<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
Le bou- ton 67 de la manivelle 66 actionne un système de bielles et leviers, articulé en 68, 69 et 70, qui par l'intermédiaire du bras 71 déplace la mâchoire 61 de l'obturateur de manière à ouvrir ou fermer l'obturateur comme une pince, et qui par l'intermédiaire du bras 72 actionne les commutateurs limi- teurs 73 et 74 ouvrant le circuit du moteur 62 âpres que l'obturateur s'est ouvert ou fermé de la quantité requise consécutivement à la fermeture du circuit par l'interrup- teur 49 ou 50;
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>
<Desc/Clms Page number 24>
<Desc/Clms Page number 25>
<Desc/Clms Page number 26>
<Desc/Clms Page number 27>
<Desc/Clms Page number 28>
<Desc/Clms Page number 29>
<Desc/Clms Page number 30>
<Desc/Clms Page number 31>
<Desc/Clms Page number 32>
<Desc/Clms Page number 33>
<Desc/Clms Page number 34>
<Desc/Clms Page number 35>
<Desc/Clms Page number 36>

<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
A method and apparatus for producing articles of uninterrupted length from flowable materials.
This invention relates to methods and apparatus for controlling the flow of a fluid material, and more particularly to the manufacture of articles of constant shape produced by creeping a fluid material, subject to changes in properties which cause changes in properties. variations in the flow characteristics of the material, such as the variations seen when making rubber thread of constant size by delivering a rubber stream through a spinning device.
Variations in the flow characteristics of the material itself, mainly due to variations in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
viscosity of the material, as for example in the case of latex, or to the change of other properties, such as for example surface tension or osmotic pressure, are automatically counterbalanced so that the article produced by causing the flow to flow. material is of constant shape despite variations in the flow characteristics of the material which would otherwise tend to change the shape of the article produced.
Methods and apparatus for controlling a continuous flow of fluid material are already known. For example, in the spinning of cellulose threads or similar threads, the flow can be regulated by means of positive displacement pumps rotating at constant speed.
While these devices lend themselves perfectly to regulating a flow of certain materials, they cannot be used for regulating a flow of fluids such as rubber latex, which coagulates rapidly in adjusted distributions and valves, by blocking them.
The object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus making it possible to regulate the flow of fluid materials which are not suitable for conventional pumping or gauging, with a view to producing articles thereof of substantially constant shape. It relates in particular to an apparatus for producing by extrusion, spinning or the like, wire of substantially constant cross section, starting from aqueous dispersions of rubber, or containing rubber or similar materials.
It is known to produce rubber yarn, which term includes solid yarns, hollow yarns or tubes and tapes or bands of flat or other form, by creeping or pressure casting a rubber latex composition. or the like, through an orifice of the desired size and shape, in a coagulation bath.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lant the latex, and removing the filiform coagulum from the bath to subject it to subsequent operations such as drying, vulcanization and talcage.
In these processes; the size of the yarn varies with the rate at which the filiform coagulum is removed from the bath, the pressure of the latex column, the specific weight of the latex and the viscosity of the latex. The speed of extraction of the filiform coagulum can easily be kept constant, for example by means of a pulley or belt of extraction at constant speed.
The latex pressure or column can be kept constant by various means such as constant pressure feed tanks or spring suspended feed tanks to keep the hydrostatic column constant.
The specific gravity of the same latex composition does not vary significantly with the temperature changes which normally occur from time to time during manufacture. However, the viscosity of the latex varies markedly with changes in temperature and to some extent with the age of the latex, and these changes in viscosity, which necessarily vary the flow characteristics of the latex, are sufficient to vary the thickness considerably. of the yarn produced, when other factors, such as the nozzle capacity, the rate of extraction of the formed filament, the pressure or column of latex and the specific gravity of the latex, are held constant.
With the aid of the apparatus described below, the effect of changes in the viscosity of the latex is obviated and it is possible to produce rubber thread of constant size by causing latex to flow through an orifice, despite variations in the flow characteristics of the latex.
In general, to maintain constant the shape or size of articles produced by creeping a material
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
liquid, it is necessary to maintain constant the ratio between the arrival or rate of consumption of the material and the departure or rate of production of the articles. Obviously, when using the same mass of material more articles are produced at one time than at another, or longer articles, or when more material is used for the same number of articles or for the same length of articles, articles produced at these different times do not have the same shape or size.
According to the present invention, to this end, apparatuses for producing articles of continuous length from fluent materials which are creeped by extrusion or otherwise are provided with devices measuring the production rate of the article. compared to the rate of consumption of the fluid material. In addition, devices are provided for detecting variations in the ratio of the rate of production to the rate of consumption relative to a determined standard, which is known or calculated to ensure the correct shape of the article. , and devices serving to automatically counterbalance these variations so that the transverse dimensions or section of the article are kept substantially constant.
There are various ways of measuring the rate of consumption of the flowable material relative to the rate of production of the articles and of varying either rate in order to maintain a ratio. constant corresponding to a determined standard; will describe them below in their application to the manufacture of rubber thread, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings, given by way of example, in which:

In the rubber thread manufacturing process illustrated by the drawings, latex in a coagulant is flowed or extruded under hydraulic pressure through nozzles or dies and the coagulated filaments are discharged from the coagulant by feeding them by means of pulleys. of traction at constant speed on a conveyor belt to subject them to finishing operations such as drying, vulcanization and the like. The latex is discharged from an intermittently filling tank, which is suspended from a spring mechanism keeping the hydrostatic column constant, to compensate for the lowering of the hydrostatic column due to the consumption of latex.
A determined weight of latex consumed each time the bin is empty serves as a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
heel to compare the lengths of yarn produced using such an amount of latex or the time required to produce that yarn. This weighing mechanism is combined with a length or time measuring instrument used to regulate the flow of latex. The apparatus comprises an instrument for measuring the length of travel of the belt or the time required by the belt to complete a run, and this instrument thus indicates the length of yarn produced as a result of the consumption of a determined weight of latex .
