans or steep inclines, namely:

   a) a "Self-regulating valve" -V-, which carries out on each wagon the proportionality of the forces to the variable loads and to the adhesion, with automatic suppression of wheel slip and dangerous reactions, as well as action irregularities due to wear of the shoes, hence the improved stops shown schematically by curve E in Fig. 15. b) A distributor-accelerator -D- ensuring, on long slopes, moderation in release and safe refueling of the auxiliary tanks;

   instead of the triple -valves *
The gain in stopping that can be achieved with the HALLOT self-regulating v & lve (average curve -H- in Figs * 15 and 16) compared to stopping a train X, fitted with ordinary gears and of identical composition , will reach approximately 48%, assuming that 50% of the wagons have their shoes not adjusted and their load -C- reduced to c

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

These average curves also indicate that at point -A- (obstacle, etc ----), where the train -H- is obtained without skidding in 218m, 80 and 16sec, 33 for a grip # = 0 , 15, train X, whose stop at -b- requires 420m, 85, will encounter said obstacle with a remaining speed equal to 68 km per hour.

   Fig. 16 indicates the average curves of the respective values of the pressures Q (shoes H) and Q '(shoes X) as well as the variations of the average retarding force Q f and Q'F, in the two trains H and X and that, for train X, the wheel slip will be determined, for # = 0.15, from 20 km per hour, hence the abrupt lowering of the curve pb = Q 'f, which is replaced by until the stop the lower value pb = p (wheel slip).

   We also see that the stop is delayed up to 27 sec, 89 for train X instead of 16 sec. 33, duration of the stopping of train H, in which the pressure of the shoes + .. 1..6 n 'is reduced neither by the wear of the shoes, nor by the variations of the load, since all the regulations are operated in block and automatically, without it being necessary to operate on each wagon any regulating lever.

   The self-regulating valve -V- connected to cylinder H can be controlled by a regulator such as, for example, the ball regulator installed on one of the axles -1- of the wagon and whose mobile collar -3-, pushed back by the coil spring -18-, controls the studs -4- integral with a hollow collar -6- whose groove drives the fork -7- of a lever-8-, oscillating around an axis -9 - fixed to the frame -
The fork -7- is designed to always remain in engagement with the collar -8- and to be influenced neither by the lateral play of the axle -1-, nor by the vertical displacement of the chassis.

   The control lever-8-, via a connecting rod -10-, a slide -11- mounted in a casing -12- 'This slide can put two orifices into communication: one-13- communicates by a pipe -14- with the chamber of the brake cylinder; the other-15- can communicate with the outside: but it is closed by an adjustment valve -16-, calibrated by an adjustable spring -17-.

   A spring -18- tends to return the regulator to the rest position and the spring -R- keeps the spool in position *
The device being at rest (position of the drawing), the fork -7- is held against the collar -6- by the spring -E- and the drawer -11- is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 mounted in such a way that it puts the ports -13- and-15- in communication variable arrangements with the 'pursued' purposes
When the wheels are rotating, the regulator -2- drives the fork-7- movement which moves the spool -11- to the right, stopping all communication between the cylinder and the atmosphere, -but, if by excess of pressure or for any reason whatsoever, the wheels tend to stall, this slowing down will reduce the action of the regulator -3- and, under the predominant action of the spring-18-,

   the orifices -13- and-15- will be brought back into partial or total correspondence, which will exhaust in fractions to the outside, through the channel 15, the excess air by lifting the valve-16-. However, an essential arrangement, this is calibrated so as to always maintain in the cylinder a minimum given pressure, regulated by the compression given to the spring -17- by the nut -20- either by hand or by any appropriate means ( operating lever, etc ...... \.

