<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Afin de rendre ce résultat encore plus sur et d'augmenter la rapidité du changement d'engrenages on peut aménager un frein léger relié à l'accélérateur et agissant sur les organes du mécanime à vitesse variable de façon que, lorsqu'on relaxe l'accélérateur;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

@ Etant donné le sens dans lequel les ressorts sont respec- tivement enroules, cette rotation partielle de leurs extré- mités attachées aux bras 76x, 77x, les. obligent à serrer sur le tambour 69 par ses faces interne et externe;

The present invention relates to improvements to motive power transmission systems and is more particularly applicable to the transmission systems of motor vehicles.
In transmission systems comprising variable speed mechanisms, it is often necessary to perform the gear changing operation without stopping the primary motor or the driven mechanism.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify this gear changing operation by isolating the variable speed mechanism from the main motor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and the driven mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to make starting up smooth and progressive, more especially when the driven mechanism starts from the state of rest, the primary motor being in motion, and this without the need for skill. special from the driver.
Having regard to the object of the invention, there is an advantage, in the case of motor vehicles, in eliminating the brake pedal employed hitherto, which simplifies maneuvers for the driver.
Another object of the invention is to allow the driven mechanism to continue to rotate freely. For example, when a motor vehicle descends a slope, at reduced engine power, this arrangement will prevent the load wheels from driving the engine, which saves fuel. At the same time it is desirable in certain circumstances to be able to use the motor as a brake acting on the wheels, and it is also one of the objects of the present invention to provide the means of accomplishing this. these two functions without having to employ a separate actuator.
The subject of the invention is also the means serving to achieve all the objects previously indicated with a minimum of disturbance in the constructive arrangement of the force transmission systems of known types and by increasing their cost price and their complexity as little as possible. .
The present invention relates firstly to a force transmission system comprising a primary motor, a variable speed mechanism and two transmission interrupt devices one.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
either of these or both comprising a servo motor driven friction clutch taking its force from the primary motor and using that force to engage the friction clutch.
The two transmission interruption members are arranged on either side of the variable speed mechanism, that is to say one between the primary motor and the variable speed mechanism and the other between the variable speed mechanism and the mechanism. driven, or, in the case of a motor vehicle, between the variable speed mechanism and the load wheels.
The servo motor can be controlled by means of the primary engine speed control member or vehicle engine (member hereinafter referred to as the accelerator) so that the first movement of the accelerator in the direction of acceleration of the motor activates the servomotor; the servomotor then drives the friction clutch in a smooth and progressive manner without involving the driver's skill in maneuvering, The subsequent movement of the accelerator accelerates the operation of the engine.
The backward movement of the accelerator starts by de-accelerating the motor until it has reached a determined minimum speed or dead speed and the following movement backward of the accelerator puts the servomotor in action, this which allows the friction clutch to disengage. A spring system is provided for this purpose.
It will be seen that partial return of the accelerator reduces engine speed without disengaging the clutch. which allows the motor to be used as a brake,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
while letting go of the throttle completely, the clutch is disengaged and the 4000-carrier wheels or driven mechanism are allowed to continue to rotate freely independent of the engine.
The second transmission interruption member may auasi be a clutch. 4 friction actuated by a servo motor and released by a system of springs or vice versa; it can include a simple clutch controlled directly by the accelerator without the intervention of a servomotor.
According to another variant, the second transmission interruption member may comprise a freewheel system capable of transmitting rotary motion in one direction only. In a motor vehicle this will normally be the forward direction which automatically allows the load wheels to turn freely independently of the engine when the speed of the latter is reduced.
It will be seen that, with the second transmission interruption system, arranged according to any one of the preceding modes and with the first transmission interruption member arranged and governed by a servo-motor: as it has been explained above ,,. the variable speed mechanism will be effectively isolated when the throttle is fully relaxed and an easy and quiet gear change can be achieved ..,
In order to make this result even safer and to increase the speed of the gear change, a light brake can be fitted, connected to the accelerator and acting on the parts of the mechanism at variable speed so that, when the engine is relaxed. accelerator;
the components of the variable speed mechanism, which otherwise would continue to rotate, under the effect of their inertia, are immediately brought to rest.
By applying the invention to a certain
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
mode of execution of the servomotor, the engagement of one or more friction clutches can take place in such a way that, after the servomotor has been put into action, the clutch is fully moved / engaged when the engine made a determined number of revolutions. If desired, the connection between the servomotor and the clutch can comprise an adjustable member by means of which the determined number of revolutions can be varied to suit the speed of the engine or the force to be transmitted.
According to another peculiarity of this mode of construction, the servo motor can take the form of a separate element, directly attached to the primary motor and actuating the clutch by means of an external lever which replaces the pedal. usual clutch. In this form. the servo motor can be adapted to a motor vehicle without changing the internal arrangement of the existing clutch.
According to another feature of this embodiment, a neutral focusing member has been provided by means of which, when the clutch is fully engaged, the servomotor is removed from all loads other than that of light springs. reminder.
In another embodiment, the servo-motor is carried by the clutch itself of which it forms part. A particular feature of this arrangement is that the engagement of the clutch members is proportional to the speed difference between the conductive member and the driven member.
One embodiment of the servo motor for engaging a friction clutch may include hydraulic pumps and pistons; the pumps send water to the pistons and the force to operate the pumps is taken from the primary motor or vehicle engine. A
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
adjustable bypass valve is interposed between the pumps and the pistons; it allows the fluid to be directed towards the pistons or to divert it without it having exerted any action.
In order that the present invention and the manner in which it can be applied be better understood, it has been described in three embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings:
In these, Fig. 1 is a schematic view of part of a motor vehicle according to the present invention: it shows the general arrangement of an embodiment in which a servomotor controlling the motor. clutch is directly actuated by the primary motor.

