 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  "Speed regulator with brake shoe adjustable in relation to the braking surface".

   The invention relates to a speed regulator provided with an adjustable shoe relative to the braking surface. In this description, the expression "brake shoe" should be taken in a sufficiently broad sense to include any member cooperating by friction with a rotating braking surface, preferably with the driven apparatus.

   As we know, it is possible, by adjusting the position of the shoe relative to this surface, to modify the pressure between these two bodies and thus to regulate the speed of the apparatus, in -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 determined limits, for any desired value. In current speed governors, the adjustment is in most cases done at the Dean of a lever system which has the disadvantage of being complicated and hence quite expensive.

   In addition, we have. observed in practice that speed regulators of this kind generally have the disadvantage that if the shoe, usually made of rubber or felt, wears out, it becomes very difficult or impossible to regulate the speed, because the adjustment of the hoof is mechanically limited on both sides. If it is worn, the shoe will therefore not be able to exert, in the extreme positions, the same pressure on the braking surface as if it were not worn; the speeds for these extreme positions will therefore be different in the two cases. To eliminate this drawback, it is necessary, in most cases, to renew the shoe or modify its position in a complicated manner, which can cause difficulties in use.

   The object of the invention is a speed regulator of a simple and economical construction, which does not have the aforementioned drawback inherent in the wear of the shoe and allows a more precise adjustment than existing regulators of this type.

   In the speed regulator according to the invention, the position of the brake shoe is coded using at least two eccentrics, preferably two plates. The simplest embodiment has two of these eccentrics. If such a regulator is used in order to maintain the speed of the driven apparatus at a determined value, the rotation of one of the eccentrics in question will preferably be used to modify the position. of the brake shoe in relation to the sur: face of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 braking in accordance with the wear of the shoe.

   This means that when the shoe has worn out so as to no longer allow adjustment to be made within the desired limits by rotating the other eccentric, it suffices to code the position of the first eccentric - the regulator does not not working - so as to return the active surface of the shoe to such a position relative to the braking surface that the speed regulation within the normal limits is again possible. In this case the eccentricity of the two eccentrics can be equal or different.

   In the event that the regulator is used in devices the speed of which must be adjustable between fairly wide limits, it is advantageous to use one of the two eccentrics for coarse adjustment and the other for precise adjustment. speed, the eccentric - of the first eccentric being preferably greater than that of the second. In this way, if the shoe is worn, a slight modification of the position of the most eccentric eccentric, allows the normal adjustment using the other eccentric.

  This also means that in the event of wear, the shoe can be adjusted several times before its replacement becomes necessary.

   The use of eccentrics makes it possible to eliminate the mechanical stops for the brake shoe, since it is possible to cause the shoe to move automatically between two extreme positions at each revolution of the eccentrics. The elimination of these stops significantly simplifies the mounting of the adjustment device. It goes without saying that in service, the adjusting eccentrics will only turn a fraction of a revolution.

   The invention can have several embodiments. According to a particularly suitable embodiment

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 required, the position of the shoe relative to the braking surface is determined by a flexible metal band or cable which is passed around the eccentrics and one end of which is connected to the movable shoe holder, the other end being immobilized * As a result, it is possible to avoid any disturbing play between the various transmission parts, which is practically impossible with speed governors having a lever transmission.

   It is advisable to turn the eccentric intended for the actual adjustment of the speed within fairly narrow limits, by means of an operating button, and to control the other eccentric, which must only be used for a while. in time, that is to say when the shoe is worn, by means of an adjustment pivot with screw head. The operating knob and the adjustment screw are preferably arranged close to each other and outside the housing in which the adjustment device is mounted.

   As is clear from what. above, it is advantageous to use a speed regulator of this kind in devices where it is a question of regulating the speed of any part, despite the inevitable wear of the shoe, always within the same limits, as is the case for speaking machines, that is to say phonographs, sound film installations and other similar devices. In phonographs, for example, the speed of the record holder can be easily adjusted in this way from the top panel of the housing in which the drive motor with the speed regulator is mounted.

   The exact speed setting can be checked, after bringing the worn shoe to the minimum, by the stroboscopic process, that is to say by forming on the plate turning marks and exposing them in a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 appropriate to the light from a light source.

   The description given below with reference to the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out.

   FIG. 1 represents an embodiment of the invention.

   Figure 2 is a detail view of Figure 1.

   FIG. 3 represents another embodiment of the invention applied to a phonograph.

   Figure 4 is a detail view of Figure 3.