   The pressure exerted being thus reduced in the cylinder, the wheels and the governor will resume their normal rotation; but the same regulation efforts will be reproduced identically if the increase in the value of the friction of the brake shoes so requires, which consequently fulfills condition 7 specified:

    "avoid skating"
The regulator which acts on the reduction valve is characterized by the fact that it is combined so as to remain inoperative during the first phase of the reduction of the speed of the convoy, in order to maintain the highest degree of effective air pressure. in the cylinders and to come into play only when there is a significant reduction in the live force of the rotating masses, corresponding to 20 km per hour for example *
It is only from this moment that the air is abruptly evacuated by the movement of the drawer;

   but, as soon as by reduction of the fluid pressure the relation Qf <P # is re-established, the wheel tends to resume the speed of the convoy reduced to 50 km. for example-
The pressure in the brake cylinder consequently acquires a new value which for this speed has fallen below the dangerous limit Qf # P # but which will soon reach too great a value again, due to the rspid increase. the value of the friction coefficient of the blocks (f). The same regulation effects will therefore be reproduced automatically

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 until, if it is a stop, the speed limit of 20 km becomes that of the convoy itself.

   At this time, the other reduction valve again in action; but everything is organized so that, in the continuous stroke of the spool, the reduction of the pressure is exerted only in a slow and degressive manner, calculated to automatically avoid the dangerous value P mais, essential characteristic of the invention, without however going below a minimum useful pressure, that, for example equal to 0.40 P or any other which will be regulated by the spring -16- of the valve -17-, in particular by the in - intermediate of any profiled part controlling the drawer, of the kind used in order to increase the speed of the fluids flowing or the value of the fluid pressures (thrust cams, etc.)

  *
The safety of long convoys in rugged profiles requires that compressed air, even in excess, be saved as much as possible, in order to constantly maintain the greatest reserve of energy in the tanks.

   The brake cylinders must also always maintain the minimum pressure which is essential for service or other braking at reduced speed.
The initial compression of said adjusting spring or the adjustment of any other equivalent member, fluid or electric, will be effected by any arrangements known per se (screwing, pinion controlled by a rack, etc. .....

   ) either automatically by using one of the regulating means described in the patents of the applicant, or by any hand device, such as those of known types composing all reference graduations, or even by means of the operating lever with two positions , which would be prescribed in international traffic for the other models of wagons admitted '
In addition, everything is combined so that the calibrated spring -18- does not start its regulating effects until the result of all the variable and complex actions, which act on the wheel and compete actively and reactively. when braking, will have determined the preponderance of the retarding force Q f,

   i.e. the change of the non-slip condition da Q f p
This "self-regulating" valve can be applied to all compressed air brake systems of any model (Westinghouse, etc. *.), Without

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 modify neither their own mode of action, nor the play of the "Empty" "Loaded" maneuver leviar, which can be kept at the same time for all other accessory regulations.

   The device can be mounted in a different way, with all the rules of detail that would be preferred. In particular, it could only rotate when the brake is applied. For this purpose (Fig. Z. and 3), the regulator -2- is mounted on a shaft parallel to the axis of the axle -1- and supported by two bearings -21- and -22- bearing connecting rods -23- and -24- which can oscillate around the axes -25- and -26- of two supports-27- and-28 fixed to a cross member -29- of the chassis.

   The connecting rod -24- is connected to a connecting rod -30- controlled by a connecting rod -31- via a spring 32. This connecting rod 31 receives its movement of a lever -33- actuated by the piston -34- a brake cylinder -H-, which at the same time activates the linkage -38- of the brakes 'The shaft l' carries a roller
37 intended to be placed in contact with the tire of a wheel -38- 'The collar 6 of the regulator 2 drives the fork 7, which is mounted with a ball joint on the cross member 29, and, by the connecting rod 10, the fork 7 controls drawer 11 as before *
The brake cylinare H is connected, on the one hand, by the pipe 14 to the orifice 13 of the chamber of the spool 11, on the other hand,

   by a pipe 39 to the triple valve or distributor D and to the auxiliary tank Re
When the pressurized air is admitted into the brake cylinder H (Fig'2), the piston 34 acts on the lever 33, which, by means of the connecting rods 31 and 3, brings the roller 37 into contact with the wheel tire 38 and regulator 2 comes into play
It is obvious that the connecting rod 24 can be controlled by such linkage lever that it will be desirable to adopt, either for example, the brake shoe levers, or by any connecting rod of this linkage-
In Fig * 4 (variable from 2 and 3), the shaft 1 'is no longer rotated by a friction roller 37, but by a belt 10 mounted on the one hand on a pulley 41, keyed on shaft 30, and on the other hand, on a bulb 42,