primary motor vehicle driver; 2, a box containing a friction clutch of the known type, which is engaged by springs (not shown) and released by means of the lever 7. Box 2 also contains a controlled variable speed mechanism, according to the known mode, by the lever 8. To the gearbox 2 is fixed a casing 3 containing the freewheel system, a claw clutch and a clutch brake shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8.
5 is a reinforcement tube containing a shaft (not shown) which transmits force to the load wheels. A servo motor 4 is included in the motor mechanism 1 and is mechanically connected to the lever 7 for controlling the clutch by via a lever 14 and a rod 15; 6 is an acceleration pedal mechanically connected to a throttle valve 9 of the engine and, by a rod 10, and a lever 11, articulated at 12 to a valve stem 13 of the servo-motor 4 (see also figure 4). A tension spring 16 attached at 17 to the vehicle frame is attached to the lever 7 which, on the other hand, is connected by a rod 18 and a system of bent levers and rods 19, to a clutch brake housed in box 3 (see also figures 6,7 and 8).
A separate lever 20 is attached to a shaft 21 which passes through the box 3 and which actuates the claw clutch for the reverse movement (see Figures 6, 7 and 8).
In figures 2, 3, 4 and 5, 22 is a box fixed to the motor by means of a flange 23 and in which is mounted a pair 24.25 of straight reduction gears, controlled by the motor and controlling, by through an eccentric 26 and a combined part 27 forming an eccentric and a connecting rod, a piston 28.
The space under the piston 28 is connected, through the conduit '29, to a check valve 38. A control valve comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
a chamber 35 and a piston 36 which carries a rod 13, projecting outwardly (see also figure 1) communicating, via a duct 31, with the interior of the box 22 and, via the duct 33, with a cylinder 34. The control valve also communicates with the check valve 38, which is maintained in permanent communication with the conduit 31 by the conduit 37 pierced eccentrically. In the cylinder 34 move in friction a piston 39 and a disc 40 constantly applied to the piston 39 by a spring 41.
The part 40 carries a pin 42 slidably mounted in Guide grooves 43 made in the walls of the cylinder and carrying rollers 44 which bear against levers 45, forming a cam, keyed on a shaft 45 on which the outer lever, 14 is also keyed (see also figure I)
In Figures 6, 7, and 8, we see that the box 3 (see also Figure 2) contains a sleeve 48 which slides with grooves on the shaft 47 and transmits the movement of the variable speed mechanism. To the sleeve 48 is fixed a flanged drum 49 to which is attached at 50 a spiral spring 51. The latter surrounds a drum 52 on which it can clamp; this drum is fixed to a flange 53x which is integral with a driven shaft 53.
The drum 52 is provided with a flange 54 which has wedge-shaped notches at its periphery, and which is surrounded by a ring 55 to which is attached at 55x the free end of the spring 51. In the notches of the flange 54 and between the latter. and the ring 55, are housed rolling members 56 maintained in contact with the ring 55 and the inclined ends of the notches of the flange 54 by the spring pistons 57.