Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  Vulcanization process and products.

   , The present invention relates to a process for the vulcanization of similar artificial masses

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 to rubber and the new products obtained by this process.

   In accordance with the present invention, artificial rubber-like masses produced by different polymerization processes from rubber-forming hydrocarbons such as butadiene (-1.3), isoprene, 2.3-dimethylbuta - diene- (1,3) or homologues and analogues thereof, are thoroughly mixed in any desired manner, e.g. by rolling, kneading, etc., prior to vulcanization, into finely divided soot or to another finely divided compound known as a filler in the rubber industry; it should be understood that the term "finely divided" is intended to include particle sizes ranging from those of carbon black to colloidal sizes.

  As the compounds mentioned above, the different varieties of soot (such as carbon black, carbon black), zinc oxide, alkaline earth oxides or alkaline earth carbonates can be mentioned by way of example. , magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, kaolin, talc, etc.

   The polymerization can be carried out by any desired method, for example by mentioned heating the mixtures of the finely divided compounds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 with the polymerizates after the addition, of a vulcanizing agent such as sulfur of compounds capable of giving sulfur by dissociation, selenium, trinitrobenzene, + metal oxides, etc., with or without addition of other compounds promoting or influencing vulcanization, at temperatures customarily applied in vulcanization processes (eg temperatures up to about 1700 C.)
Among the masses similar to rubber to be vulcanized,

  mixtures of at least two polymerization products in most cases give especially valuable results, the vulcanizates being flexible rubber products of technically high quality. These mixtures of rubber-like masses can be obtained by the most varied methods, for example by a mechanical mixing of different polymerisates by rolling or kneading or by polymerization of mixtures of hydrocarbons producing rubber, by any desired process or by polymerization of a similar hydrocarbon in the presence of an incompletely or completely polymerized artificial rubber mass, derived from another rubber-producing hydrocarbon,

   or by the polymerization of one and the same carbide gradually according to different polymerization methods,

 or by any other desired method.

   Vulcanisates obtainable from such mixtures with the addition of soot or other finely divided fillers combine good tensile strength with good elongation, especially in the case where carbon has been added. carbon black. In the latter case for example ,. Products having a tensile strength of about 150 - 275 kg / cm2 with an elongation of about 400 - 800% can generally be obtained while in the case of other finely divided fillers the corresponding figures will generally vary between about 75 - 150 kg / cm2 and 300-600%.

   The quality of rubber products is often characterized by a so-called "strength index" which is given by the product of tensile strength in kg / cm2 and elongation in percent. When this method of quality characterization is applied to the present rubber products, figures between about 50,000 and 190,000 can be obtained, while without the addition of finely divided soot or other finely divided fillers,

   one can only obtain vulcanizates with and 40,000./ the figures between 15,000 / The improvement of the new rubber articles compared to these / der-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   This therefore amounts to about 600 - 900%, while the known addition of carbon black to natural rubber produces only improvements of less than about 100%.

   It should be noted that all the figures given above, especially the proportions between tensile strength and elongation vary within the broadest limits depending not only on the starting hydrocarbons, also on the methods of polymerization and elongation. vulcanization and the kind and amount of additions made in the finely divided state, the carbon black being much superior in action to the other additions of the group mentioned6. The method of manufacture and the particle size and shape of the finely divided compounds also influence the properties of rubber products to a great extent.

   The present invention is therefore not limited to vulcanizates whose mechanical properties are strictly understood in the figures mentioned above, but. it includes all the vulcanises which can be obtained by vulcanizing mixed artificial masses similar to rubber, in the presence of finely divided soot or other finely divided products comas as fillers in industry

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 rubber.

   The amounts of soot or other finely divided fillers to be added vary within wide limits. In some cases relatively small amounts of, for example, carbon black will already give usable vulcanizates, but in most cases, especially when starting from fairly plastic rubber-like masses, amounts of between about 30 - 80% (calculated on the mass similar to rubber) will be advantageous to produce vulcanizates of high industrial value.

