Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Des exemples d'exécution   d'appareils   de réfrigé- ration conformes à   l'invention,   sont représentés schémati- quement sur le dessin annexée sur lequel ;
La fig. 1 est une élévation schématique en coupe d'un appareil muni d'un seul générateur;
La fig. 4 est une vue schématique d'un mécanisme à bascule de commande des vannes d'un appareil muni d'un générateur double;
La fig. 5 est un schéma des circuits de réchauf- fage ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

   Improvements to reversible absorption or adsorption refrigerators.

   -¯. This invention relates to a reversible intermittent absorption or adsorption refrigerator apparatus, preferably of genr3 using a solid state absorbent substance such as calcium chloride or the like salt, or an adsorption substance such as calcium chloride. charcoal silicic jelly or an equivalent, the refrigerant being ammonia or any other amine;, or a halide salt absorbing a sulphurous suboxide, or a hydroxide absorbing alcohol. The invention is also applicable to the ordinary wet absorption refrigeration system which uses, for example, water and ammonia.

   The invention can also be applied to the type of reversible refrigeration apparatus in which two generators are provided, operating in opposite phase, heated and cooled by heat exchange with a fluid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The main characteristic of the invention consists of one or more generators constantly immersed in a fluid located around the generator; during the reheating phase, the heat is transmitted to the generator via this fluid which, on the contrary, during the re-absorption or re-adsorption phase circulates in a cooler.

   Advantageously, water can be used as the fluid, and to ensure efficient heating and cooling it is preferable to use a liquid as the fluid. However, during the reheating phase, the fluid can be allowed to take on the vaporous state, that is to say that of vapor in the case of water.

   In the case of a double machine comprising two generators operating in opposite phase, the same cooler can be used for the fluid envelopes of the two generators, the circulation between each jacket and the cooler being interrupted alternately.

     The fluid envelopes communicate with the cooler from above and below, and by simply interrupting communication at the top, the convection circulation of the fluid is located in the envelope or in each envelope, without interrupting the flow. communication from the bottom, while when communication is reestablished in hait, a thermosyphon circulation can be established upwards in the enclosure and downwards in the chiller.

   The envelope of the fluid is preferably narrow, so as to limit the amount of fluid to be cooled at the onset of the phase change and therefore the loss which results therefrom. In addition, the generator is preferably annular in shape and provided with an annular casing, and heats axially so as to localize the convection during the reheating phase.

   The cooler is preferably air cooled.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Exemplary embodiments of refrigeration apparatus in accordance with the invention are shown schematically in the accompanying drawing in which;
Fig. 1 is a schematic sectional elevation of an apparatus provided with a single generator;
Fig. 2 is a schematic sectional elevation of a double generator, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the evaporators intended for the previous one
Fig. 4 is a schematic view of a toggle mechanism for controlling the valves of an apparatus provided with a double generator;
Fig. 5 is a diagram of the heating circuits;
Fig. 6 is a schematic sectional elevation of a variant.

   If reference is made more particularly to FIG. 1, it will be seen that a represents a generator of an absorption refrigeration appliance. This generator has an annular cylindrical shape with a vertical axis, it contains an absorption agent in the solid state, such as calcium chloride.

   This generator a is placed in a vertical annular cylindrical envelope b which closely surrounds the walls of the generator a and leaves only a narrow gap between them. The casing b communicates from above by means of a pipe c inclined upwards and from below by means of a pipe d inclined downwards, with the top and the bottom respectively of a cooler e. The cooler e is provided on the outside with fins e1 intended for conduction and radiation of heat towards the atmosphere.

   The casing b, pipes c and d, and the cooler e are filled with water and completely closed.

  However the upper part of the cooler is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 fitted with an expandable gusset f. g is a valve which closes the top of the pipe c when the bellows f is folded back. h is a gas burner placed under the axial chimney of the annular casing b.

   During the release phase of the operation of the refrigeration appliance. the flame of the burner h heats the water in the casing b, and as a result of the obstruction of the pipe c by the valve g the water can circulate only by convection inside the casing and is not allowed to circulate in the cooler e. the action of heat is therefore localized around generator a.

   The heat from the flame of the burner h is transmitted by the water in the casing b to the generator a and it releases the refrigerant, for example ammonia previously absorbed by the solid absorbent which is there.

   Then, after a certain warm-up time, the water pressure in the casing b, the pipes c and d. and the pressure cooler corresponding to the pressure of the vapor generated by the hot water of the casing b increased by the expansion which replaced the water ;, causes the bellows f to lengthen, by means of of a rocking mechanism which will be described later, the elongated bellows f opens the valve g and closes the gas valve i so as to reduce or eliminate the arrival of gas to the burner h.

