" Machines à découper en tranches. "

<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Slicing machines."
The present invention relates to slicing machines of the type in which the substance to be sliced is attached to a device (hereinafter referred to as the "feed table") associated with a feed mechanism. which advances it to a carving knife, the said feed mechanism comprising a feed screw and a co-acting feed element (hereinafter referred to as the "feed nut").

tation "). The. fixing (the! 1 \ JhfJt, ncr) is offootuôa by means of a clamp carried by one or two uprights mounted on the. feed table.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In such machines, it is customary to provide a device for removing the feed nut from its engagement with the feed screw in such a way that the feed table can be advanced or pulled back independently. of the feed mechanism. It is desirable that the above device be conveniently accessible to the operator, and for this purpose it should preferably be near the collet by which the substance is held in position on the machine. .
The above desiderata is achieved in a manner improved by the present invention, in which the collet is supported (either entirely or partially) by a hollow post provided with a device controlling the feed nut through the inter mediary of an element which passes through the said upright. By proper handling of the above device, the feed nut can, at will, be removed from its engagement with, or be engaged with, the feed screw.
Apart from the control device, the entire mechanism is hidden from view.
The invention is shown by means of an example in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional view showing the invention as applied to a slicing machine of the well known type with an alternating motion carriage. native, the parts of the machine which the invention does not immediately concern being represented schematically in phantom.
The slicing machine shown comprises a reciprocating carriage 1 and a rotary knife 2, both of which are operated in a well-known manner by means of a crank 3. The infeed table
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is indicated at 4 and is attached to a guide block 5 which can slide along a tube 6 attached at its end to the carriage 1. The tube 6 serves as a casing for the feed screw 7 which is journalled at its end in the tube 6.
The feed screw 7 is normally engaged by the control nut which consists of a nut portion 8 mounted on a pivot at 8a at the lower part of the block 5 and passing through a groove which extends along the base tube 6.
The collet of the machine comprises a collet arm 9 provided with a handle 9a and adjustable in an adjustable manner on a hollow post 16 which is mounted on the block 5 and the infeed table.
To operate the machine, the substance to be sliced is first of all attached to the infeed table 4 by the adjustable clamp arm 9 /
The carriage is then driven by a reciprocating movement and the feed screw 7 is rotated intermittently by an automatic mechanism which is well known in the part and which for this reason has not been shown. - felt. The feed nut 8 consequently receives intermittent movements of the feed screw and communicates them to the block 5 and to the feed table. The result is that slices are successively cut from the substance by the knife.
So that the feed nut 8 can be released at will from the feed screw 7 so as to allow the feed table to be slid freely towards the knife or to be removed from it, the feed nut 8 is supported by a claw 14 which protrudes from the lower end of a rod 15 on which it can be adjusted, which rod rises vertically through the hollow post 16.
The rod 15 is constantly pushed upwards by a spring 17 so as to maintain, or tend to maintain the

-or or 8 in engagement with screw 7; but the rod 15 can be pressed down, so as to release the nut 8, by means of a cam device 18 operable by hand mounted on a pivot at the top of the post 16. A cap 18a on the cam is used. to keep the feed nut in its disengaged position.
As can be seen from the drawings, the cam device is as conveniently accessible to the operator as the grip 9a of the collet.
The number 10 designates a plate constituting part of the carriage 1. This plate has a slide 11 below it, along which moves a roller 12 which serves to prevent the feeding table from overturning, this roller being carried for this purpose by a bar 13 fixed to the block 5.
It should be understood that the construction described above was chosen simply by way of example, and that alterations or modifications can obviously be made without departing from the object of the invention. For example, the collet can be supported between two uprights located on opposite sides of the infeed table in the well-known ordinary fashion, and the infeed table may be guided in any suitable way on the cart. (or on another part of the machine, such as its fixed frame in cases where the knife is moved on the material to be cut.)
