 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 EMI7.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 EMI8.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 EMI10.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 "Improvements to pressurized fluid brake devices".

   The invention relates to pressurized fluid brake apparatus for railway vehicles and other similar vehicles in which the admission of the pressurized fluid to one or more brake cylinders as well as its exhaust are controlled by the mechanic's valve. or the driver either directly or indirectly by varying the pressure of the brake pipe.

   The invention relates to devices by means of which the braking obtained by the operation of the valve of the mechanic

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 can be adjusted in relation to vehicle speed; this ensures that the braking force exerted will not exceed this.! corresponding to the maximum coefficient of friction between the brake shoes and the wheels for a given speed and the risk of locking the wheels at a certain time during the slowing of the vehicle will thus be avoided.

   In order to bring the vehicle to a halt in the shortest possible time, it is essential that the tangential force exerted on the wheels of the vehicle by the brake shoes remains substantially constant when the speed of rotation varies and to obtain this result it is essential to It is obviously necessary that the pressure of the brake cylinder is constantly adjusted in relation to the coefficient of friction existing during deceleration and therefore mrapport with the speed of the vehicle.

   According to the main feature of the invention, the pressure obtained in the brake cylinder during application of the brakes is automatically adjusted in relation to the speed of the vehicle in such a way that when the brakes have been applied the admission of the fluid under brake cylinder pressure is cut as soon as the pressure established in the brake cylinder corresponds to the maximum tangential force exerted on the wheels of the vehicle by the brake shoes at the speed of rotation of the vehicle when the brakes are applied, while the admission of pressurized fluid to the brake cylinder is renewed in the event of an increase in the speed of rotation of the wheels and, on the contrary, the pressure in the brake cylinder is automatically reduced if the speed of rotation decreases.

   This adjustment of the braking force is carried out without interfering with the application or release of the brakes in a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 lower limit than that required to produce the maximum deceleration in question, so that the mechanic always remains in control of the braking action while nevertheless making it possible to obtain the maximum deceleration without risk of locking the wheels of the vehicle.

   The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagram showing the application of the invention to a pressurized fluid brake apparatus in which the admission of fluid to the brake cylinder and its exhaust are controlled directly by the mechanic's brake valve.

   FIG. 2 is a diagram similar to that of FIG. 1 showing how the invention applies to a brake apparatus in which the braking control is carried out by varying the pressure of the brake pipe under the control of the mechanic's valve .

   In FIG. 1, it can be seen that the apparatus comprises an air compressor 1 of an ordinary model which admits air to the main tank 2 through a pipe 3; a pipe 4 going from the tank 2 to the mechanic's valve 5, the operation of which admits the compressed air from the pipe 4 to a pipe 6 or which puts the pipe 6 in communication with the atmosphere.

  The apparatus of Figure 1 also comprises an adjustment valve 7, a speed controller 8 and a brake cylinder 9 in which compressed air is admitted to effect the tightening of the brake shoes 10 on the wheels 11 by through a wheelhouse.

   The body 12 of the adjustment valve 7 is divided into three compartments 13, 14 and 15 by means of flexible diaphragms 16, 17 connected by a rod 18 which controls a slide 19 arranged in a chamber 15.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   A supply valve 20 supported on its seat by a spring 21 is mounted in the lower part of the body 12 and this valve controls the communication between the chamber 15 and a supply chamber 22 communicating with the pipe 6 via a pipe 23.

   The central chamber 14 of the adjustment valve 7 is in communication by a pipe 24 with the pipe 6, while the lower chamber 15 is in communication with the brake cylinder 9 by a pipe 25. The table 26 of the drawer 19 has a exhaust duct 27 that the slide 19 discovers to establish communication between the chamber 15 and the atmosphere.

   The speed controller 8 can be constituted by an oil or water pump, an air compressor or any other fluid flow control device actuated as indicated by an axle 28 of the vehicle. The pressure developed by the action of the controller 8 is transmitted through a pipe 29 in the upper chamber 13 of the control valve.

   The effective area of the diaphragm 16 of the adjusting valve, as can be seen, is smaller than the effective area of the diaphragm 17 and the lower part of the rod 18 controlling the spool 19 is adjusted so that under certain conditions it attacks the stem 30 of the valve 20 to protrude its opening.

   The operation is as follows:
When the vehicle is running, the speed controller 8 establishes a pressure in the chamber 13 of the adjustment valve 7 which is proportional to the speed of rotation of the axle 26 and therefore to the speed of the vehicle and when the vehicle rolls with the brakes released, the diaphragms 16 and 17 under the action of the pressure obtained in the chamber 13 leave the position shown in the drawing and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 are bent downwards by lowering their rod 18 which attacks the rod 30 of the valve 20 and thus the valve is kept open.

