<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

The Company called: KayGyroplanes Limited in EDINBURGH (Scotland) Aerial locomotive.
The present invention relates to aerial locomotion devices of the kind in which the lifting is derived totally or partially from a system of upper rotating wings usually called a rotor, which rotates about a more or less vertical axis, more particularly a rotor. device in which the rotor is self-rotating, that is to say rotated during the flight under the action of the wind of the flight, although it is also applicable to rotors which can be actuated during the flight.
In machines of this kind it is known to effect or assist tilting with a view to rotation, by mounting the rotor in such a way that it is capable of being tilted sideways in either direction. and it is also known to provide a front-to-rear inclination of the rotc to allow the direction of flight to be changed with respect to the horizontal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For this purpose the rotor has usually been mounted on some form of mast capable of tilting in a lateral direction or a back and forth direction around its lower end.
For example the mast has been mounted on a form of universal joint which is rather bulky and does not allow easy adjustment within precise limits and in which the lateral inclination takes place independently of the inclination back and forth.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of support for the rotor which is particularly simple in construction and operation and which is adjustable to the smallest degree desired.
According to the present invention, an aerial locomotion machine of the kind in question has the characteristic that the member supporting the rotor is capable of tilting sideways and in a front-to-back direction around a single rotating member on which is mounted the member supporting the rotor, the arrangement being such that the rotation of the rotary member forces the member supporting the rotor to tilt laterally and also allows the movement of the member supporting the rotor in a forward direction back around the axis of this rotary member.
The rotor supporting member may be mounted so as to tilt sideways to the machine and also in a forward and backward direction, on a member which is fixed to a shaft or the like and has its axis tilted. with respect to the axis of the shaft or of the equivalent part, the arrangement being such that when the shaft or its equivalent is rotated, the member supporting the rotor is forced to incline laterally with respect to the machine around its lower end, the direction of the inclination depending on the direction in which the shaft or its equivalent is turned.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In one construction, the rotor is carried so that it can be rotated by a mast or the like supported by a hinge pin or a Z-crank, comprising coaxial bearing pieces and an inclined crank knob on which the end lower part of the mast or equivalent member is pivotally mounted, means being provided to reduce or adjust the forward and backward movement of the mast which may occur around this crank button.
In such a construction, a shaft may be disposed at right angles or substantially at right angles to the front-to-rear plane of symmetry of the locomotive, a sleeve being fixed to the shaft with its axis inclined relative to the locomotive. to the axis thereof, and a mast supporting the rotor or an equivalent member being pivotally disposed on the sleeve at its lower end with its axis substantially vertical and placed behind the axis of the sleeve.
For a more detailed description of the type of hinge pivot or Z-crank member preferred for supporting the rotor, reference may usefully be made to the disclosure of Patent No. 399551, issued to one of the present inventors, in. which are described various constructions of these members in their use to vary the incident angles of the propeller, wings or rotating blades and thrusters.
In accordance with the invention described and claimed in this specification, the means for varying the angles of incidence of rotating blades and the like comprised two coaxial pieces arranged to rotate in the hinge pivot support means and a crank button member on which each blade could turn, the axis of the crank button being inclined on the common axis of the coaxial parts.
With this arrangement (which should be understood as
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
containing its various variants), as a result of its assembly, the blade is rotated substantially about its general longitudinal axis so as to vary its angle of incidence, and the plane in which the axis of the crank knob is tilted when in its middle position is the general plane of rotation. Unlike this arrangement when adapting a crank knob or Z-crank member to tilt the rotor in accordance with the present invention, the plane in which the axis of the crank knob is tilted when the rotor is in the normal position or median is a plane different from that of the axis of the mast, for example a plane at right angles to the latter.
It will easily be understood that by the use of an arrangement of this kind, the mast can be tilted laterally at will by rotation of the coaxial parts of the crank-button member while it is free to tilt around. of the axis of this crank button member (that is to say in a direction substantially from front to back).
In the case of the assembly of the parts in an aerial locomotion machine, it is obvious that when the crank button member or its equivalent is inclined on the axis of its supporting parts, the axis of the organ crank button or that of the supporting parts can be arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the machine, but in practice it is preferred, according to the present invention, to adopt the second of these means since the The longitudinal inclination of the mast can then be done along a line inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the machine and that consequently the lack of balancing of the ascent due to the variation of the angles of incidence of the blades extending laterally will be compensated, at least to some extent,
by the displacement of the center of the rotor relative to the center of gravity of the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In a constructive embodiment of the invention, the mast on which the rotor rotates is provided, at its lower end, with a pair of parallel console members extending vertically downwards. These consoles are pivotally supported at one end by the crank button member of the device to effect a lateral inclination and are interconnected at their other ends by a cross member to which an anchoring member is universally connected.
The coaxial parts of the hinge pivot member are arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive and as a result the crank knob itself is at an angle to it and the consoles parallels, which are perpendicular to the axis of the crank knob, are in turn inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the machine. The mast position can be vertically above or a little behind the crank button, while the consoles extend a relatively large distance rearward to the position in which the anchor link is attached. .
It is preferred to mount the mast so that its vertical axis is between the crank knob and the anchor link, since in this way the load is more evenly divided between these two parts. This characteristic is also important in order to facilitate the implementation of the invention described in another patent application relating to the adjustment of the angles of incidence of the blades of the rotor. In this patent application, the operating means of the angle of attack control is described as being disposed in the axis of rotation of the rotor and comprising, in one embodiment, a shaft which is threaded or otherwise established so as to move in rotation. back and forth in the rotor mast.
