<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
actionné depuis la source d'énergie.
-
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
PATENT OF INVENTION in the name of: HENRY P A T E R S O N "Improvements made to ribbon wrapping machines."
The invention relates to machines for forming rolls, balls or discs of tape or the like. such as jute tape, and more particularly to rollers or rollers of the kind in which the pile, roll or disc of tape is initially formed on a center or center piece or on a pair of these. centers, which is or are actuated directly by a rotating device, such as a wheel, drum or belt, either by frictional contact with it or by positive engagement between these parts, for example by means of teeth, and then by frictional contact only between the outer peripheral surface of the pad and the wheel, drum, belt or the like.
In some types of bale wrappers, the driving device, such as a wheel, drum, or belt, is arranged below the center of bundle, and is lifted by

In these machines, the drive wheel or other control device can also be moved to the center or centers on which the ball is formed so that radical pressure is exerted on the peripheral surface of the ball during its formation, in order to produce a tightly wound ball. In certain constructive forms of winding machines of the type described above, the driving wheel has been provided, on its peripheral surface, with teeth arranged so as to cooperate during the initial formation of the ball with corresponding teeth formed on the one or more. center curl, or on one or more portions of these.
One of the main objects of the invention is to ensure in a pelotoneuse of the above type that, when the driving wheel is placed with a view to starting a ball, when this wheel has teeth, these mesh exactly. with the teeth of the centers, or are meshed exactly by them, and that, when a friction surface is provided to cooperate with one or two retracted centers, that surface is not entrained in engagement with the center or centers so far that there may be pinching between the centers, or between the center in a disc, when these are brought back into the curling position.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a wrapper of the above type, means by which, when a roll or a bundle is started, the tape is positively rotated, to form a very tight core and is effectively prevented from twisting around the forming medium

of the ball.
Another object of the invention is to ensure, with a machine of this kind, that the pressure applied to the pilot during its formation is kept substantially constant. Another object of the invention is to make such that the linear speed of the tape remains substantially constant as it passes from the dispenser rolls to the circumference of the ball and that any tendency in the tape to be stretched and therefore loosely looped around the circumference of the ball is eliminated.
A further object of the invention is an improved bale wrapper of this type, which can perform in a fully automatic manner the operation consisting in releasing a finished batch of ribbon and in starting the next bundle when the bundle being formed reaches a diameter. predetermined the starting of said operation can also be carried out by manual means, if and when it is desired, independently of the size of the ball.
According to another characteristic of the present invention, in a machine of this particular type, a driving wheel is arranged so that it is automatically the vee, towards the toothed center or centers, when a ball is started, and this , over a substantially exact distance, so that when the drive wheel has teeth, the latter mesh correctly with the teeth of the center (s) and, when the friction surface is provided to cooperate with one or two retractable centers, the surface is not drawn beyond or between the withdrawn center (s).
This exact delimitation of the driving wheel can be carried out, for example, by means of means actuated by the wrapper and combined with an arm, on one end of which the driving wheel is mounted so as to be able to turn, said arm being arranged so that it can be raised by pivoting around its other end.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The arm supporting the driving wheel is preferably arranged so as to be lifted into its active position by pivoting by means of a cam arranged so that the machine rotates it before the start of a ball, and

Advantageously, the. cam actuating the arm cooperates with a roller mounted on a plate having approximately the end of a Y, and acting as a cleat, which is connected to a lever pivotally mounted on the arm so as to have an amplitude of oscillation limited with respect to it} to provide the lost movement.
A spring can be arranged to move the lever towards the cam to stop the lost movement, and the arm can be provided with means, such as stops, by which its swinging movement is limited, in one of the directions, to the position in which the teeth of the driving wheel mesh with the teeth of the centers, and, in the. opposite direction, to the position corresponding to the maximum dimension of the ball.
The oscillating movement of the arm can be constrained by friction to prevent its free oscillation, for example by means of a friction pad applied to the shaft of or pivoting / supporting the arm, or by a screw, an arm. pin or the like fixed radially in the pivot shaft supporting the arm, and protruding through an arcuate slot formed concentrically to the shaft in the bearing block of the latter, with which said pin is in friction contact. is lying. This screw or this plug can also be used to limit the amplitude of the pivoting movement of the arm.
The arm supporting the driving wheel is provided with means by which it can be retained in its upper position by friction, and the surface of the cam which can be employed to move the arm to this position is advantageously formed.

