   Rendement =70 g d'hydrate de magnésium = 47 g de magnésie.

  Rendement = 50 g d'hydrate de magnésium = 30 g de magnésie.

  "Process for the preparation of magnesia and nitrogenous fertilizers from dolomite."
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of magnesia and nitrogen fertilizers from dolomite, and it relates to an improvement to the known processes for this purpose, which all make it necessary to calcine the dolomite in whole or in part. part, as well as an extinction and a sieving of this one to obtain a magnesia sufficiently poor in lime.

   The artificial preparation of pure magnesia is of particular importance for the reason that the natural deposits worthy of exploitation of pure magnesite are of a locally very limited nature and are generally also very remote. industry likely to use them.

   According to known methods for the artificial preparation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 From the raw materials everywhere present, in particular from the double carbonate of lime and magnesia, or dolomite, it has only recently been possible to obtain products which can be used in a somewhat technical and economical manner. , in that one collected, beside magnesia, nitrate of lime. The operation was as follows: one dissolved the dolomite in nitric acid and one precipitated the magnesia by means of dolomite milk, or one calcined the dolomite, it was extinguished and the lime was then separated, by means of nitric acid, from the magnesia.

   But all the known processes involve, as already mentioned, a calcination, a quenching and a sieving of the dolomite, when one wishes to obtain as final product a magnesia sufficiently low in lime.

   The process according to the invention obviates these difficulties and consists in dissolving the dolomite in nitric acid, precipitating the magnesia with ammonia, the precipitate is separated by filtration and the ammoniacal filtrate is converted into fertilizer by evaporation or by treatment with carbonic acid. This process is based on the observation @ over-

 taking that the magnesia, completely and free of lime, is precipitated by means of ammonia. from a solution of dolomite in nitric acid, and it further converts the filtrate in a very advantageous manner into a nitrogenous fertilizer of high value.

   It was hitherto believed that saline solutions of magnesium can only be precipitated incompletely by ammonia, in that soluble salts of ammonium-magnesium are formed in addition to magnesium hydrate. ., In the presence of ammonium salts, it precipitates, as is known, absolutely no magnesium hydrate.For pure solutions of magnesium chloride or magnesium sulphate, one can, using

 70-80% magnesium.

   It could not therefore be expected that for a solution of dolomite in acid to be found neither magnesia / in the form of magnesium nitrate and furthermore still in the presence of calcium nitrate , the addition of ammonia will precipitate any amount of magnesium hydrate and, in the case of an excess of ammonia, complete precipitation of magnesium hydrate. ium.

   According to the invention, it is now possible to obtain magnesia and nitrogenous fertilizers in a considerably simpler manner than heretofore and without calcination of dolomite.

   The examples below show in detail the implementation of the new process and the products obtained by it.

   Example 1. - 250 g of crude dolomite, with a content of 34% CaO and 18% MgO, as carbonates, are dissolved in 750 cm3 of nitric acid @ 1.23 and, with stirring and cooling. 90 g of ammonia gas are fed in. The precipitated magnesium hydrate is filtered off, washed, dried and, if desired, red hot converted to magnesia.

   Yield = 70 g of magnesium hydrate = 47 g of magnesia.

   The filtrate, which contains lime in the form of calcium nitrate and in addition ammonium nitrate and free ammonia, can be directly evaporated, with recovery of the free ammonia, by heating to 140. , which amounts to 460 g, solidifies on cooling to a crystalline mass, which consists of 35% ammonium nitrate and 65% Ca (AzO3) 2.

  2aq, ie lime nitrate with 35% ammonium nitrate.

   In addition, the ammoniacal filtrate separated from the magnesium hydrate can advantageously be treated in a known manner with carbonic acid, which is formed when the crude dolomite is dissolved in nitric acid. then forms

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 calcium carbonate and ammonium nitrate, which can be brought together to dryness or obtained separately by filtration. The known nitrate of lime and ammonium nitrate is then obtained as a fertilizer, and in particular in the example mentioned, with a yield 150 g of calcium carbonate (free of MgO) and 410 g of ammonium nitrate (99.2%), with which the desired mixtures can be easily prepared.

   It is of course also possible, by the addition of smaller quantities of ammonia, to prepare nitrogenous fertilizers in addition to magnesia which contain, besides calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate, also magnesium nitrate, as the following example shows:
Example 2-250 g of crude dolomite are dissolved in 750 cm3 of nitric acid and 45 g of ammonia are brought in while stirring and cooling, or 185 cm3 of ammonia (25%) are added.

  The precipitated magnesium hydrate is filtered off, dried and heated red.

  Yield = 50 g of magnesium hydrate = 30 g of magnesia.

   The ammoniacal filtrate is evaporated at 1400, which solidifies on cooling and stirring into crystalline granules. yield = 430 g with 56.9% of Ca (AzO3) 2
12.7% of Mg (AzO3) 2
 EMI4.1
 36, 4 a of A.zx4.Az03.

   It is of course also possible, by determining the quantity of ammonia, to obtain any desired content of magnesia in the fertilizer. There is no difficulty in carrying out the present process technically. It is only necessary to ensure that the temperature , when introducing ammonia, is kept as much as possible below 30, otherwise the filtration of the magnesium hydrate is adversely affected.

   It is possible, according to the preceding process, to obtain magnesia not only free of lime, but also poor in iron, or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 first iron hydrate, which can be removed by filtration before subsequent introduction of ammonia. It is also possible, by treating the solution of crude dolomite in nitric acid with crushed crude dolomite, to obtain magnesia in a very low iron state.

   The invention is not limited to the method described above in detail and explained in the examples, but many modifications can be made to it without departing from its scope.