When the length of wire corresponding to such a defined weight of latex is greater than a standard of determined length for which this weight provides a wire of the correct size, the motor controlled by the measuring instrument automatically raises the hydrostatic column of latex. so as to increase the upstream pressure and hence the rate of the latex flow and thereby produce from such a weight of latex a shorter and thicker yarn. Conversely, when the measured wire length is less than the standard, the motor controlled by the measuring instrument lowers the hydrostatic column so as to produce less pressure at the nozzles and thus slow down the rate of the flow of latex, d Wherein a longer and less coarse yarn results from this determined and weighed latex weight.
Another method of comparing the rate of latex consumption to the rate of yarn production is to measure the weight of latex consumed for the production of a determined length of yarn or, which is the same when an extraction pulley or belt is used at constant speed, - the quantity of latex consumed in a given time. This is achievable, for example, by means of a drip tray combined with a supply line and a dropping device such as an "electric eye" operating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a counter or measuring device via a relay.
To vary the rate of consumption or rate of flow of the latex in order to maintain constant the ratio between the rate of consumption of latex and the rate of yarn production, it is also possible to use methods other than those described herein. above, consisting in raising or lowering the hydrostatic column. For example, one can vary a fluid pressure superimposed on the hydrostatic pressure and, of course, when discharging the latex from a pressurized fluid reservoir rather than a simple hydrostatic column, one can vary the pressure in the tank. tank itself when there are variations in the ratio between the rate of consumption and the rate of production.
As a further example, the resistance to flow in the supply line can be varied, for example by means of a valve device and having a plunger of varying effective length in a portion of the line. 'food.
It is also possible to vary the speed of the flow, to counterbalance the variations in the ratio between consumption and production, by constituting a part of the supply line by a rubber tube under tension which is varied. the diameter by lengthening or releasing it by the desired amount, so as to adjust the flow rate.
The viscosity of the latex itself in the feed line can be varied to compensate for changes in viscosity in the latex mass by means of a heating element surrounding a part of the feed line and reacting. changes in the ratio of the rate of latex consumption to the rate of yarn production.
Instead of varying the rate of consumption of
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
latex, in order to keep the ratio between the rate of consumption of latex and the rate of yarn production constant, it is also possible to vary the rate of yarn production. The easiest way to vary the production rate in this way is to change the speed of the pulley and belt drive mechanism in accordance with the variations in the ratio of the rate of consumption to the rate of consumption. production rate relative to a determined standard.
As can be seen, there are a wide variety of methods for comparing the rate of consumption of latex to the rate of yarn production and for varying either the rate of consumption or the rate of production, with a view to compensate or correct the deviations of the ratio of these paces relative to a determined standard.
These various methods have been related to the present method of manufacturing yarn, but the principle also applies well to the regulation of the flow of a fluid when it is desired to operate by directly regulating the weight of the material employed. rather than adjusting the volume as is done with positive displacement pumps and similar devices; the same principle is also applicable to a variety of other manufacturing processes in which articles are produced by creeping a fluid material subject to changes in its properties which have the effect of varying the characteristics of its flow. In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the letters A through G denote the main parts of the regulating apparatus for maintaining constant the thickness of the rubber thread in the present exemplary embodiment of the invention.
The apparatus A and the motor-operated clamp shutter mechanism F act as a weighing device for measuring a fixed or determined weight of latex consumed during a spinning operation. The device B together with the electric switch G measures the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
length of yarn produced or the time which elapses during the consumption of such a weight determines latex, and it further carries a device for comparing with a determined length standard this length of yarn produced which, when produced comes from the same weight of latex, gives the correct size yarn. The C-motor lift mechanism provides power to raise or lower the latex supply column as needed.
A remote control change-over relay D controls the circuits which actuate the motor-driven lifting mechanism C. An interlocking relay E controls the circuits which coordinate the times of the weighing and length measuring operations of A and B.
The latex weighing apparatus A and F will be described in detail below.
At the upper end of the upright 20, placed on a plinth or base 2le is located, as shown in FIG. 2, a sliding gear 22 comprising an upper arm 23 from which is suspended a latex feeder 24 and on which is supported a switch-regulator mechanism for actuating the motor-controlled clamping shutter mechanism F, which opens and closes in due time the latex feed line to fill the tank. The crew 22 also includes a lower arm 25 to which are rigidly fixed two metal siphon pipes 26 and 27, each of which plunges at one end just below the level of the latex contained in the tank 24.
At the other end of the siphon 26 is connected a latex inlet pipe 28 and at the other end of the siphon 27 is connected a latex flow pipe 29 which delivers the latex; from the tank, by a ramp 30, to a series of nozzles or dies 31 immersed in a coagulating bath 32. The coagulated filaments 33 formed in the coagulating bath are extracted therefrom by a pulley
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
extractor 34 rotating at constant speed and then pass over an endless belt 35 moving at a uniform speed which leads them to drying and other operations.
The extraction pulley and the belt may have the same peripheral speed or the belt may move faster than the extraction pulley to reduce the size of the wire formed, and in this case the method preferably comprises an intermediate operation of stretching and softening. Crew 22 is held in position on the support
20 by means of a cable 36, connected at its top, which passes over a pulley 37 and which is wound on a drum 200 of the motorized lifting device C which, when it becomes necessary to correct the height of the hydrostatic column, raises or lowers 1.'equip 22 on a determined and limited course, each time it undergoes an excitation, as is described in detail below.
The latex container 24 is suspended from a spring 38, the upper end of which is adjustably fitted to the upper arm 23 by means of a clip 39 which locks the end of the spring in an adjustment sleeve 40 held in the arm 23 by a rim, as shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 5. The length of the spring in the sleeve 40 can be adjusted so that it lengthens by one centimeter for each additional centimeter of latex height in the tray 24. When the spring is adjusted in this way, the The level of latex remains constant, whether the tank is empty or full, given that the tank rises and falls and thus maintains a constant hydrostatic column with respect to the nozzles 31, for a determined position of the crew 22.
