 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

1. "Wing for rotorcraft and rotorcraft provided with such a wing"
The present invention relates to a wing for a rotorcraft, comprising at least one rotor provided with blades each articulated around a longitudinal axis.

   Helicopters, for example, known heretofore, have a separate control for adjusting the angle of attack or the cyclic pitch of the blades. This not only has the drawback of complicating the mechanical construction of helicopters, but also requires the pilot to have relatively advanced knowledge of the control system and a long experience to maneuver such helicopters.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The object of the invention consists essentially in overcoming the anticipated drawbacks and in presenting a rotary wing making it possible to considerably facilitate piloting. of a rotorcraft.

   To this end, the rotorcraft wing, according to the invention, has means making it possible to automatically adjust the angle of attack of the blades under the action of aerodynamic forces, as a function of the speed of rotation. blades around the rotor shaft as well as the load to be carried by the airfoil and the speed of movement of the latter.

   According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the point of application of the resultant of the lifting forces acting on each of the blades is located outside the vertical plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the latter, on the side. opposite to its leading edge, during the rotation of the blade around the rotor shaft, a device for balancing the aforementioned moment being associated with the blade, the side of this device opposite to the bearing surface of the blade having a surface inclined in the opposite direction to that of the aforementioned bearing surface relative to the plane forming, with the bearing surface, the angle of attack of the blade.

   The invention also relates to a rotorcraft provided with the airfoil described above.

   Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description of the drawings appended hereto and which represent, by way of nonlimiting example, several particular embodiments of the subject of the invention.

   FIG. 1 is a schematic and plan view, with partial breakages, of a wing according to a first embodiment of the invention.

   Figure 2 is, on a larger scale, a section following

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 before line II-II of figure 1.

   Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 are views similar to that of Figure 2, schematically showing the forces acting on the airfoil, shown in Figures 1 and 2, occupying different positions.

   FIG. 7 is a schematic and plan view of an airfoil according to a second embodiment of the invention.

   Figures 8 and 9 are sections along lines VIII-VIII and IX-IX of Figure 7, respectively.

   FIG. 10 is a schematic and plan view of an airfoil according to a third embodiment of the invention.

   Figures 11 and 12 are sections along lines XI-XL and XII-XII of figure 10, respectively.

   Figure 13 is a schematic and elevational view. with partial breakage, of a helicopter provided with a wing according to the invention.

   Figure 14- is a plan view corresponding to Figure 13.

   In the various figures, the same reference numerals designate the same elements or similar elements.

   The rotary airfoil 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 consists of a rotor 2 provided with two blades 3 arranged in the continuation of one another. The blades 3 can each pivot around a shaft 5 extending along one. of their longitudinal axes.

   The profile of the blades 3 is extended, with respect to the shaft 5, in the direction of their trailing edge 6. constituting the rear edge of the blades 3, considering the direction of rotation 17 of the rotor 2. A balancing member 7 is rigidly mounted on each of the blades 3, on the side of their trailing edge 6. This member 7 has, on the side opposite the bearing surface 8 of the blades 3,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 a surface 9 inclined in the opposite direction that of the bearing surface 8 with respect to the plane 10 forming with the latter the angle of attack i of the blades 3, the plane 10 is parallel to the direction of the relative wind. Part 11 of the balancing member 7 having the inclined surface 9 has a profile substantially similar to that of the blades 3.

   This part 11 N extends parallel to the blades 3 over a portion of the length of the latter and at a certain distance from their trailing edge 6, so as to provide a free space 12 between the trailing edge 6 and the part II of the balancing member 7. The latter is supported by two support bars 13 arranged perpendicular to the shaft 5 and substantially in the lateral prolongation of the blades 3.

   FIG. 3 represents the wing 1 in a portion corresponding to the hovering flight of a rotorcraft provided with this wing.

   In this position, the vertical force F, called the lifting force, acting on a blade 3, balances the component P of the weight of the rotorcraft which can be mathematically localized in a blade 3, on the axis of the rotation shaft. 5 of the latter, and the vertical component Gy of a force G coming from the action of the relative wind on the inclined surface 9 of the balancing member 7. The drag Fx and the horizontal component Gx of the force G are balanced by the force T applied by the motor, not shown, of the rotor 2 on the blade 3, The force F constitutes the result of the aerodynamic forces acting on the blade 3.

   Furthermore, according to the invention, the moment formed by the force Fy around the axis of the shaft 5 is counterbalanced by the moment, around this same axis, of the component Gy.

   The aforementioned balance is a function of the speed of rotation of the rotor and of the angle of attack i of the blades 3, which is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 approximately the angle formed between the airfoil 8 of the blade 3 and the relative direction of the wind.

   In the event of acceleration of the rotational movement of the blades 3 around the shaft 4 of the rotor 2, by an increase in the force T, we will have the situation shown in figure 4. The higher rotational speed of the blades 3, obtained at this moment, causes an increase in the forces Fy and Gy and this in a relative relation which makes it possible to maintain the equilibrium between the aforementioned moments of these two forces Fy and Gy. On the other hand, the force P being constant, the increase of the force Fy will give a thrust from bottom to top on the blade 3, without, as a result of the aforementioned balance of moments, the angle of attack i increasing.