   In working condition, it is understood that the pipe 6 is in communication with the atmosphere through the valve 5 of the mechanic in the released position so that the chamber 14 is at atmospheric pressure and since the valve 20 is open, the cylinder brake 9 is in communication with the chamber 22 which is also in communication with the atmosphere through the pipes 23 and 6.

   When it is desired to apply the brakes, the mechanic turns the valve 5 to cut off the communication between the line 6 and the atmosphere and to establish the communication between the lines 4 and 6. The compressed air is then admitted from the tank 2 into the line. 6 and in the chamber 22 from where it passes through the open valve 20 into the chamber 15 and from there arrives through the line 25 to the brake cylinder!. Compressed air is also admitted from the line 6 through the line 24 to the chamber 14 so that the chambers 14 and 15 are at the pressure obtained in the brake cylinder.

   As the pressure in cylinder 9 increases, the pressure in chamber 14 acting in the opposite direction to the pressure in chamber 13 tends to bend diaphragms 16, 17 upward, allowing valve 20 to close. under the action of the spring 21, but as long as the pressure of the air admitted into the chamber 14 by the valve 5 of the mechanic is insufficient to overcome the opposing pressure of the chamber 13, the valve 20 remains open and the mechanic remains fully master of the pressure of the brake cylinder, because by operating the valve 5 in the ordinary way, he increases or decreases the pressure in the brake cylinder or he can maintain it at the desired value.

   To achieve maximum slowing down of the vehicle, the valve 5 is maintained in its clamping position so as to continuously admit compressed air into the pipe 6 and as soon as the pressure obtained in the chamber 14 exceeds that obtained in the chamber 13 , the diaphragms 16 and 17 are returned to the position shown in Figure 1; valve 20 can then close and it cuts off a new air supply from chamber 15 to brake cylinder 9.

   The value of the brake cylinder pressure at which the compressed air intake ceases obviously depends on the pressure of the chamber 13. This pressure itself depends on the speed of rotation of the axle 28 of the vehicle, because the pressure developed in chamber 13 by the control apparatus for a given speed of rotation of axle 28 has been calculated in such a way that the pressure of the brake cylinder for the speed at which the brake is applied corresponds to l maximum tangential force for slowing down the vehicle due to the coefficient of friction between the brake shoes 10 and the wheels 11 of the vehicle for this speed.

   If the vehicle speed fortuitously increases after the brakes have been applied, the increase in pressure in chamber 13 will cause the diaphragms 16, 17 to deflect downward, which will open valve 20 and allow a new intake of gas. compressed air to the brake cylinder 9 to increase the brake pressure in proportion to the increase in speed.

   However, which is the most frequent case, if the speed decreases following the application of the brakes, the pressure in the chamber 13 will decrease and as a result, the pressure of the brake cylinder obtained in the chamber 15 will cause a sag towards the top of the diaphragms 16,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 EMI8.1
 17 which will start the spool 19 by making it discover the exhaust port 27 and the pressure of the brake cylinder will be reduced as a result of the exhaust of air which will occur through the pipe 25, the chamber 15 and the orifice output 27.

   The pressure of the brake cylinder is reduced until, due to the decrease in pressure in the chamber 15, the diaphragms 16, 17 by bending downwards return to the position shown in the figure and the air can no longer continue to escape from the brake cylinder. This action continues as long as the vehicle speed decreases and thus / all weather, the pressure of the brake cylinder corresponds to that which produces the maximum tangential force for slowing down the speed of the vehicle without locking the wheels.

   While the vehicle is slowing down, as has just been explained, the mechanic can operate the valve 5 to reduce the braking action by establishing communication between the pipe 6 and the atmosphere; this results in a corresponding reduction in the pressure in chamber 14 due to the escape of air through line 24; as a result of this pressure reduction the diaphragms 16, 17 bend downwards and open the valve 20, which allows air to escape from the brake cylinder 9 into the atmosphere under the control of the mechanic by line 25, chamber 15, open valve 20, chamber 22 and lines 23 and 6.

   In the: embodiment of FIG. 2, it can be seen that the supply of pressurized fluid to the brake cylinder 9 and its exhaust are in this case controlled by a triple valve 31 combined with the ordinary auxiliary reservoir 32 and actuated in in relation to the pressure of the brake pipe 33, the pressure in the latter pipe being regulated by the engineer's valve not shown in the drawing. An auxiliary brake cylinder 34 is suitably coupled to the linkage

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 actuated by the brake cylinder 9 and the auxiliary brake cylinder 34 communicates via a pipe 25 with the chamber 15 of the adjustment valve 7.

