Piston.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig.l est une élévation latérale d'un piston obtenu en une seule pièce par coulée,dont la fig.2 est une coupe axiale établie dans un plan qui passe par l'axe des coussinets pour le tourillon; la fig.3 est une coupe axiale dans un plan perpendiculaire au plan de coupe de la fig.2; la fig.4 est une coupe transversale suivant la ligne 4-4 de la fig.2; la fig. est une coupe transversale sui- vant la ligne 5-5 de la fig.2; la fig.6 est une coupe axiale d'un piston avec manchon rapporté dont la fig.7 est la vue d'extré- mité. Les fig.8-13 montrent d'autres façons de réaliser l'union élastique entre le manchon et la tête rigide dans le cas d'un pi- ston moulé en une seule pièce: les fig.14-16 montrent des moyens pour limiter la contraction élastique du manchon;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Piston.
The invention relates to pistons for engines, and in particular to pistons made of light alloy consisting of a completely rigid head (comprising the bottom, a crown for the elastic segments and the bearings for the journal) and by a traversed sleeve. by a longitudinal slit.
According to the invention, the head and the sleeve are connected, rigidly to each other in the axial direction and elastically in the radial direction, by parts which terminate in the sleeve near its longitudinal slot.
In this way the two elements of the piston (head and sleeve) are firmly connected together without prejudice to the fullest elasticity of the sleeve which can adapt to the cylinder of the engine under operating conditions.
The invention also includes other features for preventing excessive deformation of the elastic sleeve and for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the use of an attached sleeve, as well as an advantageous mode of obtaining such an elastic piston.
In the accompanying drawing are shown, by way of example, some embodiments of the invention.
Fig.l is a side elevation of a piston obtained in one piece by casting, of which Fig.2 is an axial section established in a plane which passes through the axis of the bearings for the journal; Fig.3 is an axial section in a plane perpendicular to the section plane of Fig.2; Fig.4 is a cross section taken on line 4-4 of Fig.2; fig. is a cross section taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 2; FIG. 6 is an axial section of a piston with an added sleeve, of which FIG. 7 is the end view. Figs. 8-13 show other ways of achieving the elastic union between the sleeve and the rigid head in the case of a piston molded in one piece: figs. 14-16 show means to limit elastic contraction of the sleeve;
fig.17 shows another type of piston with a sleeve attached to the rigid head, and fig.18 and 19 show a detail of the elastic connection between the head and the sleeve.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1-5, the piston consists of a hollow body with a bottom l, a crown 2 traversed on the outside by the grooves 3 for the elastic segments, and a smooth sleeve 4. From the bottom l, which can be traversed at the interior by ribs 5, and of the crown 2, are integral with the blocks 6,6 'pierced with ooaxial holes which constitute the bearings for the journal of the connecting rod.
To securely reel the two 0.6 ′ blout with the base 1 and with the crown 2, the piston head includes 7.7 ′ fins which extend into the space limited by the manohon 4 and which, in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
oonsidered, are connected to this sleeve in two longitudinal regions parallel to the inner flank of the blocks 6,6 '.
On the other side with respect to the axis of the bloos 6,6 ', the manohon 4 is traversed by a longitudinal slot 8 and on both sides of this slot are connected to the internal surface of the sleeve the ends of two arrows. 9,9 'which start from the head, or they are connected to the bottom 1 or to the crown 2 or to both and which extend for a certain portion in the space limited by the sleeve 4.
The sleeve 4 and the crown 2 are separated from each other by an interval 10 which surrounds the blocks 6,6 'on the side furthest from the bottom 1 and which extends over a large part of the circumference, up to against the outer flanks of the fins 7,7 'between which, as visible in fig.5, the wall comprises an internal rib 11 which connects the sleeve 4 to the ring 2.
This uninterrupted portion of the rib 11 and the fins 7,7 'spaced apart from each other and which extend over a certain portion in the longitudinal direction of the sleeve 4, create between the head and the sleeve of the piston a rigid connection limited to a narrow region of the sleeve, the rest of which, on the contrary, may yield elastically because of the slot 8 and its circumferential separation from the head. Indeed, the arrows 9.9 ', while serving to connect, in the axial direction, the head of the piston with the manohon 4, do not hinder the transverse deformability of the sleeve 4 because of their flexibility due to their length and to their low section.
The union between the sleeve 4 and the crown 2 could also be entrusted only to the fins 7,7 ', in which case the gap 10 is extended between these fins.
The fins 7.7 'can be more or less apart one of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the other and be connected to the sleeve 4 on a longer or longer portion; there could also be a single fin or they could be in number greater than two. Similarly, the arrows 9, 9 'can have a greater or lesser length.
