<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improvements to friction and variable speed transmission devices"
The present invention relates to friction and variable speed transmission devices of the type with toric surface discs, this device comprising a drive disc, a driven disc having the same axis and rollers placed between these discs and capable of rolling on. toroid-shaped raceways. In such transmission devices, the.galets can rotate in supports of such
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
so that each roller is free to rotate around its own axis and to have a precession movement around its precession axis, said precession being initiated by an inclination movement of the roller relative to its contact axis.
For the clarity of the description and of the foregoing, certain expressions used herein will be defined below.
'Roller rotation axis' means the axis around which the roller rotates as it rolls.
"Contact axis" or "axis of inclination of the roller * indicates the axis joining the points of contact of the roller with the discs; * tilting movement" of the roller means the movement of said roller around the aforementioned contact axis ; "Roller precession axis" or "roller support axis" designates the axis around which the roller can rotate at the same time as its support to allow the roller to reach a position corresponding to a change in transmission ratio between the discs. *
It has already been proposed that the axis around which the roller rotates be articulated to the support of said roller in such a way that an initial movement of the support around the precession axis determines the desired tilting movement of the roller around its axis of contact.
The aforementioned articulation can be constituted by a real axis or by a virtual axis formed by means of parts integral with the support itself or by means of parts rigidly fixed to said support in order to aue, either in one case or in the other, the relative movements of the support and the vest are

, this part being constituted by a guide device or fork articulated on said support, such that the movement communicates
That to the said part compared to the support does. tilt the roller and thus control the precession.
It is evident that in all devices in which the tilting motion of the roller is used to initiate the precession, there are only two axes in addition to the axis of rotation of the roller about which the roller can. move without slipping; these two axes are, firstly, the contact axis and, secondly, the precession axis around which the roller support can rotate. According to the invention, to initiate the precession, it suffices to apply pressure to the roller, thanks to the aforementioned guide or fork at any point located outside the contact axis, which causes the roller to tilt around this axis; the roller can obviously be mounted in such a way that it is free to incline relative to the support and to have, at the same time as the latter, a precession movement.
It is further evident that the guide device (or fork) by means of which the inclination of the roller is effected must move in such a direction, with respect to the direction of rotation of the roller, that the resulting precession movement forces the support to follow and / or to catch up with the movement of the guide or the fork so as not to block or interfere with the guide device.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, we will now describe, by way of example only, an embodiment.

another method of positioning the roller pressure application device,
If we refer to the drawing, we will see that 1 and 2 are respectively the two discs having the same axis and provided, on their faces located opposite, with ahnular grooves 3. In these grooves and between the discs are placed rollers whose only one, designated by 4, has been shown in the drawing, the others being identiaues and being placed at suitable intervals from each other in the raceway formed by the groove 3.
The disc 1 is integral with a shaft 5 by means of which it can be communicated, from an external source, unmourement of rotation. This movement is transmitted to the other disc 2 and to its shaft 6 as a result of the frictional contact existing between the two discs on the one hand and the rollers on the other hand, rollers which, although free to rotate, have no no planetary movement around the axis of shafts 5 and 6. As is known, the variation in the speed ratio between the two discs 1 and 2 is obtained by a precession movement of the rollers in the aforementioned grooves, in other words by a automatic movement to a new position of transmission of the rollers, this movement consisting of a rotation of each roller around its precession axis designated by aa in Figures 1 and 2.
The roller 4 is mounted so that it can rotate freely on a hollow journal 7 inside which is fixed a diametral rod 8.
This rod is held between its ends by a. part 9 forming part of a support or frame 10 suspended from the gimbal in such a way that the hollow journal 7 can have a limited angular movement around the axis of the rod 8, axis which coincides with the axis of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
contact bb (figurel) of the roller 4. The support or frame 10 is mounted on the gimbal, thanks to journals 11 placed in fixed retaining parts 12, these parts being part of a set used to hold all the rollers in one appropriate position around the grooves 3. The journals 11 are placed along the precession axis of the roller 4 and can rotate in the parts 12 so that the roller can, together with the frame 10, have a precession movement around of axis aa.
The frame 10 is provided with a device making it possible to control the automatic precession movement of the roller 4 when the discs 1 and 2 are in rotation, this device comprising a pivoting fork 13 which can turn in one end of the frame and provided with an arm 14 by means of which angular movement can be imparted to the fork. The arm 14 can be attached to the fork 13 at any point thereof, but preferably it is attached at a point near the edge of the discs 1 and 2 in order to allow maximum angular movement of the arm between the discs. above. The two branches 15 and 16 of the fork are curved forward from part 17 and in the direction of rotation of roller 4, as can be seen clearly in Figure 1.
In the vicinity of the lower ends of the branches 15 and 16 are provided two rollers or balls 18 'and 19; one or the other of these balls is forced to bear against the vest 4 when the arm 14 is rotated to one side or the other from its normal position in which each of the two balls 18 '. 19 is separated from the roller 4. This rotation of the arm 14 has the effect of tilting or tilting the roller
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ques 1 and 2 turn there immediately occurs an automatic precession movement of the roller 4 in the known manner, This precession has been shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
If. When the discs 1, Z and the roller 4 rotate respectively in the directions indicated by arrows, the arm 14 is moved to the right from the position shown in figure 4 to the position shown in figure 5 , the roller 4 tilts under the action of the branch 16 of the fork 13, around its contact axis bb; under these conditions, the frictional forces acting on the roller oblige the latter to take a precession movement around the axis a-a to the position shown in FIG. 6; in this position, the transmission ratio between dikes 1 and 2 is lower than in the case of the position shown in figure 4.