   mounted on axle 1 or on any other rotating part 'The pulleys 41 and 42 will have very wide cheeks to prevent the belt from falling *
The same device as in Figs. 2 and 3 could be established to tighten the belt 40 when the brake is applied and not rotate the regulator.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 turn 2 only at this moment '
It goes without saying that all other known means can be used * for controlling regulator 2 (gears, clutches or electric actions, etc.).

   The regulator, instead of being operated by centrifugal force, could be of a type which will operate by "inertia".

   For this purpose, Fig. 5, on axle 1 or on any shaft which will be integral with its rotation, will be mounted una screw 43 on which a flywheel 44 can be screwed, threaded in the bore. By screwing this steering wheel will move, either to the right or to the left.

   A casing 45, fixed on axle 1 will surround the system. The faces of casing 45 will be drilled with holes through which shafts 46 and 47 can pass, connected respectively to two grooved pulleys 48 and 49, which will be kept in place. position by springs 50 and 51 acting on aacas 46 and 47
In the grooves of the pulleys 48 and 49 passing two forks 52 and 53, intended to record the lateral movements of the grooved pulleys.

   The fork 53 is articulated at 54 on the frame and controls a connecting rod 56 connected to the slide, described previously, and not shown * The fork 53, pivots at 56 and the lever 57 which extends it is connected by a connecting rod 58 to the fork 52 *
The operation is as follows: In normal operation, as a result of the friction existing between the screw and the nut part of the flywheel 44, the flywheel is driven in the rotation of the system.

   If the rotation takes place in the direction of the arrow and if a too violent brake stroke tends to block the wheels and, consequently, the axle 1, the screw 43 tends to stop * The flywheel 44 having stored a certain amount of live force will turn on the screw 43 and will move for example to the left by attacking the pins 45 and compressing the springs. The axes 46, the pulley 48 and the fork 32 will then move to the left and the connecting rod 55, following its movement, will operate the spool (not shown) to evacuate the excess air in the brake cylinder.

   The wheels start moving again, the flywheel 44 will release the axes 46 and as a result the system will resume its original position and the cylinder

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 brake will be isolated from the atmosphere.

   The flywheel 44 will resume the speed of axle 1 and the same forces can be reproduced.

   In the case of rotation in the opposite direction to that of the arrow and in the case of a tendency to wedge the wheels, the flywheel 44 will attack the pins 47 and the pulley 49. This will move the fork 53 which, pivoting at 56, will act by the lever 57 and the connecting rod 58 on the fork 52 and on the connecting rod 55, which will produce the same movement on the slide as before.

   The pressure of the brake cylinder will in fact be, at each instant, at the maximum value required for the load of the wagon and the grip of the wheels. As a result, braking will be maximum and wheel stalling will be avoided.

   Fig. 6 is a special control to the operating regulator and} for reducing the air pressure which is in excess in any compressed air cylinder, and the control screw of which can be actuated, at the time of braking only, by an inverter automatic, itself controlled by any device of known type, such as that of FIG. 5 for example.

   This reverser is necessary for this special type of governor, so that it always turns in the same direction, regardless of the direction of rotation of the wheels.

   For this purpose, the shaft 1 ', which receives the movement of the wheels by any suitable device (flexible, belt or gears), carries two pinions 62 and 63, mounted on it and always in engagement with a bevel wheel 64. mounted. on a shaft 65. The shafts 11 and 65 are held in position, in bearings supported by a housing 66, fixed to the frame of the vehicle. Each of the pinions 62 and 63 carries a ratchet clutch (or any other equivalent system 67 and 68) secured to the shaft 1 ', but able to slide on it in slots 69 and 70 made on the shaft 1'. Springs 71 and 72 maintain the snap.

