 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 EMI12.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 sens.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

  Method and apparatus for regenerating lubricating oils
This invention relates generally to the regeneration or rectification of used lubricating oils and it more particularly relates to a method and an apparatus for this regeneration and using a rotary still boiler to heat the oil to a sufficient temperature and maintain a pressure high enough to prevent vaporization of the components below the lubricating base, but to vaporize the lighter components as well as water or moisture which is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 usually emulsified with used lubricating oil.

   It is known that lubricating oil, after it has been used for a certain time, for example in an internal combustion engine, is rendered unusable for lubrication, not because of the destruction of its properties. lubricants, but for this simple reason that so much foreign matter has accumulated in it and water and gasoline or other light petroleum constituents have mixed with it during its use in a measure such as continuing to use this lubricating oil is more harmful than helpful to the moving parts of the engine.

   A suitable method and apparatus for the rectification and regeneration of used lubricating oils has already been sought, but the oils recovered or rectified by methods of this kind known hitherto have not always received the favor of the public, mainly for the reason that their color is not attractive, but is so dark compared to that of the original lubricating oil that it makes an unfavorable impression on the layman.

  In addition, difficulties have been experienced in removing light constituents as well as moisture from these used lubricating oils.

   In the processes which have heretofore been used to rectify, refine or recover oils in which a significant amount of water or moisture is entrained, it was necessary to expel the entrained moisture from the mass of oil. an extremely slow way to prevent what is called vomiting, which is the mechanical entrainment of oil by the vapors.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

  In accordance with prior methods, when the oil is rapidly heated to expel moisture, the vaporization of the moisture entrained in the oil creates such effervescence therein that a substantial amount of the oil. is actually entrained by vapors. But, if the heating is operated slowly and the moisture is slowly released from the oil mass, this disadvantageous oil expulsion by the vapors is usually avoided.

   The present invention relates specifically to a method and apparatus by which a mass of oil can be rapidly heated and moisture entrained therein can be rapidly expelled without loss of a significant part of the oil during vaporization. moisture.

   The invention therefore proposes to provide industry with a process for rectifying and recovering or regenerating waste oils free from the deleterious characteristics of known processes. Its object in particular is to carry out, in a process of this type, the distillation at a high temperature, but under a pressure sufficient to prevent the cracking of the constituents at low boiling point. In addition, the recovered rectified oil has a natural color. It is heated to a relatively high temperature in a relatively short time.

   The invention also relates to a rotary distillation boiler particularly suitable for the rectification or recovery of used lubricating oils and to an automatically controlled device for periodically releasing vapors from a rotary distillation boiler.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Various other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the detailed description which follows and from the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a somewhat schematic view illustrating the novel rotary still boiler constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig 2 is a detail view of a suitable device for controlling the still 1 distillation boiler.

   Fig. 3 is a detail view of a cam intended to cooperate with the release valve mounted on the boiler,
The used lubricating oil which is to be rectified or recovered by the present process is first subjected to an acid treatment in order to "break up" the emulsified state of this used oil and to precipitate the entrained foreign matter. by she.

   After this acid treatment, the treated oil is left to stand for a sufficient time to allow the precipitant to settle in the form of a sludge. After removing this sludge, the mass of oil is then preferably neutralized. using any suitable basic substance (such as lime, for example) and a quantity of fuller's earth is added, then the mixture is stirred until fuller's earth and lime are distributed substantially uniformly throughout the mass of oil.

  This mixture is then preferably introduced into a suitable still boiler, such as, for example, the improved rotary still boiler more fully described in the following, and it is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 heated to a sufficient temperature and under a pressure regulated so that the water vapors are first expelled, after which the temperature can be sufficiently raised and the pressure regulated so that the lighter volatile products which have been mixed with the lubricating oil are successively driven out. If it is desired to produce a heavy oil, the temperature can be high enough to collect a fraction of the light lubricant.

   According to the invention, after having vaporized as many constituents as desired, the unvaporized oil which remains with the fuller's earth mixture is then cooled and filtered to remove fuller's earth and chemicals from the oil. 'oil. It is found that, by this process, the rectified lubricating oil thus recovered has a natural color and possesses other lubricating properties of the same nature as those which had the original lubricating oil or of the first draft.