   It goes without saying that in addition to the finely divided compounds mentioned, other additions favoring or influencing the vulcanization operation or the quality of the vulcanisais, such as for example vulcanization accelerators, plasticizing agents such as resins, oils, etc. hydrocarbons, etc., can be added without departing from the present invention. It will frequently also be advantageous to add, in addition to the finely divided compounds, fillers having sizes of. particles larger than those defined for the expression "finely divided",
The examples below will explain the invention

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 without limiting it, the parts mentioned being parts by weight.

   Example 1: -
20 parts of colloidal silicic acid, 10 parts of zinc oxide and 10 parts of sulfur are incorporated by rolling in 100 parts of isoprene - (or erythrene) - dimethylbutadene rubber. produced from 50 parts of isoprene (or erythrene) and 50 parts of dimethylbutadene by polymerization in aqueous albumin solution and the mixture is cured at 143 ° C. for 30 minutes. The resistance index of the vulcanization products thus obtained (ie the product of the tensile strength in kg / cm2 by the elongation in percentage) is considerably higher than in the case of products vulcanization obtained from the same mixtures but without the addition of colloidal silicic acid.

   Example 2: -
About 75 parts of butadiene and about 75 parts of 1,3-dimethylbutadiene are emulsified with 150 parts of water and 15 parts of sodium stearate and polymerized at about 70 ° C. for about a week. The polymerisates thus obtained are mixed with 3 parts of sulfur, 15 parts of zinc oxide, 2 parts of tar, 2 parts of stearic acid,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   50% carbon black and 1 part diphenyl guanidine by rolling, and the mixture is vulcanized by heating for about 40 - 50 minutes at a temperature of about 135 - 140 C.

   In this way or by following other similar vulcanization methods, vulcanizates are obtained having a tensile strength of about 180-250 kg / cm2 and an elongation of about 600 -800%, while the figures corresponding values in the absence of carbon black will be 30-50 kg / cm2 and 300-500%.

   Vulcanises having similar properties are obtained when the 1,3-di-

   Example 3: -
A mixed polymerizate is prepared by heating 100 parts of butadiene at 70-75 C for about 1 month, adding 50 parts of butadiene, 7.5 parts of glue, 7.5 parts of the diacid sodium salt isobutyl-

 Naphthalene sulfonic acid and 150 parts of water and stirring the reaction mixture for about 2 weeks at a temperature of 60 - 70 C. the polymerizate thus obtained is mixed by rolling with 2 parts of sulfur, 10 parts of oxide of zinc, 3 parts stearic diacid, 2 parts of tar, 1 part of pitch, 45 parts of carbon black and 15 parts of thicarbailide, and is vulcanized in the usual manner at a temperature of about 135-140 C.

   Vulcanizates are thus obtained having a tensile strength of about 150-170 kg / cm2 with an elongation of about 500-600%. while the corresponding figure for the same vulcanisais, but without the addition of carbon black, are 30-40 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 200-300%.

   Vulcanizates having similar properties are obtained when, in this example, the butadiene is replaced by the equivalent amount of isporene.

    ¯Example 4: -
To 100 parts of butadiene is added 0.2-0.4 part of sodium thread and the mixture is polymerized for about 3 to 4 days at normal temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere, 30 parts of the polymerizate thus obtained are dissolved. in 150 parts of butadiene (if desired with the addition of a solvent

 suitable organic like turpentine, ligroine, etc. ) and the solution is emulsified with 150 parts of water and 15 parts of sodium stearate and heated to about 50 ° C for about a week with continual stirring.

   The mixed polymerizate thus obtained is mixed by rolling or kneading with 3 parts of sulfur, 15 parts of zinc oxide, 2 parts of stearic acid, 2 parts of tar, 55 parts of carbon black and 1 part of diphenylguanidine and vulcanized. in the usual manner, for example by heating to about 135-140 C.

  Vulcanizates can thus be obtained having a tensile strength of about 160 -200 kg / cm2 and an elongation of about 600-800%, while the corresponding figures without the addition of carbon black are 30 - 50 kg / cm2 and 300-400%.

   When replacing butadiene with isoprene in this example, vulcanizates having similar properties can be obtained.