   Communication between the pipe c and the upper part of the cooler e is thus re-established, and the water is allowed to circulate in a thermosiphon, passing through the cooler e downwards to be cooled there, and the casing b towards the top to cool the generator a and the absorbent therein in the solid state, the reabsorption of the refrigerant is thus initiated and carried out.

   The method of reheating the generator of a refrigeration appliance by means of a liquid whose circula-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tion is located in an enclosure surrounding the generator, by interrupting transmission of liquid to a cooler, and cooling of the generator by reestablishing circulation in the coolerg can be used in an apparatus comprising a double generator operating in opposite phases. The generators of a double device of this kind are shown in fig 2 on which a1 designates one of the generators and a2 the other. b1, b2 are the envelopes connected at the top by the pipes c1, c2 and at the bottom by the pipes d1. d2 to a common cooler e.

   The pipe c1 of the casing bl is closed by a valve g1, and the pipe c2 of the casing b2 is closed by a valve g2. The g1.g2 valves are mounted on a g3 balancer, and by means of the tilting mechanism which will be described later. the bellows f tilts the balance g3 for each extension alternately in one or the other direction to open the valve g1 or g2 and close the other valve g2 or g1, so as to re-establish the transmission of water from enclosure b1 or b2 which has just been reheated and stop the communication of water from enclosure ± 2 or b1 to be heated.

   At the same time, the toggle mechanism, through the intermediary of the switch i1, closes the circuit of an electric heater h1 or h2 intended to heat the casing bl or b2, the empty gl or g2 of which is closed, and opens the circuit of the electric heater h or h1 of enclosure ± 2 or b1 with valve g2 or g1 open.

   Fig 2 shows the pipe cl closed by the valve gl and the pipe c2 opened by the valve g2, and the switch 1 is shown in the position of closing the heater circuit hl and opening the heater circuit h2.

   If we refer again to Fig. 1, we will see that the refrigerating vapor which is released by the solid absorbent substance when the generator a is heated, passes through a tube j in the upper part of a condenser k.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

  The condenser k is placed in the cooler e so that the water of the latter also serves to cool the condenser k.

   This condenser k is located below an evaporator 1 and the bottom of the condenser k is connected to the upper part of the evaporator 1 by means of a pipe m directed upwards, thus, the refrigerant after condensation, instead of flowing into evaporator 1 is pushed by pipe m into evaporator 1 by the pressure produced in generator a, This is made possible by the fact that generator 2, condenser k and the evaporator 1 are emptied of their air before being charged with the refrigerant,
To prevent the refrigerator from heating up by condensed refrigerant which is relatively hot,

     the evaporator 1 through which this condensed refrigerant passes is insulated against the heat from the usual brine tank o or from the refrigerator box n and is only connected to it directly thermally by an auxiliary evaporation system and of condensation as follows:
Evaporator 1 is a chamber isolated from heat placed in the vicinity, suitable for promoting heat exchange, of a chamber p communicating upwards through a pipe q and downwards through a pipe r with a serpentine s located below the level of chamber p in a brine tank o so as to form a closed circuit. Liquid ammonia or any other easily vaporizable liquid partly fills the chamber p connected to the coil which has been purged of air.

   When the evaporation of the refrigerant liquid takes place in the evaporator 1, the ammonia vapor or the like which is in the closed circuit of the chamber p connected to the coil, condenses, and by following of the reduction of the vapor pressure thus obtained in the closed circuit p, q, r, s, the ammonia or similar substance contained in the coil s starts to boil, which causes the cooling of the brine or the

 refrigerator., During the opposite phase, when hot refrigerant passes through evaporator 1, there is no heat transmission to the coil, because the chamber p which is connected to it and which also heats up, is placed at a higher level than the coil s.

   The refrigeration box n can contain a thermostat t which controls the setting of a valve or a switch t1 regulating the supply of gas or electricity to the burner h or burners or to the electric heater or heaters h1, h2. This is in addition to the periodic switching on of the reheating by the water pressure by means of which the reheating is carried out and controlled by the aforementioned rocker mechanism ,,
In the double apparatus shown in figs 2 and 3, the refrigerating vapor released by the generator a1, passes through a pipe j1 at the upper part of a condenser kl, consisting of a coil placed in the upper part of the cooler e . From the condenser coil k1, the condensed refrigerant flows through a pipe m1 into an evaporator i1.

   The evaporator 11 is placed at a distance suitably close to promote the heat exchange, from a chamber p1 communicating from above through a pipe q1 and from below through a pipe r1 with a coil s1, thus constituting a closed circuit containing an easily vaporizable liquid, as described with reference to fig 1.

   Likewise, the other generator a is connected by a pipe 2 to a coil condenser k2, which communicates by a pipe m2 with an evaporator 12, Similarly the evaporator 1, 2 is located sufficiently close to promoting the heat exchange of the chamber p2 in communication via the pipes q2 and r2 with a coil s2, the assembly constituting a closed circuit containing an easily vaporizable liquid.