   According to the drawing, in particular FIG. 1, the used lubricating oil to be treated can be placed in a reservoir 1, preferably taking the form of a hopper provided with a valve 2 at its lower end.

  A certain quantity of sulfuric acid is then added to the oil in tank 1; the amount of diacid is adjusted according to the nature of the oil and according to the amount of impurities entrained in this oil. Under ordinary conditions, a driver can easily predetermine by careful observation and after a few tries the amount of diacid which is required. necessary to treat a particular oil simply by the touch of the oil.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   An air compressor 3 is provided and provided with a reservoir 4 connected by a pipe 5 to the reservoir 1. The pipe 5 descends into the reservoir 1 to a point very close to the bottom of this reservoir. After sulfuric acid has been added to the oil in tank 1, a valve 6 can be opened to allow compressed air to escape from tank 4 through pipe 5 to tank 1.

    The compressed air which escapes from pipe 5 into tank 1 agitates the mixture of used oil and sulfuric acid so that the acid is distributed evenly throughout the oil, allowing it to react with the impurities present and precipitate it, After the oil and acid have been sufficiently stirred, the tap 6 is closed to cut off the compressed air supply through the pipe 5 then the mixture contained in the tank 1 is left to stand for sufficient time to allow the precipitant to separate and settle as a slurry at the bottom of the tank. After the precipitant has separated and settled, valve 2 can be opened to allow the sludge to escape from the bottom of tank 1.

   Any suitable container, such as 7 can be placed under the tap 2 to receive the sludge. The plant operator can easily see when all the mud has been removed, because the difference in appearance between the mud and the treated oil is apparent even to someone who is not skilled in the art.

  After the sludge has been removed, the valve 2 is closed, so that the oil remaining in the tank 1 is practically free of all its solid impurities and the emulsion is practically broken.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   A certain amount of lime or any other basic substance is added to the oil contained in the tank 1, then a certain amount of fuller's earth is preferably added to it at the same time. We can then reopen the tap 6 to bring compressed air into the tank 1 and completely agitate the mixture it contains to distribute the fuller's earth and lime throughout the mass of the oil,! mixture of oil, fuller's earth and lime has been sufficiently stirred, this mixture is ready to be heated in the new distillation boiler constructed according to the invention to remove the fractions not suitable for lubrication.

   The distillation boiler in question is preferably of the rotating type and in the exemplary embodiment illustrated in the drawing it consists of a drum 8 mounted on a shaft 9. Suitable bearings 10 are provided at the opposite ends of the shaft. axis 9 and are supported by a suitable frame consisting for example of the uprights 11.

   The uprights 11 are connected at their upper ends by a series of horizontal pieces 12. A fire chamber 13 having a chimney 14 surrounds the drum 8 and is supported at one end by a belt 15 descending from the horizontal pieces. 12; of course, two belts 15 are preferably provided at a rate of one on each side of the chamber 13. In the embodiment shown, a suitable plate or beam 16 preferably extends across the bottom of the chamber 13 and is connected at one of its ends

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 to the uprights 11 and at its other end to the belts or belts 15, so that the chamber 13 is supported by the frame on which the drum 8 is rotatably mounted.

    The chamber 13 is preferably provided with a cover of insulating material 17 and may contain a suitable heating device, such as for example an oil burner 18 preferably disposed directly under the drum 8 so as to heat it. It can be seen from the construction which has just been described that the fuel oil distributed to the burner 18 is burned to heat the drum 8 and the oil which it contains, the combustion gases being able to escape from it. bedroom 18 by the fireplace 14.

   As indicated above, the drum 8 is rotatably mounted relative to the frame which supports it and to the chamber 13 and, according to the invention, the drum is preferably rotated during the application of heat to this drum. . A series of axial angle irons 19, the wings of which extend radially inside the drum, are preferably placed inside the drum. It is obvious that these angle irons stir and agitate the melan. ge located inside the drum during the rotation of the latter.

   In addition, the flanges of the angle irons 19 perform the additional function of conducting heat from the surface of the drum to the interior thereof in the mass of the mixture contained in this drum.

