 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  "Apparatus for skin sutures"
The invention relates to a device or apparatus for performing skin sutures by means of staples, comprising a magazine containing staples and a pin = ce, or a similar organ, for supporting the column.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of staples and which acts under the action of the operator's hand, to grasp the staples, one by one, and to tighten them, that is to say to bend them, so that the points or ends which they comprise penetrate into the skin, stretch the latter, and hold the lips of the part to be sutured against one another.

   The apparatus is essentially constituted by a ma = rectangular gasin, which contains at its lower part the clips, placed one on top of the other, that is to say di = placed in a stack (or in series), while in the upper part there are means for constantly pushing the staples downwards, with the interposition of a pressure or sliding block.

   These staples are suitably retained by the ends of two resilient legs which constitute the clamp, which serves to flex the staples, and force them to penetrate the skin. The two branches are placed laterally and are provided with means to be kept in contact with the clip which faces the lower opening of the channel.

   In an example of construction, as will be seen below, appropriate means are provided, constituted by teeth for example or in another way, for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 prevent the backing of the pressure or sliding block, if it undergoes an action tending to make it rise in the interior of the magazine, To load the device, the staples must be taken in a stack, the one on the other, that is to say kept in a stack or be arranged first in a column on a support which is, for example = ple, flexible or on a similar member.

   The entire column is intended to easily enter the magazine, in which the staples remain free in the column, tan = say that the flexible support is removed with extreme ease, For example, the column can be formed by a thin metal strip carrying at suitable distances from each other, curvatures or folds = res pocket-shaped, that is to say in a shape such that they agree with that of the staples. The central part of the clip is housed in these curvatures or folds, while at the top of each curvature, in the straight part between one curvature and the next, is cut a small tab of = stinée to enter in a small notch in the clip.

   The invention will be better understood and in a more precise manner by means of the following description, in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Figure 23 shows a plan of the whole of a stack of staples for loading the clamp carried by the support shown in Figures 19 and 20, this = you stack or column being ready to be introduced into the magazine forming a part of the device for skin su = tures.

   Figures 19-23 inclusive are on an enlarged scale to facilitate understanding of the drawings.

   In accordance with the example shown in Figures 1 to 5, the invention consists of a rectangular box -l-, also forming the body of the device, in the interior of which, also of rectangular section, neck = smooth a pressure block -2- guided laterally by two studs -3- moving in two lateral grooves (or guideways) -4-. This pressure block is subjected to the action of a spring -5-, formed for example by a strip folded in zigzag, or by any other suitable elastic means. The spring is carried at its upper part, by a cover or cap -6-. The store-1- is arranged to contain in its lower part a series of staples -7-, placed one on top of the other, in a stack. These staples can be of the standard type, or of any other type.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   The last staple, that is to say the one which is against the lower edge of the magazine-1- is carried by the end -8-, of appropriate shape, of the open recurve parts -9- of two branches - 10-10-, attached to the opposite end at -11-. These parts -9- enter two grooves: nures or guideways, -12-, suitably formed in the bottom of the store.

   The upper part-13) of the branches -10- is elastic, and the branches themselves are held by the ends -8- in contact with the last clip -7- by means of two ratchets -14-14- which are pivoted in -15- at the store through an opening -16- formed in the branches, and protrude on them externally in the form of a knurled button.

   The part of the branches-10- between the knurled bou = tone and the curved part-9- is similarly knurled on the outside.

   As seen in Figures 4 and 5, the box -1- comprises, at -17-, at its lower end, on the two longitudinal sides, an arc-shaped opening which allows the skin to rise when the pine = it acts.

   Figures 6 to 18 inclusive represent a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 clamp which has certain modifications intended to make it simpler and more practical. Without departing from the principle of having a clip magazine for staples, still characterized by the fact that it is arranged to put the staples in a stack, one on top of the other, in this last example, the pawls -14 -14- passing through the openings -16- in the branches have been removed. On the other hand, there are provided, still applied to the store, two arms pivoted respectively on the branches, these arms provided with appropriate grooves limiting the opening and the approach of the inférieu = res ends of the branches.

   In this way, this embodiment of the gripper consists of the usual rectangular magazine -18- provided, on each side, with two grooves -19-20-. The groove -19- ends at a certain distance from the end of the magazine, while the groove -20- extends to the lower part of the magazine, but has, at its upper part, a guide path - 21-, desti = born, as we will see, to the loading of the gripper.

   The store has at its lower part and on its two front faces an opening -22-, to which the groove -20- ends. The two elastic branches -23- -24- are fixed appropriately to the upper part =

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 of the magazine and opaque on the side of the latter, by means, for example, of screws -25-, welding, etc., ... Each of these branches, from its middle approximately to the vicinity of its eastern end widened and is curved at right angles at its lower end and tapered so as to be able to penetrate into a groove-26- made in the magazine -18-.

   The free end of each of these branches, that is to say that $ le which penetrates into the groove = nure-26- ends with a seat or embedding arron = di -27-, on which the two curved ends of the last staple, that is, the staple ready to be installed. Two arms are fixed at the ends of these branches and on the part of the magazine which is provided with the groove -19-, one, the left arm -28-, and the other, the right arm, -29-.