From the tank 24 leaves vertically a silk thread 41 passing through the spring 38 and the sleeve 40 and this silk thread is fixed at a point on the periphery of a pulley 42 which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
journaled at 44 near the top of a vertical support 45 adapted to the arm 23. The silk thread is extended around the pulley to a counterweight 43. To the flat cheek of the pulley are fixed a finger 46 and tabs attachment 47 and 48, which support two mercury switches 49 and 50 in the axis of the pulley. It can be seen from the drawing that, when the tank 24 empties or fills, the pulley rotates either in the opposite direction or in the direction of clockwise and that the finger goes down or up. The finger 46 is arranged to respectively touch two contacts 51 and 52 of a dial 53 when it goes up or down while the tank is filling or emptying.
The position of the contacts 51 and 52 can be adjusted on the dial 53, and these contacts are used to measure, during the downward movement of the finger 46, a determined or constant weight of latex used for the spinning, the spring suspension 38 of the tank. latex 24 acting as a dynamometer.
Apparatus B compares this weight of latex to the length of yarn produced or the time required to make such a length of yarn using such a weight of latex.
The mercury switch 49 mounted in the axis of the pulley 42 is used to start the shutter motor in the direction in which it opens the latex supply shutter inserted in the latex inlet pipe 28 by which the tank 24 is supplied, and the switch 50, mounted in the same axis, serves to start the shutter motor in the direction in which it closes the shutter and clamps the pipe when the tank is filled. The construction of these rotary mercury switches is shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4 and it is known per se. The switch has a glass cylinder 54 furnished with electrodes 55 and 56 at each end. In the middle of the switch is a
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
barrier or partition 57 of insulating material which is pierced between its center and its periphery with a small hole 58.
When the switch turns to the position for which the mercury 59, which only partially fills the switch, can pass through the hole 58, contact is made between the electrodes 55 and 56, and when it turns to the position for which the mercury leaves the hole, the ignition is switched off. Switch 49 is mounted so that it makes contact, and starts the motor to open the shutter, whenever finger 46 assumes a certain position below contact 52 on the dial. The switch 50 is mounted so as to start the motor to close the shutter, for a certain position of the finger above the contact 51. This is necessary so that the latex is not fed to the tank 24 when the finger 46 touches contacts 51 and 52 or moves between them.
Switches are constructed to maintain contact for a longer time than required to open or close the shutter and the shutter motor will automatically stop in the required position for the shutter under the action limit switches, as described below.
The construction of the shutter mechanism F mounted at the base of the post 21 is shown in FIG. 1 and the connection diagram for the shutter motor and mercury switches 49 and 50 is shown in detail in FIG. 6. The latex inlet hose 28 goes from a supply tank (not shown) to the latex tank 24 passing between the fixed jaw 60 and the clamping jaw 61 of the shutter 60, 61, actuated by the motor and cooperating with the fixed jaw.
The shutter current reversal motor 62, starting in one direction or in the direction
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
reverse as a result of the operation of switches 49 and 50 which make contacts and cause the field windings 63 and 64 to be energized, respectively, of motor 62 (see, Fig. 6), is connected through a gearbox reduction gear 65 to a crank 66.
The button 67 of the crank 66 actuates a system of connecting rods and levers, articulated at 68, 69 and 70, which by means of the arm 71 moves the jaw 61 of the shutter so as to open or close the shutter. like a clamp, and which by means of the arm 72 actuates the limit switches 73 and 74 opening the circuit of the motor 62 after the shutter has opened or closed by the required quantity following the closing of the circuit by switch 49 or 50;
furthermore, the system of connecting rods and levers actuates by means of the arm 75 mercury switches 76 and 77 shown in detail in FIG. 7, for the purposes specified hereinafter, the left side of FIG. 7 showing the arm 75 when the clip-on shutter is closed and the right side showing it when the shutter is open.
As can be seen in more detail in FIG. 6, the circuit controlling the opening and closing of the latex line by shutter 60, 61, goes from one line conductor L1 to the other line conductor L2 through conductor 78, terminal 79 , the rotary mercury switch 49 or 50, - depending on whether one or the other is closed -, the conductor 80 or 81, the limit switch 73 or 74, - before one or the other of these is opened mechanically by the arm 72 -, the terminal 82 or 83, the conductor 84 or 85, the field winding 63 or 64 -, all depending on whether one or other of the inter - breakers 49 and 50 is closed, the rotor 86 and the conductor 87.

It has been described how the contacts 51 and 52 and the finger 46 of the apparatus A weigh a determined weight of latex.
The apparatus B measures in cooperation with the electric switch G the length of yarn produced from such a determined weight of latex, or the time required to consume that weight of latex, and it also carries a device for comparing the length of yarn measured at the correct yarn length or standard length of the desired size that should be produced from such a weight of latex.
The apparatus B, shown schematically in FIG. 1, has the form of a totalizing flow meter which records by means of a style, on a sheet, the length of wire produced during the time required by the finger 46 of the apparatus A to pass during its downward movement of contact 51 to contact 52. In order to compare the length of wire produced with the determined length standard corresponding to the determined weight of latex consumed, the style mechanism has been associated with a contact device, shown in detail on the drawings. Figs. 12 and 13, which compares to the determined standard the length of yarn actually produced from such a determined weight of latex.
The traction pulley 34 of the spinning device has a cam 100 which, while rotating, passes in front of the arm 101 of the electric switch G and rotates it so that the circuit branched off from the line L1 by the conductor 102 opens. contact 103 of the conductor 104 and closes on contact 105 of the conductor 106. After the passage of the cam 100, the contact 103 returns to the closed position and the contact 105 to the open position. Optionally, the switch G can be combined with a cam fitted on a roller of the endless belt instead of being fitted on the extraction pulley.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
The flow totalizer B has a rotary motor 107 whose field winding is directly connected to lines L1 and L2 by conductors 108 and
109. The torque is transmitted by the armature 110 of the motor and the gear 111 of the armature, through gears
112 and 113, to an escape wheel 114. The escape balancer 115 and the escape pawl 116 pivot under the alternating pulses of the electric switch G, in the following manner.
During the rotation of the extraction pulley 34, if the engagement relay E is energized and if the arm 101 is in contact with the pulley 34 and not with the cam 100, the circuit serving to rotate the exhaust pawl goes from one line conductor L1 to the other line conductor
L2 by conductor 102, contact 103, conductor 104, terminal 117, coil 118 of magnet 119, terminal 120, conductor 121, contact 122, - which is closed when the closing relay E is excited, as is described below, - the coiled conductor 123 attached to the movable part of the contact 122, the terminal 124 and the conductor 125.