   In the embodiment shown, the pin 9 is preferably hollow at one of its ends; it thus has a central bore 21 over a short distance.

 outside of drum 8. A suitable conduit 22 communicates with bore 21 near its inner end; at its other end, this duct 22 is connected to the box, of a valve 23 more fully described in what follows.

   At its outer end, pin 9 terminates in a condenser 24, which may be of any suitable type known in the art. The central bore 21 of this axis 9 is connected to the usual coil of this condenser 24, which means that the vapors given off from the drum 8 by the valve 23 can be conducted through the duct 22 and the bore 21 to the condenser 24.

   The drum 8 is also provided with a tap 25, which is preferably arranged to be connected (when in the position shown in Fig. 1) to the duct 26 leading to a cooling chamber 27 of any suitable type. The valve 25 is preferably designed so that it can be connected with a pipe 28 arriving from the reservoir 1 when it is in its upper position, that is to say displaced by 1800 with respect to the position shown in fig. 1. The conduits 26 and 28 are;, preferably, provided respectively with fittings 29 and 30 to connect them to the valve 25 when it is suitably placed.

   The drum 8 can also be provided with a manometer 81 of any suitable type, as well as with a pyrometer 32 indicating the temperature of the mixture contained in the drum.

   The valve 23 is arranged to periodically discharge the vapors which are expelled from the mixture located in the drum 8 during the heating of the latter ,, In the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 embodiment shown, it comprises a valve or valve body 33 provided with a rod 34. A spring 35 is provided to push the valve 33 against its seat, in the closed position of the valve, and the rod 34 is provided at its outer end of a head 36 intended to engage with a ramp or cam 37 during the rotation of the drum 8.

   The ramp 37 is preferably formed or disposed on the frame supporting the drum and is positioned so that the head 36 of the valve stem is moved against it to open this valve in order to allow the release of the vapors contained in the drum. 8 during the time when the head 36 is in contact with this ramp 37.

   Since very often, especially during the preliminary heating of the mixture contained in the drum 8, it is not desirable to periodically open the valve 33, but to allow the pressure to rise inside the drum. drum during the heating and expansion of the mixture therein, it is preferable to provide the ramp or cam 37 with a device making it possible to erase it, that is to say to move it away from its position for which it engages the head 36 of the valve stem 23.

   FIG. 3 shows in detail an embodiment of such a cam or ramp; a suitable support, such as a plate 28, can be suitably mounted on the frame supporting the drum 8 and the chamber 13, and thus be kept in a fixed position with respect to the moving parts. An elastic steel blade 39, which in fact constitutes the ramp or cam of the device is fixed at one of its ends by any suitable member,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 such as = rivet 40, on the plate 38. At its opposite end, the me 39 can be split or receive a rivet or a stud 41 on which it can slide ,, Between the rivets 40 and 41, the plate 38 has a part threaded 42 arranged to receive a screw 43.

   As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the end 44 of the screw 43 is arranged so as to engage the blade 39 and thus push it outwards at a sufficient distance from the plate 38 to bring this blade 39 into. the path of the head 36 of the valve 23 during the movement of the drum. It can thus be seen that when the screw 43 is rotated so as to move its end 44 to the right (according to FIG. 3) the blade 39 contracts, in other words straightens up to take a position substantially parallel to the plate 38.

  Geoi brings its ramp or cam surface to a position such that it is not attacked by the head 36 during the movement of the drum 8.

   Fig. 2 shows a suitable drive mechanism for the rotating drum 8. In the embodiment shown, this drive mechanism is designed to oscillate the drum or move it alternately in opposite directions at a slightly angle. greater than a full circumference is approximately 370. This mechanism can be driven by any suitable device, for example by an electric motor 45 on the end of the shaft of which a crank 46 is mounted.

   A segment 47 is mounted on a pivot 48 provided on the frame comprising the uprights 11 and has on its periphery gear teeth 49 arranged to engage with the teeth of a pinion 50 wedged on the axis 9

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 of the drum 8. A connecting rod 51 or any other suitable member is provided to connect the crank arm 46 to the toothed sector 47, which causes the toothed sector 47 to be set in oscillation around its pivot 48 on each revolution of the arm. 46.