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The flanged drum 49 is surrounded by a brake band 58 placed under the action of a spring 59 which normally keeps it away from the drum; this band is clamped by the part 60, which is actuated by the cam 61 which constitutes one of the arms of the lever. 62 which is attached, by its other arm, to the system of bent levers and rods 19 (see figure I). One of the. ends of the sleeve 48 carries the claws 63 which are arranged so as to engage with the claws 64 which slide in the direction of the axis in the grooves 65 made in the flange 53x and under the action of a grooved ring 66 and a fork 67 articulated on a shaft 21 on which the external lever 20 is keyed (see FIG. 1).
The operating mode is as follows:
In Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5, the box 22 of the servomotor 4 is kept full of oil at a level sufficient to flood all the working parts. The rotation of the motor gives a continuous reciprocating motion to the piston 28 via the right reduction gears 24, 25 and the eccentric member 26, 27.
The oil comes from inside the box 22 through the conduits 31, 37, the check valve 38 and the conduit 29. In the return stroke of the piston, the oil is delivered through the conduit 30, the check valve 32 and the conduits 33, towards the cylinder 34 and the adjustment valve. Normally the regulating valve is in a position which allows the oil to return through line 33 to line 31; The oil is thus diverted without it having accomplished any work.
Returning to FIG. I, it can be seen that the first lowering movement of the accelerator 6, acting through the intermediary of the rod IO and the lever II, pushes the rod 13 of the valve outwards. adjustment. The movement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
piston 36 of the regulating valve intercepts the communication between the conduits 31 and 33 (the regulating valve is shown in this position in FIG. 4).
All the oil is then sent into the cylinder 34 by pushing. thus the piston 39 and the part 40 upwards against the action of the spring 41. The pins 42 being portJs towards the. top by part 40 and uniting through the intermediary. rollers 44 oscillate the levers 45, the shaft 46 and the external lever 14. As the cylinder 34 is in direct communication with the piston 28, without the intervention of any oil accumulator system, and that the oil is practically incompressible, the stroke of the piston 39 and therefore that of the lever 14, directly depend on the number of strokes made by the piston 28.
The lever 14 acting through the rod 15 and the clutch control lever 7 overcomes the force of the springs 16 which act to release the clutch and allows the clutch to be engaged by the clutch. action of its own springs.
The cam parts of the levers 45 are contoured such that when the hydraulic piston 39 has arrived. at the end of the stroke and the clutch is fully engaged, the pressure between the forint cam faces and the rollers is directed at an angle aroit on the angle of the hydraulic piston 39, thus subtracting this piston at any load directed along the axis other than that of the springs 41, the lateral loads being exerted on the cylinder wall by the disc 40 without being transmitted to the hydraulic piston.
The engagement of the clutch transmits the movement to the vaiable speed mechanism and, thereby, to the freewheel system shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8. In these figures, the movement is transmitted, by the shaft 47, to sleeve 48 and @@@ t @@@ bour 49, in the direction