circular at the end of its part which raises the arm) so that it can retain the arm in its active position while the friction retaining means are engaged.
When employing a toothed drive wheel, its rotation may be produced by means of a pinion which meshes directly with the teeth formed in its peripheral surface, the pinion being actuated through any gear from a power source such as the control of the baler.
The drive wheel can be maintained in its upper position in mesh with the teeth of the pe- loner centers, or in frictional contact with them, by means of a brake drum and a brake associated with the arm on which the drive wheel is mounted so as to be able to rotate and also to oscillate, and the brake is arranged to be released when necessary to bring the arm into the position of putting a ball in motion.
Alternatively, the drum may be connected to the arm supporting the drive wheel, by means of a ratchet and ratchet wheel device or the like. Advantageously, the brake drum and the brake associated therewith are said. posed so that its central plane is approximately in alignment with the central plane of the disc or the pad, which eliminates any tendency of the drive wheel to twist by return to the pad, due to non-twisting movement balanced produced by the brake. The resistance of the brake provides a force which deflects the drive wheel and thus acts to apply the necessary radial pressure to the pad during its formation.
As the diameter of the pad rises during formation of the latter, the drive wheel is pushed down in antagonism with the resistance of the brake and thus serves to maintain an approximately constant radial pressure on the pad.
The arrangement by which the drum is connected to the arm supporting the Drive wheel by means of a hook and ratchet device or equivalent device enables the wheel
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
drive or similar device to be returned to its position operated when a ball is completed, in preparation for the. starting the next pad, and exerting the desired pressure on the pad, without it being necessary to loosen the brake itself. The brake can therefore be adjusted to the desired degree of resistance, and it will only be necessary to adjust this occasionally when the braking surfaces become worn.
Preferably, a number of pawls are provided, arranged around the ratchet wheel so as to have a minimum of play. The teeth of the ratchet wheel are preferably of small size.
In winding machines of the type described above, the tape is usually gripped between the peripheral surface of the drive wheel and the peripheral surface of the center or centers, and, according to another feature of the invention, the tape is disposed. so as to be gripped initially between teeth or jaws provided in the meeting end surfaces of a pair of retractable centers on which the ball is to be closed.
These teeth may be radial and have the shape of bristle teeth, or the end faces of the centers may be crenellated, or have some other shape such as the two centers, when brought against each other. - be automatically before a ball is started, engage one in the other positively in alignment, so that if teeth are provided on the two centers, which must mesh with the teeth of the drive wheel, these teeth of the two centers come out aligned with each other before being put into mesh with the drive wheel.
The driving pinion of the driving wheel is preferably mounted concentrically to the axis around which the arm supporting the driving wheel is mounted so as to be able to pivot, and in another method of lifting the arm to the posi - tion of starting a ball, the pinion can be locked relative to the arm, so that the latter can be brought into its active position by pivoting by means @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
operated from the power source.
-
The drive pinion is arranged so as to control, by means of a drive or clutch device, a timing shaft on which are fixed the control cams of the arm supporting the drive wheel, the release mechanism and reapplying the brake, the levers to remove the centers and the lever or levers to remove the plate or plates. The drive device may be arranged so as to be actuated either by manual means or by means of an adjustable stopper or a similar member on the arm supporting the drive wheel.
In a convenient embodiment, the drive device comprises a tooth protruding radially from a sleeve mounted to be rotated by the drive gear, on and connectable to the timing shaft. by means of a pawl mounted on a part connected to the timing shaft, the oliquet being biased towards the tooth but being kept out of engagement with said tooth in antagonism with this bias, by means of a stopper of drive in contact with a lever which can be released with a force either by manual application / or by the oscillating arm or by a stop on the latter, when it is moved as far as possible outwards by the ball which forms.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the driving wheel is arranged so that, when it is in positive mesh or in frictional contact with the pair of retractable centers on which the ball is formed, it occupies a position relative to the rollers. tape dispensers and to the centers on which the ball is to be formed, such that the tape is first delivered to the surface of the drive wheel, which by its rotation drives the tape down and delivers it directly between the centers on which it must be put in a ball, so that it is seized by these centers when they are brought against each other to start a ball.
The drive wheel can also be arranged relative to the pivot
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
As the diameter of the pad increases during forming, the tape is carried by the drive wheel directly into the "bite" formed in the peripheral surface of the pad due to the radial pressure exerted on it by the drive wheel. The tape therefore does not pass around one of the bumps which are formed on each side of the "bite". The linear speed of the tape as it passes from the dispenser rolls around the circumference of the ball is thus kept substantially constant and the tape has no tendency to stretch and therefore be loosely wound around the circumference of the ball. pelota.