   In the illustrated embodiment, the lengths of the respective crank arms 46 and 47 are preferably proportioned so that with each revolution of the arm 46 the toothed sector 47 is moved in each direction an angular distance sufficient to rotate pinion 50 approximately 370 in each direction.

  In the position shown in fig. 2, the mechanism occupies an intermediate position for which the drum 8 occupies a position displaced by 1800 from that shown in fig 1. With a mechanism such as that which has just been described, it is obvious that a movement The oscillating element is imparted to the drum 8 with each revolution of the arm 46 at an angle slightly greater than a full reference and of about 370, so that the head 36 of the valve 23 is brought into a position where it is adjacent. to the cam 37 at the end of its movement in each direction, that is to say twice on each turn of the arm 46, it is obvious that when the valve 23 is in the position shown in FIG.

   1, the teeth 49 of the sector 47 adjacent to one end or the other of this sector are in engagement with the teeth of the pinion 50. Furthermore, with an arrangement of this nature, it is evident that the valve 23 is maintained. in its open position for a lapse of time substantially double that during which the cam 37 would keep it open if the drum 8 were rotated in a single
 EMI12.1

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 meaning. Moreover, although the mechanism illustrated by the drawing is preferable under certain operating conditions, it is obvious that any suitable control mechanism serving to oscillate the drum or to rotate it in one direction only can be used in place of the one shown.

   However, with the mechanism shown, the stirring or agitation of the mixture contained in the drum is more complete in most cases than when the drum is rotated in one direction.
The refrigeration chamber 27 may be of any type suitable to substantially lower the temperature of the mixture of oil and fuller's earth which is withdrawn from drum 8 after the desired components have been vaporized. A conduit 52 is provided to supply the cooled mixture from chamber 27 to a suitable pump 58. This pump delivers the mixture through a conduit 54 to a filter press 55.

   The latter can be of any type well known in the game; this may be for example the "bag filter" in which a series of bags (five in the present case) is suspended in the chamber and the mixture is discharged through the bags under the force exerted by the pump 58; it is evident that the fuller's earth and the ohi'-'mic products remain on the outside of the bags, while the oil is forced back through the fuller's earth layer. outwardly of the bags and into the outlets 56 provided for the respective bags, eventually reaching a conduit 57. The latter leads the recovered rectified lubricant to any appropriate storage container. prayed (not shown).

  In the operation of the device which has just been

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 described, the used lubricating oil is passed into the drum 8 after having treated it with acid and neutralized and after having mixed with it a certain quantity of fuller's earth. When it is desired to fill the drum F. it can be brought into the position shown in FIG.

  2, for which the valve 25 occupies its upper position, near the connector 30 provided on the pipe 28. This connector 80 is then connected to the threaded or threaded connection of the valve 25, then a valve 58 provided on the pipe 28 is opened. to allow the oil coming from the reservoir 1 to flow into the drum 8. When a sufficient quantity of lubricant has been allowed to flow into the drum 8, the tap 58 is closed, the fitting 30 is undone and the tap 25 is closed to prevent the oil from escaping from the drum 8. We can then light the burner 18 and start the movement of the drum 8. It is obvious that during the time when the oil in the drum 8 is heated, a movement oscillating is continuously imprinted on this drum.

   Since it is desirable to allow the pressure in the drum to rise, the screw 43 is unscrewed to allow the leaf spring 39 to return to a position where it cannot open the valve 33 during the movement of the valve. drum.

   The temperature of the oil in the drum is then high enough to vaporize the water or moisture which has been absorbed by the fuller's earth, because when the latter is initially mixed with the oil contained: in the tank 1 , it readily adsorbs water or moisture entrained with that oil, but when the mixture of oil and fuller's earth is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 sufficiently heated in the drum 8, the water or moisture is vaporized and rises to the upper part of the drum.

  Under ordinary conditions, it is desirable to raise the temperature to about 177 ° C, at which point a pressure of approximately 8.0 kg3 per cm2 occurs in the drum before valve 23 is opened for the first time to allow release. 'escape of water vapor. It is important, at this stage of the operation, that the temperature sufficient to vaporize the humidity is maintained for a sufficient time to vaporize all the humidity or water entrained in the mass of oil before allowing the vapors to escape. any.

