<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO TIRE VALVES AND DEVICES TO ENSURE THEIR HERMETICITZ"
This invention relates to an improved device for securing the airtightness of pneumatic valves and established for its application to. standardized and very different types of valve, such that it prevents air from escaping through the valve, through the valve hole in the metal rim or through any defect in the valve, and that the valve and its accessories are made completely hermetic.
One of the characteristics of the invention consists in establishing a sealing device which entirely envelops the normal valves provided with a straight rod and which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
prevents air leakage through the valve itself or through the valve hole in the metal rim of the tire.
The invention is also applicable to valves with an angled stem, to so-called "S" valves intended for balloon type tires and having a double bend and to all other types of pneumatic lice valves liable to leak. .
In general, the invention consists in establishing a device which prevents the air from escaping by passing through and (or) from one side to the other of the valves employed on the valves. tires and through the valve hole forms in the metal rim of tires, or which prevents air from escaping from any type of valve when the pressure of a trapped volume of air needs to be effectively maintained for a long time of time.
In the case of a tire provided with a straight-stem valve, the straight stem is completely enveloped by the device according to the invention which comprises a cap

metal of a pieoe ghoul, a Qombn1QQn 42vçq a special xop- delle or tubular rubber seal. The metal bonnet is established to thread onto the threads of current normal valves and has an open base of large diameter and suitably tapered or recessed to fit on the special washer which has two open ends and is suitably tapered, as such. so that the single opening or orifice of the metal cap fits exactly and tightly on this washer.
One side of the washer is set to fit exactly against the metal rim of the tire and is wide enough to wrap around the hole tightly which holds the normal valve in position on a metal tire rim and to fit exactly around this nut, La rendelle

is robust and it is practically impassible that it is destroyed, damaged or forced when, in use, it is compressed hermetically against the various metallic surfaces which surround it, which distinguishes it from the rubber parts of the normal valves current, which organs can easily be damaged.
When the cap according to the invention is fitted exactly over the special washer according to the invention, the airtightness is ensured by the pressure of said cap on this washer. In the case of a straight stem valve, the washer is pressed tightly against the valve safety nut, around this nut, against the internal conference of the conical orifice of the bonnet and against the threaded stem. of the valve itself. To make it impossible to leak from one side of this washer to the other, it is therefore sufficient to simply screw the cap onto the thread of a normal air valve proper.
In the application of the present sealing device to the end of an angled valve stem or to the end of an S-valve stem, this device is attached to the end of the valve. bent rod by adapting to the threaded part of the existing rod (this threaded part being extended if necessary), a conical nut suitably threaded which is screwed fully onto the end of the threaded part. tee of the stem, the hermeticity being ensured, for example, by white lead.
A special washer according to the invention is fitted exactly against this conical nut, which washer is provided, in this case, with two conical ends instead of just one, and is screwed onto the threaded rod until one of the tapered sides rests and fits snugly against the screwed conical nut fully and within the cavity of that nut. We then screw the metal hat-

lique bases on the normal thread which presents' the end of the angled valve, which ensures the hermeticity of the seals -between the special washer and the metal surfaces on which it rests.
In order to increase the hermeticity of the device and to establish a kind of "seal", the special rubber washer can be immersed in a rubber solution or the like before fitting this washer. Any other -mechanical or well-known means can moreover be applied to effectively lock the metal cap so that it cannot turn for a long period of time.
The metal cap according to the invention is also provided, when necessary, with an end or appendage suitable groove its outer end to allow screwing or unscrewing what is called the. valve proper, which eliminates the troubles which are often experienced today as a result of the rupture of the rubber member provided inside the normal valve caps.

current problems, which rupture g & nQ 3-a màRo an t2aar oorreq- the valve itself and often causes leaks of the normal valve, a serious drawback which the present invention obviates.
To make the invention better understood and to facilitate its practice, it will be described below in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a valve of the straight type, normal subject to an air chamber and on which is mounted the sealing device according to the invention, which is screwed fully into the correct position of said valve.

Fig. 5 is a plan of the washer of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 shows the conical cup nut fully screwed onto the thread of a normal valve stem over the special rubber washer.
Fig. 7 shows another form of special washer which is provided with two conical sides instead of just one, this washer being applied to the end of an elbow valve in combination with the metal cap of fig. 3.
Fig. , 8 shows separately the metal cap of the device of FIG. 3.
Fig. 9 shows separately the conical nut which is fitted on the threaded end of a bent valve stem and becomes a permanent accessory of this stem, this nut being sealed with the aid of white lead, for example, when screwed in fully.
When mounted on a straight stem valve, the cap according to the invention is designated 1-in-the? various figures and the special washer or tubular rubber seal is designated by (fig. 1 and 2). In fig.
1, the cap 1 and the washer 2 are shown in the assembly position in which they establish a hermetic seal on a normal valve stem 3,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In fig. 2, the same cap 1 is shown separately. This figure shows one of the embodiments of the washer 2 in position on the nut 4 fixing the valve stem. When desirable, this washer may have been immersed in a solution of liquid rubber before being mounted on the nut 4. In this case, when the cap 1 is fully screwed in, this cap becomes effective. -

hermetically sealed or fixed hermetically to the washer 2 and can only rotate when the "seal" is deliberately broken.
Fig. 3 shows, at 1A, another construction of the cap according to the invention and, at 2A, another construction of the rubber washer, which is tapered on each side. These members are mounted at the end of an angled valve stem 3A and ensure the airtightness of the valve, even if the latter were forced. The metal cap 1A is shown separately in fig. 8, and the rubber washer 2A is shown separately in fig. 7.
When an elbow valve is used and it is necessary to ensure the hermeticity of the valve hole of the retaining rim of the tire, this is easily obtained by fitting a washer 2 such as that of FIGS. . 1 and 2 on the fixing nut 4A of the valve and applying a 4 nut to. conical cup-µ., as shown in fig. 6.
When this nut is fully screwed in, it hermetically seals the valve hole of the metal rim and if the rubber washer has been dipped in a rubber solution before assembly, a kind of seal is obtained.

, Fig. 9 shows separately a conical nut 6 which is mounted on the threaded rod LA as previously described. This nut is shown in position on the end of the rod 3A in FIG. 3.
A straight stem valve and a bent stem valve have been shown and the applicator has been described in detail. of the invention to these types, but it is obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the constructions shown and that various secondary modifications can be made to the details described and shown without departing from the spirit of invention.
The metal cap and rubber washer according to the invention as well as all the necessary accessories, as previously described, can all be made in suitable shapes and sizes and made of suitable materials.
