 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
PATENT OF INVENTION Installation comprising an electric discharge tube, for example for the emission of light.

   The invention relates to an installation comprising an electric discharge tube in a gaseous atmosphere intended, for example, for the emission of light and comprising an incandescent cathode, the heating current of which is supplied by a transformer. . A reactance coil is connected in series with this discharge tube which is supplied by the same current source as said transformer. This current source can be constituted, for example, by a 220 V AC network. It often happens that the voltage of an AC network differs from this nominal value.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 final and is, for example, 2.00., - 240 or 260 V.

   To suit the installation for connection to networks of different voltages varying, for example, from 200 to 260 V, the reactance coil as well as the primary winding of the transformer supplying the heating current for the incandescent electrode (s) , can be provided with tap-offs so that for a given voltage of the supply current source the reactance coil can be adjusted so that the current passing through the discharge tube acquires its normal value, the primary winding said transformer being able to be adjusted at the same time so that the heating current has the desired intensity.

  This adjustment of the reactance coil and of the transformer is often very difficult to operate because these two components can be found in different places. In installations intended for street lighting, the heating transformer is usually mounted near the discharge tube, that is to say in the fitting located at a high height above the pipe. ground while the reactance coil can be placed in the lower part of a street lamp post or in a junction box located low from the ground.

   The present invention enables these drawbacks to be considerably reduced. In the installation according to the invention, the reactance coil is adjustable and for this purpose it comprises bypass taps, the primary winding of the heating transformer being connected to this coil in such a way that part of this coil. The latter can be interposed in the circuit formed by this primary winding and the current source, the reactance coil being able to function, consequently, also as an auto-transformer.

   The

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 voltage supplied to the primary winding of the transformer, in this case is constituted by the sum of the voltage of the supply current source and of the voltage produced in the part of the reactance coil which is interposed in the circuit formed by the current source and the primary winding of the transformer. The conditions can easily be chosen such that for different voltages of the supply current source, that is to say for different values of the part of the reactance coil which is connected in series with the tube At discharges (this part being determined by the desired normal current of the discharge tube) the voltage applied to the primary winding of the heating transformer is constant or nearly constant.

   In fact, the part of the reactance coil which is interposed in the circuit formed by the current source and the primary winding, can be adjusted in such a way that the desired voltage of the heating transformer is obtained. If the voltage of the supply current source exactly matches the voltage for which the heating transformer is calculated, this part of the reactance coil is reduced to zero. In the adjustment for a given voltage of the current source, one only has to modify the connections of the reactance coil while the heating transformer can remain completely unchanged.

   The invention will be better understood by referring to the appended drawing in which Figures 1 and 2 show, by way of example, the connection diagram of two installations in accordance with the invention.

   The electric discharge tube 1 shown in the two figures and intended for the emission of light, can be, by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 example, a sodium vapor tube. This tube, which gives during operation a positive column discharge, comprises two incandescent electrodes 2 and 3 connected, respectively, to the secondary windings 4 and 5 of a heating transformer 6, the primary winding of which is denoted by 7. One end of the winding 7 is connected directly to the incandescent electrode 3 and to the terminal 8 of an alternating current source 9 constituted, for example, by an alternating current mains at low voltage.

   The incandescent electrode 2 is connected to the end 14 of a reactance coil 10 mounted in series with the discharge tube 1. This reactance coil has several bypass taps a, b, c, d , e, f, and g, two of which are connected, respectively, by means of the conductor 11 to the terminal 12 of the current source 9 and by means of the conductor 13 to the primary winding 7 of the transformer.

   Assuming that we want to suit the installation for connection to AC networks of 200 to 260 V and if the voltage of the current source is 260 V, we connect conductor 11 to a tap-off such as of the reactance coil, for example at point d, that the current flowing through tube 1 has its normal intensity. The transformer 6 can be calculated in such a way that the desired heating current is obtained if the voltage supplied to the primary winding 7 is 260 V. In the case considered, in which the voltage of the current source is of 260 V, the conductor 13 is then also connected to the bypass socket d.