The piston therefore has the necessary rigidity in the head and in a more or less extensive sector of the sleeve 4, where the lateral pressure 1a is exerted. stronger of the piston, while for the rest the sleeve 4 can deform freely in the direction of the diameter, leaving the relative position of the bearings 6,6 'for the journal unaltered. We can therefore give this manohon a diameter slightly greater than that of the cylinder, to ensure its perfect contact with the internal surface of the cylinder also after @ and despite some wear, and despite this / the variations due to heating, the piston does not get stuck in the cylinder.
The sleeve, instead of being molded in one piece with the head, could form a separate piece and be attached to a frame which includes the head of the piston.
An example of a piston of this type is shown in Figs. 6 and 7 where 1 still indicates the bottom of the piston, 2 its grooved crown and 6.6 'the bearings for the connecting rod journal. The fins 7,7 'which connect these pads 6,6' with the bottom 1 and with the crown 2, as well as the arrows 9,9 ', form a single piece with the crown 2 and they are limited, along their length. outer edges, by portions of cylindrical surfaces which form the supports for mounting the sleeve 4 '.
In the example shown, the fins 7,7 'are joined at the outer end by a cylindrical sector 11' which may or may not be connected to the ring 2 and which constitutes the support for the man-. chon 4 ', the arrows 9.9' forming at their free end legs
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
constituted for example by folded appendages 12,12 '. The fins 7,7 'could also be separated from each other on their outer edges and possibly form expansions on said edges; said arrows 9, 9 'could include, at their ends, portions of different shape for their connection with the sleeve 4'.
This sleeve 4 ', which can be in rolled or drawn metal, is fixed to the fins 7.7' or to the sector 11 'and to the arrows 9.9' using screws or nails 13 engaged in corresponding holes of the sleeve. and fins or arrows.
Figs. 8 and 9 show in axial section two types of pistons similar to that shown in fig. 1-5, with the difference that the elastic union between the rigid head 1,2 and the sleeve 4 in the region traversed by the longitudinal slot 8 is made by arrows 16, each connected by one end to the sleeve 4 and by the other end to one of the bearings 6,6 ′ integral with the base 1 and the crown 2.
The arrows 16 must be sufficiently flexible in the transverse direction of the sleeve 4, which is achieved or to. because of their small cross-section or because of their length or because of these two conditions at the same time, while in the radial and longitudinal direction of the piston the arrows have sufficient dimensions to ensure the union between the rigid head and the sleeve in the longitudinal direction of the piston. The arrows 16 start from the blocks 6,6 'and they are deflected to connect with the sleeve 4 near the edge adjacent to the crown 2 (fig.8) or near the opposite edge (fig.9).
In the case of Figs. 10 and 11, which show respectively in axial section and in end view another embodiment of the piston, the sleeve 4 and the crown 2 are separated by an inter-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
valle 10 which extends over the entire circumference, and said parts are connected by the bearings 6,6 'which on the one hand are connected to the bottom 1 by fins 17,17' and on the other hand are connected to the sleeve chon 4 by 7,7 'fins.
The elastic union with the sleeve 4, on both sides of the longitudinal slot 8, is effected by two blades 18,18 'parallel to the axial plane perpendicular to the axis of the journal, these blades connecting, by one end, with the sleeve 4 in the region between the roots of the fins 7,7 'and, by the other end, with the sleeve 4 near the slot 8.
These blades 18,18 'are separated from the bearings 6,6', being perforated with holes where said bearings take place with play and, because of their small thickness and their length, they allow the sleeve 4 to yield elastically in the direction transverse.
Figs. 12 and 13 show, in axial section, two forms of execution of the piston which differ from the type shown in figs. 1-5 by the way of elastically connecting the sleeve 4 to the rigid head.
In the case of FIG. 12, the arrows 9 are connected, by one end, to the sleeve 4 and by the other end to the fins 17 which connect the bottom 1 and the ring 2 to the blocks 6 constituting the cushions for the journal. In the case of FIG. 13, the arrows 9 are connected by one end to the sleeve 4 and by the other end to. crown 2.
-Fig.14 and 15 show, respectively in axial section and in end view, a piston of the type shown in Figs. 1-5. And in which the elastic deformation of the sleeve 4 cannot exceed a determined value.
For this purpose, vis-à-vis the inner edge of the arrows 9,9 'are formed on the sides of the bearings 6,6', projections 19,19 'oon-. be which the arrows 9,9 'come to press when the sleeve
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
4 has undergone the desired maximum deformation.
