<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Metallic pug For the working of the silk, we use wooden pugs with artificial fiber cheeks and a wooden tube inserted in the axis of the pug to serve as a guide for the spindle The artificial fiber has been chosen for the cheeks due to its resistance to deformation, this part being more particularly exposed to shocks and the tang during unwinding scuffing in contact with the slightest roughness
Under the influence of alternate moorings and drying, wooden pugs split and become unusable; despite their relatively low price, this results in a fairly low maintenance expense.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
An attempt has been made to replace them with aluminum latches, but this metal is too deformable, it also gives the spindle spring an exaggerated grip and the method of construction to remedy these defects was too complicated to afford a price. acceptable cost.
According to the present invention these difficulties have been overcome by employing, instead of aluminum, a light alloy capable of acquiring very great hardness by quenching, such as certain alloys of aluminum and magnesium. The ease with which these alloys can be stamped and lathe worked has enabled the inventors to adopt a simple construction which eliminates any danger of alteration of the tang and very notably lowers the cost of the object.
On the attached drawing:
Figure 1 shows in section an embodiment of this new type of pug; in clan
Figure 2 gives the view from above.
Figures 3 and 4 relate to a variant.
Figure 5 shows another variant.
We will first refer to Figures 1 and 2.
A cylindrical tube A, made of duralumin for example, intended to form the body of the pug, is folded at one of its ends towards the inside so as to form a bottom B pierced in its center with a circular hub. At its other end, the tube A is bent outwards to give a flange C on which will be fixed by crimping a plate forming the second bottom D of the pug. On this plate a small cone E has been stamped in its center, penetrating inside the pug of the desired length to give a solid fulcrum for the spring of the spindle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Before crimping the funnel on the rim C, a funnel F is introduced into the interior of the tube A using a press, the cylindrical ring G of which reinforces the tube A its point of least resistance and the rod H of which is used to guide the spindle for its entry into the small adjustment I, which comes from the stamping of a plywood J, which is assembled with the base B by means of sunken shank rivets, after interposition of the cheek K.
This cheek piece K is made of artificial fiber or any other material very resistant to shocks while having great elasticity. With an external riveting and a flange C of less protrusion, the bottom D can also be provided with a second elastic cheek and plywood, if needed.
Finally in other cases, the cheeks can, on the contrary, .être completely removed and the bases D and J be directly crimped on the tube A without any external rim.
The pug described above is intended for use with a spring loaded wire feed pin; it is also used with smooth spinning spindles, but these can get stuck or, if there is play, vibrate ovalizing the passage through the upper cheek, rendering the pug quickly unusable.
To avoid this drawback, the device of FIGS. 3 and 4 will preferably be used, in which one of the parts of said pug is made to act as a spring, which at the same time makes it possible to simplify the unwinding spindle, by making the spring thereof unnecessary .
As shown in figure 3 this is achieved by terminating the funnel F with a tube H of a diameter smaller than that of the tube I of the backing plate J, and dividing the funnel F, into segments stopped at
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the cylindrical ring G, fixed to the body A of the pug, for example by punching.
In order to avoid any jamming while ensuring perfect centering, according to the invention there is provided the arrangement which consists in placing the pug at a variable height on the spindle according to its dimension.
This arrangement is shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. The plate P is fixed for example by crimping on the pin at the height of which the bottom D of the pug must stop. This plate P is convex, so as to fit with the minimum amount of play in the re-entrant part of the base D.
In the variant of FIG. 5, the guiding of the pin through the cheeks, instead of being obtained by stamped or added metal parts, is carried out by giving the cheeks an extra thickness. For this, the disc K forms a cheek, has by itself the desired profile, such as B, or else, on the metal plate D assembled with the cylindrical body A, a washer L is attached, fixed by rivets or screws. In both cases; the material must be elastic enough so that jamming cannot occur even with hard friction; this will be for example: wood, fiber, or any other molded material, and so that the sectioning of the funnel into leaves F forming a spring can be eliminated.
The devices described above can be applied without modification to any textile industry material organ functioning as a pug, that is to say being mounted on a spindle; for example, spools, small or large, used in the spinning of artificial silk and which differ from a pug only in their dimensions.