   If the installation has to be supplied by a lower voltage network, for example 230 V, the part of the reactance coil which is in series with the tube is reduced.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 discharge returns to its normal value. To this end, the conductor 11 is connected to another branch socket, for example at point c. The conductor 13 is connected to a tap-off such, for example at point e, that the total of the voltage of the current source 9 and the voltage induced in the part of the reactance coil between the two connection points conductors 11 and 13 to the reactance coil, i.e. 260 V.

   For any voltage of the current source 9, it is thus possible to choose the connections to the reactance coil in such a way that not only the current flowing through the discharge tube is brought back to its normal value, but also a voltage of 260 V is brought to the primary winding 7. There is thus obtained a universally applicable device, in which the heating transformer can remain completely unchanged and in which one only has to modify the connections to the reactance coil.

   The heating transformer can also be built for other voltages. It may be advisable to choose the voltage of this transformer in the middle of the voltage limits for which the installation must be suitable.

  If these limits are, for example, 200 and 260 V, you can choose a transformer voltage of 230 V. If in this case the voltage of the current source is 230 V, connect conductors 11 and 13 at the same tap of taps. For a lower or higher voltage of the current source, the conductor 11 is connected to a bypass socket respectively less or more distant from the end 14 of the reactance coil, and the conductor 13 to a bypass socket respectively more or less distant from this end.

  In many cases it is permissible to connect the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 conductor 13 permanently at a determined point of the reactance coil. For example, in Figure 2 the conductor 13 is permanently connected to the end 15 of the reactance coil. Assuming, for example, that in this case the voltage limits of the current source are 200 and 260 V and that the transformer 6 is constructed for a primary voltage of 260 V, the conductor 11 is connected as well as the conductor 13 for a voltage of the current source 9 of 260 V, at the end 15 of the reactance coil. This coil is calculated in such a way that the discharge current has in this case its normal value.

   For a voltage of the current source 9 of 200 V, the conductor 11 is connected to the bypass tap closest to the end 14 of the reactance coil, this point a being chosen such that in this case the discharge current also has its normal value.

  The voltage applied to the primary winding of transformer 6 is then slightly lower than the normal voltage of the transformer of 260 V.

   To determine the voltage applied to primary winding 7, reference can be made to the following simplified numerical example:
For an operating voltage of the discharge tube of 80 V and for a mains voltage of 260 V, the voltage absorbed by the reactance coil (voltage out of phase by 90 in relation to the operating voltage) must be # 2602 - 802 = 247 V. For a mains voltage of 200 V, the part of the reactance coil which is connected in series with the tube, must absorb '2002 - 802 = 183 V. For this purpose, the number of turns located between end 14 and point a of the reactance coil, must be # 183/247 times the number of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 turns between the end 14 and the end 15 of the reactance coil.

   The potential difference existing between these ends of the reactance coil is in this case 183 # 247/183 = # 247 x 183 V, the voltage applied to the primary winding 7 having a value of # 247 x 183 + 802 = 227 V.

  This voltage is supplied to the transformer when the discharge tube is operating. For voltage limits of the current source 9 of 200 and 260 V, a voltage of 227 to 260 V is therefore supplied during normal operation to the primary winding 7 of the transformer.

   In an analogous way it can be found that when the heating transformer is calculated for 230 V, the voltage applied during normal operation varies between 214 and 244 Volts. In many cases these variations in the voltage of the transformer are satisfactory and the advantage is obtained of having to modify only the connection of the conductor 11 to the reactance coil.

   As figure 8 shows, the heating transformer has a separate winding 16, one end of which is connected to winding 7 while the other end is connected, possibly through a high resistance, to an electrode. auxiliary 17 located on the outer wall of the tube. The winding 16 as well as the auxiliary electrode 17 facilitate the initiation of the discharge.

   The installation according to the invention is applicable not only if it has to be suitable for different voltages of the power source, but also if it has to be connected to different alternating current sources at different frequencies. different.

   In the present description and in the summary, the term "gaseous atmosphere" includes not only an atmosphere.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 a sphere made up of gas but also an atmosphere of vapor or a mixture of gas and vapor.
