EMI1.1
OSOILLOGRAPHE A RAYON OATHODiaUE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

OATHODIA RADIUS OSOILLOGRAPH.
The invention relates to oscillographs and, in particular, to cathode ray oscillographs in which a cathode ray tube generates on its end wall a luminous trace representing any transient phenomenon applied to the control system of the tube.
The object of the invention is a cathode ray oscillograph apparatus having in one all the necessary amplifiers, the scanning oscillators and all the necessary controls.
The subject of the invention is also an extremely compact, portable cathode ray oscillograph, operating entirely on an alternating network and comprising the rectifiers and filtering devices necessary for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
its operation.
The oscillograph according to the invention can be controlled and synchronized by an external source or on the energy source of the network or on the frequency of the signals applied to control the deviation of the cathode beam along one of the axes of the oscillograph.
The other objects and advantages of the invention will be better understood by reference to the following description as well as to the accompanying drawing, given merely by way of example and which schematically represents a cathode ray oscillograph constructed in accordance with the present invention.
The cathode ray tube 1, on the fluorescent screen of which it is desired to observe a stationary or transient phenomenon, is provided with the usual deflector electrodes 5-5 and 7-7. These deflector electrodes are arranged to produce fields perpendicular to each other, so that the cathode beam 9 passing through the tube between the electron emitting source 11 and the screen, can be deflected in two perpendicular directions. The tube comprises the usual control electrode 13 and several anodes 15 and 17 intended to accelerate the beam and produce electrostatic fields capable of concentrating the beam in a reduced area of the fluorescent screen.
It is understood that it is possible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to substitute for the electrostatic deflector system shown by way of example, any other magnetic or electromagnetic deflector system. Signals to be observed are applied to deflector electrodes 5-5 connected to input terminals 19-19. These signals pass through a switch 21 which sends them to the control electrode of an amplifier tube 23 via a capacitor 25 and an appropriate variable potentiometer 27. The amplified signals appearing in the output circuit of the tube 23 are directed towards the lower movable contact of the switch 21 to be sent, via the coupling capacitor 29, to one of the deflector electrodes 5.
By modifying the position of the contact of the potentiometer 27 it is possible to vary the amplitude of the signal applied to the control electrode of the tube 23 and, consequently, the voltage applied to the electrode 5. This makes it possible to control the sensitivity. and amplifying the instrument and at the same time modifying the amplitude of the image appearing on the screen 3 in accordance with the applied voltage. In the event that it is / is not desired to amplify the signals applied to terminals 19-19, the switch

21 can be moved to the Lower contacts. In this case, the amplifier 23 is disconnected from the deflector electrodes 5-5 and the signals are applied directly to the deflector elements via the capacitor 29.
To allow the control of the speed of movement of the light point, from left to right of the screen or vice versa, a switch 33 makes it possible to connect a source of horizontal control signals to terminals 31-31.
When the contacts of this switch are placed on points 34-34, the signals are connected to the input of the tube 35 through the capacitor 37 and the potentiometer 39. The latter is arranged to control the amplification, The signals applied to the terminals 31-31 are thus amplified in the tube 35, then, after amplification, are sent, via the coupling capacitor 43, to the horizontal deflection electrodes 7-7 so as to deflect the beam in a horizontal plane.
When switch 33 is moved down, to contacts 44-44, signals applied to terminals 31-31 are sent directly through the lower blade of the switch and coupling capacitor 43, to the deflector electrodes 7-7. In the case where it is desired to use an oscillator to control the time axis in a horizontal direction, an oscillator tube 45, preferably gas-filled, provided with a control electrode is provided. The output circuit of this tube has a number of capacitors 46, 47, 48 and 49. These capacitors are charged by a suitable voltage source through resistors 50, 51 and 32.
A switching device comprising a pair of switches 53, 54, makes it possible to determine the periodic firing rate of the tube 45 according to the particular capacitor which it connects in the output circuit of the tube.
Provision has been made for an oscillator capable of developing a sawtooth wave of desired characteristic, the charge and discharge periodicity being adjustable over a very wide range of frequencies. In accordance with the particular arrangement described by way of example, this variation in frequencies is assumed to extend between 20 and 15,000 periods / second. For this, the switches 53, 54 are interconnected so that the movable contact of the switch 53 allows one of the capacitors 46 to 49 to be connected to the crimping circuit of the tube 45 and that the switch 54 performs in the circuit. tube output 45 different combinations of resistance and capacitance,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In accordance with.
The invention preferably uses an RCA 885 oscillator tube, although other types of tubes having roughly the same characteristics may be substituted. So that the discharge of the capacitors 46 to 49 in the tube 45 does not depend only on the starting voltage of the tube and so that this frequency can be made dependent either on the AC supply voltage, or on the voltage applied to the tubes. terminals 19-19, either from an external synchronization voltage, one can conneo-. ter an appropriate control voltage at the grid of the oscillator tube via a transformer 57 so as to cause the discharge at the desired rate.
