 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a patent application for "Drying installation".

   The present invention relates to an electric drying installation suitable more particularly for wood and also usable for drying fruit, pasta, etc.

   According to the invention, a drying chamber is arranged in a drying air circuit maintained by a fan, means being provided to allow the admission of air when necessary.

   The appended drawings represent, schematically and by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Fig. 1 is a plan view in partial section of the installation; fig. 2 is a vertical section, the door being assumed to be removed; fig. 3 is a side view; fig. 4 is a vertical section of the heating chamber and FIG. 5 shows the diagram of the electrical connections of the installation.

   The drying installation shown in the drawings comprises a box 1 whose base is rectangular in shape and which is closed on its front face by a door 2, easily removable. The rear wall, the side walls and the ceiling of the caissonl, as well as the door 2, are made of boards made up of several layers, for example by means of a first layer of "Eternit" of 6 mm., The second layer being made of 3 mm asbestos, the third by a plate of wood fibers of 25 mm. and the fourth again with a 6 mm "Eternit" plate, the different plates being listed from the inside to the outside.

   By removing the door 2 which has a bar closure not shown, the entire interior space of the box becomes accessible, given that the door occupies the entire facade. The box is closed at its lower part by a bottom 3. In the longitudinal direction, the box is subdivided, by means of two partitions 4 and 5 of strong fine-meshed wire mesh, into a heating chamber 6, a drying chamber 7 and an air suction chamber 8. In the heating chamber 6 is mounted an electric furnace 9 comprising three heating elements of different dimensions 9 ', so as to allow the furnace to be adjusted as desired at different heaters.

   If, for example, the three elements are powerful 4, 5 and 6 KW, the oven

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 5 KW (element 2), 6 KW (element 3), 9 KW (element 1 and 2), 10 KW (element 1 and 3), 11 KW (element 2 and 3), and 15 KW (element 1, 2 and 3). The dry air leaving the furnace 9 passes through the heating chamber 6, the drying chamber 7 and the air suction chamber 8. In order to obtain a closed circuit for the dry air, the air is returned. directly from the chamber 8 into the chamber containing the furnace 9, through a copper tube pipe 10, arranged at the bottom of the device, under the bottom 3, and by means of a second pipe 11, also in tube copper, placed in the heating chamber 6.

  Between the pipe 10 and the pipe 11 is arranged a fan or an exhauster 12, capable of producing an energetic air circulation. This exhauster 12 is driven by an electric motor 13 mounted outside the box. In order to allow the introduction of fresh air into the closed circuit, and the escape into the open air of the air saturated with humidity, the pipe 10 comprises a bypass 10 'opening into the open air and having to its end a closure member or a fresh air regulating valve 14. The suction chamber 8 communicates with the free air, via an exhaust pipe 15 arranged in the ceiling of the box, this tubing also being provided with a regulating valve 16.

   In the heating chamber and below the furnace 9 is a water basin 17 which is filled with water when the installation is intended to be used for the treatment of wood with water vapor.

   The outer face of one of the side walls of the box 1 receives a control panel 18 constituted for example by a polished "Eternit" plate, fixed at a certain distance from this wall; ae table carries side by side three communicators at degrees 19; below these a two-pole rotary communicator 20 in molded material, as well as an oil switch 21 for the heating, and another oil switch 22 for the motor 13 and the exhauster. The

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 The board has a connection box 23 for the switches 19, a thermostat 24 for the heating and another thermostat 25 for the engine and the heating.

   As shown in fig. 5, the diagram is arranged such that the rotary switch 20 controls on the one hand the oil switch 21 of the heater 9, and on the other hand the oil switch 22 of the engine 13. Given The arrangement adopted, the heating can only be switched on with the motor 13 of the exhauster 12 switched on. There is therefore no risk of the heating elements burning out due to forgetting to switch on. of the exhauster 12. The outputs of the step switches 19, schematically indicated by arrows, are connected to the corresponding heating elements of the apparatus 9, the connection point on the apparatus itself being designated by 26. The outputs of l The oil switch 22, designated by arrows are connected to the motor 13.