   Whatever the direction of rotation of shaft 1, it will therefore be one or other of the catches 67 or 68 which will attack the pinion with which it is engaged and the movement transmitted to the shaft 65 will always be the same. meaning. The shaft 65 carries a screw 73, on which a threaded handwheel 74 can move, the angular movement of which is limited by a lug 75, carried by a shaft 76, carrying the grooved pulley 6, which itself transmits this movement to the control fork 7 of the regulator spool.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   The movement of the flywheel 74 has been explained above, and its role as a fluid pressure regulator has been described.

   The lateral movements transmitted to the fork 7 by the flywheel 74 during the stalling or non-stalling periods will produce the evacuation of the excess air in the brake cylinder or maintain the pressure as long as the stall pressure does not is not achieved and this, either by the valve clearance such as those of types known per se, or by the displacement of spools, combined for the effects of reduction of the braking pressure which are sought.

   By virtue of their automaticity, these devices alone make it possible to achieve, without wheel slip, the complex problem of the uniformity of braking action on all wagons, which is the essential basis of any continuous brake for long freight convoys. This action is absolutely independent of the degree of moderability of braking, as well as of the composition of the train considered, the linkages of each wagon, as well as their cylinder and heavy auxiliary tank, being, of course, calculated on the basis of the maximum effort at sabota, which will be preferred by the International Commissions.

   The distributor-accelerator D (Fig. 8 to 15) is made up of two housings -81- and -82-, in which a train of pistons 83 and 84, of different diameters moves, the sealing of which is ensured by means of segments 85 and 86-
These pistons are rigidly connected by a rod 87, which controls by means of a part 88 a slide 89, able to move on a mirror 90, pierced with three orifices a, b.

   and c, (Fig. 9)
The hole a is in communication with the atmosphere (Fig. 8) the hole b and communicate respectively with the cylinder -H- and the auxiliary tank -E- (not shown) *
The extension 91 of the rod 87 controls, by means of a part 92, a drawer 93 and a drawer 94, the latter mounted with a certain clearance and moving on a mirror 95, the orifice d (FIG. 8 and 9) is connected to the brake cylinder '
The branch of the general pipe c is connected directly to the chamber 96, where the piston 83 moves, by the channel 97 This chamber 96 carries a groove 98, arranged in such a way that, when the pistons 84 and 83

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 are completely to the right,

   communication is established between room 96 and room 99 in which drawer 89 moves.

   An orifice 100 scoops in the ice 90 (Fig'9) puts this chamber 99 in constant relation to the auxiliary reservoir -R- via a channel of small section 101, drilled in a calibrated valve 102
A channel 103 puts the brake cylinder in communication with the chamber 104, where the piston 84 moves.

   A seal 106 provides the seal between the chambers 99 and 104.

   These drain plugs 106, provided with a light 107, allow the evacuation of liquids which, after a certain period of operation, would settle in the distributor.
The housings 81 and 82 are closed respectively by threaded plugs 108 and 109, the latter pierced with an orifice 110 so that the right face of the piston 4 is always in relation with the atmosphere.

   In the normal running position of the convoy, that is to say with the brakes being completely released, the components / are in the position of FIGS. 8 and 9 and the drawer 89 is itself in the position of FIG. 10 compared to ice 90.

   This position of the spool closes the orifice 0 communicating with the auxiliary reservoir and makes the orifices a and b, that is to say the brake cylinder, communicate with the atmosphere. On the other hand, the pressurized air arriving from the general pipe ± through the channel 97 passes into the chamber 96, then, through the groove 98, flows into the chamber 99 and, through the orifice 100 and the channel 101 of the valve 102, in the auxiliary reservoir R In this position, the brakes are therefore released a and the auxiliary reservoir is normally supplied by the main pipe c 'In moderate braking, the set of pistons 83 and 84, which was previously completely to the right and in a balanced state,

   is attracted to the left due to the decrease in pressure on the left face of the large piston 83, the dimension of the groove 98 not allowing emptying of the auxiliary tank, nor of the chamber 99 of the quantity of air necessary to restore balance.