   The toggle mechanism controlling the g1 valves,

 2 and the switch hl can be arranged, for example, as shown schematically in FIG. 4, as follows:
A pawl u is attached to the bellows f, this pawl is biased laterally by a spring u1 up to a stop u2, in this position the pawl engages a ratchet wheel with four teeth v of the ordinary quarter-turn switch it (fig. 2 and 5).

   This switch alternately turns on one or the other electric heater h1 or h2 of the two generators a1, a2. The switch changes position at the end of the expansion of the bellows f.

   As an alternative in the case of gas heating, the pawl u acts on a two-way gas valve to supply the gas intended for the generators a1 and a2 to one and then to the other burner.

   Inside the water space there is another pawl w which is centered by springs wl and is connected to the bellows f. This pawl centered by springs engages in one or the other of the alternative notches xl, x2 formed in a tilting disc x on which a spring y bears to hold it on one or the other side. from a dead point. The balance g3 on which the valves g1, g2 intended to ensure and eliminate communications between the water envelopes bl b2 and the cooler are mounted, oscillates on the same axis as the rocking disc x.

   Two studs z1 and z2 are provided, one on each side of the axis of the rocking disc x, one or the other of these studs z1, z2 rests alternately on the corresponding arm of the balance g3 so as to make tilt this balance which will close the corresponding valve gl or g2 on its seat and open the other g2 or g1. The g3 swinging valve balance is normally held in its extreme positions by a neutral z spring.

   In the case of a single generator has as

 shown in fig 1, the toggle mechanism can be roughly arranged as described above, however, it simply forms the gas valve h or opens a switch, and opens the valve g to reset. establish communication with the cooler e, it is then replaced by hand.

   In the case of the examples of apparatus described above, the cooler e and the casing b or the casings b1 and b2 constitute a completely closed system without communication with the atmosphere. As a consequence of the reheating of the casing b or of one or the other casing b1 or b2, the pressure introduced into the system makes it impossible for the water to boil and the formation of steam in it. the envelope in question,
However, if the cooler e communicates freely with the atmosphere, or if, moreover, the pressure cannot develop there, when the inert water in the casing b, b1 or b2 is reheated, steam will form there and water will drop there and be drawn into the cooler e.

   Additional heating of the generator a, a1 or a2 will take place thanks to the steam contained in the casing. A variant of the device operating in this way with steam heating of the generator is shown in fig 6.

   In figo 6 the elements are the same as those already described with reference to fig 1, with the difference that the upper part of the cooler e is in communication with the atmospheric air by means of
2 of a passage e 9 and that the valve g is open and the gas valve i closed by a thermally controlled rocker mechanism adjusted by hand.

   This rocking mechanism is of a known construction and consists of a tubular pocket 1 extending downwards inside the generator a, this pocket contains an easily fusible metal mass 2

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 on which rests a rod 3 provided at its upper part with a head 4. A rod 5 provided with a collar 6 rests on the head 4 of the rod 3. The collar 6 of the rod 5 serves support at the end of a lever 7 in opposition to the action of a spring 8, which tends to move the lever 7 obliquely. The lever 7 oscillates on the axis of the shutter of a gas valve forming the gas valve i on which it is mounted.

   The other end of the lever 7 is connected by a mortise joint to the rod 9 of the valve g. 10 is a spring which tends to keep the valve g lowered.

   In the position of the rocking mechanism as shown, corresponding to the closure of the upper end of the tube c by the valve g, position in which the gas valve i is open, the water from envelope b is heated by the flame of the burner h. As the water cannot exit from the top of the pipe c which is blocked, and since there can be no pressure in the cooler e due to the passage e2, the water in the casing b will eventually boil. and the vapor accumulating in the jacket will drive the water out of it through pipe d into cooler e. The continuous heating of the generator a will therefore take place via the steam in the jacket b.

   The melting temperature of the metal 2 in the tubular ladle 1 is provided so that the melting takes place when the temperature rises in the generator α, which occurs when almost all the refrigerant has been released. by generator a. The rod 3 can then be lowered under the influence of the spring 8 acting on the lever 7 and through the collar 6 and the rod 5.

   Lever 7 then escapes beyond the collar
6 and turn the gas valve shutter! to cut off the gas which goes to the burner h, at the same time as by countering the spring 10 it opens the valve g.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 the casing b then passes through the open pipe ± in the cooler, where it condenses, and the water from the cooler e passes through the pipe d into the casing b which it cools, then circulates in the tube c and returns to the cooler.

   11 is a spring placed under the head 4 of the rod c, it lifts the rod 3 from contact with the molten metal 2, and thus prevents it from being taken in its mass when the metal 2 under the action of cooling re - takes the solid state.

   The rocking mechanism is then replaced by hand in the position shown in FIG. 6.