When the cam 100 engages with the arm 101, the circuit goes from the line conductor L1 to the line conductor L2 through the conductor 102, the contact 105, the conductor 106, the coil 127 of the magnet 128, the terminal 120, conductor 12, contact 122, - which is closed when the closing relay E is energized, as described below, - coiled conductor 123, terminal 124 and conductor 125.
The alternating pulses imparted to the magnets 119 and 128 rotate the balance 115 and the escape pawl 116, and the escape wheel 114 advances by one tooth with each double pulse, when the cam 100 engages and comes in. out of, taken with arm 101 of switch G.
Wheel rotation

exhaust 114 is transmitted by a helical wheel 129, wedged on the common shaft 130 of the gear 113 and of the escape wheel 114, to a helical pinion 131 mounted on a shaft 132 at the other end of which is attached another helical gear 133 meshing with a helical gear 134 which drives the shaft 135 of the entry style arm. The pinion shaft 132 rotates in a collar 136 articulated at 137 on an arm 138 which is articulated at 139 on the frame 140 of a magnet 141. When the coil 142 of the magnet 141 is energized, it attracts the pinion. helical 133 out of the teeth of helical pinion 134, shaft 132 pivoting around shaft 130 and helical wheel 129 remaining in engagement with pinion 131.
When the helical gear 133 is disengaged from the teeth of the helical gear 134, the stylus shaft can return to the zero position, as will be described below. The coil 142 energizes to disengage the helical wheel 134 from the pinion 133 during the filling of the latex tank.
At all other times a spring 140 'keeps the helical pinion 133 engaged.
The circuit to energize the coil 142 during the filling of the latex tank goes from the line conductor L1 to the line conductor L2 through the conductor 143, the mercury switch 77 of the arm 75 of the connecting rod system and connected levers. to the gripper shutter 60, 61 actuated by a motor, - this switch being closed when the gripper is open (see right-hand position in Fig. 7) -, the conductor 144, the coil 142 of the magnet 141 and the conductor 145. Mercury switch 77 is open and interrupts field coil 142 when clamp 60, 61 is closed.
There is shown in detail in FIGS. 12 and 13 the style mechanism and the contact mechanism for comparing to a gauge the length of wire produced from a standard.

determined weight of latex and graphically reproduced on a sheet at the end of the stroke of the style which began when finger 46 touched contact 51 and which was completed when finger 46 touched contact 52.
Style arm shaft 135, which is driven by helical gear 134 when helical gear 133 meshes with helical gear, rotates in bearings 146 and 147 attached to face 148 of counter B. At the end of the 'tree
135, opposite the helical wheel 134, is attached the style arm 149; for this purpose a fork 150 is attached to the top of the style arm 149 ′ and is articulated at 151 and 152 on a cross member 153 fixed perpendicular to the shaft 135. Beyond the point of suspension 152, the cross member 153 carries a counter - weight 154 for the style arm 149, which tends to rotate the shaft 135 of the style arm in the opposite direction to that imparted to the shaft by the helical gear 134 and pinion 133. A tank style 155 is attached at arm 149 near the tip of the style.
This creates an imbalance and applies the style 155 against the sheet 157 with sufficient pressure for the inking to be good. At panel 148 of instrument B, near the plane of oscillation of style arm 149, is disposed a sheet 157 which is a web of controlled motion paper fed at uniform speed by any clockwork movement. or asynchronous motor (not shown).
As the helical gear 133 rotates the helical gear 134, the styling arm shaft 135 oscillates along the sheet 157, as shown in FIG. 12. The stylus arm is articulated and suspended from the end of shaft 135.
Style movement is slow when it measures the length of yarn produced from the determined weight of latex and ink is cut from the style to maintain a bond.
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
capillary between the style and the paper, as in the usual practice of recording devices. When the style arm comes to the end of its travel, that is, when the finger 46 touches the contact 52, the motorized lifting device C is started, if necessary, as is. described below, to raise or lower the latex column.
When, as described above, the shutter 60,61 opens under the action of the mercury switch 49 and the motor 62 for a certain position of the finger 46 below the contact 52, as described above, the winding 142 of the magnet 141 is energized and the pinion 133 is disengaged from the helical wheel 134. However, the counterweight 154 of the arm 153 tends to rotate the shaft 135. and oscillates arm 149 back to zero position of style 155. The style is stopped in zero position by a stud 158, mounted on one face of helical wheel 134, which strikes a stop bracket 159 attached to back of panel 148 of meter B.
When the style swings back to the zero position, the speed of travel is so great that the ink capillary bond between style 155 and sheet 157 breaks and no line is drawn. Since the sheet advances slowly and continuously, as described above, the style returns to zero at the desired distance above the zero of the previous measurement, so that the sheet graphically shows the actual yarn length resulting from the determined weight of latex, when a measurement is made.
The mechanism for comparing the length of wire produced from the determined weight of latex, or the time required to produce that length of wire, is mounted in front of panel 148 of instrument B, near the mechanism to
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
style, on a bracket 160 attached to panel 148 by means of screws 161 and 162 passing through spacers 162 and screwed into panel 148. A contact arm 164 is clamped to bracket 160 by means of a screw assembly 165 passing through a spring washer 166, a hole 167 drilled in the enlarged circular upper part 168 of the arm 164 and a hole 169 drilled in the middle of the console 160.
In order to adjust the arm 164 to its correct position, a dowel 170 is provided pivotally mounted on the upper part 168 of the arm 164, below the hole 167. A screw 171 passes through a horizontal thread of the dowel 170. and a tab 172 is folded back 90 in the console 160. A collar 173 is fitted between the tab 172 and a shoulder 174 of the screw 171. The extension of the screw 171, located beyond the shoulder 174, is square to provide grip for a key so that the screw 171 can be easily turned. A spring 175 is placed between the tab 172 and the ankle 170 to eliminate the play. By turning the screw, the arm 164 is brought up. to the correct position.