In this way the sleeve 4 can yield only up to a certain point and by suitably fixing the distance which exists under the conditions of rest between the edges vis-à-vis the projections 19,
19 'and arrows 9,9', it can be obtained that the elastic deformation of the sleeve 4, when in operation in the cylinder, does not exceed the elastic limit of the metal. This avoids the possibility that in the case where the cylinder is strongly heated, the metal of the sleeve 4 undergoes a permanent deformation under excessive stress due to abnormal operation.
For the same purpose also serve the appendages 20,20 '(fig. 16) which protrude from the bearings 6,6'.
This result can of course also be achieved by means of stops arranged at any point of the part of the piston which is rigidly connected to the head and on which the sleeve 4 will bear after a deformation of a determined magnitude. Instead of using cumulatively, as in fig. 14 and l, stops 19 and
20, one could also adopt only one of the two types of these judgments.
The same result can also be achieved, as can be seen in fig.l, both in the case of pistons molded in one piece as in the case of pistons with an attached elastic sleeve, by fitting the bearings 6,6 'with tabs inserts 24 which engage in housings 25 with which the internal face of the sleeve 4 'is provided.
Also in this case, by leaving a suitable clearance between the ends of the tongues 24 and the bottom of the housings 25, an elastic connection is obtained between the rigid head and the elastic sleeve in the region of the longitudinal slot 8 and at the same time the limitation of the contractions of the sleeve 4 'before they exceed
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the elastic limit of the metal.
Finally, to improve the elasticity of the connection between the rigid head 1,2 of the piston and the elastic sleeve 4 or 4 ', it is useful to give the members which make this connection a shape which ensures progressive bending, and, in particular, to give the arrows a gradually decreasing cross section from their attachment to the rigid head.
In fig.18 and 19 is shown this detail for the arrows 9,9 'of a piston of the type shown in fig.l-.
In the case of fig.18, each arrow 9 has a decreasing thickness, while in the case of fig.19 the arrows 9 have a decreasing width. These conditions can be combined with one another and applied separately or cumulatively to arrows of different shape (such as those 16 or 18) intended to elastically connect the sleeve 4 to the rigid part of the piston.
In all the embodiments described of this piston, its body is effectively elastic, so that it can be introduced already elastically deformed into the engine cylinder, that is to say the sleeve 4 or 4 'of the piston. may have, before it is introduced into the cylinder, an outer diameter slightly larger than the inner diameter of the cylinder.
It is therefore useful, in order to achieve the best sealing conditions for the piston, that its body has an exactly circular section and that it is coaxial with the elastic segments of the rigid head when the piston is in the conditions. normal operation, that is to say when the piston is housed inside the engine cylinder and is expanded as a result of the heating to which it is subjected.
For this purpose it is necessary to construct the sleeve 4 so
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
that when cold it is eccentric, on the side of the longitudinal slot, by an amount corresponding to the deformation it must undergo for its introduction into the cylinder and after the expansion due to its heating Such a condition can be achieved in several ways .
One can for example make the piston with the body of a diameter exactly equal to the internal diameter of the cylinder, taking care that during the casting or during the quenching, or in both these operations, the metal is cooled earlier. inside and outside, for example by injecting a cold fluid inside the piston.
The cut is then made to form the gap 10 which separates the sleeve 4 from the rigid head 1,2, and the cut to form the. longitudinal slot 8 of the sleeve 4, after which this sleeve expands, taking the slightly oval and eccentric shape which will then disappear when the piston is introduced into the cylinder and it is heated.
It is also possible to carry out the separations having the quench and to introduce into the longitudinal slot 8 of the sleeve 4 an insertion of greater thickness than the width of the slot, so as to give the sleeve 4 the eccentricity. wanted. The quenching is then carried out by causing the heating and the cooling in such a way that the thermal variations occur at the same time both inside and outside the piston, by plunging the piston in the appropriate position. in the cold fluid. In this way the eccentric shape that the sleeve 4 has taken on as a result of the introduction of a thickness into its longitudinal slot 8 and which will disappear when the piston is in the cylinder is stabilized.

Or, after having made the cut to separate the rigid head of the sleeve 4 and the longitudinal slot 8 of said sleeve, a permanent deformation of the sleeve 4 will be caused by mechanical means in its expanded and eccentric position.
In all cases, when the piston is not in the cylinder, the sleeve 4 has an eccentric shape and a diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the cylinder, t andis after the forced introduction of the piston into the cylinder. cylinder and when heated, the sleeve assumes a substantially circular section which conforms at all points to the internal surface of the cylinder.
Claims:
1) Piston with rigid head and sleeve made elastic by a longitudinal slot, characterized in that the head and the sleeve
EMI10.1
/ They are connected, rigidly in the axial direction and elastically in the radial direction, by parts which terminate in the sleeve near its longitudinal slot.
