 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     L'observation microscopique des soies artificielles de viscose à brins tubulaires ainsi obtenues avec faible parcours dans le bain de filature montre que par ce moyen on obtient en outre une largeur beaucoup plus uniforme des brins.

  Artificial textiles with tubular fibers.

   In French Patent No. 509,723 of May 13, 1919, a process for manufacturing artificial textiles containing gas bubbles has been described, starting from cellulosic or other solutions that hold emulsified gases. This process for the manufacture of porous textiles has received many improvements successively described in French patents n 542,243 of October 12, 1921, n 542,303 of October 13, 1921, n 577,369 of April 13, 1923, n 614,029 of March 5, 1926, n 623,970. of November 2, 1926, n 653.337 of April 23, 1928, and n 662,443 of October 17, 1928, and whose main result was the obtaining of tubular strands, more or less swollen.

  These strands have in section the appearance shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing. In longitudinal view, they are in the form of striated blades (figure 2).

   It sometimes happens, however, that on the longitudinal view we observe pronounced transverse striations

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 which, on microscopic examination, appear as partitions dividing the tube into sections, hence the name "partitioned" given to this defect (figure 3).

   In French patents n 577,369 of April 15, 1923 and n 614,029 of March 5, 1926, certain conditions for preparing the spinning solution and the spinning bath were indicated which make it possible to eliminate this defect to a very large extent; when, despite this, it exists in part, the more it is accentuated, the more the thread is weakened.

   The object of the present invention is the total elimination of this defect, that is to say to obtain a wire of which all the strands are practically tubular.

   It is known that in order to increase the tensile strength of an artificial viscose silk, it has been proposed to make the yarn travel along a long path in the coagulation bath, for example up to 2.50 meters. Contrary to all expectations, this process applied to the spinning of an artificial silk of viscose with hollow strands gives a cloisonné yarn, considerably weakened, while by a reverse phenomenon a path in the coagulation bath as short as possible, for example less than 25 centimeters, gives a wire whose strands are practically all provided with a continuous channel and whose aerimetric characteristics are normal.

   It should however be added that in this case the path of the wire in the air must be sufficiently long, for example greater than 1.50 m, to ensure an almost complete "fixing" of the wire before it is wound. In addition, there is often an advantage in eliminating the guide members of the wire in the bath, or any devices hindering its free movement, and in leaving only those intended to increase the tenacity by stretching between the bath and the feed roll or after this one.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

     Microscopic observation of the artificial viscose bristles with tubular strands thus obtained with a short path in the spinning bath shows that by this means a much more uniform width of the strands is also obtained.

   By way of example given only to fix ideas on the results that the process allows to obtain, a special viscose for hollow textiles, prepared according to the indications of French patents n 577,369 of April 13, 1923 and n 614,029 of March 5, 1926 was spun in a bath formed as indicated in French patent n 614.029 of March 5, 1926, on the one hand with a path of 50 centimeters in this bath, on the other hand with a path of 22 centimeters, all other conditions being alike.

In the first case: 50% of the strands are partitioned; in the second, all the strands are provided with a continuous central tube.

   French Patent No. 614,029 of March 5, 1926 specified the concentration limits within which the spinning bath must be kept in order to obtain son with tubular strands; the central part of the zones thus traced represents the optimum condition; As we move away from it, partitioning appears and becomes more and more frequent. This central part is considerably widened by the spinning with a short distance in the bath, object of the present invention, which confirms the interest that it presents for the manufacture of an artificial silk of viscose with tubular strands.