According to the invention, these signals are applied by means of a switch device 59 consisting of three separate movable contacts 60, 61 and 62 acting simultaneously. Each of the movable contacts 60, 61 and 62 gives contact with a set of fixed contacts 64, 65, 66; 67, 68.69; and 70,71,72.
When the contacts 61,62 touch the first group of contacts 64,65,66, the tube 45 can be synchronized with the voltage applied to the terminals 19-19. The central contacts 67,68,69 are used to synchronize the tube 45 on the frequency of the power supply network and the lower contacts 70,71,72 are used to synchronize the tube 45 on any independent external synchronization signal that can be applied to terminals 73. This latter signal can consist of a pulse of large amplitude and of short duration so as to instantaneously start the tube 45. When desired, the external synchronization signal can present a very different effect. any shape, eg, the unsymmetrical vole tooth, the symmetrical sawtooth, or any other desirable waveform.
Suppose the switch 61,62 is placed on the upper contacts 64,65 and 66 of the switch, and therefore the tube 45 is controlled by the output voltage of the amplifier tube 25, that is, by the voltage applied to terminals 19-19. In this way, part of the voltage supplied by tube 23 is sent to point 64, through resistor 75, impedance 77 and conductor 79.
These signals are thus applied to the grid of the tube 45 and determine the times when the capacitors 46,49 discharge in the tube *
The various system voltages are supplied as follows: 1 The network is connected to terminals 81-81. The voltage transformed by the transformer 83 is applied to a rectifier rectifying the two half-waves 85, This latter can be, for example, constituted by a tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
RCA-80, and the output voltage of this tube, after being softened by a suitable filter 86 comprising inductors and capacitors, appears at the terminals of the voltage divider 87.
Between the terminal terminals of this divider 87 are taken the different supply voltages of the tubes. The heating current of the different heating elements of the tubes 45 are supplied by a separate secondary winding 89 of the transformer. A second additional winding 91 supplies the heating current for the tubes 23 and 35 and a third winding 93 supplies the heating current to the cathode ray tube 1. The supply voltage to the cathode ray tube is supplied by a rectifier tube. separate 95 in combination with the filter capacitors 97, The voltage thus obtained is applied to a voltage divider 99.
If it is desired to control the operation of the oscillator 45 in accordance with the frequency of the energy applied to the terminals 81, the movable contacts 60,61 and 62 are placed on the central contacts 67,68 and 69 so that part of the The heating current of the tube 45 is applied through the intermediary of the conductors 100 and 101, to control the frequency of the oscillating tube 45. The operation of the tube 45 is analogous to that which was explained previously when it was subjected to the control. of signals applied to terminal terminals 19-19.
If it is desired to control the operation of the tube 45 by means of a separate external signal serving for synchronization, the movable contacts 60, 61 and 62 are placed on the lower contacts 70, 71 and 72 so that the signals applied to the terminals 73 appear on the control grid of tube 45. It can be seen that when oscillator tube 45 is connected through conductor 103 and resistor 104 to the upper contact of switch 33, a signal can be sent via capacitor 37 and potentiometer 39 to control tube 35.
In this way, the latter can operate under the control of the signal applied to the terminals 31. or under the control of the oscillator tube 45 depending on the position of the movable contacts 33 on the contacts 34 or 105, Therefore, it is possible to control? the voltages applied to the control electrodes 7-7 of tube 1.
As stated above, the voltage divider 87, which comprises different resistance sections 106, 107, 108 and 109, is arranged to provide all the DC voltages for the tubes 45, 23 and 35. The rectifier . separate sor 95 discharging under divider 99, provides all the conti @ voltages
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
- supply supply for the cathode ray tube 1.
For example, the conductor 109 joining the control grid 13 of the tube 1 to the tap of the section 110 of the voltage divider 99, makes it possible to control the polarization of this grid and, consequently, the light intensity of the point d. impact of the beam on the screen 3. Likewise, the conductor 111 is used to control the voltage of the first anode of the tube. The potentiometers 113 and 114 respectively connected to the lower end of the voltage divider 99, make it possible to apply to the deflector systems 5-5 and 7-7, the appropriate polarization voltages necessary for the centrame of the point of impact of the cathode ray 9 and, therefore, the resulting image on screen 3.
It will be understood that all the switches and adjustable control elements such as resistors, capacitors, potentiometers, etc., can be fitted on the front panel of the box containing the oscillograph, so that they can be operated with ease. The cathode ray tube 1 is arranged in the boot so that its screen is visible on the front face of the apparatus.
