"PROCESS FOR PURIFICATION OF FUSION METAL LOADS"
With the usual purification processes known hitherto, en has not yet succeeded in ridding the charges of molten metal of certain impurities. Thus, for example, it has not yet been possible to economically rid copper of selenium by means of high temperature smelting.

The refining of copper containing selenium is successful, it is true by electrolytic means; however, this process is more expensive than the high temperature refining process and is economical only when it allows the recovery of a precious metal. Since it was impossible until now to rid copper of selenium by refining at high temperature, it was necessary, even in the case of copper not containing precious metals, to resort to the process more

expensive, in order to remove very harmful impurities and make copper usable in general. This also applies to other metals, such as lead, zinc, etc.

By means of the process according to the invention, it is possible to rid the molten metal feedstocks of impurities such as selenium and tellurium, in an economical manner and without making use of electrolysis or expensive leaching processes.

The process according to the invention resides in the fact that the charges of molten metal are treated with the aid of alkali compounds and reducing agents.

It is particularly economical to use sodium carbonate as the alkali compound and carbon as a reducing agent. However, the intended purpose can also be achieved with the aid of other alkaline compounds and other editors.

The chemical reactions which take place in the process according to the invention are very diverse. When treating copper containing selenium: for example, we obtain

cbléniures and f. "'Y1 ..f ..' L" 1 ^; .., which go s. slag, and tooth can extract selenium from it. It is necessary to ensure, by maintaining a reducing or neutral atmosphere, or by eliminating oxidizing factors, that the impurities, once separated from the mass, no longer return to the latter.

 additives and molten metal fillers.

A very advantageous process consists in heating a mixture of soda ash and carbon until sintering and then treating the metal charge in the manner indicated above, by means of this sintered material which is called a conglomerate.