   In Figure 1, 1 is a cylinder or shaft connected to the device whose speed is to be adjusted using a speed regulator according to the invention. On the cylinder is fixed a plate 2, on which a movable brake shoe 3, made of felt for example, can brake by friction. For this purpose, the shoe is arranged on a lever 4 articulated to a support plate 6. The other end of the lever is connected at 7 to a spring 8 fixed at 9 at a fixed point. The spring therefore always tends to bring the lever 4 and, consequently, the shoe 3 in the position shown, that is to say it tends to prevent the shoe from coming into braking contact with the plate 2 The movement of the lever to the right is limited because its boss-shaped end 11 bears against an eccentric 13 mounted on. the pivot 12.

   This pivot is provided with an operating button 14 and rotates in a socket 15 mounted in a wall 16 of the device to be driven. When the knob 14 is rotated with the pivot 12, the eccentric 13 also rotates and thereby the lever 4 is moved to one side or the other. We see that it is thus possible to bring the shoe

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 in braking contact with plate 2 and to adjust the pressure between these two components to a determined value so as to adjust the speed of cylinder 1 and, therefore, that of the device drives *
The pivot 12 also carries a plate 17 which engages in the groove of an eccentric 19 fixed on the pivot 18. The latter is journaled in the wall 16 by means of two bushings 20 and 21 and comprises a head. 22 to 23 groove.

  The friction between the plates 17 and 19 is such that, when the pivot 18 is rotated by means of a screwdriver inserted into the groove 23, the plate 17 does not rotate, but moves with the sleeve 15, the pivot 12 and the button 14 on one side or the other in the lateral direction in the opening 24 made in the wall 16. Conversely, the friction of the pivot 18 in the sockets 20 and 21 is such that a rotation of the button 14 has no influence on the position of the plate 19.

   This device works as follows:
When the shoe is worn to such an extent that a rotation of the button 14 no longer makes it possible to ensure the required speeds of the driven apparatus, because the exact pressure between the shoe and the plate can no longer be reached, it suffices to change the position of plate 19 by means of a screwdriver (the regulator not working) to give the shoe 3, with respect to plate 2, a position such that by turning button 14, one obtains the same speed setting as before.

   It will be understood that it is extremely easy to carry out such an adjustment and that in the event of wear of the shoe, it should not be replaced immediately.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   It is seen in Figure 3 how, in this embodiment, the speed regulator can be employed in a suitable manner to regulate the speed of the record holder of a phonograph. 25 designates the casing of the electric motor which, by means of the shaft 26 and the tangent wheel transmission 27, drives the axis 28 of the disc holder plate 29. The shaft 26 carries a speed regulator consisting of of a cylinder 30 fixed on the shaft and of a cylinder 31 sliding on the first and connected to a flange 34 of the cylinder 30 by springs 32 carrying weights 33. When the djsque plate rotates, the weights of the regulator move apart as a result of the centrifugal force, so that the cylinder 31 slides on the cylinder 30.

   As a result, the annular flange 35 of the cylinder 31 is moved laterally and comes to press against a shoe 36 made of felt fixed to a lever 38 articulated at 37 inside the carcass 25.

  How we can give the lever 38 different positions and keep it therein will be described later. The lever is connected to a spring 38a fixed to a protruding boss 39 of the frame 25 of the motor.

   The spring therefore always tends to move the lever 38 as far as possible to the right and to move the shoe away from the flange 35; this moves away from the shoe when the engine is stopped. The action of the spring is, however, partially counterbalanced by the following device:
The end of the lever 38 passing through the opening 39a of the motor frame is, as can clearly be seen in FIG. 4, provided with journals 40 which can engage in a fork 41 connected to one end of a band metal 42. This passes over the rotating eccentrics 43 and 44 and is fixed by the other end to a pin 45 forming part of a support 46 mounted on the frame 25.

  This support also carries the pins 47 and 48 to which the eccentrics 43 and 44 are fixed. These pins pass through the upper plate 49 of the phonographic cabinet and are provided with fittings.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 pectively an operating button 50 and a groove head 51 51a.

   Figure 4 clearly shows that the adjustment of the position of the platform 43 as well as the adjustment of the plate 44 results in reciprocating displacement of the boss lever 38 36. Of course, the friction between the different parts should be such that the adjustment of one board does not influence that of the other. In a manner analogous to that described for the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the button 50 can be used for the actual adjustment of the speed, and the screw head 51 for the secondary focusing of the shoe. brake if it is worn to such an extent that it is not possible to carry out the normal adjustment using button 50.

   As the disc tray rotates, the flange 35 moves to the right. By turning the button 50 so that the lever 38 moves to the left, it is possible, for a determined speed, to bring the plate into braking contact with the felt shoe 36. The angle of rotation of the button 50 therefore determines. the pressure between the flange 35 and the shoe 36, and hence the speed of the disc carrier.

   When the shoe is worn, it suffices to rotate the eccentric 44 by means of a screwdriver until the shoe occupies its rest position, that is to say, occupies, the motor being at 1 ' stop, the same position in relation to the braking surface as when not worn. It is clear that an easy and rapid adjustment of the hoof can thus be obtained.