One or more of the plates or discs between which the ball is formed, may be arranged so that it can be retracted to a sufficient extent to allow the ball or disc to easily exit between the plates, and to perform this retraction each retractable plate can be rotatably mounted on a console which is itself mounted so as to be able to rotate to a limited extent and is associated with a fixed part of the machine so that its rotation also produces a translational movement for moving the associated plate or disc, axially with respect to itself, either to bring it closer or to move it away from the other disc or plate.
According to another feature of the invention, when employing tooth centers and a toothed drive wheel, the need to lubricate the drive wheel and the toothed centers on which the pad is formed can be avoided by building in rawhide or of similar material the teeth of one or the other or ohaoune of the two cooperating parts.
The entire ball change mechanism can be operated by oames mounted on a single countershaft which is arranged so that it is rotated once to effect the ball change by attacking the ball changing device. clutch,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the setting in motion of this change being carried out either automatically when the diameter of the ball has reached a predetermined dimension, or manually when it is desired, and the orders of the different parts by these oames have between them relations such as when a ball is completed, first the retention by friction exeroé on the arm supporting the driving wheel is interrupted,
then the centers and the plate or plates are retracted to allow the ball to fall out of the machine, then the drive wheel is moved up to its active position and then the centers are brought against each other. the other and finally the frictional restraint is again applied to the arm supporting the drive wheel and simultaneously the plate or plates are moved to the activated position.
In an oonstruotive arrangement of the device according to the invention, the drive wheel for the baler is mounted at one end of an arm which is pivotally mounted at the other end in the center of a brake drum. The drum is mounted from so as to be able to turn and is surrounded along its circumference by a brake tape which is fixed to the machine and is adjustable in a suitable manner ,, The inner periphery of the drum is provided with roohet teeth over the entire oiroonferenoe and with the drum supporting the driving wheel is associated an oliquet which cooperates with the roohet teeth to allow the upward movement of the arm to bring the periphery of the wheel into alignment with the teeth arranged on the coiling centers.
The downward motion is thwarted by the brake drum via the roohet teeth, and as the pad diameter increases during the bunch, the drive wheel is pushed down in antagonism with the tape resistance. brake on the brake drum. This places the neoes-
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
sary on the arm so that the drive wheel applies radial pressure to the pad during its formation, said pressure remaining substantially constant throughout the formation of the pad. Furthermore, when a ball is completed and it has been removed from the machine, the arm can be moved to the active position of the drive wheel without releasing the brake, thanks to the connection applied between the pivot of the arm and the brake drum.
One embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, which show somewhat schematically a machine suitable for coiling up jute ribbons.

According to the drawings, the roll or ball of tape is formed on a pair of oentres 5 between two parallel plates or discs 1 and 1a, which are mounted so as to be able to turn in ball bearings 2 supported by oonsoles .Chaoune of the consoles comprises three arms 4 directed radially and oonneotés by their inner end to an oreux hub or manohon 43. The oonsole oorrespon- danté by which the plate is supported so as to be able to turn, is fixed by means of the part 27 to the frame 44 of the machine, while the ends of the radial arms 4 of the oonsole supporting the plate 1, are provided with outwardly directed pins, which engage in slots formed in the ends facing the interior)
corresponding arms 3 directed radially from an annular member or manohon 45 mounted so as to creep on the oreux hub or manohon 43, and arranged to rotate to a limited extent with respect to the latter. The arms 3 cannot rotate but can move laterally in a direction parallel to the axis of the plates 1 and 1a. The slots 35 as shown in FIG. 4a are slightly inolined so that, when the arms rotate, a lateral movement of limited magnitude of the arms 4 and also, consequently, of the plate 1 is obtained. This movement of movement of the arms 3 is produced by the 'via a lever 46 which projects radially from the annular member 45.
Through the center of hub or manohon 43, and through the center of a corresponding manohon in part 27, retractable brass ointments 5 on which the ball is formed project axially.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
These centers, which have a substantially cylindrical shape but tap out slightly towards the center of the machine, have on their interior faces, which meet, radial floss teeth as shown in the plan view of FIG. 2, while they have, on their outer peripheries, teeth 46 as can also be seen in FIG. 2.