   According to the invention, the heating of the oil is carried out rapidly so that the vaporization of the water or moisture entrained in this oil takes place very rapidly, but all the vapors are trapped in the drum 9 until until the vaporization is complete and the equilibrium has ceased.

   It is known that when water or moisture entrained in a mass of oil is allowed to vaporize rapidly, a substantial amount of the oil is carried away by the vapors, but the vapors here are collected above the surface. of the oil until the vaporization of the water or moisture it contains has been completed, so that the oil which is entrained by the vapors can fall back into the bulk of the oil, while that the vapors are collected above its surface and in the drum 8.

   According to this invention, no amount of steam is allowed to escape until after all the moisture or water has been vaporized, so that no part of the heavy oil is mechanically discharged.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   beg for the drum with the vapors.

   Accordingly, when the desired temperature and pressure has been reached at which the water or humidity is fully vaporized and is above the surface of the oil in the form of water vapor, the screw can be screwed in. 43 to return the leaf spring 39 to the desired position so that it engages the head 86, after which, during the movement of the drum 8, when the head 36 engages the ramp or cam 37, the valve 33 is forced inwards despite the action of spring 35 to periodically allow the release of the water vapor contained in the upper part of the drum. This water vapor escapes through valve 23, conduit 22 and bore 21 into condenser 24, from where it can be withdrawn and used.

   After this preliminary operation is completed, the temperature of the mixture in the drum can be raised to a sufficient degree to drive off lighter volatile constituents, such as for example light oils which are mixed with the lubricating oil.

  Under ordinary conditions, it is preferable to raise the temperature of the mixture to about 28,800, at which point the pressure is approximately 4. kg2 per cm2 before actuating screw 43 to allow periodical release of these vapors. When the desired temperature and pressure have been reached, the ramp or cam 37 is brought into the working position, so that the vapors are released at the end of each oscillation and that they are allowed to escape into the condenser 24, from which they can be collected and used in any way desired.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

   It is often preferable to continue fractionation until at least a fraction of lubricating oil has been collected. In this case, after the very light volatile parts have been removed, the ramp or cam 37 returns to its inactive position, then the temperature in the drum 8 is raised to such an extent that a light lubricant component is vaporized. The temperature required for this vaporization is generally between 370 and 400 C. When it is reached, it is indicated by the pyrometer 32, so that a worker can then bring the ramp or cam 37 to its working position to allow the periodic exhaust of the vapors present in the distillation boiler.

   As a precaution, it is usually desirable to take a lubricating oil fraction in order to ensure the removal of all the vapors of light components.

   According to this process and using the rotary distillation boiler described here, it is possible to raise the temperature of the mixture contained in the boiler from ambient temperature to around 400 ° C. in a fairly short time, for example. example in 85 to 40 minutes. The presence of fuller's earth and its stirring or agitation probably contributes to a considerable extent in ensuring the rapidity of this heating. It is evident, in fact, that fuller's earth acts as a conductor thanks to which the heat coming from the walls of the drum is easily conducted inside the mass of oil contained in the drum.

   Since, during the movement of the * drum-, the angle irons 19 continue to stir, agitate and beat the mixture in this @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 drum, the heat is quickly distributed throughout the mass of the mixture, which makes rapid heating possible.

After the desired number of components has been vaporized and discharged through valve 23, the drum is stopped in the position shown in FIG. 1, for which the valve 25 is in alignment with the connector 29 of the duct 26.

   The connection 29 and the tap 25 are then connected, so that this tap can be opened to allow the mixture contained in the drum, which comprises the constituents with a boiling point below the lubricating base and fuller's earth. This chamber 27 is preferably of such size that the mixture from drum 8 is easily cooled to approximately 115 ° C. as it passes through it. From this chamber 27, the mixture passes through line 52 to pump 53. The latter delivers the mixture through line 54 to filter press 55, which is of the usual bag type, as indicated above.

   The pressure generated by the pump 53 rises on the oil contained in the chamber of the filter press 55 and forces this oil back through the filter bags, extracting and separating the fuller's earth and the chemicals it contains. - was born previously. The rectified or purified oil which is recovered and which then exhibits a natural color is then discharged through line 57. It can be disposed of as desired.
