AUTONMATIC SIGNALING DEVICE
In Belgian patent 372681, there is described a device for automatically signaling the arrival of trains at the level pagging, causing an alarm signal when the convoy is at a certain distance from the level crossing, and causing this signal to cease when the last axle has passed said passage.
The invention which is the subject of the patent application is aimed at a device making it possible, as a replacement for the alarm signal and after this, to cause a free passage signal to appear.
As an example of execution, the device consists essentially of a relay with 2 windings and is shown schematically in the accompanying drawing.
1 and 2 are isolated channel leader circuits; 3 is a limit resistor and 4 is a track transformer. 5 is a rail contact established in the immediate vicinity of the X / Y road. The locking relay is shown at 6; 7 is the heating filament, 8 the heating chamber 9 designates the column of this chamber, while 10 is the contact immersed in mercury 11. 12 is a resistor, 13 and 14 the two windings of a relay acting on the same frame 15, which frame switches a lever 16
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
auto = of an axis 17. Two mercury switches 18 and 19 in the opposite position are inserted in the circuits of the alarm lamps 21 and free passage 20.
The operation is as follows
When a convoy arrives at 1, the winding 14 being connected, the armature 15 falls, the contact
18 closes and the alarm lamp 20 burns; when the last axle has left the leader of track circuit 1, the winding 14 is energized again, but does not have sufficient pulling power to attract the armature 15, so that nothing is not changed.
When the convoy crosses the road and the rail contact 5, the heating circuit 7 closes, the mercury is pushed from the column into the outer chamber, but as explained in detail in pge 372,681, no modification contact does not occur at this time; it is only when the last axle has crossed the contact 5 that the excitation 7 ceasing to be supplied, the mercury is sucked into the column and the contacts 10 and II break; the winding 13 being no longer cuort-cirui and powered at that time, attracts the armature 15; the lever rocks, the contact 18 opens, the alarm lamp 21 goes out while the contact 19 closes and turns on the light 20 of free passage.
When the convoy crosses the start of track circuit 2, the winding 14 is again de-energized, but the winding 13 is sufficient to keep the armature 15 attracted.
As is known from the description of Belgian patent 372,681, after a certain time, the contacts 10 and 11 close again; under these conditions, the winding 13 is de-energized, but the armature having been attracted previously, it suffices to maintain it, which is achieved by the winding! 4; the. status quo ante is therefore restored and all the device is ready

to act for an engagement coming either from one direction or the other.
In another embodiment, instead of using two windings with a common magnetic axis, one could also use two separate relays.