   Example 5: -
100 parts of butadiene are emulsified with 15 parts of sodium stearate and 150 parts of water and are polymerized at about 65 C. Before or after the end of the polymerization operation, 100 parts of 2,3-dmethylbutadiene are added and the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 mixture is again polymerized at the same temperature with shaking or agitation.

   There is thus obtained a mixed homogeneous plastic mass analogous to rubber which, when vulcanized in the manner described in Example 4, gives, with the addition of 60% carbon black, elastic vulcanisais possessing a resistance to the traction of 175 -200 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 500-800%, while the corresponding figures without the addition of carbon black are about 30-60 kg / cm2 and about 300 -500%.

   Similar products are obtained when the butadiene is replaced by the equivalent amount of isoprene.

   Example 6: -
50 parts of dimethylbutadiene are heated to? EG until about half of the dimethylbutadiene has polymerized. To this mixture are added 100 parts of butadiene, 12 parts of sodium stearate and 100 parts of water, the mixture is allowed to emulsify and is further polymerized at about 60-70 ° C.

   The mixed polymerizate thus obtained is vulcanized with the addition of 50% carbon black, as described in Example 3, which gives vulcanises having a tensile strength of about 180-250 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 500-700%. while the numbers

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 corresponding, without the addition of carbon black, will be about 30-60 kg / cm2 and 300-500%.

    Example 7: -
100 parts of butadiene and 75 parts of dimethylbuadiene are heated at 70 ° C. for about 4-6 weeks. A homogeneous rubber-like plastic mass is thus obtained and this mass is vulcanized after addition of 55% carbon black as described in Example 3. The vulcanizate has a tensile strength of about 180. -220 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 500-800%.

   A product having similar properties is obtained when the mixture mentioned above is polymerized in the presence of water and a suitable emulsifying agent and when vulcanized as in Example 3.

   Example 8: -
50 parts of a dimethylbuadiene rubber obtained by polymerizing 2,3-dimerhylbutadiene at about 70-750C, and 50 parts of an isoprene rubber obtained by polymerizing isoprene emulsified with equal parts of water and about 10% of the sodium salt of castor oil sulfonic acid (Turkish red oil) is mixed by rolling or kneading. The mixture thus obtained is vulcanized in any loose manner after the addition of 50% black

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 of carbon, and vulanizates having a tensile strength of 150-175 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 500-650% are obtained.

   Example 9: -
About 15 parts of a butadiene rubber obtained by the polymerization of butadiene emulsified with equal parts of water, 5% sodium stearate
 EMI13.1
 and 7.5% of the sodium salt of isobatylnaphthalene sulfonic acid and by heating the emulsion to about 100 parts of butadiene and / 30-40 C, are introduced into a mixture of / 100 parts of ligroin; 0.75 parts of sodium wire are added and further polymerization is carried out by heating to a temperature of about 15-35 C.

   When this polymerizate is vulcanized with the addition of 60% carbon black as described in Example 3, elastic vulcanizates are obtained having a tensile strength of 150-200 kg / cm2 with an elongation of 600 -800%.

   Example 10: -
70 parts of butadiene are emulsified with 100 parts of a 10% aqueous solution of sodium oleate, 3 parts of magnesium oleate and 5 parts of normal caustic soda lye; the emulsion is homogenized and the polymerization is carried out by heating to about 60 ° C. for about two days.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

  The rubber-like mass thus obtained is mixed by rolling with 30 parts of a butadiene rubber obtained by stirring butadiene in the presence of 0.2% sodium wire at room temperature for about 3 days. To this mixed polymerizate are added 60% of carbon black, 15% of zinc oxide, 2% of stearic acid, 2% of rosin, 1% of sulfur and 1.3% of tetrahydroquinaldine dithiovarbamate and the vulcanization is carried out. carried out by heating to about 135-140 ° C. This gives a vulcanizate having a tensile strength of about 170-200 kg / cm2 with an elongation of about 600-700%.

   This is in part a continuation of a patent application No. 281587 filed May 29, 1928.