At its lower part the arm 164 carries a contact 176 isolated from the arm by an insulating sleeve 177. The lower part of the arm has the shape of a hook 178, so that its end can be placed exactly on the sheet 157 and that during its run the style 155 can cross the hook without touching it, since the arm 164 is fixed and does not move with the style arm when the latter passes close to it.
Near the upper end of the arm 164 is fixed an insulating bracket 179 in which are mounted a pivot 180 and terminals 181, 182 and 183. Two contact arms 184 and 185 are mounted loose on the pivot 180 and are isolated. of the pivot and each other. At the upper part of these arms are respectively fixed counterweights 186
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
and 187 which tend to rotate these arms towards the arm 164. Attached to the lower part of the arm 184 is a contact 188 which normally is forced to touch the contact 176.
On the other side of the arm 184 is arranged a contact 189 and opposite this contact, on the arm 185, is fixed a contact 190. The contacts 189 and 190 are normally kept apart from each other by a spacer screw 191 secured to a tab 192 of arm 164 and retained by an insulating tab 193 of arm 185. Contact 176 is connected to terminals 182 and 183 by coiled conductors 195 and 196, respectively. The lower part of the arm 184 is extended below the style 155 in 197, so that when the style crosses the hook 178 it pushes the arm 184 in front of it, cutting the contact between 176 and 188, and that continuing its stroke he establishes contact between 189 and 190 and pushes both arm 185 and 184 in front of him.
The position of the contact 190 can be adjusted by means of the screw 191 so that the spacing between the contacts 176 and 190 corresponds to any desired number of revolutions of the cam 100 of the traction pulley 34. When style returns at zero as described above, arms 184 and 185, if they have been styled forward in the manner described above, are returned to the normal position by counterweights 186 and 187.
The height of the hydrostatic column of latex is adjusted, as described above, by raising or lowering the crew 22 under the action of the cable 36 wound on the drum of the device. motor lifting C. The motor lifting device C is mounted on a frame 201 fixed to the post 20 above the shutter clamp device ?. To the lower part of the frame 201 is fixed a reversing motor 202 comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
terminals 203 and 204 for the start and direction winding and terminals 205 and 206 for the motor power winding.
By means of a belt 207 passing over the pulley 208 of the rotor shaft 209 and over a pulley 210 of the gear shaft 211, the motor drives a set of reduction gears (not shown) housed in a gearbox 212 which is mounted on the upper part of the frame 201. The motor 202 transmits the motion, through the gear shaft 211 and the reduction gear train, to the shaft 213 of the cable drum 200. A disc 214 furnished on its face with studs 215 is mounted directly on one of the shafts 216 of the reduction gear train. A cam lever 217 is hinged at 218 to the gearbox 212 so that a cam 219 provided on its underside is lifted by the studs 215 as the disc 214 rotates.
This cam mechanism serves to stop the motor 202 after the latter has traveled a determined interval in the direction of raising or lowering of the crew 22.
The engine stopping mechanism has a mercury switch 220 fitted to a pendulum 221 which is hinged at 222 and which has a spring detent 223 disposed near the free end 224 of lever 217. When the engine 202 is ready to execute a correcting operation, the cam 219 rests on a stud 215 and the cam lever 217 is raised so that its end 224 is above the trigger 223. The pendulum 221 hangs vertically and the mercury switch 220 is in the position. position a of FIG. 8.
As the motor 202 rotates in either direction, the disc 214 carrying the studs 215 rotates slowly, the cam lever 217 lowers, and the free end 224 falls under the spring detent 223 with, optionally, a slight movement of the pendulum,
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
the contact being interrupted in the switch.
As disc 214 rotates the next stud 215 in either direction engages cam 219, cam lifts and end 224 of lever engages spring detent 223 from below. and slowly oscillate the pendulum in position b of FIG. 8, switch 220 still continuing to maintain contact until, at the top of the lever stroke, the trigger has slipped from the end of the lever and the pendulum swings in the opposite direction, as shown. the position g of FIG. 8, by interrupting the contact in the switch 220. The opening of the switch 220 interrupts the engagement circuit of the reversing relay D, as is described below, the motor power circuit. opens and motor 202 stops.
After the pendulum has returned to rest, contact between the electrodes of switch 220 is reestablished and the mechanism is again ready for the next operation.
The degree of correction of the latex column height at each correction operation depends on the number of studs 215 of the disc 214, the transmission ratio of the reduction gear train, and the diameter of the cable drum 200. It can be varied. very easily in the desired way by changing the number of studs. When the cable drum 200 is cylindrical, the degree of correction of the hydrostatic column is a determined amount independent of the column height, and therefore for relatively low column heights corresponding to a small gauge wire, the correction is proportionately smaller than for relatively large column heights corresponding to a larger wire.
The correction can be made proportional to the hydrostatic column when
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
bending a cable drum 200 of conical shape, so that for smaller heights of the crew 22 the conical drum has a smaller diameter and it winds or unwinds a shorter length of cable each time correction operation, and that for greater heights of the crew 22 the conical drum has a larger diameter and that it winds or unwinds a greater length of cable with each correction.
The lowering or raising of the crew 22 by the motor 202 is caused by a three-pole remote control reversing relay D. The motor lowers the crew 22 when the circuit connecting terminal 300 to terminal 301 is closed and he lifts the crew 22 when the circuit connecting terminal 301 to terminal 302 is closed. The circuit connecting between them the terminals 300 and 301, or the terminals 301 and 302, can be closed under the action of the comparator device of the counter B, by the intermediary of the control relay E, as is indicated below. in the description of control relay B and the operation of the control mechanism.
When the circuit connecting terminal 300 to terminal
301 is closed, the magnet coil 303 is energized by the circuit from one of the line conductors L1 to the line conductor L2 through conductor 304, terminal 305, conductor 306, terminal 307, switch 308, conductor 309, coil 303, conductor 310, terminal 300, then through terminal 301, conductor 311, mercury switch 220 and conductor 312. The circuit is closed by switch 313 when the coil 303 is energized, and the switches 314, 315, 316 and 317 are mated with the switch 313, the switches 314, 315 and 317 closing "and the switch 316 opening when the switch 313 closes.
