 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  A process for separating gases of an acidic nature from other gases or from gas mixtures.

   The present invention relates to the separation of gases of an acidic nature, such as carbonic acid, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, etc .; other gases or gas mixtures, by means of an absorbent agent.

   The process may be employed for the separation and recovery of these gases of an acidic nature from the mixture or may be employed for the purification of other gases by removing the acid gases therefrom. the main object of the present invention is to facilitate the separation, to effect complete or nearly complete removal or recovery of these acid gases, to facilitate the reactivation of the absorbent / and to increase the speed of this. reactivation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   It has been found that there are many advantages in employing as an absorbing agent an organic nitrogenous base and more especially organic nitrogenous bases the carbonates of which are dissolved by the application of heat. Among the organic nitrogenous bases, it is advantageous to employ a compound of sub-

 ammonia substitution, and more particu7i: ¯ enent a 1J product of ammonia substitution of alcohols.

   Triethanolamine is preferably filled in, while other compounds such as diethyl-
 EMI2.2
 amine, i 'eth yi ain e, 1 a phenylhydraine, 7 a dihydroxypropy] amine, nicotine, hydrazine hydrate, diétbylaminoethyl alcohol, piperidylethanol and other products can be used: with advantage.

   Triethanolamine can be used in the pure state as a viscous liquid, or in solution for example in water. It has been found that this compound is easy to handle, is of low volatility so that there is the minimum loss during absorption or reactivation, that it can be employed in ordinary atmospheric conditions for this purpose. which concerns pressure and temperature, whether it produces a complete removal or complete recovery of carbonic acid, sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide or other gases of an acidic nature, which it possesses a high viscosity which leads to a higher rate of absorption,

  that it can be reactivated at a relatively high rate with minimal loss in vapor temperature and yields during reactivation all or substantially all of the gas or gases absorbed. The compound is not caustic and therefore not harmful to use and can be used in ordinary material installations. The gas is removed by a real chemical combination and the reactivation reproduces the compound in its original form and composition.

   The process can be carried out in different types of apparatus and on an intermittent or continuous basis. In the accompanying drawing, the single figure shows schematically a vertical section in one form of apparatus which may be employed for continuous operation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   In this apparatus, an absorber 10 is used which is preferably in the form of a column of suitable height and provided with baffles, rollers or other suitable fillings to produce a reduced flow rate and contact. efficiency of falling liquid and rising gas. Inside the absorber is the absorbent agent, preferably triethanolamine in aqueous solution. The absorbent agent is continuously delivered to the top of the absorber through a pipe II, while the gas to be treated is sent to the lower part of the absorber through a pipe 12. The stripped gas is withdrawn from the. top of the column via a pipe 13 while the absorbent, with the gases absorbed, is extracted from the bottom via a pipe 14.

     In combination with the absorber, a reactivator 15 is employed which is also in the form of a wrapped column.

  The absorbent containing the absorbed gas is led from pipe 14 through pipe 16 to the top of the reactivator by means of a pump 17.

  At the base of the reactivator is a heating means, such as for example a steam coil 18. The gas expelled from the absorbent in the reactivator is withdrawn from the top of the reactivator through a pipe 19 while a pump 20. extracts the reactivated absorbent by means of a pipe 21 starting from the bottom of the reactivator and discharges it into the pipe II which ends at the top of the absorber. It is necessary that the temperature in the reactivator be higher than in the absorber. It is therefore desirable to heat the liquid delivered by the pipe 16 and to cool the liquid delivered by the pipe II. This can be achieved by any suitable form of heat exchanger.

  To simplify the drawing, there is shown the pipe 16 provided with a reheater 22 and the pipe II provided with a refrigerant 23.

   To carry out the operation, the gas to be treated is sent to the pipe 12 and rises through the absorber. Carbonic acid, sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide is removed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 by the action of triethanolamine and the freed gas exits through pipe 13. The triethanolamine with the gas absorbed is removed through pipe 14, heated by reheater 22 and sent to the top of the reactivator. In the latter apparatus, the liquid descends to the bottom and gives up the absorbed gas which then escapes through the pipe 19. The last parts of the absorbed gas are eliminated by the heating coil 18 and the reactivated absorbent is cooled in refrigerant 23 and returned for reuse in the absorber. The operation is thus continuous.

   The improved process can be used to treat a wide variety of gases. By way of simple examples, the flue gases can be treated for the recovery of the carbon dioxide contained therein, or the gases from roasting furnaces can be treated for the recovery of sulfur dioxide. In both cases, the treatment is carried out for the recovery of valuable constituents of the waste gas.

   On the other hand, the process can be used to treat natural gas, town gas, water gas or hydrogen, with a view to removing carbonic acid, sulfur dioxide or other gases of an acidic nature, in order to purify the treated gases and to make them more suitable for the applications for which they are to be employed.

   Carbonic acid can be extracted from natural gas in preparation for extracting helium from the latter, or carbonic acid can be extracted from the air in preparation for liquefying and extracting the latter. oxygen.

   When hydrogen is produced from coke, this hydrogen can be treated to remove hydrogen sulfide which is often present in appreciable amounts and constitutes a very unpleasant impurity of hydrogen,
The dimensions and capacity of the apparatus, as well as the nature of the means employed to effect absorption and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 The reactivation can vary within relatively wide limits, depending on the characteristics and volume of the gas being treated and the percentage of component which must be removed. With triethanolamine as the absorbent, water vapor serves as a suitable heating agent in both heating coil 18 and heater 22, while water at room temperature may be employed in the heater. the refrigerant 23.

   In some cases and especially with other ammonia substitutes of alcohols, it may be desirable to heat to a higher temperature by means of superheated steam and to cool to a lower temperature by the action of brine. . With triethanolamine no overheating or overcooling is required.

   As a result of the high rate of absorption and the high rate of reactivation, the absorber and reactivator columns can be made much shorter than is possible when other materials are employed as absorbents. like alkalis or carbonates. Complete reactivation can be obtained without vigorous boiling or blowing with air, as is currently being re-tested with certain absorbents. By the expression "gas of an" acid "nature is meant gases which, when dissolved in water, form an acid or which have an acid reaction.