   The bi-polar thermostat 24 controls the heating and can be set to a determined temperature, for example 140 ° C. As soon as during a drying operation the temperature inside the box 1 reaches 140 ° C., the thermostat 24 cuts the heat. heater. If the temperature drops to a lower value, to 130 ° C. for example, the thermostat 24 automatically restarts the heating. The thermostat 25 for its part provides combined protection of the engine and the heating. This thermostat is for example set at 150 ° C. and cuts off the engine and heating circuit if the thermostat 24 does not work or if the engine overheats.

   The switches 19 corresponding to the heating elements each have four fuses which themselves correspond to the momentary heating rate. The heater is fitted with an outlet for dry air in its lower part, and covered with a protective fine-mesh wire mesh.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 not shown, adjustable from the outside. The partitions 4 and 5 made of wire mesh ensure a uniform distribution of the dry air over the entire passage section of the drying chamber 7. The door has, in the vicinity of the heating chamber 6, a glazed window, not shown, behind which is a psychrometer allowing the determination of the relative temperature and humidity of the air.

   The operation and operation of the electrical drying installation described above are then as follows: The drying chamber 7 is filled with wood to be dried or with any other material to be dried, then the door of the box 1 is closed. The rotary switch 20 is then operated, which causes the heating and the motor to be switched on simultaneously. The switches 19 are then checked to see if they are set to the desired heating rate, and the setting is possibly carried out using the other switches 19. As soon as the temperature reaches 60 to 80 oC, and if the device is used for drying the wood, the water sprayer is switched on.

   With fir wood with a thickness not exceeding 30 mm. and with a water content of 23 to 27%, it is sufficient to spray water during the first hour of the drying operation. The same characteristic fir wood, but up to 60 mm thick. requires spraying for three hours at the start of the operation.

  In an installation as described, fir wood with a thickness of less than 30 mm. goes from 23-27% moisture content to 5-6% overnight. Spraying with water from the start of the drying operation prevents the formation of a surface crust on the substances to be dried which occurs quite often if these precautions are not taken; this advantage is due to the preliminary vaporization of the wood. After stopping the water sprayer, the air saturated with moisture is expelled and fresh air is introduced into the device. Drying occurs, in the case of previously vaporized substances, in a much more

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 uniform, and without any surface crust formation.

  If the drying is carried out at high temperature, as in the case described, the wood no longer absorbs moisture as in the case of wood dried at 80 oC only. In the drawings, the directions of circulation of the drying air are indicated by arrows. The dry air is sucked by the exhauster 12 into the chamber 8 through the pipe 10, and delivered under a certain pressure through the pipe 11 in the chamber 6 to the heating device 9. The dry air passes through the various heating elements from top to bottom, and is distributed, once heated, in the chamber 6 in which it becomes saturated with humidity, if necessary, either then from the operation of the water sprayer, or thanks to the basin 17 previously filled.

  The hot air leaves the chamber 6 through the mesh 4 which ensures its uniform distribution, and then passes over the substances to be dried, passing through the drying chamber 7 at a relatively high speed. After passing through the screen 5, the dry air returns to the suction chamber 8 if the discharge pipes 15 are closed. If these pipes, as well as the bypass 10 'are open, the exhauster through this bypass, while the hot air saturated with moisture which is in the box is forced through the exhaust pipe.

   If the operation is continued for a long enough time, the air would heat up to a temperature of about 360 oC if the bi-polar thermostat 24 did not ensure the automatic adjustment of the temperature to a predetermined value by interrupting the heater.

   An installation as described is also suitable for the additional drying of furniture elements, coated or polished, and in this case has the advantage of avoiding the unpleasant sinking of the polish.

   Space-saving drying installations as described and illustrated are more particularly suitable.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 wind, if necessary, be replaced by masonry dryers of any desired size, the appliances being of proportionately larger type and size or existing in greater number.