   In this movement, the slide 89 is therefore moved to the left and intersects with respect to the mirror 90 the position of Fig. 11, in which:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 a) Ports a and b are isolated, which cuts off the communication of cylinder H with the atmosphere. b) Ports c and b start to communicate, which has the effect of sending, through valve 102, then through calibrated channel 101, a certain quantity of air from the auxiliary reservoir into the brake cylinder, as well as into the chamber 104 via the channel 102, in order to operate the mobility by differential action on the left face of the piston 84.

   On the other hand, the slight drop in pressure from the auxiliary reservoir lowered the pressure existing on the right side of piston 82.

   As the pressure rises in the brake cylinder H, the resultant of the forces exerted on the train of pistons 83 and 84 which, previously, had driven the entire system to the left, will therefore be cancel, then change the meaning.

   At this moment, the train will be pulled slightly to the right and will take the position of Fig. 13. said "equilibrium" after moderate braking, position in which the orifices a, b and c are completely isolated from each other.

     . The brake cylinder is then completely isolated from the atmosphere and from the auxiliary reservoir. Similarly, the latter no longer communicates with the general pipe since the segment 85 of the piston 83 has passed the end of the supply groove 98 .

   For a depression of a given value in the general pipe C., therefore, a resulting pressure is obtained in the brake cylinder, which depends on the value of the depression made by the mechanic in the general pipe, hence moderation when tightening. .

   On the other hand, when, under the action of this depression, the train of pistons 83 and 84 is moved to the left, the part 92 drives the drawer 93, which first slides on the tiroi.r 94, the latter being entrained only when the orifices of each of the two drawers 93 and 94 overlap The movement continuing, the three holes thus superimposed come to pass above the calibrated orifice d of the glass 95 and a determined quantity of air of the brake pipe in the brake cylinder H, which has the effect of increasing the speed of propagation of the vacuum wave in the general pipe and of serving as an "accelerator", while at the same time increasing in the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 cylinder pressure,

   intended to produce a rapid and uniform first application of the blocks on all the wagons of the convoy. All arrangements of the drawers 93 and 94 and of the orifices are arranged so as not to allow the device to operate during the return of the train of pistons to the right, and this in order not to modify the value of the depression established in the pipe. general.

   If one or more other depressions are made in the brake pipe, the same effects will therefore be reproduced and the pressure in the brake cylinder will increase the new depression each time, by an amount substantially proportional to the value of the brake cylinder. depression which is the cause.

   To release the brakes, the mechanic having raised the pressure of the general pipe by a determined amount, the set of pistons
83 and 84, then receives on the left face of the piston 83, an additional pressure, which upsets the existing balance after braking and returns the piston train to the right, which tends to bring the slide 89 into the position of Fig. 10, for which the orifice c is isolated and the orifices a and b communicating, which has the effect of evacuating a part of the air contained in the cylinder to the atmosphere and of partially recharging the auxiliary reservoir.

   Therefore, the pressure decreasing on the left face of the piston 84 and increasing on the right face of the ptstan 83, as a result of the influx of air from the pipe through the groove 98, the train of pistons, when the pressure will have sufficiently decreased in the cylinder, will be driven again towards the left and will come back to the position "of equilibrium after braking" previously described, the spool 89 coming into the position of FIG. 13.

   It follows that, for a given value of the suppression exerted in the pipe, one obtains a pressure drop of a corresponding value in the brake cylinder, hence moderation when loosening e '
Further overpressures in the pipe will again produce the same effects and again give the successive loosening phases, the value of which will be proportional to the reloading of the general pipe and of the auxiliary tank.

   To obtain total loosening, it suffices to put the mechanic's valve in the corresponding position, which puts the components in the normal running position of the convoy (Fig. 10), the effects of which have been described.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 higher 'The brake cylinder is then partially drained, then completely as soon as the auxiliary reservoir is re-energized to the pressure of the general pipe.
If the mechanic creates a strong depression in the general pipe, the train of pistons is placed completely on the left and the spool 89, takes the position of Fig. 11 isolating the orifice 2 and uncovering it entirely, by connecting them. , ports b and c 'The same pressure is then established in the brake cylinder and the auxiliary reservoir, because, due to the high value created in the brake pipe,

   the resultant of the forces acting on the train of pistons is always of the same direction and of value other than zero.

