MEMOIRE DESCRIPTIF DEPOSE A L'APPUI D'UNE DEMANDE DE BREVET D'INVENTION DISPOSITIF DE CHAUFFAGE POUR AUTOMOBILES,AVIONS, etc.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY FILED IN SUPPORT OF A PATENT OF INVENTION HEATING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES, AIRPLANES, etc.
Heating devices for automobiles, airplanes and similar vehicles are already known, in which a water tank is provided which by-passes the engine exhaust duct is interposed behind a suitable shutter member in the duct; this water tank then constituting a part of the heating device, while the exhaust duct is on the other hand equipped with a bypass duct which opens into the exhaust duct in front of the closure member and behind the tank.
The reservoir has the shape of a cylinder and as to the circulation of the water, this does not take place before this water has reached a sufficiently high temperature in the reservoir; however, it takes a fairly long time for it to arrive there, given that the heating surface is relatively
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
very small considering the tank capacity.
The heating device according to this invention eliminates these drawbacks, and it is characterized in that the exhaust duct is perforated with openings or holes intended to be covered by a duct wound spirally around this exhaust duct, and constituting the liquid reservoir; the spiral-turned duct being enclosed between flanges adapted to this exhaust duct with the ability to move and attached by screw bolts; around these flanges is arranged a gas-impermeable casing, so that the gases evacuated from the engine come into direct contact with the tank, from which results that the quantity of liquid of the heating device, which is only minimal very quickly acquires the desired heat and that it establishes an intense circulation.
To tell the truth, we already know the adaptation of a spiral duct around the exhaust duct, only it is the air which then serves as the active medium and the exhaust duct is not there. not pierced with these openings or holes, from which follows that it is only slowly that the heat of the exhaust gases passes to the transmitting medium.
What is also known is the arrangement of the liquid reservoir (consisting of a spiral wound duct) in the exhaust duct, but then there is so much resistance to the path of the exhaust gases, that in practice this method of realization cannot give satisfaction.
An embodiment according to the present invention can be seen in the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 gives a view showing the section of the liquid reservoir, while:
Fig. 2 gives a side view of the device and that:
Fig. 3 gives a projected plan view.
Preferably, the tank consists of a copper tube B which is shaped in a spiral around the exhaust duct C of the engine (or engines) which is perforated with openings or holes Z

intended to be covered by the turns. The tank B is fitted with an inlet pipe H and an outlet pipe G, these pipes being both connected to the heating radiators. In the outlet pipe C and in front of the tank B is arranged a drawer regulator D. The evacuation duct C is joined by a bypass duct E which gives the evacuated gases the exit to the outside when the drawer D is closed.
Tube B is placed between two movable J flanges on duct C, which flanges are attached together by screw bolts K and can be moved relative to each other, hence the possibility of tighten the turns of the helical pipe B against one another by moving these flanges J. around them is placed, with fixing by L-headed screws, an enveloping sheet A. In addition, it is provided, around tube B and right against it, a sheath N eh insulating material. Moreover, the space existing between this sheath N and the casing A may, where appropriate, also be padded with an insulating material,
The drawer D, the clearance of which gives control over the exhaust of the gases having been used, is terminated by an operating rod O; the drawer and its rod being movable in a housing P.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When the heating device is completely filled with water or another suitable liquid and the drawer D is more or less open, there is evacuation, to the outside, of part or all of the gases which, coming out through line 0,, raise the temperature of the liquid in the spiral pipe B; this causes the circulation of the liquid which by the action of the radiators heats the desired spaces.
Since the quantity of the liquid in the heating device is very small and the exhaust gases, thanks to the openings of the evaouation duct, come into immediate contact with the spiral pipe B, the heating of the liquid is very quickly, and as a result it is soon in circulation.

To adjust the heat to be supplied, the drawer D is moved so as to leave the passage opening for the duct C, either fully open, or else three-quarters, one-half or one-quarter.
