 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  "Improvements to processes for carrying out reactions between gases".

   The satisfactory performance of reactions between gases, more especially those which take place in the presence of contacts, is often only possible between very close temperature and pressure limits and, in order to maintain these limits, the means currently used for control temperature and for the constitution of the mixture are usually not sufficient.

   It has already been proposed, for reactions by contact, which are highly exothermic and sensitive to temperature, to derive the heat by adding inert gases, which can be removed with the final gas. This addition, however, causes the dilution of the reaction gases and the filling of the reaction mixture, in absorbers, towers, condensers or the like, is made difficult.

   In accordance with the invention these difficulties are avoided by mixing with the fresh gas substances such as substances or the final products which result therefrom which can be separated from the gas mixture before it undergoes.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 another treatment. Substances which can be easily removed are, for example, water vapor and carbonic acid, which can easily be condensed or absorbed after passing the reaction phase.

   When carrying out reactions for which additional heating is desired, it is possible, for example, in contact reactions to replace the water vapor with hydrogen which, with evolution of heat, burns off, in contact reactions. presence of the contacts, to give water which is condensed before absorption and which no longer dilutes the gases during subsequent treatment. In the same way, it is possible, in certain cases, where a use of carbonic acid as an additive substance would be possible, to have recourse to carbon monoxide which, by providing heat, burns to give carbonic acid which can then be separated from the gas mixture.

   One can also use, for example, SO2 which can be separated, either as such, or in the form of SO3 or H2SO4-
An outstanding example for the application of the invention is the combustion of ammonia to give nitrous gases. Thus, for example, it is possible to burn ammonia with pure oxygen directly in the form of highly concentrated nitric acid, condensing in such a way, in special refrigerants, the added water vapor, that is to say after the combustion equipment and possibly after passing through a boiler, so that dilute nitric acid cannot form. In this way it is possible, at the same time, to separate the water contained in the reaction product and which results from the combustion.

  This water, as well as the added water vapor, is also removed when one adds to the fresh gas SO2 which is recovered, after contact, in the form of sulfuric acid, so that the nitrous gases, being strongly cleared @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 some water. can then be processed as desired.

  The sulfuric acid can then be separated to a desired concentration (dilute, concentrated or fuming), for example at 60%.

   The process according to the invention can be carried out with any type of refrigerant and at any desired pressure. To carry out the gas reactions, for which the vapors formed during the reaction or added to the gas mixture before the reaction are condensed before further processing of the gas mixture, the following new method has been found to be particularly effective.

   Heretofore, it has generally been cooled to below the dew point to separate, by refrigeration, one of the constituents of the gas mixtures. Condensation and misting then occurs in the gas chamber which can make it difficult to separate the liquid or solid constituents.

   In addition, the entire mass of gases must be cooled until the moment when the component to be separated can no longer exist in this mass in gaseous form. This occurs, for example, in the case of a condensation tower, the outlet temperature of which regulates the composition of the evacuated man-made mixture. When, instead of a tower for fractional condensation, rectification, dephlegmation or metallic refrigerants, the aforesaid feature more or less intervenes.

   The improvement in separation provided by the present invention is based on the following findings.

   Cold surfaces become covered, in certain ciraon- stances, with a condensate when a gaseous mixture licks this surface, this condensate being formed by gaseous particles which touch this surface without the temperature of this mixture being lowered even up to to be close to the dew point. By using this feature one can produce in the gas mixture a partial pressure drop such towards the re-surface.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 refrigerant, that the constituents to be separated are / are deposited, in the solid or liquid state, on this surface, while the gas mixture which leaves the refrigerant, is unsaturated with regard to the separated constituents.

   If one wants to condense, for example, 3/4 of the water content, at a pressure of 1 atm., Of a mixture of air and 11.2% by volume of water vapor, heated x to 500 C which corresponds to condensation equal to 48 C., the temperature of the gas mixture at the outlet of the condenser can be higher than 48 0 and be, for example, 80 C when the partial pressure drop is, at the beginning , for example, 0.2 atm / cm 2, this pressure being consequently less after the separation of 3/4 of the total quantity of water vapor. In this simplest case, given simply by way of example, aluminum tubes with an internal diameter of 10 m / m and a length of one meter can be used in particular, these tubes being cooled with water at 2 C circulating in counter-current.

   Such a condenser would give, assuming that the condensate flows along the cooling surface in the same direction as the gas current, 8 liters of liquid water per hour and per m of cooling surface, while the gaseous mixture which s 'escapes and whose dew point is 22.5 C still has a temperature of 80 C. This mixture therefore remains lcin from the initial dew point which is 48 C.

   For a higher water vapor content for the gas mixture entering or leaving the condenser, it is optionally possible, for example, to use larger, conical or different length tubes or else cooling plates. For a lower water vapor content, for example, lower temperatures can be used for the cooling surfaces. Condensate and water

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 cooling units can, in certain particular cases, be displaced without contrary with respect to the gas stream or transversely with respect to the latter and the refrigerating surfaces can also be constituted by the cooled condensate or by a refrigerant liquid.

   All the indications relating to temperatures and other operating peculiarities therefore only count, for what is said above or below, for the example considered. In each particular case, these values are modified accordingly.