The switches 314 and 315 are interposed
<Desc / Clms Page number 24>
in the motor running direction circuit and the switch 317 is interposed in the motor power circuit. The motor 202 starts in the desired direction to lower the equipment 22 under the action of the circuit going from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor L2 through the conductor 304, the switch 314, conductor 318, terminal 319, conductor 320, terminal 203, motor start and direction winding 202, terminal 204, conductor 321, terminal 322, conductor 323, the switch 315, terminal 341 and conductor 324.
At the same time the power winding is switched on by closing the circuit going from one of the line conductors Li to the other line conductor L2 by the conductor 304, the switch 317, the conductor. 325, terminal 326, conductor 327, terminal 205, motor power winding 202, terminal 206 and conductor 328. Switch 313 keeps magnetizing coil 303 energized even when the circuit is turned on. baked from terminal 300 to terminal 301 only closes momentarily.
Switch 313 keeps the relay energized until the main circuit is interrupted by mercury switch 220 which is interposed in the interlocking circuit from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor. line through conductor 304, terminal 305, conductor 306, switch 308, conductor 309, coil 303, switch 313, conductor 329, terminal 330, conductor 311, sea switch - cure 220 and the driver 312.
When the circuit connecting terminal 301 to terminal 302 is closed, the magnetizing coil is energized by the air baked from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor L2 through conductor 304, the switch 316,
<Desc / Clms Page number 25>
lead 332, coil 331, lead 333, terminal 302, then through terminal 301, lead 311, mercury switch 220, and lead 312. Switch 334 closes when coil 331 is energized , and the switches 335, 336, 308 and 337 are all mated to the switch 334, the switches 335, 336 and 337 closing and the switch 308 opening with the closing of the switch 334. The switches 335 and 336 are interposed in the motor direction circuit and the switch 337 is interposed in the motor power circuit.
The motor 202 starts in the direction corresponding to the lifting of the crew 22 under the action of the circuit going from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor L2 by the conductor 304, the terminal 338, the conductor 339 , switch 335, terminal 322, conductor 321, terminal 204, motor direction winding 202, terminal 203, conductor 320, terminal 319, switch 336, con - duotor 340, terminal 341 and conductor 324.
At the same time the power winding is switched on by closing the circuit going from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor L2 through the conductor 304, the terminal 305, the conductor 306 , terminal 307, switch 337, terminal 326, conductor 327, terminal 205, motor power winding 202, terminal 206, and conductor 328.
Switch 334 keeps magnetizing coil 331 energized even if the circuit connecting terminal 301 to terminal 302 only closes momentarily. Switch 334 keeps the relay on until the main circuit is cut off by mercury switch 220 which is interposed in the interlocking circuit from one of the line conductors L1 to the other line conductor L2 by driver

304, switch 316, lead 332, coil 331, latching contact 334, lead 329, terminal 330, lead 311, mercury switch 220, and lead 312.
Switches 316 and 308 are normally closed and act in the opposite direction for protection against simultaneous energization of coils 303 and 331, switch 316 opening as a result of energization of coil 303. and switch 308 opening as a result of energizing coil 331.
The mercury switch 220 is interposed in the main circuit of the two coils 303 and 331, and the opening of the circuit by the mercury switch following the oscillation of the pendulum 221, as described above, has the effect of shutting down the main circuit, turning off coil 303 or 331, tripping related switches of the motor direction circuit and motor power circuit, and stopping motor 202.
As explained above in the description of devices B and G, the escape pawl 116 oscillates under the action of the alternating pulses of the switch G when the contact 122 of the relay switch 400 is closed.
Instrument B style 155 records all of the switch G pulses produced between the moments of contact of the finger 46 of the apparatus A with the contacts 51 and 52 during the down stroke of the finger. The arc described by the style is thus the measure of the length of yarn produced from a determined weight of latex, or of the time required to produce that length of yarn, this weight corresponding to the weight used while the finger 46 descends from contact 51 to contact 52. The closing and opening of contact 122 are controlled by the meeting of finger 46 with
<Desc / Clms Page number 27>
contacts 51 and 52, via relay 400.
The mercury switch 76 interposed in the line going from the finger to the relay has the effect of making the contact 122 depend on the meeting of the finger 46 with the contact 51 only during the downward stroke of the finger, that is to say. say while the bin 24 is emptying, since the switch is closed only while the bin is emptying, as shown in position a in FIG. 7.
The circuit used to close the relay 400 when the finger 46 touches the contact 51 while the tank 24 is emptying, goes from one of the line conductors L2 to the other line conductor L1 through the conductor 125, the terminal 124, conductor 401, resistor 402, terminal 403, terminal 404, terminal 405, conductor 406, mercury switch 76, conductor 407, finger 46 contact with contact 51, conductor 408, terminal 409 and conductor 410. As the bin fills, the clip-on shutter 60, 61 is open and the mercury switch 76 is open, as shown in position b in FIG. 7; therefore the relay does not react to the meeting of the finger 46 with the contact 51 during the upward movement of the finger.
The relay contact 411 acts as a latching contact to keep the relay closed after the magnetizing coil 404 has energized, because the finger 46 has touched the contact 51. The latching circuit goes from one of the line conductors. L1 to the other line conductor L2 through conductor 410, terminal 409, conductor 412, contact 411, coiled conductor 413, terminal 405, coil 404, terminal 403, resistor 402, conductor 401, terminal 124 and conductor 125.
Relay 400 remains closed until finger 46 touches contact 52, closing the circuit from
<Desc / Clms Page number 28>
terminal 405 of coil 404 to the other terminal 403 of coil 404 through conductor 406, mercury switch 76, conductor 407, finger contact 46 with contact 52, and conductor 414, which runs -circuits coil 404 and opens relay 400 which in turn opens switch 411, which cuts off the engagement circuit.
The opening of relay 400 has the effect of cutting contacts 122 and 411 of the length measuring circuit and of the interlocking circuit. In addition, the opening of relay 400 has the effect of closing for a short time the circuit interconnecting the electrodes of the mercury switch 415 with one direction of operation which makes the corrective circuits of the lifting device active. motor C, which are controlled by the position of switches 176, 188, 189, and 190 of the instrument B comparator mechanism at the end of the totaliser style oscillation 155.
