<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

X2Y = Constante
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

for: Drive mechanism for \ phonograph records at constant linear speed.
For a long time, and on numerous occasions, it has been proposed to replace the uniform rotational movement of phonograph records by an accelerated movement providing the needle with a uniform linear velocity of travel of the groove, thus allowing d '' obtain from each of the turns of the recording a hearing duration that is no longer constant, but proportional to its radius.
By taking as the constant linear velocity that which corresponds to the minimum radius of a disc currently in use, the duration of the hearing is thus greatly increased, This increase in duration being, not proportional to the radius, but to the order of the square of the radius, it is easy to obtain with discs of a moderate diameter recorded by giving them an accelerated rotational speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rée, a very considerable hearing time.
The manufacture and use of such discs require the addition of a mechanism making it possible to transform the uniform rotational movement, easily obtained by conventional motors, into an accelerated rotational movement. Various devices have been proposed, all of which have been abandoned.
The speed transformation mechanism which is the subject of the present patent consists essentially of a spool or rocket animated by a uniform rotational movement which winds on itself a wire previously wound on a cylinder, and thus communicates to this cylinder an accelerated rotational movement according to a law which depends on its profile. This rocket is a portion of the volume of revolution having as its generator the curve having the equation x2 y = C.
The y axis being the axis of rotation, the x axis a perpendicular axis and C a constant determined by means of the characteristics of the apparatus which one wishes to construct; the bases of the solid being inversely proportional to the extreme radii of the recording. By rotating at a uniform rotational speed, this rocket ensures that the rotational speed of the disc to be recorded or reproduced is the acceleration necessary to maintain a linear speed / approximately constant.
The device is illustrated in the attached figures.
FIG. 1 represents a view in vertical section of a phonograph fitted with the device.
Figure 2 is a horizontal projection.
The spindle 1 with progressive radius rotating with a uniform rotational movement on its axis 2, winds on the groove 3 with pointed turns and at constant pitch, with which it is provided, the traction wire 4 which,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
previously wound on the winding drum 5, reaches it via the fixed return pulley 6 and the small idle guide pulley 7 supported by the plate 8, itself mounted on the mobile vertical screws 9 and 10. This drum 5, externally threaded at the same pitch as the spindle 1 is mounted on the fixed horizontal screw 11 also threaded at the same pitch as the spindle 1, the drum 5 and the mobile vertical screws 9 and 10.
This drum 5 is terminated by the two cheeks 12 and 13, pierced with four circular openings 14,15,16 and 17 facing each other two by two. Through these four openings pass the two arms 18 and 19 of a cage 20 movable around its axis concentric with the axis of the drum 5. This cage 20 comprises two arms, one of which serves only as a counterweight and of which the the other is in contact with the wall of one of the holes it passes through. The motor shaft 21, driven by a uniform rotational movement, causes the spindle 1 and the mobile vertical screws g and 10 to rotate in the same movement, which control the movement of the pulley holder plate; the lower strand of the wire thus always remains perpendicular to the axis of the spindle.
For its part, when the drum 5 rotates, it progresses all the more on the fixed horizontal screw 2 ′ as the traction wire has moved back further in relation to it by passing through the successive turns of the external thread of said drum. These two equal movements in the opposite direction are rigorously compensated for, the upper strand of the pulling wire remains constantly in the same vertical plane and always remains perpendicular to the axis of the drum.
This avoids the two strands of the drive wire, aueei both winding and unwinding (the direction of which is reversed when the device is reassembled)
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
oblique traction, possible derailment cause ,, The drum 5 is thus subjected to two different movements:
1 A translational movement.
2 An accelerated rotational movement according to the law provided by the profile of the rocket.
The first movement results in an insignificant and absolutely negligible friction of the arm, leading from the cage 20, against the wall of the opening through which it passes, and along which it moves longitudinally. The second movement picked up by the cage 20 is communicated to the toothed wheel 21 which transmits it by the intermediary of the gear train 22 to the axis 23 of the wax or disc holder plate. The freewheel devices 24,25,26 make it possible, at the end of the hearing, to rewind the traction wire on the drum 5 by means of the: crank 27 through the intermediary of the pinion 28 without acting or on the disc holder plate, nor on the motor.
The rev counter
29 is intended to inform us at all times about the position of the wire in relation to the thread of the spindle and thus to allow any partial hearing of a disc produced.
It goes without saying that, the spindle being externally threaded to avoid any derailment of the traction wire, it is the bottom of this thread which is on the lateral surface of the previously defined volume.
The invention therefore relates essentially to the use of a spindle, the bottom of the groove of the groove of which is on a surface of revolution, having as its axis the axis of rotation of the spindle and as a generator a fraction of the curve:
X2Y = Constant
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
OY being the axis of rotation and OX an axis 'which' is perpendicular to it, and the constant being chosen. so as to take into account the dimensions of the drum, the speed of rotation at the beginning and the end of the useful part of the phonograph disc and the pitch of the recording. The device is driven by a spring system or electric motor acting on the axis of the rocket and giving it a uniform speed of rotation.
Of course, different mechanical devices can be used to drive the disc holder plate by means of a spindle with profile X2Y = Constant. We can for example train the dis.- 'by simply passing one or more turns' 3 of the pull wire around a drum on which it rubs. The wire after leaving the drum is wound on a second spindle identical to the first, the axes of the spindles are parallel and these spindles have the same uniform speed of rotation, - When the wire unwinds from one it is wound on the other. The devices shown in the accompanying figures have been described by way of example. It is understood that the present invention comprises the use in some way of a revolution fuze having the profile X2Y = Constant.
CLAIMS
Having thus described my invention and reserving me to make any improvements or mo-. modifications which would appear to me necessary, I claim as my exclusive and private prbperty:
