 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

    @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 D'une façon générale, on pourrait aussi utiliser tous les systèmes de liaison transversale dont il est question ci-dessus pour les bogies, la caisse de la voiture à deux essieux jouant alors le rôle de la traverse de pivot du bogie. Au lieu que la suspension des sièges des ressorts hélicoïdaux par les ressorts en quart d'ellipse soit réa- lisée à l'aide de tiges passant à l'intérieur de ces res- sorts et de rotules convenables, cette suspension peut être effectuée de préférence au moyen de biellettes articulées réunissant les sièges des ressorts hélicoïdaux à des piè- ces prenant appui sur les extrémités des ressorte en quart d'ellipse;

La   figiare   1 est une vue en élévation d'un guide applicable dans le cas où la traverse de pivot est portée sur la traverse de   sommier   par l'intermédiaire de ressorts à pincettes transversaux, par exemple dans une suspension selon le brevet français n  626936 au nom de la même Socié- té ; la figure 2 est une vue de face du guide de la fi- gare 1 ; la figure 3 est une élévation analogue à celle de la figure 1, mais montrant une forme de réalisation diffé- rente pour la guide;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 la figure 4 est une vue analogue à la figure 2, mais correspondant à la figure 3;

   la figure 5 est une élévation transversale   analo-   gue à celle des figures 1 et 3, mais dans laquelle la tra- verse de sommier est reliée à la traverse de pivot par des biellettes articulées; la figure 6 est une élévation transversale d'une forme de réalisation dans le cas où les ressorts à pincet- tes s'appuient directement sur deux supports suspendus aux traverses médianes; la figure 7 est une élévation latérale d'un demi- bogie correspondant au cas de la figure 5 ; la figure 8 est une élévation transversale d'une forme de réalisation correspondant au cas où la traverse de pivot repose par l'intermédiaire de ressorts   hélicoi'-   daux sur des brides supérieures de ressorts semi-ellipti- ques, qui s'appuient sur des supports portés par les lon- gerons par l'intermédiaire de systèmes articulés;

   la figure 9 est une élévation transversale d'une autre forme de réalisation correspondant au cas du même type de suspension; la figure 10 est une élévation longitudinale mon- trant une suspension de la traverse de pivot au moyen de ressorte à lames longitudinaux, les deux sièges de chaque ressort à lames étant réunis par un dispositif relié à la traverse de pivot par des biellettes articulées; la figure 11 est une élévation transversale   oorres-   pondant à la figure 10; la figure 12 est une élévation transversale mon- trant un système de liaison transversale, établi conformé- ment à l'invention, entre la caisse d'un truck et les siè- ges des ressorts hélicoïdaux transmettant la charge de la caisse aux extrémités des ressorts en quart d'ellipse;

   et

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

   Aux figures 1 et 2, la traverse de pivot est indi- quée en 1 et la traverse de sommier double en   2;   pour évi- ter le roulement des ressorts à pincettes, on limite le jeu du déplacement transversal relatif de la traverse de pivot par rapport à la traverse de sommier en fixant à cet- te traverse de pivot deux guides 3 formant butées et agis- sant en sens inverses sur des galets 4 portés par la tra- verse de sommier au moyen d'un axe 5 et   d'écrous   6 ;

   Aux figures 3 et 4, la traverse de pivot est enco- re indiquée en 1, la traverse de sommier en 2, un des deux guides en 3 et sa surface plane de guidage en 8, mais cet- te surface n'agit plus sur des galets, mais seulement sur une pièce fixe 9 portée par la traverse 2; dans cette for- me de réalisation, le guide représenté fait corps avec la traverse de pivot ou lui est fixé. on a indiqué en 10 un ressort à pincettes dont la bride supérieure 11 est sur- montée d'une chape qui est reliée par une biellette 12 à la traverse de pivot et supporte celle-ci par l'intermé-   diaire   du ressort hélicoïdal 13, tandisque la bride infé- rieure 14 repose sur un support 15 porté par la traverse de sommier;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  IMPROVEMENTS TO SUSPENSION DEVICES
IN RAILWAY CARS
In rolling stock, it should be avoided that the springs of the suspension are subjected to forces other than the vertical forces which result from the suspension of the material itself.

   This is one of the important conditions for the correct functioning of the suspensions and it is also important for the determination as for the good resistance in service of the springs. If this condition is fulfilled, the springs are in fact no longer subjected to parasitic forces whose value cannot be determined and which cannot be sought

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 to take into account that by exaggerating the safety coefficient used in their calculation and, consequently, their dimensions.

   There are already devices intended to subtract the springs of the main suspension of trucks, as well as that of bogies, from the forces which they are most usually called upon to transmit, in the direction of travel of the material, and those to which they are subjected when starting or braking.

   But little has been done, until now, to remove them from the transverse forces to which they are subjected, and more particularly when passing bends at speed.

   In the main suspensions of these materials where helical springs are combined with leaf springs, the Applicant Company has, however, already endeavored to protect these helical springs against the transverse forces to which they may be subjected.

   The object of the present invention is devices intended to prevent the leaf springs of the suspension of the pivot cross member of a bogie from being able, under the influence of transverse forces which, for example, cannot 'would not have been sufficiently damped by the pendulum suspension which, most usually, carries the pivot cross member from the bogie frame, tilts on their supports and even manages to deform under the effect of these forces. These rocking movements can in fact hit each other back to the body in a way that is unpleasant for passengers and these possible deformations adversely affect the strength of the springs.

   This device, in cases where the leaf springs of the pivot cross member suspension are pincer springs or batteries of pincer springs available

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 sed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the box, on either side of this longitudinal axis, consists in connecting the actual pivot cross member which supports the case and which surmounts these springs or these batteries of springs - either directly , or by means of heloidal springs, including the seat which forms a yoke for these springs.

   tweezer or pincer spring batteries is already connected to the pivot cross member by a suitably arranged articulated system - either to the seats of these pincer springs or of these spring batteries, or to the bed cross member on which they rest. These seats or this mattress cross member are themselves connected to the bogie frame preferably by a pendulum suspension device, but can also be connected to this frame in a rigid manner.

   The connecting device, intended to secure, in the transverse direction, the seats of the springs or the gripper spring batteries or the bed cross member which carries these springs or these spring batteries with the bogie pivot cross member, must allow their relative movements in the vertical direction, under the action of the flexibility of the pincer springs, and in no way hinder these movements. This device must likewise be established in such a way that these relative movements in the vertical direction cannot generate relative movements in a plane perpendicular to. the longitudinal axis of the bogies which are liable, whether it be small shocks or sliding, to be perceived by passengers.

   The simplest method of establishing this connection is, in fact, when there is a cross member of the bed base and a cross member of the pivot, to install a system of stops, on one as on the other. To prevent friction

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 likely to occur between the stops, when they come into contact, cannot interfere with the action of the springs, and only the shocks which would occur when they come into contact, if there was normally a play between the stops carried by the bed cross member and the pivot cross member, so that the friction which has just been discussed can only occur exceptionally, does not have repercussions as far as the body, we can conceive the constitution of the stops in question by a system of rollers rolling on slides,

   the rollers and the slides being carried respectively by the bed cross member and the pivot cross member or vice versa.

   These devices, where can come into contact, or where are in permanent contact, the elements carried, some by the cross member of the bed base which is directly connected to the frame of the bogie, and the others by the cross member of the pivot which is , it, directly connected to the body, can have the drawback that the small vibrations due to the unevenness of the tracks to which the bogie frames are subjected and which may not be completely damped by the suspension of these frames on the boxes. oil, do not then receive the additional damping provided by the suspension springs of the pivot cross member, if these contacts did not exist or did not occur.,
These small tremors could then have repercussions all the way to the cash register,

   to the detriment of passenger comfort.

   To avoid this inconvenience, at the link. with a connection of the type mentioned above, it will be preferable, when possible, to connect the pivot cross member and the bed base cross member by a system of

 rods articulated at their ends, on the one hand to the bed cross member, on the other hand to the cross member of the pivot; this double articulation having the effect of preventing the trepidations from being transmitted from the bed base cross member to the pivot cross member.

   The inclination of these links to the horizontal, empty body, and their length must be determined in such a way that, for the vertical displacement of the pivot cross member with respect to the cross member of the bed base corresponding to the load flattening of the springs of the pivot cross member suspension, the relative displacement of the pivot cross member in relation to the base cross member in the longitudinal direction of these parts, that is to say in the perpendicular direction in the direction of travel of the material, is extremely reduced.

   This will prevent the vertical movements which occur under the influence of the springs of the suspension, when the equipment is in service, from generating transverse movements of the body of sufficient magnitude to be perceptible. to travelers.

   It is a device of the same type that will be used when it is the seats of the pincer springs that will have to be connected to the pivot cross member, but in this case, the device will necessarily include a double system of rods, since it will be necessary to connect each of the spring seats through the pivot cross-piece.

   The connecting devices discussed above apply with the same interest to bogies where the suspension of the pivot cross member is achieved in other ways and, for example, by means of helical springs whose tendency to. tilting on their seat is less than that of springs with tweezers, but which are more susceptible to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 able to deform laterally under the effect of transverse forces and which are more sensitive to these deformations.

   In bogies where the leaf springs of the pivot cross member suspension are arranged parallel to the side members and where they are carried off the bogie frame, by means of a pendulum suspension, these springs are less susceptible than springs with blades arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bogie to tilt on their supports, under the influence of the transverse forces to which they are subjected when the material passes through curves.

   They may, however, tend to do so, and this tendency is even more accentuated in bogies where these springs are not carried pendularly from the bogie frame, under the influence of the torque resulting from the fact that there is a certain vertical distance. between the support points of these springs and the upper face of their flange, where they are connected to the pivot cross member and where the point of application of the transverse forces is located.

   It can therefore be seen that there is an advantage in embedding this flange as deeply as possible, and with as little play as possible in the yoke which surmounts it, to counterbalance, by this embedding, the torque likely to cause the tilting of the leaf springs on their seats and possibly a torsion of their leaves. It is even possible to achieve complete fitting by closing the yoke which surmounts this spring by means of a flange placed under the leaf spring, and by connecting this fitting device to the pivot cross member by a connecting rod. arranged like the rods in question above.

   We may also have an interest in carrying out a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 connection between the lower part of the flange or even an extension thereof downwards, and the pivot cross member, by an articulated link, to reduce the length of the torque arm referred to above, or even get to cancel it completely.

   It is even conceivable, when the springs are held in place on their seats, by means of pins sliding in longitudinally ovalized holes, made at the ends of the master leaves of these springs, the advantage that there may be. having to make a connection between the two seats of the spring by means of a device which would be, in its middle, connected to the pivot cross member by links articulated at each of their ends.

  This device would then play the role of the bed cross member, but would be arranged perpendicular to the pivot cross member and could, at the same time, be used to help form a safety device preventing, in the event of breakage, the spring leaves falling out of the way.

   The benefit of connecting the cross members which carry the longitudinal pincer springs in the bogies where the suspension of the pivot cross member is formed by pincer springs arranged parallel to the longitudinal members will also be appreciated.

   The subject of the invention is also a transverse connection system between the seats and the yokes of the helical springs, intended to transmit the load of the body of a two-axle car to the longitudinal suspension springs in a quarter-ellipse of the truck. This connection system may comprise transverse connecting rods articulated, on the one hand, to the seats of the helical springs and, on the other hand, to a central support integral with the body carrying the yokes of the helical springs.

    @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 In general, one could also use all the transverse connection systems referred to above for the bogies, the body of the two-axle car then playing the role of the pivot cross member of the bogie. Instead of the suspension of the seats of the coil springs by the quarter-elliptical springs being carried out by means of rods passing inside these springs and of suitable ball joints, this suspension can preferably be effected. by means of articulated links joining the seats of the helical springs to parts bearing on the ends of the springs in a quarter-ellipse;

   the articulation axes of these connecting rods will then carry nuts and tightening springs which will make it possible to adjust the friction intended to slow the lateral movements of the body with respect to the truek.

  In this case, it is also possible, to add to this braking action due to friction, to give an initial inclination to the rods made possible by the transverse connection.

   Some embodiments have been shown, by way of examples, in the appended drawing, in which:

 Figure 13 is a longitudinal elevation corresponding to Figure 12.

   In Figures 1 and 2, the pivot cross member is indicated at 1 and the double bed frame cross member at 2; to prevent the tweezer springs from rolling, the play of the relative transverse displacement of the pivot cross member with respect to the bed cross member is limited by fixing to this pivot cross member two guides 3 forming stops and acting as a opposite directions on rollers 4 carried by the bed cross member by means of a pin 5 and nuts 6;

   each of these guides comprises, in the example shown, two vertical branches joined together by a spacer 7 forming one body with them and each branch ends downwards in a part 8 whose vertical flat surface can rest transversely against the corresponding roller and slide freely in the vertical direction ,, to allow free play of the pincer springs interposed between the pivot cross member and the bed cross member.

   In Figures 3 and 4, the pivot cross member is still indicated at 1, the bed cross member at 2, one of the two guides at 3 and its flat guide surface at 8, but this surface no longer acts on rollers, but only on a fixed part 9 carried by the cross member 2; in this embodiment, the guide shown is integral with the pivot cross member or is attached to it. 10 indicates a pincer spring, the upper flange 11 of which is surmounted by a yoke which is connected by a link 12 to the pivot cross member and supports the latter by means of the helical spring 13, while the lower flange 14 rests on a support 15 carried by the bed cross member;

   the result obtained by this device is analogous to that obtained by the device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

   In Figure 5, the bed cross member 2 is joined to the pivot cross member 1 by a system of links 16 articulated at their ends, on the one hand, to the bed base cross member, on the other hand, to the pivot cross member ; This double articulation has the effect of preventing the tremors from being transmitted from the bed cross member to the pivot cross member and the inclination of the connecting rods 16 to the horizontal, empty body, and their length must be determined as shown above.

   In Figures 6 and 7, the pivot cross member is still indicated at 1 and its load is transmitted to the side members 17 by means of the pincer springs 10, the supports 18 carrying their lower flanges 14, articulated links 19 and middle rails 20; the side members 17 in turn rest on the longitudinal load cross members 21, by means of helical springs 22 which support the yokes 23 integral with the side members and rest on seats 24 integral with the load cross members.

   In this type of bogie suspension, the guide which forms the subject of the invention is constituted by a part 25 forming one integral with the pivot cross member and joined to the two supports 18 by articulated links 26 forming one integral with these supports and more or less horizontal, so that these links allow vertical displacement, but not transverse, of the pivot cross member 1, with respect to the supports 18, that is to say allow free compression in the vertical direction springs and prevent rolling of these springs.

   In Figures 8 and 9, the pivot cross member is indicated at 1 and rests on the upper flanges of semi-elliptical springs 27 by means of helical springs 28 which support yokes 29 integral with the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 pivot cross member 1 and rest on seats 30 joined to the pivot cross member by articulated links 31; the semi-elliptical springs 27 rest at their two ends on seats 32 carried by the side members of the box by means of articulated links 33. In accordance with the invention, the rolling of the springs 27 is avoided. ensuring them, in their upper flanges, a complete encasment by means of parts 30, on the one hand and., on the other hand, parts 34 fixed to parts 30 by bolts and nuts.

   In the case of FIG. 7, the connection between the upper flange of each spring 27 and the cross member 1 is made in the vicinity of this cross member by connecting rods 31 which are intended to drive the corresponding spring 27 transversely, during transverse movements. cross member 1; as the spring 27 in turn drives its seats 32 placed lower than the rod 31, we see that this drive subjects the spring 27 to a torque tending to tilt its axial plane. This torque can be avoided with the arrangement of the Figure 8, according to which the rods 31 are arranged at the level of the seats 32.

   In Figures 10 and 11; the load of the pivot cross member is transmitted to the side members as in Figures 8 and 9.

  The leaf springs 27 are held in place on their seats 32 by means of pins 35 sliding in longitudinally ovalized holes made at the ends of the master leaves of these springs; the two seats 32 of each spring are connected by a longitudinal bar 36 and the bars 36 are embedded at the ends of a cross member 37 connected to the pivot cross member 1 by rods 38 hinged at one of their ends on a support 39 integral with the pivot cross member 1 and to. the other on a support

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 40 integral with the cross member 37.

   The device shown in FIGS. 12 and 13 shows a system of transverse connection between the body 41 and the seats 42 of the helical springs 43 transmitting the load of the body to the ends of the longitudinal quarter-ellipse springs 44. This connection is ensured. by transverse connecting rods 45 articulated, on the one hand, around axes 46 on the seats 42 and, on the other hand, around an axis 47 on a central support .48 integral with the case 41.

   The suspension of a seat 42 by the quarter-elliptical spring 44 is ensured by rods 49; link 49 is articulated at its lower end around an axis 50 on the corresponding seat 42 and, at its upper end, on a part 51 around an axis 52. The part 51 rests on spring 44 by a spherical surface 53 forming a ball joint and it is held in position on the spring 44 by means of a bolt 54 engaged in an eye 55 of the spring. The yoke 56 of the helical spring fixed to the body frame is arranged in such a way that it cannot abut against the part 51 and the connecting rods 49, neither during transverse movements, nor during vertical movements of the body. the body compared to the truck.

   Each seat 42 supports the corresponding spring 43 by means of a part 57 resting on this seat 42 by a cylindrical surface 58 forming an articulation. The rods 49, from which this seat 42 is suspended, can only rotate around the axis 50 by overcoming friction forces against the plates 59 which are clamped against these rods under the action of the spring 60 surrounding the. axis 50 and held in tension by nut 61 which is screwed on to the end of axis 50.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

   The yoke 56 and the part 57 carry stops 62 and 63 inside the spring 43; these stops are intended to center the helical spring 43 and they could moreover be extended so as to come into contact a little before the spring comes to block, which would thus eliminate a cause of rupture of this spring; one could also give these stops a length calculated so that the helical spring is put out of action from a certain load, so as to produce a suspension device with variable flexibility.
