Perfectionnements apportés aux étaux à commande à main.
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig. 1 est une élévation latérale de l'étau;
Lasfig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements made to manually operated vices.
EMI1.1
It "adē 01 ..- In a Belgian patent N 300.409. Filed on 17
September 1931, the applicant has already proposed to improve hand-operated vices.
However, the vise described in this Belgian patent has a clamping screw for actuating the movable jaw which does not allow the engagement between the branches of the vise of large parts such as sheets.
The object of the present invention is to provide other improvements to manually operated vices, in particular with a view to facilitating the clamping for machining similar parts in large series.
It also aims to allow the clamping of large parts, such as sheets.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
An improved hand-operated vice according to the invention is characterized by a balance bearing two screws, the first screw mounted on the lower part of the balance and resting on a fixed point, which ensures the adjustment of the space. necessary between the jaws, the second screw being mounted on the upper part of the balance and ensuring the locking of the movable jaw, this arrangement thus making it possible to produce a hand-operated vice with easy adjustment and high jaw, no- especially for clamping bulky parts such as sheet metal.
According to one embodiment, a stirrup fixed on the fixed branch ensures the guiding of the tail of the movable jaw, as well as of the return spring of this jaw.
The invention also extends to other characteristics described below and to their various combinations.
An improved vice according to the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the vise;
Lasfig. 2 and 3 are two cross sections of the vice along lines 2-2 and 3-3 of fig. 1.
The vice comprises a fixed branch 1 and a mobile branch 2 articulated to each other on an axis 3 and each terminated by jaws 4 and 5.
On the same articulation 3 is fixed, towards its middle, a balance 6, the lower part of which is provided with a threaded bush 7 in which an adjustment screw 8 moves. The operation of this screw is carried out by hand. using a lever 9. The other end of this balance 6 is provided with a threaded bush 10 placed as close as possible to the jaw 5 in order to prevent bending of the branch 2 during the Tightening ; this bush moves a pressure screw 11 maneu-

vrée by a lever 12 and intended to bring the movable jaw 5 of the fixed jaw 4 in order to exert on the part to be clamped between these jaws a pressure as strong as that which is obtained with currently known screw clamping vices .
A return spring 13 fixed on the fixed branch
1 using a screw 14 is guided in a bracket 21.
This spring 13 is intended to open the movable jaw 2 when the pressure screw 11 or the adjustment screw 8 which adjusts the space between the two jaws 4 and 5 is loosened.
The stirrup 21 which serves both as a guide for the spring 13 and for the tail 20 of the movable branch 2 comprises a stop 24.
This stop 24 forms with the branches of the caliper 21 a U which fits on the fixed arm 1 on which this caliper is riveted, this stop thus makes it possible to avoid the shearing forces on the rivets -s d ' assembly when the movable branch 2 is released and abuts against the fixed branch 1.
A bracket 15 for fixing the vice on a workbench is riveted to the fixed upright 1.
The operation of the vice is as follows:
Any part 19 being clamped between the two jaws 4 and 5 of the vice, it suffices to move the jaws apart by turning the screw 11 by one turn using the clamping lever 12. The sleeve 10 of the balance 6 serving as a fulcrum for carrying out this operation, the action of the spring 13 maintains the end 16 of the screw 11 constantly in contact with the bottom of the notch 17 of the movable jaw 2. When the jaws 18 of the jaws 4 and 5 are no longer in contact with the part to be clamped 19, the latter is easily removed and an identical part can be immediately replaced. This saves a lot of time, especially for workpieces.

large dimensions.
To tighten the vice, the clamping lever 12 is made one turn in the opposite direction to the previous opera- tion, which makes the movable branch 2 move using the screw 11. The shank 20 of this amount while moving compresses the leaf spring 13 which is guided in the caliper 21. When there is a thinner or thicker part to work in series, it is necessary to tighten or loosen the screw 8 using the clamping lever 9, the end 22 of which is still resting on the face 23 of the bracket 21; during the tightening operation, the bush 10 of the balance 6 moves and closes the jaws by compressing the spring 13 with the aid of the / tail 20 of the end of the movable jaw 2.
When the screw 8 is loosened, the spring 13 opens the jaw 5 as a result of the pressure exerted on the shank 20 of the movable upright 2.
During these operations, the bush 7 of the balance 6 moves away from or approaches the caliper 2,1 which corresponds to the approach or the distance of the bushing 10 with respect to the fixed upright 1, since this balance oscillates around joint 3,
This arrangement has the advantage of reducing the distance L to a minimum, since if the stroke of the adjusting screw 8 were to be added to the current stroke of the clamping screw 11, the latter screw due to its greater length would have the disadvantage of forcing the worker using this vise to stand at a distance further from the jaws; screw 8 therefore has the advantage of reducing this distance L. to a minimum.
In summary, a hand-operated vice is produced which allows large-dimension parts to be machined in series, the initial adjustment of the movable jaw being easily effected by the operation of a via.
