 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  PATENT D 1 1 N V E N T 1 0 N "Improvements to tires."

   The present invention relates to improvements made to pneumatic tires with the aim of preventing the latter from being completely depressed as a result of accidental communication with the outside, such as is currently the result of punctures. .

   Numerous means have already been proposed for this purpose, however none seems to have been applied industrially at the present time. These means are of various kinds, but it seems that their efficiency has proved inoperative in practice, in particular because this means does not prevent the free flow of pressurized air in the air chamber towards the air. outside.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The present invention relates to means capable of overcoming this drawback and ipso facto of ensuring sufficient pressure in the air chamber to keep the tire in service, at least temporarily.

   This means consists substantially in dividing the air chamber of the tire and in providing each of these compartments with an individual valve ensuring perfect sealing. of the various compartments, especially when one or more of these are put into communication with the outside. It is understandable that under such conditions, one or more compartments being depressed, the others will be sufficient to assure themselves satisfactory support of the vehicle at least for a certain time.

   The subdivision of the inner tube of the tire as well as the design and arrangement of the individual valves are susceptible to very many variations, so that it is possible to envisage the application of said means to all types of tire. taking rigorous account of the conditions of manufacture, work performance, the size of the vehicles to be fitted, etc.

   The compartmentalisation can be carried out simultaneously in the tire itself (outer casing) and the inner tube, or else only in the latter.

   In the first alternative, use will be made of a plurality of air chambers, assigning one to each of the compartments of the outer casing of the tire.

  The individual valves will preferably open into a common duct from which the pumping duct will emerge, ie the element to which the inflation pump is connected.

   In the other alternative, the common air chamber could be compartmentalized by internal membranes arranged in principle in any way. Also, a simple execution consists in introducing into the common air chamber a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 second chamber of smaller dimensions, but also taric.

   Thus, a very large number of executions which are notoriously different in their shape can be provided, although they all take advantage of the means oonforme to the present invention.
In order to make the scope of this means clearly understood, embodiments, given purely by way of example, will be described in more detail below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

   FIG. 1 is a partial median section through a pneumatic tire compartmentalized both in its outer casing and in the air chamber, FIG. 2 is a radial section through a tire presenting two individual toric air chambers, FIG. 3 is a partial median section through the device of FIG. 2, FIGS. 4 and 5 represent in radial section variant embodiments of the compartmentalisation of the air chambers.

   According to Figure 1, it should be noted that the embodiment consists of compartmentalization of the outer casing 1 of the tire, for example, by walls 2, arranged radially.

  The compartments 3 thus created are preferably symmetrical and each comprise an individual air chamber 4, substantially spherical, for example. Each of these chambers 4 include a valve 5 opening into a common annular duct 6, concentric with the tire. Into this common duct 6 also opens a tubing 7 normally closed by a threaded plug 8, and the purpose of which is to allow the fixing of the pumping member for the inflation of the tire.

   It should be noted that by this arrangement, it is possible to proceed in a single operation, strictly similar to that currently required, to inflate simultaneously and in a regular and progressive manner all the individual air chambers 4. D 'on the other hand, in the event of an untimely communication of one or more of said rooms 4 with the former

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 interior, following punctures for example, these chambers being perfectly isolated from the others, these were sufficient to support the vehicle in satisfactory conditions, at least temporarily. Thus, the repair can be delayed and the annoyance which results from punctures in the tire currently used is systematically avoided.

   Instead of compartmentalizing the outer envelope of the tire, it may be considered advantageous to maintain this part of the tire its current shapes and characteristics and to postpone the means in accordance with the invention. only on the home-to-air. For this purpose, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, it will be easy to have. inside the common air chamber 9, a second chamber also toroidal 10, but the section must have a diameter smaller than that of the first. These two chambers could be joined together in their end parts, ie, for example, by gluing to the right of the end generator 11.

   Each of the chambers 9 and 10 comprise an individual valve 12 and 13, opening into a small common chamber 14, onto which the tubing 15 is grafted, forming the connection of the pumping device. Normally, this tubing 15 is also capped with an obturating cap 16.

   This arrangement makes it possible to obtain the same advantages as those indicated in the previous execution, given that when one of the air chambers 9 or 10 is placed in communication with the outside, the second chamber, kept strictly sealed, and with the exterior and with the first chamber, will be sufficient to support the vehicle, and the pressurized air contained therein, will also suffice, by its expansion, to keep the tire its shape normal or approximately normal.

   The subdivision can be achieved in an even simpler way by placing in the common air chamber 17 (Figures 4 and 5) one or more membranes 18, stretched or loose, dis-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 posed and fixed in any way. In the illustrated examples, this membrane is respectively arranged horizontally and vertically. The only precaution to be taken is to arrange the valves judiciously so as to ensure total independence between the various compartments thus created.

   It should be noted that in all these executions the individual valve ensures not only the entry of the inflation air, but also that it systematically opposes the exit of this air during the depression of one. of the tire chambers.

   Also, in these different executions, it has been observed to allow the inflation of all the individual chambers by a single operation. It is understood that provision could be made to keep the various valves strictly independent of each other, by providing a number of pump inlet pipes equal to that of the individual chambers.
