<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improved method and means for wrapping ribbons, braids, soutaches and the like
The present invention relates to the wrapping of ribbons, braids, soutaches and the like, and its object is to wrap the material in such a way that while it is completely covered and protected during handling against dirt, dust and grease, however, a part remains exposed which can be used for checking the color or for other purposes.
Following the invention, the ribbon, the braid, the soutache or the like (hereinafter referred to as "ribbon" for simplicity), which is preferably wound on a card or similar support, is enclosed in a package having an opening through which one end of the ribbon passes in order to leave part of the

tape exposed outside the packet, the tip of the exposed portion of the tape preferably being sealed to the outside of the packet by a gummed label or otherwise.
Preferably, the package comprises: a paper envelope or label, which may be imprinted with the designation of the material, and transparent part or parts of cellophane or other suitable transparent material.
The transparent material can be made to form a packet completely enclosing the tape and the paper envelope, matching holes being made in the envelope and in the packet, through which one end of the tape passes and is sealed. on the outside of the package. Alternatively, the transparent material may not form a complete package but may be in two parts, each covering one of the end parts of the coiled card and leaving a central strip or area exposed around which the paper wrapper or label is affixed by adhesive to the outside of the transparent parts to form a package; a hole being made in the envelope or label through which one end of the tape passes as before.
The holes in the casing and the transparent cover may be circular or any other suitable shape.
The tape is effectively covered and protected at the same time that one end of it is exposed for examination, verification or other purposes.
In order for the invention to be clearly understood, the accompanying drawing has been shown, given solely by way of example, of embodiments of the invention.

Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line Z-Z-of Fig. 1 and
Fig.6 is a section taken along the line S-S of Fig.3, these last two sections looking in the direction of the arrows.
As shown in Fig. 1, the flat ribbon or braid a is wound onto a card or other medium b in layers or coils and is then wrapped in its central area, by a paper or other envelope or label surrounding it. , indicated in dotted lines at 0 and which can bear the description of the ribbon or braid Printed, and the whole is then enclosed in a cover of cellophane or other transparent material µ in order to form a package ,. A circular hole or other suitable opening 1 is made in both the envelope c and the transparent cover d; the end of the tape passes out through opening 1 and is exposed on the outside of the package where its end is sealed by a gummed label a2 on the outside of the cellophane envelope.
The small label a2 may have a color number such as 38 to indicate the color of the ribbon.
In the variant shown in Fig.3, the tape wound on its support b, is covered or enclosed at each end by a transparent material; there is an upper part d1 and a lower part d, these parts constituting pockets which can be slid on the tape, the upper part d1 going down to the dotted line e, and the lower part d2 going up to the dotted line e1 thus leaving an uncovered central zone between 1 and e1. This central zone is subsequently covered by means of a paper envelope or label, and this label can be printed on
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
it describes the nature and the material of the tape.
The wrapper, so that it can be held firmly in position, is adhesively secured to the pocket portions d1 and d2 thereby forming a complete bundle for the tape. A hole f is made in the paper envelope through which one end a1 of the ribbon passes and is exposed as before, this end being sealed at the top by means of a small label marked with the number of the color of the ribbon.
Packages made in this way have considerable advantages as they allow the color of the article to be promptly seen at all times through the transparent material at the same time that the protruding end of the tape can be immediately examined or manipulated. if necessary, without exposing, unwinding or handling the mass of the tape which is fully protected against dust and dirt.
In particular, this way of wrapping is of special advantage when it is desired to compare sewing thread or cotton to match the ribbon or braid; since only the end of the ribbon or braid itself is exposed, the bundle itself can be picked up and the delicate colors carefully compared with the exposed part, without the need for d 'open the package.
In some cases where it is desired that the light not act on the tape, the covering material may be entirely opaque instead of being transparent.
In other cases the paper envelope may be omitted or be on the outside of the packet instead of on the inside as in Fig. 1.
The hole or opening.! for the passage of the exposed part of the tape can .be arranged at will in the best way for packaging.
Sometimes, if desired, the end of the exposed part
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tape can be inserted into a slit or opening at the top of the packet instead of being secured by a gummed label.
The label or envelope may be arranged so that the end of the tape passes through the clear cover without passing through the label or envelope.
