<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Internal combustion engine"
The present invention relates to a multicylinder internal combustion engine in which the movement of the pistons is transmitted to the shaft by means of connecting rods and a cam replacing the usual crankshaft, an arrangement which makes it possible to better use the force of the pistons. pistons at the start of the driving stroke by making it act immediately on a lever arm larger than is possible with a crankshaft.
According to the invention, the connecting rods of the pistons articulated to them in the usual way, are guided at the other end concentrically to the motor shaft and engage the cam at an intermediate point of their length, outside the line. passing through the center of the tree and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
center of the piston joint. This eccentric attack on the cam by the connecting rods gives the possibility of acting on large lever arms formed by the bosses of the cane, while the guiding of the connecting rods concentrically to the shaft avoids lateral cantilever forces. on the connecting rods and on the other hand allows, to a certain extent, to keep substantially constant during the stroke of the piston the length of the lever arm by which the connecting rod actuates the motor shaft.
In one embodiment of the invention, the ends of the connecting rods of the various pistons of the engine are articulated on a common guide member, such as a disc mounted idle on the engine shaft. This shaft carries, wedged on it, a cam on which roll rollers mounted on the connecting rods of the pistons, which rollers can be guided by a groove or a rib of the cam so as to serve both to transmit the thrust to the cam. pistons during the driving times thereof, and for actuating the pistons from the cam during their non-driving times.
The appended drawing shows schematically, by way of example, an engine established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 1 is a cross section of the engine, taken by the line I-I of FIG. 1, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the line II-II of FIG. 1.
1 designates the drum-shaped motor casing on which are mounted four cylinders 2 arranged in a star shape not radially but tangentially with respect to the shaft 3 of the motor. This shaft 3, supported in the axis of the housing
1 by the flanges 4 of the latter, carries an idle disc 5 to which n
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are articulated in 6, equidistant from each other, the ends of connecting rods 7 articulated on the other hand in 8 to the pistons 9 housed in the cylinders 2. Towards the middle of their length, the connecting rods 7 each carry two rollers 10, 11 mounted on a common pivot 12. The rollers 10 roll on a quadrangular cam 13 with rounded angles, wedged on the shaft 3. The rollers 11 are engaged in a guide groove 14 matching the profile of the cam and formed in a cylindrical flywheel 15 which is integral with the cam.
It will be understood that the stroke of the pistons 9 is equal to the difference between the radii of the cam passing through an angle and through the middle of one side thereof, respectively.
The pistons are shown approximately halfway through their cylinders. Gn has shown in the drawing, in phantom lines, the position of the piston of the right cylinder and that of the corresponding boss of the cam, at the start of the driving stroke of this piston, the figures 6 ', 8' 10 'respectively indicating the corresponding positions of the two ends 6, 8 and of the roller 10 of the connecting rod. It is clear that from the start of the driving stroke, the thrust of the piston is transmitted to the shaft 3 by a large lever arm L measured between the center of the roller 10 and the radius R of the shaft, parallel to the cylinder axis. Until approximately the middle of the driving stroke of the piston, this lever arm increases slightly in length as a result of the rotation of the guide disc 5 which has the effect of moving the foot of the connecting rod away from the shaft.
This lengthening of the lever arm is advantageous given that it occurs in the direction of rotation of the cam by exerting an accelerating thrust on the latter. Beyond the middle of the driving stroke, the length of the lever arm decreases in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the same amount it had increased, which is irrelevant since this part of the stroke corresponds to the expansion of the gases in the cylinder and does not have the same motor value as the start of the stroke. In fact, the lengthening and shortening of the lever arm is minimal and it can be said that the length of the lever arm remains practically constant throughout the driving stroke.
The movements of the pistons during non-driving times are controlled by the groove 14 of the cam, by means of the rollers 11 and of the connecting rods 7. Thanks to the guiding of the connecting rod smallest parts provided by the disc 5, there does not occur at any time. Significant lateral forces on the connecting rods, and the lateral forces on the pistons are much less than with the usual crankshaft drive system.
Of course, the shape of the cam 13 shown in the drawing is only schematic and ', given only by way of example. Instead of being quadrangular, this shape can be triangular or the like, the sides of the cam can be curved in different ways and many other modifications can be made as needed, especially depending on the number of cylinders in the engine.
The articulated connection of the connecting rod legs to the guide disc 5 can be adjustable in position if desired, for example by means of a circular arc slide and a locking screw, or else it is possible to use separate guides, such as cranks, for each connecting rod or group of connecting rods.
It is also easily understood that the engine can be made rotary by having a fixed cam and a rotating cylinder block.

In general, the invention is not limited to the forms and details of execution described and shown by way of example, and it would not be departing from its scope to modify them.