The centers 5 can be removed by means of rods 47 which are connected to the ends of levers 6 mounted on pivots 48, placed in their intermediate parts. The posterior ends of these levers 6 are provided with
EMI12.1
oi ttea4q 1 rollers "Y49 which cams cooperate with 20 so as to be made to pivot about their pivots 48 in order to withdraw or bring back the centers 5 when desired.
Normally, the levers 6 are inclined by means of flat springs 29 so that the centers 5 are held end to end and, as the centers can rotate freely in the sleeves 43, the teeth of their contact faoes are agenated to ensure that, when brought into the starting position of the ball, the control teeth 46 of each of the counters 5 are brought into the same alignment.
In order to rotate the centers 5, a driving wheel 34 is provided, the periphery of which is lined with teeth suitable for meshing with the teeth 46 of the centers 5. This driving wheel
34 is rotatably mounted at the lower end of an arm 36 which is fixed to a shaft 40 directed transversely and mounted in bearings 13 so as to be able to oscillate.
A pinion 11 meshing with the drive wheel 34 is mounted loose on the shaft 40, and also meshes with a pinion 14 attached to a drive shaft 39 which can rotate freely in bearings 18. At one end of the shaft 39, which s' advance beyond the frame 44 of the machine is fixed a chain drive wheel 26 which transmits to the -machine the command from
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
the source of driving force. At its other end, the drive shaft 39 is provided with another chain wheel 50 which, by means of a chain 25, moves a chain wheel 5 linked to the shaft 52 of the distribution roller 9 of the tape, with which the pressure roller 8 cooperates for the delivered tape.
The arm 36 supporting the drive wheel is also provided with a brake drum 12, which is fixed on it oonoentrically with respect to the shaft 40 and to the pinion 11. Aveo this braking drum coops a braking tape 31 fixed in an adjustable manner at 42 by one end and connected by its other end to the end of the arm 53 with a lever 32 mounted on a pivot at an intermediate point 54 At its other end, the lever 32 carries a pin or button 55 which rests on the surface of a blade 21 fixed to a countershaft 41 which is rotatably mounted in bearings carried by the frame 44. A the location of its pivot 54, the lever 32 has a part 32a, directed towards the arm and the lower end of which is linked by a rod 7 to the arm 46 which produces the axial displacement of the plate 1.
The elbow lever 32, 32a is inclined against the surface of the oame 21 by means of a spring 3Q, so that, when the oame 21 leaves the position shown in FIG. 4 by turning slightly in the direction of clockwise movement, the spring 30 rotates the elbow lever 32, 32a counterclockwise around its pivot 54 until the oheville 55 comes up against the lower surface of the oarne 21. During this movement, the lever 46 has rotated enough to withdraw the plate 1 as far as possible, and at the same time it releases the brake tape 31, so that the brake pulley 12 and hence , the arm 36 are free to rotate.
The upper end of the arm 36 carries a stop 38 which cooperates with a stop of the frame 44 of the machine, for li-

mimic the range of motion of the arm towards the centers 5.
Alternatively, the stopper may be placed at the pivot point of the arm 36, and include a set screw fixed in shaft 40 and directed radially therefrom through an annular slot of limited length. in the support sleeve. The movement of the arm 36 is produced by means of an oame 22, which is fixed to the countershaft 41.
This cam, which has the form shown in FIG. 5 .cooperates with a roller 56 which is provided at the location of the fourohe of a member 23 having approximately the shape of a Y and connected by its non-bifurcated end to a lever 57. The upper end of this lever is pivotally mounted on the arm 36 and rests at its lower end against the lower end of a spring 33 which is linked at its upper end to a stop 70 of the arm 36, against which the lever 57 strikes when the arm 36 moves outward. This connection is arranged in such a way that, when the oame 22 is in the position shown in FIG.
5, that is to say at its maximum lift, the drive wheel 34, although it meshes exactly with the teeth 46 of the centers 5, can however move away from them to a limited extent in antagonism with the action of the spring 33, until the stop 71 arrives ontaot with the lever 57 fixed to the member 23 in ton of Y.
The oames 20 which actuate the levers 6 to remove the centers 5, are also fixed on the countershaft 41, which the motor shaft 39 rotates one full revolution to carry out the removal of a finished ball and the setting. in the process of the next one. This rotation of one turn is effected by means of a pinion 15 fixed to the shaft 39 and meshing with a pinion 16 mounted on a shaft 58 on which is also fixed a pinion 17 which meshes with a pinion 19 mounted on the oon - tre-shaft so as to be able to turn and associated with the latter
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
by a clutch device which operates only when it is desirable or necessary to remove a ball.