  However, as soon as the ascent of the rotorcraft has started, a reaction force acts up and down on the blade 3 and on the inclined surface 9 of the balancing member 7, so that a moment directed in direction opposite to that of the moment of force Fy momentarily breaks the balance and rotates the blade 3 around its shaft 5, increasing the angle of attack i, until a new equilibrium is established between the forces T, P, Fx, Fy and G and the moments of these forces around the axis of the shaft 5.

   Consequently, we have the position of the blades 3 shown in FIG. 5 and the rotorcraft undergoes a uniform upward movement at constant speed, thanks to the increase in the angle of attack i of the blades 3. In fact, this increase d The angle of attack gives the blades 3 a helical upward movement the angle of which is equal to the difference between the new angle of attack i of the blades 3 and the angle of attack of the blades 3 in hovering flight. The new angle of attack was therefore obtained automatically by simply increasing the force T exerted on the blades 3.

   On the contrary, when the force T applied to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 blades 3 by the motor of the rotor 2, a vertical acceleration of the rotorcraft from top to bottom is first obtained, then the rotorcraft descends, into a new position of equilibrium shown in FIG. 6, at a constant speed. The angle of the propeller described by the blades 3 is equal to the difference between the angle of attack of the hovering blades, as shown in Figure 3, and the new angle of attack, shown in Figure 6. .

   In the equilibrium position, the differences between the rotational speeds of the blades for the three cases examined above are not very important, since the resultant Fy of the lifting forces reduced by Gy must be constant. Only an increase in the load of the rotorcraft or a horizontal movement of the rotorcraft requires an increase in the speed of rotation of the blades 3.

   Indeed, for example in the latter case, given that, on the one hand, to obtain a horizontal movement of a rotorcraft, an inclination, with respect to the vertical, of the plane of the rotor 2 is necessary and that, of on the other hand, the horizontal lifting force Fy is proportional to the projection / of the surface described by the blades while being a direct function of the angle of attack i of the blades as well as of the linear speed of the latter, an increase the speed of rotation of the blades 3 is essential as a result of the reduction in the area of the aforementioned horizontal projection due to the inclination of the plane of the rotor.

   For a helicopter provided with two wings according to the invention, the piloting is practically reduced to the following operations: a dosage by pedal or by handle of the power of the motor of the rotors an acceleration determines the rise of the helicopter, a deceleration determines the descent .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 the manipulation of two levers the inclination of which determines, optionally using a servo-motor, the inclination of each of the two rotors.

   The simultaneous inclination of the two levers forward or backward causes the helicopter to move forward or backward respectively and this at a speed proportional to the degree of the tilt. Given that, in this case, as indicated above, the horizontal projection of the plane of rotation of the propellers decreases, an adjustment of the power of the engine by an action on the handle or on the aforementioned pedal is necessary.

   A differentiated inclination of the two aforementioned levers causes the helicopter to rotate to the left or to the right depending on whether the right or left lever is located furthest forward. By releasing the 2 levers, the device is immobilized in relation to the air in which it is moving.

   The piloting of a rotorcraft, and in particular of a helicopter, is, by the automatic tilting of the blades 3 as described above, become extremely simple.

   Figures 7 to 9 show an airfoil 1 produced according to a second embodiment of the invention and in which the balancing members 7 are integrated into the blades 3 as a result of a twisted shape given to the latter in the direction of their axis of rotation 5. The balancing members 7 are formed by the parts of the blades 3 located near the shaft 4 of the rotor 2. The upper faces 9 of these parts 7 are inclined in the opposite direction to that of the surface bearing 8 of the other parts of the blades 3 with respect to the plane 10 forming with the bearing surface 8 the angle of attack of the blades 3.

   Figures 10 to 12 show a wing 1 made

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 according to a third embodiment of the invention and in which the balancing members 7 are also integrated into the blades 3. These balancing members 7 are formed by widened parts of the blades located near the shaft 4 of the rotor 2. The upper faces 9 of these parts 7 are inclined in the opposite direction to that of the bearing surface 8 of the other narrower parts of the blades 3.

   The aerodynamic phenomena which occur on the blades 3 shown in Figures 7 to 12 are the same as those which occur on the blades 3 shown in Figures 1 to 6 and which have been explained above.

   Figures 13 and 14 show a helicopter provided with a wing 1 according to the invention. This wing 1 has two lateral rotors 2a and 2b arranged on either side of the cabin 14 of the helicopter.

   Each of the rotors 2a and 2b has two blades 3 arranged in the extension of one another and each provided with a balancing member 7 of the type described above. The blades 3 of the rotor 2a are out of phase by 90 with respect to the blades 3 of the rotor 2b. The shafts 4 of the rotors 2a and 2b pivot around a horizontal shaft 15.

   The helicopter engine could for example be a piston engine which would drive either an oil pump supplying two hydraulic motors placed in series and actuating the propellers with the desired reduction, or a reduction gear with two shafts so, etc ..., these different elements not being shown in Figures 7 and 8.

   It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described, but that many variants can be envisaged without departing from the scope of the present patent.

   Thus the wing according to the invention is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 applicable on any kind of gyration: that it can for example consist of a rotor with more than two blades = that the shape of the blades * can deviate from that * of * figure *; etc ,,, CLAIMS
