<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

equally and without excessive effort in mountainous regions, by means of changes of speed; it should be added that the device according to the invention does not significantly increase the weight.
The appended drawing represents an execution of the device according to the invention given by way of example, ie: the. fig. 1, shows the front side of the central part of a cycle on which a three-speed gearshift is mounted.
The figure is a side view of fig.l. Fig. 3 represents a little enlarged section passing through the axes of the shift shafts. FIG. 4 is a view similar to that of FIG. 3, relating to the change at two speeds.
In the figures, B is the boot of the change connected to the lower ends of the tubes 0, o1et o2du chassis by means of an angular plate A, carrying the connections A1, A2, and A3, for these tubes; the ends of the tubes being attached to said fittings. The Z bolts fix the plate A to the box B The latter will be made with any light metal or even sheet iron or malleable cast iron etc. When using the angular plate A, it can be obtained melted with the connections A1 A2 and A3, in a single piece.
On the side walls of the boot B are mounted the shafts (main) and H (secondary) of the change. The arbarian C is also the crankshaft C1, C2, A 'one end of the shaft C is mounted loose a sleeve D2 which partly advances into the box B. On the outer end of the sleeve D2 is wedged the chain wheel D which with its chain transmits the movement to the corresponding chain wheel, integral with the cycle wheel.
On the part advanced in the boot B, the sleeve D2 has a gear S still associated with the corresponding gear H1 set on the secondary shaft H. The inner end of the sleeve D2 is notched with teeth D1.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 on the shaft C is mounted so as to be able to slide longitudinally but not to rotate, a sleeve on which are wedged two gears E and F which with the movement of the same sleeve actuated respectively the gears H2w and H3 wedged on the secondary shaft H or even, in fault, there is the idle rotation of the shaft C. The sleeve on which the gears E and F are wedged carries

has its end turned towards the teeth D of the sleeve D2 of the chain wheel D the teeth E1 which engage with the teeth D1 to obtain direct transmission or maximum speed.
According to fig.3, we have the second speed or the internal speed, on the contrary when the gear F activates the H2on gear at the lowest speed.
It is easy to understand that with the elimination of the gear H2 on H3 and in accordance with one of the gearings E or F it will be possible to have a change at two speeds only.
In fact, for the two-speed change, we have the device shown in FIG. 4: here we see two pairs of gears S-H1 and S-H2 always engaged. In this case on the shaft C is mounted a sleeve M sliding but not rotating on this shaft; the sleeve M has notched at its ends the teeth M1 and M2 which can be engaged at will respectively with the teeth D1 of the sleeve D2 of the chain wheel D, or the teeth
E1 of the gear E. When the teeth D1 are engaged with the teeth M1 there is direct transmission while with the engagement of the teeth M2W with
E1 we have reduced speed.
The figg. 3 and 4 show a key C3 lon = gitudinal fixed to the shaft C which engages in a longitudinal groove of the sleeve of the gears E, F (figg. 1 to 3) or of the sleeve M (fig.4).
The movements of the gear unit E, F and of the sleeve M are controlled by the small fork L carried by the end of an oscil = lant P3 lever wedged at the advanced end in the boot B, of a supported shaft suitably (figg. 1 and 2). At the end of this tree which advances to. the outside of the boot B is attached a small lever P2 connected at its end to the end of a rod B1 the other end of the latter being con = nexed untied with the small arm P of a pivoted PP angular lever in R on tube 0 of the chassis.
The other free end of the lever P has a handle I to carry it to divisions 1, 2 and 3 indicated by fig.2 which correspond to the first, second and third gear. The free end of the lever
P is flexible to engage it in the grooves T of the guide W fixed to the tube 0. Naturally we can choose different means for the same purpose, and for the shape and placement of the organs of the device we can have changes in going out. the substance of the invention: ainsipar. ex. the change can be arranged by a greater number of speeds.