The construction and operation of one-way switch 415 and its arrangement in relay 400 are shown in Figs. 9 to 11. An oscillating frame 416 of the relay 400 is pivotally mounted, at 417, on the arm 418 fixed to the housing of the relay. Attached to the lower part of the frame 416 is a fastening tab 419 which carries the mercury switch 415. The switch comprises a glass container and an insulating base 420 through which the electrodes 421 and 422 connected to the usual lead wires. An insulating barrier 423 is disposed halfway along the container and it comprises at its lower part a passage 424 for a mass of mercury 425 and, at its upper part, a passage 426 for the gases.
Electrode 421 is disposed along the bottom of the vessel and goes to the dam, and the electrode 422 goes to the dam at a fairly high height above the bottom of the vessel and preferably has a short end
<Desc / Clms Page number 29>
descending to electrode 421. Switch tab 419 is connected to relay frame 416 such that when coil 404 is de-energized and the relay is open, switch 415 is open, as shown in the illustration. position a of FIG. 11. Obviously, it is advantageous not to activate the corrective circuit for the motorized lifting device C until the relay 400 changes from the open position to the closed position when the finger 46 touches the handle. contact 52, and this is carried out as shown in FIG. 11.
As shown in position a of FIG. 11, mercury 425 is not in contact with electrodes 421 and 422 when the relay is open until the tank is filling and before finger 46 has touched contact 51. When the relay closes, the switch mercury switches to the ± position and the mercury begins to drip through passage 424, the gas pressure being compensated through passage 426. Mercury only contacts electrode 421 even when it has passed entirely to the bottom of the receptacle, as shown in position c, and therefore the circuit does not close by electrodes 421 and 422 following the closing movement of the relay. When the relay opens, the container rotates to position d and the mercury meets the dam 423, closing the circuit through electrode 421 and the tip of electrode 422.
This closing of the circuit by electrodes 421 and 422 only lasts a short time, as the mercury flows through the switch head and the circuit breaks between the electrodes, as shown in the position. at.
As explained above in the description of the reversing relay D, the motor 202 lowers the crew 22 when the circuit connecting the terminals together

300 and 301 of relay D closes, and it lifts 1 crew 22 when the circuit connecting terminals 301 and 302 to each other closes. One-way switch 415 is interposed in the two circuits from common terminal 301 to terminals 300 and 302, so that the circuit can close from 300 to 301 or from 301 to 302 in order to move the crew 22., when a correction is necessary, except when the relay 400 opens as a result of the contact of the finger 46 with the contact 52, and then only for a short period.
Terminal 182 for instrument B comparator mechanism contacts 188 and 189 is connected to reversal relay D terminal 301 through one-way mercury switch 415 and leads 427 and 428, and the terminals 181 and 183 of contacts 176 and 190 of instrument B are directly connected to terminals 300 and 302 by respective conductors 198 and 199. The circuit going from 300 to 301 or from 301 to 302 of the Relay D can thus be closed only by the comparator device of instrument B and only when the one-way mercury switch 415 is closed.
It can be seen in Figs. 12 and 13 that if the hook point 178 of the fixed arm 164 of the comparator device occupies on the sheet the correct position corresponding to the determined yarn length standard relating to the determined amount of latex employed, the arm 184 is styled a distance sufficient to place contacts 188 and 189 between contacts 176 and 190 without touching either of these, when the actual length of wire produced is equal to the determined standard, and any deviation from the standard leaves contacts 176 and 188 closed when the wire length is shorter than the standard,
<Desc / Clms Page number 31>
contact 189 is caused to touch contact 190 when the length of wire produced is longer than the standard.
You can adjust the permissible deviation of wire length from the standard corresponding to a determined weight of latex, without correcting the column height, by varying the distance between contacts 176 and 190. A simple calculation gives the exact arrangement of control contacts.
Either W = to the weight of latex delivered during the journey between contacts 51 and 52. or w = to the weight of latex per unit length of wire desired.
The total length L which the measured weight W can produce can then be expressed by L = W This L can easily be transferred to a calibrated sheet, by means of the point of the hook 178 of the fixed arm 164.
The rotary mercury switch 49 is set so that the latex shutter 60, 61 opens when the finger 46 is below the contact 52 and before the bottom of the tank 24 touches the lower part of the siphon 27 which and the inlet pipe 28 is filled before the start of the spinning operation. Switch 50 is set so that the latex shutter 60, 61 closes when tip 46 is above contact 51 and before tank 24 overflows.
Contacts 51 and 52 are set so that style 155 wobbles an appropriate distance on sheet 157 as the finger moves between contacts 51 and 52.
Adjust the position of the fixed arm 164 of the comparator mechanism of apparatus B, as described above, so that style 155 moves arm 184 such that contacts 188 and 189 are equidistant from each other. contacts 176 and 190 when the determined yarn length standard corresponding to the determined weight of latex is measured.
<Desc / Clms Page number 32>
The spacing between contacts 176 and 190 is adjusted by means of screw 191, in the manner described above, to ensure the desired allowable length variation for a wire produced from a determined standard, without adding hydrostatic latex column correction.
The apparatus, the parts of which are connected together as shown in FIG. 1 operates as an automatic control when latex is continuously supplied to the nozzles 31 of the latex tank 24 which is fed with latex intermittently through the shutter 60, 61. The height of the latex column above the nozzles is kept constant for any position of the crew 22 by the spring 38.
When the tank 24 has been emptied of the desired quantity for a certain position of the finger 46 below the contact 52, the rotary switch 49 closes and the tank fills up following the opening of the shutter. latex 60,61 produced by closing the circuit L1, 78, 79, 49, 80, 73, 82, 84, 63, 86, 87, L2 of the motor 62 of the shutter. The limit switch 73 cuts the circuit of the motor 62 when the shutter 60,61 has opened to the desired amount.