   The apparatus also comprises a speed controller 8 similar to that shown in Figure 1; it communicates by a pipe 29 with the upper chamber 13 of the adjustment valve 7. A pipe 35 starting from the triple valve 31 communicates by a pipe 36 with the brake cylinder 9 and by a pipe 24 with the chamber 14 of the valve adjustment 7.

   An interruption valve 37 is provided; it comprises an upper chamber 38 communicating with the pipe 35 and this chamber is separated from a chamber 39 by a flexible diaphragm 40; the chamber 39 communicates with the atmosphere through an exhaust hole 41. The diaphragm 40 is connected to the valves 42, 43 which respectively control the communication between the chamber 39 and a chamber 44 on the one hand and on the other hand between this last chamber and a chamber 45 which communicates by a pipe 46 with an additional reservoir 47.

   The reservoir 47 communicates by a pipe 48 with a check valve 49 comprising a check valve 50 supported on its seat by a spring. This valve controls the communication between the line 48 and a line 51 connected to the line 52 of the triple valve 31. The communication between the chamber 44 of the valve 37 and the supply chamber 22 of the control valve 7 is established by a pipeline 23.

   The basis for this mode of execution of the device is as follows:
In operation, the additional tank 47 is charged with compressed air by the general pipe 33 which is admitted to it by the pipe 52, the pipe 51, the open valve 50 of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

      the check valve 49 and the line 48.

   The brake cylinder 9 being at atmospheric pressure, the chamber 38 of the shut-off valve is also at atmospheric pressure; it follows that the valve 43 is kept closed and the valve 42 open under the action of the spring 53 The chamber 44 of the valve 37 and the supply chamber 22 of the regulating valve 7 also communicate with the atmosphere. through the chamber 39 and the exhaust hole 41.

   As long as the vehicle is in motion, the chamber 13 of the regulating valve 7 is maintained at a pressure corresponding to the speed of the vehicle and the valve 20 is kept open as explained in the description of FIG. 1; the auxiliary brake cylinder 34 is in communication with the atmosphere through the pipe 25, the chamber 15 and the supply chamber 22 of the adjustment valve 7.

   To apply the brakes, the pressure of the general pipe 33 is reduced in the ordinary way by operating the mechanic's valve and the compressed air is admitted to the brake cylinder 9 of the auxiliary reservoir 32 through the triple valve 31 The pressure obtained in the brake cylinder 9 is transmitted through the line 35 to the chamber 38 of the shut-off valve 37 and the downwardly bent diaphragm 40 closes the valve 42 and opens it. valve @ 43. The communication between the line 23 and the atmosphere is intercepted by the closing of the valve 42 and the opening of the valve 43 establishes the communication between the additional tank 47 and the line 23 by the 'intermediary of pipe 46 and chamber 45.

   As a result, compressed air is admitted from the additional reservoir 47 to the auxiliary brake cylinder 34 by the following path: shut-off valve 37, line 23, supply chamber 22 of the regulating valve 7, valve 20 open, chamber 15 of control valve 7 and pipe 25.

   It can be seen that the pressure of the chamber 14 which tends to bend the diaphragms 16, 17 upwards corresponds to the pressure obtained in the brake cylinder 9 and it depends on the degree of brake application carried out by the action of the triple valve 31.

   The pressure of the chamber 15 of the adjusting valve 7 tending to bend the diaphragms 16, 17 upwards depends on the pressure obtained in the auxiliary brake cylinder 34 and the air intake to the brake cylinder is regulated by the adjustment valve in the manner previously described in relation to the pressure obtained in the chamber 13 which in turn depends on the speed of the vehicle.

     The total braking force obtained is obviously the sum of the braking forces of the brake cylinders 9 and 34, since the intake of compressed air to the brake cylinder µ and its exhaust is under the direct control of the triple valve 31 while that the additional braking force due to the auxiliary brake cylinder 34 is regulated by the adjustment valve 7, in such a way that it depends on the speed of the vehicle during the application of the brakes.

   When the brakes are released, the air from the brake cylinder 9 escapes into the atmosphere in the ordinary manner through the triple valve and the reduction in pressure in the chamber 38 of the shut-off valve 37 causes the opening of the valve. valve 42, which allows air to escape from auxiliary brake cylinder 34 through the following path: line 25, chamber 15, open valve 20. supply chamber 22, line 23, chambers 44 and 39 and exhaust hole 41.

   While the invention has been described for its application to a compressed air brake apparatus, it is obvious that it can also be applied to brake apparatus acting under the action of a vacuum or a vacuum. It will suffice to bring

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 changes in the construction and devices of the regulating valve and in the pressure regulating device depending on the speed of the vehicle. These modifications can easily be made by those familiar with braking devices and need not be given a special description.

   The invention is not limited to the particular means described for the execution of the various valves and indicated by way of example and modifications can obviously be made without departing from the limits of the invention.