If the arm 14 is rotated in the opposite direction, the inclination of the roller 4 and the resulting precession. will be done in the opposite direction to that which is shown in figures 4, 5 and 6; This will increase the transmission ratio between discs 1 and 2.
Note that although in Figure 4 the lateral pressure is shown as being applied to roller 4 in a quadrant containing what may be called "lag angles" (i.e. in a quadrant extending in the direction of rotation of the wheel) from the contact axis bb in FIG. 12, the pressure has been represented as being applied in a quadrant containing what can be called the "angles of advance "from the contact axis bb. Contrary to the assumptions made about previous devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
transmission by torus-shaped discs, it is absolutely irrelevant to know in which quadrant of the roller the inclination pressure is applied, provided only that this pressure is not applied at a point of said vest placed along the contact axis bb.
It has been shown that the rod 8 was arranged along the contact axis b-b of the roller; a brief examination shows that this is an essential condition for the functioning of the device; since the roller 4 is held at the point where it makes contact with the discs against any lateral movement, the axis which passes through these points, that is to say the axis bb, is the only axis around which the roller can turn; since the frame 10 and the parts 12 in which the roller 4 is mounted so that it can rotate cannot move around the axis bb, if the roller 4 turns around this axis, it must be is free to rotate around said axis; consequently, the rod 8 which is fixed to the frame 10 is the only axis making it possible to provide this freedom of movement and must therefore be located along the axis b-b.
The rod 8 thus serves as an articulation connecting the roller 4 to the frame 10 and, although this articulation is normally a real part materialized by the rod 8, said articulation could simply be a virtual articulation, that is to say be constituted by an axis around which the roller 4 would be forced to rotate due only to the forces acting externally with respect to said axis. A device in which one of these virtual joints has been provided is shown in Figures 7 and 8; in this device, the roller 4 is a roller which can rotate on a hub 7 '. This hub is mounted on a 9 'shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
with a square section integral with the frame 10 so that the hub 7 'can pivot on said shaft about a virtual axis b'-b' (FIG. 8).
The hub 7 'has for this purpose an opening 19 flared at each of its ends in a plane only as seen in FIG. 7 but having a constant width along its axis, the shaft 9' thus constitutes a kind of journal on which the roller 4 can pivot about its contact axis relative to the support in a manner analogous to that which has been described in the case where said roller can rotate around the rod 8 (case of the device shown on Figure 3), although in the device of Figures 7 and 8 a virtual joint replaces the real joint 8 of Figure 3.
Another articulation device connecting the roller 4 to the frame 10 is shown in Figures 10 and 11. In this device, the vest 4 is mounted, so au'il can rotate, on a ball bearing comprising 22 placed balls. between an inner raceway 23 fixed or keyed to the shaft 92 (the latter being fixed to the frame 10) and an outer raceway 24 fixed to the roller 4 or forming part of it.
Normally such a mounting of the roller on the shaft 92 would leave the roller free to rotate in three directions; in other words, said roller would be free to rotate around the axis c-c (FIG. 10) and it would be free to have a limited angular movement around the two axes 10-10 and b2-b2 (FIG. 11); the freedom of movement around the axis 10-10 can, however, be eliminated by providing on each side of the ball bearing
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
guides 25 which extend, as shown in the fiurell, from the shaft 92 on which they are fixed, to points situated along the contact axis b2-b2 in the vicinity of the contact edge of roller 4. These guides 25 prevent the support frame 10 from moving around the axis of precession relative to the vest 4.
The roller is thus capable of having a limited angular movement around the contact axis b2-b2 and the shaft 92 as well as the ball bearing 22, 23, 24 constitute a kind of journal on which the puck 4 can rotate. around its contact axis in a manner analogous to that which has been described in the case where said roller could pivot in the device shown in Figures 3 and 9 and in Figures 7 and 8.
It will be seen, therefore, that, according to the invention, the movement of the roller 4 is strictly subordinate to the movement of the guide device or fork 13 and @ is caused in an easy to understand manner by a simple but effective combination comprising essentially three elements, namely the roller holder, the roller mounted in the aforementioned support so that it can tilt relative to the latter and the member for guiding and controlling the roller pivotably mounted on the support in question.
Various modifications could be made in the device described and shown without the general economy of the invention being thereby impaired. It is thus, for example, that the retaining edges 20 of the hub 7 or that the corresponding edges 20 'of the hub 7' can extend to the vicinity of the periphery of the roller 4 (precautions being taken
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
nes when the roller 4 has tilted), so that the lower ends of the branches 15 and 16 of the fork 13 can exert pressure on the flanges 20 (or 20 ') instead of exerting it on the roller itself. even; in this way, the frictional or rolling contact between the fork and the roller can be eliminated.
In addition, it is obvious that the fork 13 can be arranged in such a way that it can rotate in a plane parallel to the plane of the discs 1 and 2, so that one of its two branches (which, in this case, will be straight , either forced to come into contact with the roller 4 or with the rim 20 or 20 '.
Any suitable connecting device can be used to connect the end 21 of the arm 14 to members serving to control the device intended to modify the transmission ratio; if desired, the control device can be hydraulic. It is obvious that such a control device serves to simultaneously adjust the positions (corresponding to the different transmission ratios) of all the rollers of the series of rollers placed between the discs 1 and 2, so that no blockage of the transmission. cannot occur as a result of the birth of antagonistic forces in the mechanism.
