<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Enroaleur device.
GrrwW m..ws.r.rrr..r Patent application filed in Germany on June 21, 19430
The tape or wire-shaped phonogram carrier of sound recording apparatus must unwind from one reel and wind up on another reel. phonogram support required for this. effect was obtained until. present mainly by means of mechanical or electrical friction couplings or by means of brakes mounted on the drum, feeder, and exerts a notable influence on the quality of the apparatus. For example, if the phonogram holder is not wound tight enough on the coil body, the winding may not be round, giving rise to speed variations.
On the contrary, if the winding tension is too high, the drive motor is too heavily loaded (brake too tight). In addition, the mechanical brakes and couplings to. friction depend on temperature.
On the other hand, if a spring is inserted, for example a coil spring, between the two coils arranged as shown in fig.l of the accompanying drawing, given only by way of example and comprising seven figures, so as to rotate the two coils in the right direction, the winding tension does not

will be constant only when the two winding diameters are equal. As the diameter of the take-up reel increases, that of the supply reel decreases by the same amount. Since, in the tensioned phonogram carrier, the peripheral speeds of the two coils must be equal, the numbers of turns are inversely proportional to the diameter.
This therefore results in a relative movement between the two coils which tightens the tensioning spring too much or not enough. this relative movement varies as a function of the total length (total running time) of the phonogram carrier, as well as the dimensions of the reels and of the phonogram carrier.
At the start of winding (total unwinding time T 0) the controlled take-up reel A is empty and the feed reel B is full (fig.1a); coil B therefore turns a little slower than coil A. since its diameter is larger than that of this coil (spring tension). As the winding progressed, the coil B rotated faster and faster until the number of turns and the diameters of the coils were equal (the spring is relaxed.), Winding time = T (fig. 1b). The coil B. now turns faster than the coil A, since its diameter is smaller than that of this coil until at the end of the winding we obtain the same speed difference as at the beginning; the spring is tensioned again.
Winding time T (fig. 1c).
The inevitable variation in the tension of the winding can be avoided according to the invention by interposing between the spring and one of the two spools a mechanism with variable multiplication ratio, which may for example consist of a helically shaped cable pulley.
When the spring is stretched (one reel full and the other empty) the cable operates on the largest lever arm of the pulley. As the spring relaxes, the cable acts on a lever arm becoming shorter and shorter. By giving an appropriate shape to. the cable pulley, we can therefore always maintain the tension in the winding.

FIG. 2 represents an exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention shown in vertical section and in section along lines AB and CD. The spiral spring 5 is joined by its outer end with the coil 2 and by its inner end - on the side of the axis with the cable pulley 6 of helical shape. The cable 10 s follows, while the spring relaxes, from the cylindrical drum 11 and winds up on the pulley 6, the lever arm of which becomes shorter and shorter.
The tensile force on the cable therefore remains constant. The cylindrical drum 11 is linked by 1. ' intermediate: from a shaft 7 to a toothed rené 8 which meshes with a toothed wheel 9 fixed to the coil 1. The spring tension in the direction shown tends to rotate the two coils. in the opposite direction and, consequently, keeps the phonogram holder taut,