The control mechanism of the roller change mechanisms is shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 8a. A manohon provided with a tooth 59 directed radially is mounted idle on shaft 41. The manohon is connected to pinion 19 and continuously rotates with motor shaft 39 in the direction of boom 60.
To the shaft 41 is fixed a flanged disc 61, in which an oliquet 62 is mounted to pivot freely at 63; this oliquet has an arm 64 resting against an arm 37 of an elbow lever pivoting at 65. The other arm 66 of the elbow sink projects radially from the disc 61 to engage a recess 67 formed in the valve. rod 75 which is articulated at 68 and forms an extension of a hand lever 10 which can be actuated at any stage of the formation of the ball, to remove the latter.
The rod 75 is also arranged to be lifted by the arm 36 or by a stop 70 carried by oe arm and ooopoyant with an adjustable butt 72 mounted on the. rod 75, when the arm reaches its maximum external position compatible with the possibility for the diameter of the forming pad to reach a predetermined dimension.
If the lever 75 is raised, either manually by lowering the lever 10; or automatically from the arm 36, the pawl 62 is moved inwards by means of the spring 69 so that it is engaged by the tooth 59 of the shaft 41 and the oame 21 is rotated to release the braking tape 31 and at the same time retracts the plate 1, and the cams 20 are rotated to retract the centers 5. to move towards the centers 5 because of its ppopre weight, but this movement is obstructed by providing a bearing gripping the shaft 40 or by any other suitable means.
The arm is then moved until the teeth of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
drive wheel 34 is aligned with the teeth 46 of the removed centers 5, by the Y-shaped member 23 which is actuated by the oame 22 attached to the shaft 41. The control of the arm 36 prevents this arm from wobbling when the ball falls out and therefore prevents the roller or roller 56 on the Y-shaped member 23 from striking against the surface of the cam 22. Before the drive wheel 34 has reached the start-up position, the finished ball has fallen out of the machine and the tape descending from between the rollers 8 and 9 falls sharply on the toothed surface to the drive wheel 34 and thence descends approximately through the axis of the retracted centers.
The final rotation of the shaft 41 then brings the centers 5 against each other and the hanging end of the tape is thus gripped between the contiguous serrated edges of the two centers. Teeth 46 are brought into the correct alignment when these serrated faoes adjacent to the centers 5 meet and teeth 46 are therefore also meshed with the teeth of motor wheel 34 laterally. Immediately after this operation, the plate 1 is moved inwards under the action of the cam 21, which simultaneously applies the braking tape 31 to the braking drum 12 to retain the arm 36 in its active position by friction resistance .
The arrangement of the various control oames 20, 21 and 22 on the counter abre is such that when the ball change lever 75 is lifted the brake 31 is immediately released to release the pressure acting on the circumference of the roller. of ribbon. Immediately after that ,. the plate 1 is retracted and simultaneously the centers 5 are withdrawn.
The cam 22 which positions the arm 36 supporting the drive wheel now occupies a position such that the roller 56 mounted on the Y-shaped bracket 23 is moved away from the surface of the inner part of the cam. The latter at the

Instead of the end of the braking tape 31 being connected to the arm 53 of the lever 32, it can be fixed to a stop of the frame 44, and the braking tanbour 12, instead of being fixed relative to the arm 36, can be associated with the latter by means of a device with oliquet and roohet wheel which allows the free movement of the arm 36 towards the centers 5, while the displacement from the centers can only be effected in antagonism with the friction resistance of the brake tape 31.

pendamnent from the. speed of the platooner, the pinions 15, 16 17 and 19 can be replaced by pinions of different diameters.
It is evident that the construction, arrangement and operation of the pelononneuse described above, by way of example, can be varied considerably in many respects within the scope of the invention.
It is also evident that by the operation of the hand lever 10 a roll can be released from the machine when its diameter has reached any dimension and that the automatic click can be arranged so as to release the ball when it has reached. any predetermined diameter. Finally} it is clear that if we introduce a device such as an oame actuated from the motor shaft 3 @, in order to tilt the lever 66 retaining the oliquet, this mechanism can be agenoé, by a suitable choice of to release the ball after a predetermined amount of tape has been wound on centers 5.
