<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Les figures 9 et 10 montrent deux variantes extrêmes;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Patent. improvements in the establishment of pistons for 4-explosion or combustion engines.
Alexandre G A U S S E, 29 avenue de Nancy, Lunéville (oselle) Franoe.
The present invention relates to improvements made in the construction of pistons for explosive or combustion engines. These improvements make it possible to obtain pistons which are mounted without play in their cylinder and which are however free to expand at the points receiving the heat of the explosion or of the combustion.
These pistons make it possible to obtain the acceleration of the heat exchanges with the walls of the cylinder, and the preservation, with the latter, of an intimate and permanent contact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
operate, without play of any kind, on both sides receiving the normal reactions of the ball, during compression and explosion times.
They are absolutely watertight, an arrangement allowing the sealing of the seals of the segments, whatever their opening, caused by normal wear.
The increase in diameter resulting from the temperature differences by the expansion effect, as well as the take-up of the clearance resulting from normal wear of the cylinder and the piston are compensated by a particular arrangement and by the shape of the piston.
They are constructed in such a way as to prevent any knocking resulting from changes in the obliquity of the connecting rod. To obtain this result, they keep their face which receives the reactions of the explosion permanently applied to the wall of the cylinder. This face has as its bearing the total height of the piston.
The expansion of the bottom of the piston receiving the heat of the explosion is left free to exert, without acting on the expansion of the assembly, or modifying the reaction ranges.
These improvements are characterized in that, between the bottom of the piston carrying the grooves of the segments and the guide skirt, there is provided a continuous solution which develops at an angle at the center of at least 180, this continuous solution thus defining a deformable lip which opposes the part of the piston that the reaction due to the obliquity of the connecting rod maintains contact with the cylinder wall.
The advantage of this is that they provide the piston with absolutely silent operation, maximum diathermic power, an operating temperature barely higher than that of the cylinder walls and wear of the parts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
segments and cylinders zero, avoiding tilting of the piston.
The present invention relates to still other improvements which aim in particular to reduce the overhang of the reaction center of the face of the skirt which is to the left in FIG. 1 or 5, that is to say the face which is pressed against the cylinder during the compression period. These modifications also aim at an increase in the vertical section between the lower part of the indentation or the slot made in the skirt and the lower edge thereof.
The advantage which results from this improvement consists in that it makes it possible to use the normal expansion of the pistons made of light alloy based on aluminum, so that the difference in the temperatures of the reaction faces modifies the shape, of the piston, cold or at a uniform temperature, this change in shape exerting such that the generatrices of the piston remain parallel to themselves, and that the diameter passing through the axis of the boss undergoes an increase greater than that that the perpendicular diameter undergoes, the latter having to remain, according to the invention, constantly equal to that of the cylinder.
It goes without saying that any other arrangement than that described below made it possible to obtain this result, either by incorporation into face 3 or 2 (fig. 5) of a metal of different expansion which could increase the reduction effect. of the diameter AB, or by localized slits, are included in this invention.
This method of construction of the piston of this fig.5 can be translated as follows: Given a piston whose head is circular! and of diameter a, the height of this head being limited by the upper edge of the deformable lip, Him
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
following,. an elliptical skirt whose minor axis is equal to a, One of the vertices of the major, axis of the ellipse is; opposite to the deformable lip, and is based on a generator of the head. In addition, the projection of the center of the head on the plane of the ellipse is on the major axis.
The natural expansion effect of the piston described exhibits this peculiarity that the ellipse of the skirt expands more along its minor axis, so that, assuming that the diameter of the head occurs, under the effect of the heat received, to equal that of the cylinder, the ellipse of the skirt continues to deform to form a perfect circle, without there being any pressure on the walls of the cylinder.
In addition, the shape given to the piston enables it to correct, to an appreciable extent, the wear of the reaction faces caused by the friction against the cylinder, this correction being obtained by the molecular tension which the piston undergoes during its operation.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings by way of example and schematically.

Figure 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of Figure 5.
FIG. 8 is a view similar to that of FIG. 6, part of the wall of the piston being cut away in order to show the interior of the latter and the detail of the attachment of the face to the assembly.
Figures 9 and 10 show two extreme variants;
The piston being turned to the dimension of the bore of the cylinder, one will designate (Fig. 1 and 2) by A, the face receiving the reactions of the cylinder caused by the obliquity of the connecting rod during the explosion and B the opposite face.