   The advantage resulting from the method according to the invention lies, first of all, in a noticeable reduction in the cooling surface used. Another advantage in many cases is that less heat has to be transferred to the cooling walls. Apparatuses which serve to separate the condensate obtained to gain volatile constituents, to recover solvents, to fractionation to rectification or the like can be used.

   The process is of paramount importance in the event of chemical reactions taking place, in the event of chemical equilibria being formed, because these processes are mainly influenced by temperature. This method makes it possible, for example, by starting with mixtures of hot nitrogen oxides and containing water such as obtained for example by the combustion of ammonia to separate a condensate containing neither acid nor - hard or low in nitric acid, avoiding low temperatures for the whole gas mixture, which was not possible by any other method.

   From what is said above, this operation is achieved with a minimum of cooling surface. Very often it is above all advantageous to remove the condensate formed, as soon as it leaves the cooling surface, from any additional action on the part of the gas stream to avoid, for example, a new

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 vaporization, unwanted chemical reaction, or other effect. This takes place, for example, by deflecting the gas stream or partial streams by an angle of 90 or 1800, for example, or by subjecting it to a rotation.

   It is also possible to insert, one in the other, two tubes possibly with conical ends or of different diameter and to pass the gas stream in a straight line and without loss of pressure in the narrowest tube while the condensate flows, of even, along the wall of the widest tube. Good results are also obtained by causing the condensate to flow transversely to the gas stream or by passing the gas externally in contact with cooling fins. When deemed favorable, the separation can also be accomplished by mechanical means.

   An exemplary embodiment resides, for example, in a refrigerant with metal tubes which, by the process according to the invention, separates an aqueous condensate from the hot nitrogen oxides at 2000 C. This is the temperature of the nitrogen oxides resulting from the combustion of ammonia, when their heat is used in the steam boiler, is mounted, for example and advantageously, the ammonia combustion apparatus, the boiler and the refrigerant, involved in carrying out the present process , directly one after the other.

   For a cooling surface of 5 m2 / t of burnt ammonia, a separation of 3/4 of the water of reaction and 9% by volume of the nitrogen oxides is obtained with a nitric acid content so low that they can be used. Readjust for the final absorption of nitrogen oxides, while the nitrogen oxides themselves enter the production apparatus well cooled and without loss of concentration. In this case, 1/2 to 2/3 of the acid-resistant cooling surface or a multiple of this surface is saved in the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 case where the installation did not include, before, a refrigerant for the gases. For a given condensation chamber one can obtain a more concentrated acid or one can adopt a smaller condensation chamber. Any alkaline absorption can also be excluded or reduced.

   This can also be done when the air used is enriched with oxygen or hydrogen, so that new and not previously applied methods are obtained.

   If we mount, for example, directly one behind the other, an apparatus for the combustion of ammonia and a condensate separator operating according to the process object of the invention, it is possible, even in the case where the mixture contains 30% by volume of oxygen, separate half of the water of reaction with less than 1 gr. N / I nitric acid for a cooling surface of only 5 m2 / t NH3. At the same time the gases are cooled, for example to 70 C or 80 C. For ordinary cooling, below the dew point, it is necessary to use if the outgoing gas is substantially saturated, a surface three times larger for the same effect . On the other hand, we obtain not the condensate which is poor in nitric acid and as desired, but rather a dilute nitric acid which can serve neither for the final absorption nor as a user acid.

   If one works with mixtures rich in oxygen and highly concentrated gases, the application of the process according to the invention allows a notable increase in the condentration which can be obtained for the acid and simultaneously, a significant reduction in the cooling surface. This occurs, in particular, for all the processes for which water vapor is present in the fresh gas. If one works, for example, with gases containing 20% by volume of ammonia and air treated according to Linde and containing about 60% by volume of oxygen, as the applicants have proposed in an application Previously, it is possible, by applying the above method, to obtain a yield of more than 95% of acid at 40 Bé.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   If one works, for example, with oxygen by, one can obtain tetraoxide, in gaseous or liquid form, which can be transformed into highly concentrated nitric acid without having recourse to condensation according to the old methods with Tours. runoff, pumps, risers and fans.

   Example: If one burns, more particularly, a mixture of 1 volume of NH3 with 1.5 to 2.5 volumes of undiluted oxygen, for example, depending on the demand referred to above, one achieves , using the present process, to condense the greater part of the water resulting from the combustion and that added to the fresh gas as well as the water vapor released from the liquid layer, this water being poor in nitrogen. The condensation takes place before the gas mixture is converted into highly concentrated nitric acid or liquid nitrogen tetraoxide. The gas mixture leaves the refrigerant at a temperature above 100 ° C., for example at 1100 ° C. or at 190 ° C. The temperature of the leaving gas mixture is therefore above the boiling point of the separated component.

   Without the present process it would not be possible to obtain, starting from mixtures of nitrogen oxides containing such a high percentage of oxygen, a low nitrogen condensate.

   Another example for the application of the process is the separation, for example, of water, ammonium salts and hydrocyanic acid from gas mixtures containing ammonia and as occurs in particular during the synthesis of hydrocyanic acid, starting with ammonia and carbon monoxide or for the constitution of cyanamide. The gaseous mixture treated according to the invention can be returned to the process in order to undergo further decomposition.