This rotation is communicated to the end 50 of the spiral spring 51, the other end of which is. 55x, attached to ring 55, is retained by the jamming effect of the rollers. 56 when the. rotation tends to take place in this sena, the shaft 53 being stationary. The rotation of the end 50 of the spiral spring 51, the other end 55x being held stationary, forces the spiral spring 51 to clamp on the drum. 53. Consequently, the

At the same time, the return movement of the lever 7, .acting by the in-

acting, in turn :, via the cane 61 and. the room. 60, tightens a brake band 58 thereby bringing the drum 49, the sleeve 48 and the shaft 47 to rest.
Thus, whenever the main clutch is released, the members of the variable-speed mechanism are put to rest,
Figures 9, 10, II and 12 show a rear clutch different from that shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8.
In figures 9, 10, II and 13, it can be seen that, in a box 3, is mounted on a shaft 47 transmitting the movement of the variable speed mechanism, a sleeve

The other ends of the coil springs 74, 75, are respectively attached to the sleeves 76, 77, by the arms 76x, 77x.
On the shaft 70 is mounted a sliding sleeve 78 which carries a block and a journal bearing 79 on which acts a fork 80 actuated by means of a system, rods and bent levers not shown, for example. accelerator 6 (see figure I). The sleeve 78 is fixed. an appendix. with cam profile 81 which bears on the fa.- ces. 76a, 7% of arms 76x, 77x. This mechanism works as follows.
When the accelerator 6 (figure I) is lowered, the appendage-cam 81 is brought inwards (i.e.

that is to say towards the shaft 47) thus separating the faces 76a 77a, and by imparting a partial rotation.,. in opposite directions, arms 76x, 7%, and sleeves 76, 77.
@ Given the direction in which the springs are wound respectively, this partial rotation of their ends attached to the arms 76x, 77x, the. require clamping on the drum 69 by its internal and external faces;
in this way the movement is transmitted from the shaft 4?,: Through the sleeve 68 and the drum 69, through one or the other of the coil springs. 74, 75, depending on the direction of rotation, to one or the other of the drums 71, 72 and, from there, to the driven shaft 70., -
The relaxation of the accelerator 6 determines a movement; return of the appendage-cam detaching the two coil springs from the drum and interrupting the transmission.
Figures 13 to 16 show another embodiment of the present invention relating to a friction clutch provided with a hydraulic formed and carried. by the :. clutch members' and acting so as to engage them in a proportion proportional to the difference in their speeds, of rotation.
In Figures-13, 14, 15 and 16, according to this embodiment, there is shown a clutch comprising a box 90, a. conductive member 82 having exterior grooves 83 and internally having an inclined plane or concave plate 84; des: conductor plates 85 slidably mounted on the splines, 83 and in engagement with the conduit plates 86; of. duct members 87, 88, fixed to each other by bolts 89, on which the plates 86 are mounted to cpulisse and a driven shaft 91 bolted part 88.

In the body of. pump 94 are formed conduits 98 and circular grooves, communicating by trcus 100, with the underside of the pistons 95; in place 88 are provided; circular grooves HERE, radial grooves 102 establishing communication between check valves 97 and cylinders 93, and a short groove 103 in the direction. radius communicating with the ICI groove (see in particular figure 15). The shaft 91 has, at its surface, annular grooves 104, 105. An oil-tight sleeve 108 surrounds the shaft 91. 11 is, moreover, disposed a central rod 109 which can slide in the direction of its axis and which carries, at one end, a disc 110 which is in contact with it. .with the pistons 95, by the shoulders III, and at its other end, a pin 112, sliding in a groove of the shaft 91 and engaging in a sliding sleeve 113 which carries a bearing and journal block 114, arranged to be controlled by a bifurcated caliper 115 mounted to oscillate in a .90 box and carrying an external lever 116 (see more particularly in figure 16) In the box 90 is fitted, an oil tank 117 having, in its cover, a small opening (not shown)

The oil pressure in the cylinders 93 is thus controlled by the compression of the spring 120 which can be regulated by the pressure system. screw adjustment 121.
The oil pressure in the cylinders
93 pushes forward the hydraulic pistons 93x which press against each other the clutch plates 86 ,, 85 contrary to the tension exerted by the springs 92; in this way the rotation is transmitted, from the conductive organ 82, to the driven organs 87, 88 and 91.
As long as there is relative rotation between the organs 82 and
88, the pumping effect of pistons 95 continues and becomes more forceful as the ratio of relative rotations is increased. When the clutch members are fully engaged, the compression of the spring 120 maintains the oil pressure in the cylinders 93 and thus keeps the clutch members engaged.
Conversely, the release of the accelerator pedal 6 (FIG. I) moves the pistons 95 away from their contact with the concave plate 84 and turns the adjustment valve 124 so as to open the communication between the conduits 122 and 123.
The pressure in the oil pipe then drops and the piston 119 of the oil accumulator is returned, by the spring 120, which delivers the accumulated oil, through the pipes 122, 123, towards the reservoir. II7, le-qtlel is always at atmospheric pressure; at the same time the oil from the cylinders 93 is also returned via the conduits 102, ICI, 103, 107, 105, 128, 123 and 122; the pistons 93x are returned by the springs 92 which, at the same time, disengage the clutch members 85, 86, which allows the conductive member 82 to move independently of the driven members 87, 88, and 91.
