<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements to twisting machines.
The present invention relates to small twisting machines comprising a pair of rollers which are connected by gear wheels. Usually, in machines of this kind, an operating crank or handle is attached directly to the shaft of one of the rollers and therefore the rollers are operated at the same speed as the crank. For heavy work, it is often desirable to transmit the movement of the crank to the rollers by means of reduction gears, as is already customary in large twisting machines.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The aim of the present invention is to make it possible to apply a reduction gear to small machines in a simple and practical manner.
The invention comprises the combination, with one of the rollers, of a pair of coaxial toothed wheels of different diameters, the largest of which is an internally toothed wheel, of an intermediate wheel constantly in engagement with the smaller of the wheels. wheels of the roller, of a control shaft actuated by a crank and carrying a wheel which can be engaged with the large wheel or with the intermediate wheel, this shaft being supported at one end by a bearing intended to enable the shaft to tilt around this end, and an adjustable lever supporting the other end of the shaft, with means of immobilizing the lever.
In the accompanying explanatory drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a twisting machine provided with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the meshing wheels for operating the lower roller.
In the practice of the invention as shown, each of the end supports a, b which carry the rollers c, d between them is provided at a point below the lower shaft with a bearing in which an additional shaft e can be introduced, the latter being situated below the lower roller d and close to the lower part thereof.
The operating crank f is attached to one end of the shaft e and at this end the support a is provided with a ± bearing which allows the shaft to swing around this end in order to allow a toothed wheel h of the opposite end of the shaft to raise and lower as will be described below, the other end support b being provided with a hole 1 which allows the necessary freedom of movement of the adjacent end of the shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
On a plate j attached to the end support b rotates a lever k which carries the adjacent part of the shaft e.
This lever may be immobilized in one or the other of two positions by any suitable means such as a bolt 1 intended to pass through a slot m of the plate and provided with a knurled nut n intended for engage in one or the other of the two holes o located at the ends of the slot. On this plate is also mounted an intermediate wheel which engages with a small wheel g on the shaft of the lower roller d. A relatively large internally toothed wheel was also attached to the lower roller shaft.
When wheel h is lowered to mesh with large wheel r, movement is imparted at reduced speed from shaft e to lower roller d, while when wheel h is raised to mesh with intermediate wheel q, the movement is imparted to the lower roller at the same speed as that of the shaft e, the wheels h, p, q being all of the same diameter. By properly proportioning the diameters / different wheels, any desired gear ratio can be achieved.
Thanks to the present invention, it is possible to provide a twisting machine with a two-speed control mechanism in a very simple and convenient manner.