Opening the latex shutter causes switch 77 on connecting rod 75 to close, disengaging helical gear 133 from helical gear 134 and allowing style 155 to return to zero, under the action of the counterweight 154, following the energization of the coil 142 of the magnet 141, which is in circuit with the closed switch 77, in the circuit L1, 143, 77, 144, 142, 145, L2.
The opening of the latex shutter also causes the opening of the switch 76 of the connecting rod 75, which switches off the relay 400 while the tank is being filled,
<Desc / Clms Page number 33>
so that the relay 400 does not close as a result of the contact of the finger 46 with the contact 51 during the upward oscillation of the finger.
Open contact 122 of relay 400 prevents pulses arriving from switch G from being transmitted to exhaust pawl 116.
When the tank 24 has been filled to the desired amount for a certain position of the finger 46 above the contact 51, the rotary switch 50 closes and the tank begins to empty after the closure of the latex shutter 60 , 61 produced by the closure of the circuit L1, 78, 79, 50, 81, 74, 83, 85, 64, 86, 87, L2 of the shutter motor. Limiter switch 74 cuts off the motor circuit when shutter 60, 61 has closed by a sufficient amount to intercept the flow of latex through inlet pipe 28.
Closing the latex shutter causes the switch 76 of the connecting rod 75 to close, which turns on the finger 46.
The closing of the latex shutter also causes the opening of the switch 77 of the connecting rod 75, which switches off the coil 42 of the magnet 41 thus allowing the helical gear 133 to come into mesh with the helical wheel 134. in the zero position of style 155, by following. the opening of the circuit L1, 143, 77, 144, 142, 145, L2.
When finger 46 touches contact 51 during its downward movement, relay 400 closes via circuit L2, 125, 124, 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 76, 407, 46, 51, 408, 409 , 410, L1.
Contact 411 of the relay acts as a closing contact to keep the relay closed, after finger 46 has passed contact 51, through circuit L1, 410, 409, 412, 411, 413, 405, 404, 403 , 402, 401, 124, 125, L2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 34>
Contact 122 of relay 400 completes circuit L1, 102, 103, 104, 117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, L2, so as to rotate exhaust pawl 116 and totaling the number of revolutions of extraction pulley 34 using style 155.
When closing relay 400, one-way switch 415 keeps the circuit open passing through positions a, b, and c of Fig.ll. and prevents the closing of the circuit via terminals 300 and 301 or 301 and 302 under the action of reversing relay D.
When in the course of its downward movement the finger 46 touches the contact 52, the relay 400 opens as a result of the short-circuiting of the coil 404 of the magnet of the relay by the circuit 405, 406, 76, 407 , 46, 52, 414, 403.
The opening of the latching contact 411 has the effect of opening the relay circuit and the opening of the contact 122 results in the opening of the circuit going from the switch G to the magnets 119 and 128 of the balance d. exhaust 115, which prevents new impulses from being transmitted from switch G to exhaust pawl 116 and causes style 155 to stop. In this rest position, style 155 indicates length. of yarn produced from the determined weight of latex used.
The opening of the relay 400 causes the closing of the one-way switch 415, which lasts for a very short time, as shown in position d in Fig. 11.
The closing of this switch allows the comparator mechanism of the instrument B and the reversing relay D to raise or lower the crew 22 under the action of the motorized lifting device C, if such a correction is necessary.
<Desc / Clms Page number 35>
Since the contact arm 164 has been arranged, as described above, in the correct position required to compare the length of wire produced using a determined standard, there is at the end of the stroke style three possible positions thereof with respect to contacts 176, 188, 189 and 190, after relay 400 has opened and one-way operating switch 415 has closed at the same time as shown in the position d of FIG. 11.
If style 155 has not moved arm 184 from arm 168 of the comparator mechanism and if contacts 176 and 188 continue to touch, indicating that the length of wire produced from the determined weight of latex is less to the standard and therefore the filament is larger than desired, the circuit connecting terminal 300 to terminal 301 of the reversing relay D closes by the circuit going from terminal 300 to terminal 301 through conductor 198, terminal 181, conductor 194, contact 176, contact 188, arm 184, conductor 195, terminal 182, conductor 427, one-way switch 415 and the driver 428.
Because the circuit is thus momentarily completed between terminals 300 and 301, motor 202 starts in the direction in which it lowers equipment 22, as described above.
If the style 155 has moved the arm 184 away from the arm 164 a sufficient distance so that the contact 188 no longer touches the contact 176 but not enough for the contact 189 to touch the contact 190, the length of wire produced from the determined weight latex is within the permissible variation limits with respect to the determined standard and the circuits connecting between them the terminals 300 and 301 on the one hand and the terminals 301 and 302 on the other hand remain open, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 36>
no correction is made to the crew position 22.
If the style 155 has moved arm 184 away from arm 164 a sufficient distance for contact 188 to move away from contact 176 and contact 189 to touch contact 190, thereby indicating that the length of wire produced from the determined weight of latex is greater than the standard and hence the filament is smaller than desired, the circuit from terminal 301 to terminal 302 is closed by the circuit from terminal 301 to terminal 302 by conductor 428, one-way switch 415, conductor 427, terminal 182, conductor 195, arm 184, contact 189, contact 190, arm 185, conductor 196, terminal 183 and conductor 199.
As a result of this momentary closing of the circuit connecting terminal 301 to terminal 302, the motor 202 starts in the direction for which it lifts the crew 22, as described above. The lines drawn on sheet 157 provide a permanent record of the yarn length measurement produced from the determined weight of latex.
When a correction produced by the raising or lowering of the crew 22 is made, the motor 202 stops automatically as a result of the momentary opening of the circuit caused by the mercury switch 220 due to the oscillation. of pendulum 221 after disc 214 has rotated by the angle corresponding to the spacing between two studs 215, also as described above.
When the finger 46 has passed the contact 52 to the position for which the tank fills again with latex, the rotary switch 49 closes and the tank fills as a result of the opening of the latex shutter. 60, 61, because the circuit L1, 78, 79, 49, 80, 73, 82, 84, 63, 86, 87, L2 of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 37>
the shutter closes, the limit switch 73 cutting off the motor circuit when the shutter 60, 61 has opened by the required amount.