   The braking value obtained is then maximum, the accelerator operating in this case as described previously It is recommended that the white pipes be fitted with all known means, the capacity of which of any appropriate volume will play the same. role than that of the brake cylinder, so as to standardize the propagation speed of depressive waves in long convoys.

   The loosening is obtained as indicated above.

   It is advantageous, in order to avoid reactions in long convoys, to obtain at the start of braking a very rapid admission of a certain quantity of air into all the brake cylinders, in order to first put the shoes in contact. with the bandage with moderate pressure, msis in as little time as possible on all wagons.

   This first application being ensured, the air must then be admitted into the cylinders only gradually and with all devices already patented by the applicant to delay this admission into the cylinders of the first wagons, which are the first to suffer the effects of the depression. in order to avoid dangerous settling on the leading vehicles, which can lead to broken couplings.

     It is for these buta that a late valve has been provided (102 Fig. 2) placed in the distributor flange going to the auxiliary tank, in which a calibrated orifice, with reduced section 21 has been made.
This valve 102 guided and calibrated in such a way that it can only rise from its seat when the pressure difference existing in the auxiliary tank and the cylinder exceeds a given value.

   At the start of braking, while the valve 102 is raised, fill it.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 age of the cylinder is done very quickly. But, as soon as the valve 102 is returned to its seat, the brake cylinder can no longer be supplied, for freight wagons, except by the single channel 101, calibrated to a talla dimension that it only gently allows the 'fluid flow and consequently filling of the cylinder to the desired pressure, in order to achieve, regularly on all the elements of a convoy, the greatest uniformity of action of the brakes and thus avoid settling on the head of the convoy
A device (not shown) (pull tab or push-button, etc.) is provided to keep the valve 102 open in the wagons introduced into short passenger trains or others.

   The supply groove 96 of the auxiliary tank has been made sufficiently small, so that during the overpressures exerted in the general pipe, the wave is not absorbed by too abundant inflows of air into the auxiliary tanks of the passenger cars. head, which would delay the loosening of the rear cars by as much and could cause the couplings to break.

   It is also advantageous, for trains intended to descend long slopes, to complete the distributor so as to allow the compressed air recharge of the auxiliary tank as quickly as possible, without loosening the shoes beyond a certain limit, at by means of a safety valve *
For this purpose (Fig. 7), the air from the auxiliary reservoir R (pipe 141) acts on a piston 142, mounted on a rod 143 and calibrated by a spring 144, the rod 143 controls a slide 145 which can move on the mirror 146, of a part 147, mounted in the axis of the hermetic cylinder 140. A pipe 148 of the part 147 makes it possible to connect the device by a pipe (not shown) to the exhaust port (a ) of the distributor described above or screw it in directly.

   Lights 149 and holes 150 drilled in the plug 151 closing the part 147, communicate the chamber of the drawer 145 with the atmosphere.

   The calibrated spring 144 causes the spool 145 to close the orifice of the tubing 148, as long as the back-up pressure of the auxiliary reservoir has not reached a value sufficient to cause the spool 143 to rise by the amount necessary to allow the complete evacuation of air from the cylinder through orifices 149.

   We also reserve the right to use the combination of use of such or such devices described for long trains with a tail valve, actuated either by devices emitting extra fast shock waves, or electrically, or otherwise, to bring into play first the tail brakes, then all the brakes of the convoy with a depression simultaneously made at the head, in order to avoid reactions between the various elements of the train.

   The invention is therefore not limited to the members shown by way of example, nor to such and such form of slide or arrangement of orifices, nor to such organization or control of the fluid pressure regulator, any other means. and all other forms or modifications being provided and which can be imagined to meet the same aims, without departing from the scope of the invention.
