Animal galopant.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Galloping animal.
The present invention relates to toys and more especially those of the tilting animal genre which can be ridden by children.
It aims to provide an animal mounted on wheels which can move by the simple movement of the body of the child without intervention of the feet or hands of the latter to communicate a movement of advance.
For this purpose, the galloping animal, object of the invention, is characterized in that the body of the animal is mounted on a horizontal axis, while the legs articulated to the body, are fixed at their lower end on crankshafts shifted by approximately 180.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
horizontal is made integral with a frame or chassis which also carries the crankshafts to which the legs of the animal are attached.
The crankshaft to which the front legs of the animal are attached, is integral with the crankshaft to which the rear legs are fixed, by an endless chain or other similar member passing over toothed gears or others fixed on the axis of rotation of each crankshaft ,
The frame or chassis is mounted on wheels, and the front wheels; 3 can be directed by a transmission canism depending for example on the rotation of the animal's head.
In order to make the invention fully understood, an exemplary embodiment will be given below.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a galloping horse constructed according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a view from below of the chassis or frame which is mounted on wheels and which supports the horse.
In these figures, 1 designates the body of a horse or any other animal made of cardboard, wood or any other material. The front legs 2 are articulated to the body 1 and can oscillate around an axis 3. It is the same for the rear legs 4 which can pivot around an axis 5.
According to the invention, the body 1 of the horse is mounted on a horizontal axis 6 provided at the end of an upright 7 carried by a frame 8 which is itself mounted on front wheels 9 and rear wheels 10.
The frame 8 carries two crankshafts 11 and 12, the crankshaft 11 receiving the ends of the front legs 2 while the crankshaft 12 receives the ends of the rear legs 4. These crankshafts are mounted in supports or bearings 13 and bear, on the rectilinear part located in their axis of rotation, toothed wheels 14 and 15 on which passes an endless chain 16.
The rear wheels 10 are fixed to the frame of ma-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to maintain their position in relation to it at all times. As regards the front wheels 9, these are mounted so that they can be steered. For this purpose, their axis 17 is fixed in a part 18 mounted so as to be able to oscillate about an axis 19 fixed to the frame 8. These parts 18 are connected to a rod 20 by small arms 21, the ends of the Rod 20 carrying pins 22 to which are fixed arms 23 joined on the other hand to a pin 24 mounted at the end of a T-shaped part 25 capable of pivoting about a pin 26 fixed to the frame 8.
The branches of the T 25 receive the ends of cables 27 which pass along the frame to the base of the upright 7 which are directed along the upright 7 and which, after having entered the body of the animal, come to rest. fix at points 28 integral with the base of the head 29 of the horse, This head is mounted so as to be able to pivot about an axis 30 ..
It is easy to realize, under these conditions, that when a child riding the animal tilts its body forward, an oscillation of the animal's body will occur around the horizontal axis 6. For This oscillation, the front part of the horse lowers and causes the rotation of the crankshaft 11. By this same oscillating movement, the rear part of the horse rises, thus causing the rotation of the crankshaft 12 at the ends of which the wheels are fixed. rear 10. The joining of the two crankshafts by the endless chain 16 makes the rotation of these two crankshafts particularly easy and consequently the rotation of the rear wheels 10.
This results in an advancing movement of the animal, which being set in motion, the projection towards the barrier of the child's body reverses the oscillating movement of the animal's body in the other direction, which has the effect of making the crankshafts complete the rotation initiated by the forward movement of the child's body.
To allow the body to oscillate 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the animal, the two crankshafts 12 and 13 are offset by approximately 180.
If the child wishes to change the direction of the animal's course, it suffices for him to rotate the head 29 around the axis 30. By this rotation, a traction is exerted on one of the cables 27 , which has the effect of oscillating around the axis 26, the T 25 and thus driving to the left or to the right the rod 20 which rotates the parts 18 around the axes 19 and tilt the front wheels 9 towards left or right.
It is obvious that the body of the horse can be replaced by the body of any animal. Likewise, the member for transmitting the rotational movement of the two crankshafts may also consist of a rope or a cable placed in grooved wheels on the crankshafts or even by any other equivalent system,
In addition, galloping animals can also be made on a reduced scale so that they can simply be pulled by the children instead of being ridden.
In this case, the animal's head does not necessarily have to pivot so as to keep the front wheels in a fixed position relative to the frame.