It is obviously desirable to. leave a play space for the passage of this marble through the support of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
rotor and for this reason the two inventions are preferably employed in conjunction with each other.
An arrangement constructed according to the present invention, with or without the arrangement of the means actuating the incidence control as just described, can also be usefully combined with the characteristic of the invention which is the subject of another patent application relating to the assembly of the pinion transmitting the initial command by means of the rotor. In accordance with this invention the pinion is mounted so as to be capable of tilting to engage or disengage with a gear associated with the means and in one form it is described as being mounted eccentrically in a rotatable support. When combining this invention with the present, the pinion support is carried by the lower end of the rotor mast or the brackets associated therewith.
The rotation of the crank button member to effect the lateral tilt of the mast can of course be achieved in any suitable manner, for example by means of a rotary shaft actuated by hand in any suitable manner or well it can be operated by motive force. The shaft is, however, advantageously coupled to a rotary control arranged in the cabin of the locomotive vehicle.
One embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example on the accompanying drawing boards in which:
Fig. I is an elevational view, partly in section, of the rotor support mast and its associated mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a plan view from above corresponding to FIG. 1 and partly in section.
Fig.3 is a cross section through the line B-B ae Fig.2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
FIG. 4 is a partial view partly in section, showing the mounting of the mast on the Z-crank member.
If we refer to the drawing:
The hollow mast I is bifurcated at its lower end and provided with two lateral flanges 2 and 3 extending downwards which are mounted respectively on the support pieces 4 and 5 of a sleeve 8 with a hinge pin or a crank in Z, wedged on the crank shaft 7 in Z. The latter is supported in bearings 8 and 9 carried in the side flanges of the rotor support IO console which is mounted on a pillar extending upwards from of the fuselage.
As seen in Fig. 2, the axis AA of the coaxial parallel bearing pieces 4 and 5 of the Z-crank sleeve is inclined with respect to the axis BB of the Z-crank shaft 7 and, this being the case, the axis of the sleeve 6 or the axis of the shaft 7 can be arranged perpendicular to the central line CC of the locomotive, but it is preferable to have the axis of the shaft perpendicular to the central line CC since the longitudinal inclination of the mast I then takes place along a line inclined with respect to the central line of the machine and, consequently, the uplift due to the variation of the angles of incidence of any blades extending laterally is compensated,
at least to some extent by the displacement of the center of the rotor relative to the center of gravity of the locomotive. The side plates II and 12 are respectively fixed to the side flanges 2 and 3 and extend rearwardly relative to the mast I, as shown in fig. I2 and 4 and at their rear ends they are connected by a spindle 13 on which is mounted a pivoting block 14 provided on both sides with spacer tubes 15-and 16.
The bifurcated end 17 of a connecting rod 18 embraces the block 14 and is fixed to the latter by a pin 19 passing through
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
shuffles them fork and across the block. The lower end of the connecting rod 18 is also bifurcated at 20 and is connected, with a view to universal movement, to the bifurcated upper end 21 of a rod 22 by means of the transverse pins 25 and 24, the rod proper being screwed as shown in fig. I in a correspondingly threaded drum 25.
The upper end of the latter is rotatably mounted by means of ball bearings 26 in a housing 27 which is fixed to the outside of the base of the rotor support bracket 10, the upper end of a cable drum 28 being wedged at the lower end of the drum 25 and arranged so as to be able to rotate in the interior of the housing by means of the lower ball bearings 29. In this way, the drum 25 and the drum 28 can rotate all in one piece inside the housing 27 but they are fixed so as to prevent any axial movement relative to the housing by means of a nut 30 which is screwed onto the lower end of the drum 25. The drum 28 is provided with grooves 51 for receiving an operating cable.
As previously mentioned, the side flanges 2 and 3 are mounted so as to pivot on bearing pieces 4 and 5 of the sleeve 6 of the Z-crank. Consequently, the connecting rod 18 forms by the Mechanism intermediate describes a means of anchoring the mast to the rotor support bracket 10 and also forms a link in the mechanism chain for adjusting the back and forth tilt of the mast.
The Z-crank constituted by the shaft 7 and the sleeve 6 having its axis AA inclined with respect to the axis BB, is obviously a form of construction of the Z-crank or of the hinge pivot member described and claimed. to patent No. 399551 granted to one of the present inventors, where it is used to vary the angles of incidence
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of air ... propellers, rotating blades or wings and thrusters. In its present application to the lateral inclination of the hub IA of the rotor, the horizontal or substantially horizontal plane in which the axis A '- A' of the sleeve 6 with a Z-crank is disposed when it is in the middle position, is perpendicular to the axis of the mast I, see fig. I.
In this way, to obtain the lateral inclination of the mast I, it is simply necessary to turn the shaft 7 of the crank in Z, the mast being at the same time free (unless it is held back) from s' tilt in a back and forth direction around the common axis of the supports 4 and 5 of the sleeve 6 of the Z-crank.
Appropriate means are provided for limiting or regulating the back and forth movement of the mast I around the bearing pieces 4 and 5, these means consisting, in the present construction, of a mechanism comprising the pin 15, the connecting rod 18, the threaded rod 22 and its housing 25. The inclination back and forth of the mast I can also be modified by rotation of the pulley 28 and consequently raising or lowering of the posterior ends of the plates II and 12 and rotation of the pulley. mast around the common axis of the sleeve 6 of the Z-crank.