E represents a notch (Fig.l and 2) which partly isolates the face B from the mass of the piston. his face B is connected to the assembly by the diametral parts F-G.
The heat of the explosion received in D by the piston will spread throughout its mass, but can only pass into B through parts F-G, with a decreasing intensity from F to G.
The expansion resulting from the increase in temperature flowing through these parts will increase the diameter B-A, with a maximum in J following the dotted line I.
This reaction of part B will momentarily apply face A against the cylinder wall,
Thus the absence and the catching up of play are realized.
This arrangement also promotes the acceleration of temperature exchanges between the piston and the walls.
EMI5.1
#of the cylinder.
The diathermic power of this piston will therefore be maximum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The rise in temperature of the bottom of the piston causing its expansion, this one, aera free to be exerted if one practices on the length,. Of the piston located between the bottom D and the upper part of the notch E an excen- tration (fig. 3) having a value greater than that of the normal expansion. The eccentric circle must have its center on the diameter A-B and cut the pitch circle at the points L and M defined by the center angle which is the contact angle of the face of the piston in the cylinder.
The sealing segment (s) will be ergonomic so that the seals are located around point A (fig. 3), the coincidence of the circles .. carrying the piston and the segments being delimited by LM, the gases under pressure are unable to find a way out from this limit LM to A.
In the second embodiment of the piston according to Figures 5 to 10, 1 denotes the piston rotates at the bore dimension of the cylinder so as to be mounted without play, By 1 is denoted the face receiving the reactions of the cylinder caused by l 'obliquity of the connecting rod during the period of the explosion and 3 indicates the opposite face, that is to say that which receives the reactions of the cylinder during the period of compression. In this piston is made a slot 4 delimiting the deformable lip 5.
This slot begins in the bore 6 of the seat of the piston pin to end in the opposite bore 7.
It partially isolates face 3 from the mass of the piston, which face is connected to the assembly by the diametrical parts between the points 8,9. It is noted that the vertical section between these two points is, in this embodiment, much greater than in known pistons of this type, which contributes to reinforcing the solidity of the piston at this location. As we see, the slit
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
first has a horizontal part 10, then an inclined part 11 and finally adorn a horizontal part 12 passing under the head of the piston, but this shape is only indicative, it can be any.
The development of this slot is not necessarily limited according to the value of the reactions to which the face 3 must be subjected, it may extend beyond the bores 6, 7 or even emerge in the top of these bores as indicated in the figures and 10 passing through all the intermediaries, This slot thermally insulating face 2.of face 3, must allow deformation of the piston by elastic bending, face 3 being considered as an oscillating arc from its attachment points delimited according to the generator of the cylinder.
For this purpose, it is detached from the bosses along the grid (Figs. 5,9,10). note at A (fig. 8) the section of this fastener along line 8-9, fig.5, and at 14 the isolation of the boss.
In addition, another point lies in the comparative reduction in diameter A-B with respect to diameter C-D, which reduction is obtained by the normal play of the expansion inherent in the increase in temperature arriving through the bottom of the piston. In order to promote the reduction in the diameter AB and, therefore, the increase in the diameter CD, the wall of face 3 is, at 13, fig. 7, somewhat thinned compared to the wall of face 2. This thinning extends preferably over the entire inner part of the deformable lip '5 included in the angle [alpha]. Face 2, receiving the heat from the bottom of the piston, expands and, under the effect of this expansion,
the diameter CD will increase without constraint and the arc of this face will take the position as indicated in dotted line in figure 7, on the other hand the diameter AB, half of which is represented by the thermally insulated part, will not follow not this progression, but the arc
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
delimiting face 3 will open, / the chord of this arc being integral with the diameter C-D. Therefore, the arrow of this arc will decrease according to; the. temperature difference of faces 2 and and depending on the coefficient of expansion of the metal used; if the piston is turned oval - the large axis corresponding to the diameter C-D - nothing opposes this deformation of the piston in the cylinder.
Compensation for wear by friction in the cylinder of faces 2 and 3 is obtained by the molecular tension exerted in the opposite parts, face 2 (fig. 7) opening according to the diameter CD under the effect of the expansion alots as the face mows to oppose this opening. The tensions of face 2 will tend, under repeated influence, to reduce the diameter L-D, while the inertia of face 3 will tend to increase it. If the piston is set up so that the mass of metal distributed in face 2 is sufficient to cancel out the stresses on face 3, the permanent deformation will tend to contract part C-A-D and increase A-B.