   These arms are widened at their free ends so as to allow a Z-shaped opening -30- to be made therein (see Figures 12 and 14). These two openings are placed one in front of the other so that a screw -32- connected with the magazine passes at point -31- (see figures 12- & 14). The two branches are de = stinated to be applied to this screw by approaching or moving away from each other, in agreement with

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 a pressure exerted on the knurled portion -33-33- of the branches -23- and -24-.

   The left arm -28- has a folded edge at its upper part, for a purpose which will be indicated later.

  A spring -34-, wound around a screw -35-, is placed below the two arms -28-29-, and keeps the device properly adjusted.

   Inside the store moves a coulis = sant or pressure member consisting of a small block -36-, mu = ni at its upper part and at its center, depending on its width, with a groove -37- and d 'a small vertical opening -38-. At the upper part, an opening -39- is intended to receive the rod -40- and a pawl -41-. This pawl is elongated, and wedge-shaped at its free end so as to be able to enter and slide in the groove -20-. Its end can play freely in this groove, with the aim of engaging one. tooth -42- (carried by the ratchet itself) with a rack -43-, or to release this tooth from this rack, which is fitted on the slot -20- of the store.

   A small spring -44-, threaded into the rod-40-, wraps around this rod and penetrates at its other end into the opening -38- made in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 the sliding block. This spring, of course, remains entangled in the groove -37- of the sliding block or pressure. Thus the block remains guided in the magazine by the pawl -41-s which moves in the groove -20-, and by the screw -401-, screwed into the head of the rod -40-, which moves out = places the along the groove -19-. A zig zag spring -45- constantly presses down on the grout block = health or pressure, while the small tooth -42- prevents any backward movement of this block, that is to say everything movement from bottom to top of the latter.

   In order to allow this block to move back freely, the pawl -41 must be operated so as to leave the tooth-42- disengaged; it can then be pushed up, and when the device is to be loaded, the pawl -41- can be fixed on part-46- of the groove -21-. The spring -45- is then fully compressed, and the lower magazine is free for loading,
At its upper part, the store carries a small plate -47- forming cover, fixed in a way that = conch, dovetail, for example. By raising this neck = vercle we can introduce the spring, and when it is in place it keeps the spring -45- at the upper part of the magazine, As we said for the load =

 ment, we take a series of staples, arranged in the form of a stack.

   As seen in Figures 19 to 23, the support can be formed by a strip of metal min = ce, ductile, -50-, provided with a series of bends or folds in the form of pockets-51- adapted to contain entirely a staple, arranged transversely. The distance between one bend-51- and the next is such that, as seen in Figure 23, the point -52- of one staple contacts the rounded portion -53- of the next staple. Between one fold and the next, the strip-50- has a small tongue-54- suitably cut from this strip and curved downward opposite the fold -51- located below.

  This tongue is intended to penetrate into a notch = the -55- made on the clip (see figure 22) and pressed on this tongue, so that the clip remains not only perfectly centered, but also fixed and hand = held on the band -50-.

   In Figure 23 is shown a loading band = gement, comprising a number of staples. This strip is ready to be threaded from the upper end of the clamp device.

   To load the magazine that is part of the gripper,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 shown in Figures 1 to 5, the stack of staples already formed (Figure 23) is properly introduced into the magazine, from below the latter, after having neutralized; = tralised the resistance of the spring which has to first been compressed, and the branches-10- are closed, so that the ends -8- grab the last clip on each side, then the metal strip is removed. The pressure block could also be provided with a protrusion on each side (which could consist of the stud -3- itself) allowing the pressure block to be grasped to introduce it into the magazine from the outside, so to compress the spring.

   A suitable stopper, for example toothing, can temporarily hold the pressure block in this position. This will make it easier to insert the stack of staples for loading.

   To load the clamp, shown in Figures 6 to 18, a loading stack is introduced through the lower part of the magazine (Figure 23), after neutralizing the action of the spring by means of the pawl -41 fixed at -21- , and after having suitably removed the branches by pressing a finger on the rim -48de so that the screw -32- can pass from the lower groove -30- into the groove -49-. As soon as the stack

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 staples is in its place, we press on the two branches -23-24-, and the arms -28-29- can then move closer to each other under the action of the spring -34 -. The pawl -41- is then released from its seat, and this type of clamp is now ready to be used.

   To use one or the other of the pliers described, in accordance with the invention, loaded as has been said above, the lower orifice of the apparatus is placed on the part to be sutured, while the two branches of the pliers with one hand. The two ends of the branches of the pliers then press on the staple which presents itself, forcing it to bend. The two points of the staple then penetrate the skin and, coming closer, lift the skin by bringing the two edges of the part to be sutured together, so that this part is lifted and enters the arc of the forceps (17 and 22). At the same time, the next clip of the stack, which is pushed down by the spring, descends, but remains held by the two ends of the branches, near the magazine opening.

   The device can be constructed in any size and any suitable material, and it can be used
