 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Method and device for caning skins and the like.

   The present invention relates to a process for tanning hides and to: the like, a process whereby the material to be tanned is exposed to the action of vacuum in a closed container, while the tanning liquid is forced, by means of a pump or similar device, to circulate in the container in question containing the material to be tanned, the vapors and similar gases sucked during this vacuum treatment being condensed.

   It has been found that the vapors sucked in during the vacuum treatment are accompanied by various more or less volatile acids and other active substances from the tanning liquid whose content of such substance is thus gradually reduced during the treatment.

   The object of the present invention is to avoid this disadvantage.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 it is, and it consists mainly in that the product of the vapor coniensation is returned directly into the tanning vessel as it condenses during the operation, so that the content of the tanning liquid in volatile acids is kept as constant as possible throughout the operation,
When the tanning material introduced into the container is first heated to a suitable temperature and then subjected to the action of a high vacuum, before the tanning liquid is introduced into the container, the product of the condensation of the vapors during this first vacuum treatment contains the main% ent:

  water and other substances from the material to be tanned, water and substances which are naturally not useful during tanning. In this case we can therefore, according to the invention diri-ger in a collector the condensation product obtained during this first vacuum treatment, while the condensation product withdrawn after the introduction of the tanning liquid into the container is returned directly into the tanning vessel.

   An exemplary embodiment of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.

   Fig 1 shows a tanning vessel, seen from the end, and Fig 2 is a side view.

   In the embodiment shown, the device consists of a tanning vessel 1 comprising a door 2 for the introduction of the material to be tanned and at the bottom, a loop pipe 3 into which steam can be sent for heat the contents of the container. A pump 4 is used to circulate the tanning liquid through the container, and for this purpose it is connected to the lower part of the container by a suction pipe 5 provided: the one shut-off valve and to the upper part of @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 container through a delivery pipe 6.

   The suction side of the pump also communicates, through a pipe 7 provided with a shut-off valve, with a container 8 (it is located under the container 1,: the way read the tanning liquid prepared in the container 8 can be delivered by the pump into the container 1, The upper part of the container communicates by a pipe 9 with a condenser 10 connected by a tuayu
11 to a vacuum pump, not shown.

   A pipe 13 provided with a shut-off valve 12 and extending from the lower part of the conjensor terminates in the tanning container 1 and may preferably have a check valve at its end opening into the container; furthermore, a pipe 15 with a shut-off valve 14 also leaves from the bottom of the condenser and terminates at a condensate collector 16.

   While the material to be tanned is treated by the tanning liquid kept circulating through the container by the pump 4, a vacuum is constantly maintained in the container and the vapors sucked through the pipe 9 condense in the condenser 10. According to the invention, the product of this condensation is returned directly to the tanning vessel 1 through the pipe 13, which means that the active acid elements entrained with the vapors are immediately reintroduced into the tanning liquid and that the latter therefore retains all its power of tanning.

  During this time the valve 14 is kept closed naturally, so that no condensation product can escape into the manifold 16.

   When the material to be tanned is introduced into the container 1 andt first heated to a suitable temperature, then subjected to the action of a high vacuum before the tanning liquid is introduced into the container, the vapors from the material to be tanned and released during this first vacuum treatment also condenses in the condenser 10. However, the product of

 this condensation mainly contains water and:

  other substances from the material to be tanned, and as these substances are not useful during the subsequent tanning, the condensation product obtained during this first vacuum treatment is conducted through pipe 15 into the condensate collector 16 The valve 12 is naturally kept closed during this time. When this preparatory treatment is completed and the tanning liquid has been introduced into the container, the pipe 15 is closed by means of the valve 14 and the valve 12 is opened, so that the condensation product which forms during the subsequent tanning is returned to the tanning vessel.
